    The sheer brilliance and genius of Sir Alex Ferguson is an understatement. He made a promise to knock Liverpool off the perch and he delivered to his word. Faced multiple competitions like Wenger and his invincible team, Mourinho and his excellent Chelsea teams and the arrival of Manchester City with their Arab money and he beat them all. The ability to adapt to the modern game and they way he embodied his team to never give up. Let's not forget, he won the Premier League title in his final season with one of the worst Manchester United side despite Chelsea and City having far superior players.

    So much has been made about Ferguson's man management, and how he managed Cantona was different from how he treated Giggs, Scholes, and others. The one story that did stay with me was when Gary Neville started to get injured a lot when he became the new captain. Gary has said that he went to Sir Alex and said he should step down as captain because the injuries meant less playing time. Sir Alex shut that down and said Gaz would stay as captain and that Sir Alex would give the armband to Giggsy and Rio. The reasoning was if he had to make Vidic captain, Rio would get mad. If he made Ronaldo captain, Rooney would be mad. It was such an amazing tidbit, because it was the first time I had read about how Sir Alex Ferguson managed a team as a whole and kept the egos in the locker/dressing room from tearing each other apart over the captaincy.

    Ruined my experiences as a young Liverpool fan.

  • @JAYDUBYAH29
    @JAYDUBYAH29 Před 2 lety +123

    Greatest manager ever. He could win the Premier League with a fairly average group of players, as he did his last year at the club, but also identify very young talented players like Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Rooney and Ronaldo, and turn them into global superstars. He could get massive egos working together for a common goal with immense discipline, to please the boss. He instilled a work ethic and never give up attitude that created some of the most magnificent and historic come back wins, often in the last minutes of huge games. The treble is the big achievement, but he won the league for 13 of his 26 years at the club?! Unbelievable record.
    He won 6 of the 7 years between 2006 and 2013! Three of those title wins were after Ronaldo had left for Madrid, and he gave van Persie a swan song and got the best out of aging players and failing young prospects. No one will top it. The 99 team were legendary, but that 08 side with Van der Saar, Vidic, Rio, Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Giggs, Scholes, Evra, Rooney, Ronaldo, and Tevez was just electrifying.

    Alice Saxe departed this world for the next in March 2009, having reached her century, no less, and no more. I imagine the service was well attended, she certainly seems to have been a character - and it wouldn't surprise me if, somewhere in the back row, a dapper Scotsman in a sharp suit had come to pay his respects. He'd never have mentioned it if he had. That anecdote, for me, said far more than any of the footballing analogies or journalists' memories, which is why I felt it inappropriate to use this comment to talk about his career highlights. This isn't about the football. It is about the man.

      Yeah. He was one of my faves when I started becoming a United fan.
      He was a hard-working and energetic player who could perform in any midfield role.

      There is not a human being alive with an interest in football who could argue otherwise. I'm no man Utd fan but Ferguson was just in a class of his own.

    • @ekzxty
      @ekzxty Před rokem

      There is a debate, one that Ferguson has openly acknowledged, and he himself has admitted that Jock Stein was a better manager.
      In my opinion? They were at the same level as managers. Both incredible.
      It’s no coincidence Scotland produced all the greats of management. Ferguson, Stein, Shankley etc.
