Berbatov killed the fluidity of the team the following year. Good player though he was, he had no pace, didn't press opponents and couldn't play anywhere but as a CF. This forced Rooney and Ronaldo to play wide all the time if Berbatov played and Tevez got pushed to the bench. It's telling that the 3 forwards of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez scored more goals in 2007/08 than the 4 with Berbatov the following year. Then we lost Ronaldo and Tevez and entered near permanent decline.

@@Wolf_of_Small_St Headcanon here but I reckon the Berbatov signing was deliberate on SAF's part. Why? Because Fergie knew Ronaldo wanted Madrid and there wasn't another player in world football that could replace him.
So he went for Berbatov, pushed Ronaldo wider to play the role of a classic winger as a 442 and in 09/10, signed Valencia to fill that position. It almost won him his 4th title, but Chelsea were better.
Pep did something similar when Zlatan came to Barça. Henry was part of a flexible attacking 3, then was suddenly a LW that held his position while Zlatan played a strict CF role. It didn't last very long because well, that wasn't Pep's style.

Maguire and Lindelof are the lightning rods for United's supposed defensive weaknesses but it's not an accurate reflection. We have the third best defensive record in the league, as we did last season. United's defensive problems are set pieces, where we are dreadful due to zonal marking. And the other problem is the balance of the team further up- we don't have a quality CDM like Fernandinho, Kante, Fabinho etc so the defence gets no protection, while most teams attack down our right as Wan-Bissaka has to go forward to provide width because we have no right winger. Buy a RW and a CDM and the defence will improve.

I remember watching it live, and how grotesque was that Tevez chance after United took the lead:
Ronaldo was beating the hell out of Essien with his speed and trickery on Chelseas right. Ashley Cole sensed the danger once Ronaldo took control of the ball around the halfway line, and had enough of Essiens struggles, so Cole darted straight across to the right touchline to help Essien. If this isnt grotesque enough, they still couldnt stop Ronaldo getting past them, and whipping in a cross to Tevez. The area in front of Cech was a mess: Tevez hit a header so clearly i already thought it was 2-0, but nope, Cech saved it, and Carricks shot from the rebound was also clever: he tried to lift it instead of hitting hard, yet Cech somehow thwarted it to a corner. When the attack broke down, John Terry was laying flat on his back on the 6 yard line, Cech was laying flat on his belly, and Ashley Cole, who first darted across the pitch, ended up standing on the goal line, hoping he could maybe block a shot or something.
And Chelseas defence was actually one of the best in Europe by that time. And still, Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez worked a bit of routine magic, and they ended up looking like they were just a bunch of sunday league players.
We have no idea how much potential and attacking power these guys had.

It is one of the best Man United sides ever to grace the Champions League. Tifo has summed up properly about SAF how progressive he was as a manager. Seeing United now(under OGS) gives the same hint in some department as talking about fluid front 3 as striker changes position in between the game. Only we need to manage to get a defensive mid, right winger, experienced Striker and cb (like Rio) then we could rule the Europe and English football again.

Paul Scholes said in an interview recently that SAF wanted players to play with confidence and have an ability to be able to move around and play in different positions. This is what I find frustating with Utd and probably other teams these days, it seems like a player can only play 1 position. When Rashford moves from LW to RW he seems to lose so much about his game, same for Dan James. I mean, can you imagine Fred playing out wide like Hargreaves used to have to do sometimes? It really seems to stifle Utd's attack when they're finding it tough to break down opposition as they're just doing the same thing over and over, there doesnt seem to be any flexibility. When Martial plays up front alone he sticks to that position all the time and rarely if ever drops deep to get it. Compare that to RVP who used to run channels to link up play, or even Cavani who drops deep and even runs out wide. I undertstand this may be a tactical thing to specialise players in one position but surely its detremental to a creativity and making it hard for an opponent?
