Eric Cantona Before Manchester United
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 10. 03. 2019
- Initial success at Leeds United was followed by a Manchester United career in which Eric Cantona achieved permanent legend status. But why, when he first came to England, was it to play on trial for Sheffield Wednesday? Why was his initial acquisition by Leeds perceived to be a high-risk move?

'He went up to each of the three members of the disciplinary board and told them they were an idiot' - beautiful
Cantona is a proper bad boy. Though he is foul-mouthed, aggressive and violent, he never seemed (to me atleast) like a malicious or generally bad person.
As a Liverpool fan, it kills me to see the list of people we passed on signing:
Ronaldo, Michael Laudrup, Cantona, Dani Alves.
Glad that we signed up Salah and Van dijk when we got a chance.
Anyway, there are a few players from our bitter rivals I always respect and admire: Catona, Sir Charlton, Ryan giggs, Rio ferdinand etc.
Especially Cantona and Giggs in the 90s were tearing teams apart. They used to link up so well, and with Beckham on the right wing swinging in the perfect crosses. The United team in the 90s was a class apart. Props to Sir Alex for trusting his youth and giving raw talents like Cantona a chance when no one didn't.
As a Chelsea fan, it kills me to see the list of people we sold. No list required. Also, we passed on signing Mbappe at 13.
cant beat derk kuyt tho bahaha
Liverpool didn't pass on Laudrup. They had agreed on a 3 year deal. But Liverpool decided at the last moment it was 4 year or nothing.
@@keanqyn1994 Um... That sounds exactly like passing on him to me...
@@chrislogue2276 How does "make it 4 years or we're not signing you" sound similar to "Nah, we don't want him anymore/he's not good enough"?..............
I'm an Arsenal fan, but he is truely a mythical figure. The way he came back in the 95/96 season and just dominated, the arrogance, the fight, the flair, the artistry and the philosopher.
He went to Utd and owned the place. I'd love to sit with him and talk football, the arts and politics.
He truely was one of a kind......
"When Seagulls follow zeee trawler, it's is because they s'ink sardines will be thrown into the sea...S'ank you."
If a black footballer has acted the way Cantona had behaved for any top club, he would have been sent to solitary confinement.
Possibly depends where in the world they were and who they were. Look at Romario, Ronaldinho, Garrincha and Asprilla to name a few, played for fun and didn't give two fucks.
@Cherryboy I think if it was a non English black footballer then they'd maybe be given the rub of the green. If it was a black Englishman...Then maybe you're right.
It would also be down to talent and their capacity to deliver on the big stage.
Cherry Boy True but that doesnât mean Cantona wasnât a boss for doing itđ
@@fbaallied The Colombian that was shot dead for scoring an own goal at World Cup USA 94 wasn't black. Would they have tortured him first if he was black and then killed him? What in God's name has his colour got to do with his punishment? Yes he would have suffered added racial abuse, but the punishment would have been the same. Even back then the law was the same for a black premier league footballer as it was for white players. Rio Ferdinand is not really black or white. Does that mean his ban would have been halved if he was totally white and doubled if he was totally black? I hate how people have to bring in race into things. Who cares what colour his skin is? Evra never got a worse punishment because he was black for kicking that dude. Saurez never got an undercooked punishment for being racist just because he was a white man doing it. Racism is racism whatever colour you are and whoever you point it at. If you need to bring race into it then that becomes suspicious to me!!!!
@ShaneJoshua1980 Great comment man. I feel like that about some of your players. I came to despise Arsenal due to our rivalry, but god did you have some players!!! Henry, Bergkamp, Viera, Petit, Overmars, Parlour (yes I said it ha ha), Pires, Wright, Merson, Annelka, Kanu...the list goes on. I love to see mutual repsect of another club's players. Like Henry changed the Premier League after Cantona changed it. Henry was just unreal and looked like it took no effort...plus that goal against us over Barthez...Bastard ha ha.
there should a TV Show starring Zlatan and Cantona...
V-Factor doing what? Besides talking cringeworthy bullshit đ
Brilliant!!!!
@@RED-yw7ov no, that's you
Definitely
Zlaten is nothing but a fraud with a pony tail! Cantona is real deal
Do a video about Getafe. The have the worst pass accuracy and lowest possesion percentage but they are 4th in La Liga
their defensive system helps a lot I think they're third to atletico and valencia (all these 3 teams play a compact 4-4-2)
Leicester City won the premier league with the lowest possession and they won the league. Dont know about pass accuracy. Possession doesnt mean anything if you cant do anything with it.
â@@carpetbilly Leicester had low possession but it was by no means the lowest in the league.
Not watched any Getafe games but I assume the low possession and pass accuracy means they're playing a route one style. Like others have mentioned, Leicester won the league playing a similar way, an if that is how Getafe have had success then it's probably good for Spanish football in general, to have more varied styles of play throughout the league.
