I wouldn’t say this is even just the dark side of idol culture in Japan, because so many of these comments are in English, and Japanese usually can’t write this well, It’s a bunch of foreigners with Japanese usernames, combined with actual Japanese people crying (who most likely complain in Japanese)

The guy who is rumoured to be her boyfriend is a guy named mafumafu, hes a Japanese singer, not really an internet personality like Rushia is but both still part of that idol culture thing. Apparently his female fans are also losing their marbles over this. Idol culture can be such a toxic thing
Am i surprised? No.
mafumafu? heard of him before, never knew he was a guy lol
The vtuber community is very supportive and wholesome, and most of the fans are supportive because they are passionate about vtubers and respect their voice acting abilities and such. However, there are definitely those who show support simply because they want to strengthen that parasocial bond and make themselves feel closer to these creators. Sadly that minority is very loud, but hopefully it blows over. Also, the engagement ring is just a very good looking piece of merch, I'm sure most people bought it simply because it looks good. It's the kind of fans you talked about in this video that would buy it for their "romantic fantasy" reasons. Supporters and Simps are two entirely different things.
This. Ever since vtubers got really popular in the west back in 2020, the community hasn't been as wholesome and so many people are bringing toxicity to it and giving the vtuber community a bad name

I'm astonished this reached out into your bubble Optimus lol This is kind of like the typical e-girl reaction except with Japanese Idols, the rabid fans are willing to stalk and commit some heinous crimes because they get that upset. Its irritating to see these kinds of people still exist.
I've been following the V-Tuber community for a while now and the one thing you have to remember with all these "personalities" is that there is still a person behind the avatar. A person with actual feelings and a life outside of the character. It's the same with the J-pop idol world, they're also playing characters for their audience and, much like here, once the illusion breaks, things can get rather dark.

It's very clear that these husks do not care for their idol if they freak out about finding out that, yes, she has a relationship. I love Rushia, but this is just sad. I'm glad that she has a relationship going, shows me she's growing as a person.
I'm glad for that person tho, the fans of hers are so out of touch with reality if they freaked out when she's in the relationship. That's being very obsessed with her.
They are supposed to like the character, not the voice actor who's supposed to be hidden. It shows the insanity people would strive for.
I only really watch clips of Hololive but I like Rushia as well. I'm glad she has the time to have a boyfriend and I hope they're happy. Incels will be incels. They're practically not even human anymore with how much they lower themselves in the world. No need to be worried by what they cry about
@@-R.E.D.A.C.T.E.D- that's the part that's super weird to me too. im one of the viewers of this who likes a few vtubers, but the thing is that they're meant to be characters (yes, theres real people behind them, but most have made up lore, voices, appearances, personalities, etc). why would one choose one random subscriber out of millions, and do they expect them to look and act and sound just like the anime girl avatar when theyve fallen in love with whats basically meant to be a persona?
If these people just got off social media and put this much emotion into doing something better with their lives, there would probably be more individuals like Rushia who would legitimately be interested in them.
It's easy to say instead of doing, buddy.
I was never a simp/incel like them but was a lonely basement dweller although I never wasted my money, it took me 5 years full of failures and giving up halfway to become a successful engineer, completed my masters, got a loving SO.

fans who cannot accept content creators(e.g. vtubers) such as Rushia to have a real relationship, most likely disregards the fact that behind this fantasy character, is a real, tangible human being. some fans of vtubers have a dead set fantasy/reality for themselves and their vtuber, some fans use their content to escape reality. but a quick escape from reality is all it is. a fantasy is a fantasy. attacking a content creator online for this is quite petty in my opinion, you knew what you were getting into when you first subscribed or started a monthly subscription.

