I test drove a 2020 Colorado zr2 diesel. Then I test drove a 2019 Ford Ranger FX4. I'm coming from a 2017 Honda Ridgeline black edition. I'm a person that likes innovation and new advancement. And be honest all three trucks are great to me. Every couple of years I trade for something different or updated. No truck is perfect to me, every truck has something I think they need to change. But, after driving the Ford Ranger I thought it was better for me then the Colorado. But you can't go wrong with any of these new midsize trucks. I'm glad there is a lot a competition, which keeps it competitive.

I watched your review and drove both (Ranger Lariat & Colorado v6 z71) in late September, while I like the look of both trucks, I FAR preferred the ride and suspension with the Colorado/Canyon's that I drove and it wasn't even close. The GM Trucks rode like comfortable SUV's and the Ranger was stiff and really seemed to throw you around and feel every bump on the road.
When it came time to buy at the time of the model year closeout, I had narrowed it down to a 30k z71 Colorado and a 34k Canyon SLT, while I slightly preferred the GMC stylings, I went ahead with the Colorado (same truck guts) and used the extra cash to buy the accessories I wanted (bed rug/tonneau/level kit/LED lighting/zr2 Rock slider running boards) and still come out ahead.

The Colorado is nice but I love the ranger. But knowing an all new ranger is only a couple years awaywould make me wait especially cause it will have the same frame as the new Bronco. Also, looking forward to Ford introducing a new small truck. It would be interesting if we got something similar to small trucks in Europe with 4 doors and short beds.

I really wanted to be jealous with the new Rangers but after learning they don't offer 6 foot beds with the crew cabs, I'm very happy with my 2017 GMC Canyon SLT with a 6 foot bed. I held out as long as I could for the new Ranger but had to get into a new truck sooner and overall I have enjoyed the GMC Canyon. The Colorado is nice but the front end reminded me to much of the Chevy Trailblazer. Also I did look and drive the Toyota Tacomas but honestly the comfort and features offered in the Canyon far exceeded the Tacoma especially with getting more for the price as well.

I had a Ford dealer tell me that he stood behind Ford reliability except for the mustang. He said that they got complaints all the time on the mustang. A few years later I see they put in the mustang engine in the ranger. Hmm!
They should have put in the 2.7 EcoBoost from the Ford f150. It would destroy the competition in every category. The torgue, speed, and gas mileage would have been awesome. All that power and torque in a much lighter truck.

After a few 355 Colorado’s, bought first new in 04. Only vehicle in the air controlled garage 15 years later! New cars and classics don’t get that respect. 06 has 398k, beat as the dedicated work brute. Tacoma’s only true rival and the 1grfe notorious reliability issues and mpg didn’t help. On trails, snow and mud they are very compliant. Am I biased? Own one for 15 years! The only vehicle hands down I will travel cross country

Ported, intake, exhaust and tune. 7.3k rpm junkyard $350 engine. All factory long blocks. Why did I buy an engine? Cause at 136k sold the original one which payed for the whole truck. Old Vortec 3.5 5 cylinders all aluminum construction.

We test drove the Ranger, the Colorado, a diesel Colorado ZR2, and then the dealer brought out an All Terrain Canyon from another location.
The Ranger: It was weird. It was a pretty truck, and a bit more comfortable seating. It did feel more like a Ford in the cockpit. The little 4 cylinder Ecoboost with that transmission is notchy. You can feel all ten gears. It feels like a stutter. I don’t know how they did it but Ford managed to replicate the driving experience of a ’72 Lincoln Continental. It sways to and fro. When you steer, the truck kind of catches up sometime. It’s like a vehicle without sway bars or shock absorbers. It’s like the tires are ten pounds low on air. Here’s the funny part, when you stomp on the gas, you get this killer V-8 sound… FROM THE SPEAKERS! Yup, they put fake engine noise in the cab to make you feel better. Where they screwed up on the Ranger is they could have made a nice suspension from the Raptor guys and slapped that V-6 ecoboost in it. Oh man, that would be a hotrod! (one I’d want)
The Canyon All Terrain is tight, yet comfortable. The seats are a bit firmer than the Ranger. The interior of the Canyon is nicer for sure. The Colorado is a bit Fisher Pricey. The engine feels SNAPPY, heck it has 308 horsepower. All around, the Canyon feels so much nicer to drive. So, we bought one. Ours is the All Terrain model with larger tires and improved shock absorbers. The sway bars are twice as thick as the one on an F-150, perhaps that explains it’s great handling.
The Canyon All Terrain is better all around than the flawed Ranger. We bought one. Being a huge Ford fan, it took a lot to sway me.

I bought a 2020 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Long Bed. I absolutely love the v6, so much power and I’m still averaging 25mpg. The 8spd trans is so smooth. I am 6’2 and have more than enough leg/head room. Unlike the Tacoma..
What I don’t like about the ranger is the roundish shape, I don’t like the bed, I do not like the price (lol) and I don’t like that you can only have a turbo 4cyl. Why? Turbo engines don’t last. That’s the truth.