They have uruguayan defenders. That's why
I think he came 3rd in the Ballon D'or in 1993 just behind Baggio and Bergkamp..that shows just how good of a footballer he was.
It's funny comparing Bergkamp and Cantona. I mean people say Bergkamp is more talented and it might be true but no way could Bergkamp have inspired a team the way Cantona did. Bergkamp would often disappear. Cantona had the grace, skill and touch like Bergkamp but he was also a winner.
Just goes to show what sir Alex knew what we didnât! What a wise man he is
Ah nothing about why he left Leeds after being part of the league winning team
these vids used to be cool but now I think they skim over info and come to abrupt ends
...... But, everyone knows what happened when he went to Man United. Literally, everyone.
@@conky83 thats...not what he said
Mike Craddock ,""" very true big part of his English football legacy started at EL coz SWFC made massive blunder.
Great team especially that 92-93 season" was there when we beat you at Ibrox 2-1 n same score at yours"" ps tapie didn't just mess with cantona he also bribed us RANGERS out of first ever champions League final but even with him bribing the other teams in the group we still went unbeaten all the way thru every UCL game and missed the final by one goal
Rumours are he left Leeds not because Fergie persuaded Wilkinson to sell, but cos he was banging another team mates wife!
There are no players like Cantona anymore - nowadays we have players who are more like products who present themselves, market themselves and speak for themselves almost interchangeably with stars from other global sports. Someone as familiar with Camus as Cantona was would hold these insects in nothing but contempt. There'll be more skilled players, the media will manufacture bigger legends, more GOATS, but I doubt we'll ever see a player with balls the size of Cantona's again
Once a lifetime player but a typical Frenchman đ . I dated a Parisian girl , she was insane đ€Ł
He was a crucial part of the rise and dominance of Manchester United which they had for 20 years. What a player.
Remember seeing clips of him playing in french football. Some great goals interspersed with him booting someone!!
OOH AH CANTONA! I SAID OOH AH CANTONA!
Cantona after football has been just as interesting.
Your videos have a wonderful relaxing quality to them.
Looking back it's funny how people questioned Fergie choices there's a video titled the day Cantana signed for United where United fans really doubt the decision and one says, "forget all that ooh ahh Cantana, we won't be singing that here at old Trafford" if only he knew.
*OOH*
*AAH*
*CANTONA*
*OOH AAH CANTONA!*
Can you please make a tactical profile video on Kaka during his days at Milan.
I second this
Great vid. Shared on FB
Love the way how Matt G writing in These Football Times described "Attacking Pivot" referencing a time before such things existed and before such university student words were used in football.
Ah you kids and your clever words.
LEGEND đđ»
Look at his story and zlatan đ both got fights everywhere and won everywhere. Made for united
True, he wasnât prolific, but the team was always better with him on the squad, unless it was the French team. He had a great eye and mind of when to make the play
Cantona won every year's premier league's title in 5yrs apart from that throat incident one
a man of honour
The King.
Genius
Eyyyyy Cantona basically started from my club, AJ Auxerre âȘđ”
.... and the rest is HISTORY!
Great vid
Cantona won the championship title in every full season he played in England. The only time he didn't was when he was banned for half a season. That's phenomenal.
The problem in France is that we can raise the best players in the world, even when they have hard personas like Cantona, but when these guys become stars and happen to have personalities bigger than life then there are no french clubs good enough for them. Marseille has the management of a greek or a turkish club, Lyon has no appeal and will always be a sidekick, Monaco is a tax haven which will never have a winning mentality and Paris will always fall on the last case of the stairs. Our only hope is that Mbappé breaks the curse
Please do a tactics video on Conte's all-conquering Juventus :)
He might kick people but atleast he dont blame the wind for a loss lol.
Kicking peoples worse.
goodness, no wonder he was so quiet, clearly petulant, but what a genius on the ball
So is that how the Cantona chant started.
The difference was SAF Sir Alex Ferguson đđœđ
4:26 flipping the finger??
The subtitles are absolutely broken
Cantona punched Valderamma in the fro?? LoooLL!
How I wish I could go back to 1994
Late but good vid
Ooh ahh Cantona
People like Eric Cantona doesnt have a place in football. People like him belongs to UFC.
After cantona did that flying kick in the changing rooms ferguson berated the players for a poor performance he then turned to cantona " eric you cant go round doing things like that son" i dont think another manager on earth could handle a man like cantona like sir alex did, growing up on the streets glasgow he was used to men doing what men do best make mistakes and accept them for it.
Cantona was great at Celtic after Utd
As a Wednesday fan... Just imagine what would have happened if Cantona played for Wednesday đ đ
If you could just increase the volume
Just run it up lol are you listening to the video while sitting next to a tv
Or my speakers are bad enough to not hear this vid but can hear most other channels

