I think your kind of on the right line of thinking here. While I was growing up my family would tease me mercilessly if I showed any interest in a girl, to the point of humiliation. As a result I went into adulthood feeling shame for wanting to talk to women. I had to just let go of the concept of shame or dignity to get past that enough to meet someone. Never was fully able to ditch it though, but I went from not being able to talk to women to very awkwardly being able to.