Rushia is a good cutting board and we can't lose her!
Yeah... Drama is more overblown for Japanese (or just Asian in general) Idols being in relationships compared to the average E-girl.
Egirls are treated like the p-stars you want to look up to. Like, if a twitch streamer got into onlyfans, not that many people would be in outrage, or care that much.
Idols are treated as the angels of the entertainment industry. Being in a relationship alone could either ignore, or destroy an Idol's image. Like, if a pop star in 2010 was spotted dating, the celebrity, as well as the other person, would be in heat.
A large portion of her community (I would know, I'm in it) reacted somewhat like this to the *BREAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS!* :
"Oh, she's dating someone? Cool. Good for her. (Proceeds to watch her 'death scream' over getting ejected in Among Us)"

For those who don't know: In Japan there is this whole idol culture phenomenon. As an idol you always have to be there for your fans, you are always available and you never have a relationship because you are in a wierd parasocial relationship with all of your fans. The vtubers at hololive are idols in this sense and therefore these rules apply to them too.
It's pretty much a cultural thing over there and careers have ended over night because someone had a boyfriend/girlfriend.
This is also a phenomenon that recently happened in the english branch of hololive because one of them has a friendly relationship with another male streamer.
(Note: this is a very oversimplified version the whole stuff so double check if you are interested because it becomes very complex)

From what I know this kind of things didn't really happens very often, but just a couple weeks ago (I think), there's the Mori Calliope drama (also from Hololive), where another youtuber, Connor (CDawgVA) was said to "cuck" her fans. Don't really know much about that one because I don't want to lose brain cells.
@@madcaptain5525 yeah this has been weird, I mean can you really even cuck someone you’ve never seen or even heard the voice of?
@@madcaptain5525 the situation with Mori was pathetic, people really need to mind their own business and get a grip on reality. it's downright sad.
honestly, this type of stuff wouldn’t happen if we don’t value celebrities as much as we should, and that 90% of women are only willing to talk to 10% of the men in the world. society pretty much caused this.
Yup. It's a deep-rooted problem that doesn't have a simple solution.