Don't leave us hanging, what happened to him after he joined Manchester United?
Nothing big, just became the greatest bad boy in football's history đđđ
Ended abruptly
Very informative but you left out he spat at GĂ©rard Houllier in the changing room after a match for France & he called Trevor Francis a fucking stupid idiot after he scored 5 goals in a indoor friendly on his debut only to be subbed at halftime.... Yes halftime! Because Francis told Eric to go easy on his opponents!
He should have played in the Scottish league.
Why
Liverpool past to signed him haha ynwa
Zlatan maybe King but Cantona is God
what's a king to a god? what's a god to a non believer?
Romelu Lukaku
He probably worked at Utd because Ferguson allowed talented players to express themselves
Subtitles in the last minute of the video are flawed, though.
It turns out, you only get to do it once
I wonder if a similar story could one day be told about one Mario Balotelli, l'enfant terrible. I sure hope so. Coz it's such a waste of talent đ©

Cantona was Zlatan before Zlatan.
Or Zlatan has been Cantona, but...after Cantona.
Zlatan pretends to be whereas Cantona was a real bad boy.

Still couldn't win the champions league
In fairness the no English club could of when the 3 foreigner rule was in place and Welsh, Irish and Scottish players counted as foreign players, hence Utd playing in Nou Camp in 94 with no Cantona, Keane or Schmiechel.
Stupid comment
On his own?
Over rated big time

Can a black footballer *EVER* be seen by majority white football fans a a"God" the way Cantona (Who was OVERHYPED) was to United?
Henry

Drogba
Pelé and Eusébio are two great players who have been highly regarded both in their home country and the world. Ronaldinho is a Balon d'Or winner and a legend at Barcelona.
On the other front, Zidane is from an algerian origin and you really do not want to get into that discussion in France, however he is widely considered as one of the best French players of all time and a legend at Real and to a smaller degree Juventus.
Cantona helped them win 4 titles and their first one in 26 years. If someone like Salah helps Liverpool win their first title in 30 years, you can bet that he will remain a legend in that club forever.

One of the most overrated players in premier league history