Got my 18 Colorado in a Z71 trim and no complaints. I have been really curious if I’d regret going with the Colorado before the Ranger came out. I think both are sharp trucks. Not a fan of the diesel though, prefer my standard gas, but to each their own. I doubt anyone would have much to gripe about with either truck. My only true issue with the XLT is that it doesn’t come with projector headlights, I simply refuse to buy any vehicle without this very simple update into modern lighting. By the same right, only the ZR2 and Z71 trims get projectors with Chevy. Only big factor I see playing a role in what truck someone ends up with is the cost. Got my 18 Z71 for sub 30 out the door used with 13k miles, where as just the XLT trim as mentioned in this review is 34k. With rangers being so new, I doubt such steals will exist for a year or two on the used ones.

Also comparing a Diesel to a Gasser. Both the 4 and 6 gas engines in the Colorado aren't turbo'd and hold very respectable Torque and HP curves. Compare the Gas 4 or 6 Colorado to the Ranger instead of a Diesel. I will say, nice that Ford's getting into this game, should be some decent competition compared to the imports.....and don't get me started on the unibody Honda with the minivan front end (city truck only, love to see what happens with serious off-roading to that thing).

I own a Chevy Colorado, so I can speak from personal experience. I had driven every truck in this class in 2018 before I made my decision, so maybe this comment will help you. The Nissan frontier is the biggest bang for your buck, but it’s ugly and outdated. The Honda Ridgeline is not a truck, it’s an accord that looks like a truck. The Tacoma is an incredible vehicle, on-road and off; a serious beast of a midsize truck, but it’s overpriced. The Chevrolet Colorado hands down in my opinion was the best option for me, comfort wasn’t exactly top notch but I needed a work vehicle for light towing and daily truck stuffs. There was way more options for the Colorado than any other midsize truck at the time (I4, V6, and I4 turbo diesel) (WT, LT, Z71, ZR2) that none of the other manufactures could compete, at least for my taste and needs. I’m no ford guy so I may be biased but new ford seems like a good truck, I just don’t like the front end and depending on the turbo, they usually don’t last very long. Ford’s dependability has always kept me away from them, so putting not one but two turbos just to beat other car companies in a numbers game? Not for me personally. But maybe it might be for you, do your research and make the right choice for you.

I drove a new Ranger. I felt like my Ranger from the 80s was a far better buy at under 20 grand. It could do anything this one will. You can keep your lane sensors, adaptive cruise that becomes an annoyance until you turn it off and all of the other junk that we don't need nor want.

Both of these trucks remind me of work/company trucks. I think give the ranger another couple years and it'll fix the zonks like a better exhaust outlet, better door panel, and maybe a slighter nicer bed. I personally like the Ranger better anyway , being that it's more flexible. I remember I used to work with a guy who had a Colorado and our steel toes never used to fit in the footsteps in the back. Ur not even comparing gas to gas engine’s. I own 2 Colorado ‘s. A 2015 & 2017. The 15 has about 140k miles on it. Never a problem with either truck. The 17 has about 30k miles. Purchased the 17, LT 4x4 Crew cab for $34. And change. Both trucks have 3.6ltr gas and will get up and go. Get 24 mpg all the time, and seat comfort is great on both. (Both seats are cloth though). These Colorado’s were MT’s truck of the year 2 years in a row. Not to mention have been compared to the ford and Toyota in many comparisons. The Chevy always comes in first, the Ford was dead last in 2 of those comparo’s. Look at motor trends comparison’s to verify my truth. Iam not knocking the ranger, he’s put a 2yr old diesel and compared it with the brand new ford. Put a 19 Colorado gas 2wd Crew cab next to it. That would be fair. Iam a 55 yr old man, owned many trucks. The Colorado is by far the best for me and what I do., not to mention it fits in my garage really well!

At 1200 miles, the transmission would shudder very annoyingly at 1200 rpms the dealership told me its normal...at 4000 miles it got progressively worse...again the dealership said it’s normal. I drove 2 different new similar trucks on their lot and they did not shudder.
At 10,000 miles, the driver information display went out as well as the computer. The transmission. Was well beyond normal and the dealership finally decided it wasn’t right....it’s been 3 weeks and I’m still driving a loaner v-6 Colorado......

I really like the look of both trucks and thought both had comfortable seats with fairly good rear seat room. The interior layout of the Ranger is cleaner to me but I think the Chevy infotainment system is nicer. The real difference was driving both trucks. Although the Ranger had great acceleration, I felt every bump in the road and felt the ride was very bouncy. It also had a much duller steering feel. The Colorado also had very good acceleration with the V6 and it was almost carlike in its ride and handling. If I never took either truck out on the road I likely would favor the Ranger, but after the test drive I am definitely going with the Colorado (or Canyon).