This is the exact reason why companies who manage Idol groups and Idols/talent forbid talent from having public relationships, because people are crazy. Its to protect the talent but it makes their life harder. People stop being creeps.
I'd never imagine people would be this down atrocious for a girl who's represented by pixels on a screen.
That's crazy, you mean to tell me the human being that can think and breathe has a life.
Hololive is the company that manages her, basically. They manage a lot of vtubers, and they are all encouraged to behave at least to some degree like how Rushia treats her viewers. It is their bread and butter. GFE = Girlfriend Experience. That is the main selling point for a lot of Hololive-affiliated vtubers. Not saying it is right, I'm just saying that this storm could be seen coming from miles away due to these circumstances.
To be fair, ~95% of this situation is contained in Japanese circles and a lot of tweets, messages, etc. are actually fan translated ones, so I don't really see the point in anyone outside of it talking about it. They don't care about what we say, and are not going to change anytime soon. This is the culture they built, so it is the culture they will swim in until they decide they want change. Personally, I don't foresee any change on the horizon. "You Will Never Be Japanese", as they say, and they don't want you to be.
In my opinion, Rushia and other Hololive members are not innocent either, since they knowingly and willingly take advantage of these people by selling them the illusion of a virtual girlfriend. Anyone being taking advantage of does not sit well with me, and that includes even the saddest of individuals such as this. It is funny to laugh at them, but it also feels good to see the people who are using them to get a taste of it as well, so to speak.
I honestly think Rushia and the others are innocent. Even if they act like they are a virtual gf, it’s the fan base’s fault for believing it.
@@kemritwithgunbutrebornasle4021 she's also trying to sell that product of a gf though, she's not 100% innocent. someone said she's selling engagement ring merch? you can't be surprised when you have fans like this.
@@leonthomas2020 Oh, I didn’t know that, ignore me then, I’m irrelevant.
I would say this is the best comment about this issue. I want to know things that are behind the scenes and that are not usually seen. I rarely watch VTubers since it is not my cup of tea, but once in a while, I watch it. Somehow, just seeing the merch from Hololive VTubers makes me think that this one of the sources of income, and this attracts any individuals ranging from affluent guy, casuals, and supporters to loners, simps, and those who have problems. For some, they hope they find the girl of their dreams. There are some individuals that could be exploited and go in a spending spree with the fall hope of getting close to Rushia. Speaking of Rushia, her avatar is so gorgeous that it could cause a certain number of guys would fall for her. Let's add the merchandize too, and it is quite manipulative since it makes vulnerable individuals pay more money to hope that they get what they want. Seriously, her Birthday Celebration merchandize is as expensive as a RC car and IMO, I would rather by a RC car since I can play it anytime and I bought it with my own volition. I wonder if purchasing that set may make people accomplish something. Unfortunately, there are those that will go over the impossible dream of becoming the girlfriend of Rushia, but it's not going to happen. I am aware that the society is very savage towards to the unfortunate ones who have an obsession for Rushia and those who have mental health problems. IMO, the selling of a virtual girlfriend is scummy to a point that certain individuals make impulsive decisions to chase something that is unreachable. This can induce permanent damage on some individuals. Maybe the root cause of the obsession to female avatar VTubers may have to do with something that individuals that want to fulfill their pipe dream of having a loved one which is conditioned in any form of media, or business practices to earn bank and that may include exploit the vulnerable ones. This might be a discussion worth exploring. I need to learn more about the Rushia story when I find time, more on the behind the scenes stuff and the economics on how the Hololive operates. I have this question for while whether if it is possible to have Hololive VTubers to use female avatars and the individual is a guy in a real life, or that stuff never happens. Sometimes, mysteries of the VTubers make people want to know the real individual, and thus they dive into the vivid unknown.
Lessons in life: *never simp for anyone*
"we had something special".
"I don't even know who you are."
I hope no one attacks Mafumafu he’s so sweet and just a great artist
Edit- Also Mafumafu is the supposed Boyfriend I Believe. People think Mafu and Rushia are together
Anyone just chillin
Anyone just irrelevant
Anyone don't have life
I don't think anyone was ready for this
The amount of obsession these people have is insane. Look I like VTubers too but I wouldn't go that far because it's just madness.
The fact that this whole thing even became a "situation" is really sad. People need to understand that the most important rule to keep in mind if you're going to dedicate yourself to a streamer is that these people will have lives outside of their job. Streaming is like any job, and any human on earth with a job will tell you that of course they have lives outside of their jobs. It doesn't matter how "immersive" the relationship aspect becomes (eg: Rushia selling those rings), fans still need to understand that, at the end of the day, Rushia is a streamer, and a streamer who works for a business. Fans need to understand the importance of clearly separating fiction from reality, because otherwise a situation can get real out of hand, just like this.
When you think beeing a weeb is one of the lowest things and then there suddenly these guys pop up and even we weebs can laugh at them
To make things worse for her is that there are plenty of people who make their personality hating vtubers severely amplifying the drama to try and make her "graduate" which is either quitting or dropping your established identity to stream under a new name(theres one case of latter that i know of) or at the very least make her feel even more hurt and stressed out
This is a major "Oh no! Anyway." Moment
imagine being cancelled over something like this
Thank you for playing Apex in the background
You have a girlfriend? I thought I had a chance with you Optimus 😢
The thing is that rushia preyed/pandered and railing in the mentally ill by doing Alot of *GFE* girlfriend experience content. Which creates an unhealthy parasocial relationships. It's no surprise this kind of situation happy. I mean there's merch of rushia wedding ring and couples mug.
The reason why the rest like fubuki referred to her fans as friends inorder to shut down the girlfriend experience content inorder to not form this exact kind a parasocial relationships.
Thats how the fanbase are Okey If they are dating someone outside larping as an anime character because they don't do girlfriend experience to an extreme like rushia.
I kinda gotta agree with that one tweet though that says she asked for this. Idk her community at all, but if an engagement ring is part of your merch than you're clearly directly targeting parasocial relationships for financial gain. Whether or not it's immoral is a different issue but if you're gonna specifically try to cultivate parasocial relationships don't be surprised when they implode over things like this.
Well at least it was done full bars, engagement ring or not i think same consequences
This truly is a certified Bruh Moment
These are terminally online people, we should force schools to take trips into nature to teach people to some times go outside and have a walk
I really like Rushia, but it should be obvious to anyone that behind the cute Live2D model there's a human being free to live her life and form her own relationships. And whatever she decides to do with her personal life is not of our concern.
Worst part of this is that she *"apparently"* has a boyfriend, it's not entirely confirmed (to my knowledge at least). Given the possibilty that this is just a big misunderstanding, all those simps would've made a huge fuss over nothing.
