The Qatar World Cup has provoked strong and sometimes conflicting, reactions in many people.
In this series of videos, written by James Montague and illustrated by Alice Devine, Tifo explains why the World Cup in the Gulf State is so controversial.
The contest in Qatar is beset by controversy and human rights concerns, most notably the reported deaths of migrant workers. A staggering 90% of the population of Qatar are migrant workers. Why is this number so high?
In order for Qatar to host this tournament they’ve had to build stadia, build infrastructure, build a team, and build a reputation.

Qatar has the worst human rights record in the world. Thousands of workers got killed.
And corrupt FIFA had selected them as a host nation.

Tifo provides when the actual tournament cannot. I hope this is the start of a new, longer cinematic direction for the channel...along with the smaller videos too.
Football as with any other global event is corrupt; HOWEVER whenever the WEST losses a bid they go on a massive media narrative attack. It is obvious that in order to maintain a global order, they need to position themselves as the moral authority of the planet. Furthermore, it goes without saying that this position is beyond hypocritical. Keep politics aside and enjoy the foundation of the tourney, the actual football.

Amazing series. Tifo is excellent at handling difficult subjects that others often shy away from.
Or maybe others just aren't as hypocritical as to complain until the eve of the event and then watch it all anyway as though nothing was ever said, when you're outdone for tact by legacy media, well, almost as shambolic as a post match review by JJ 'waffle bot' Bull.

My best friend's father went to kuwait for work 5 years ago. He works in a Hukkah bar. He owner has seized his passport. He doesn't pay his salaries on time (during covid 19, he didn't pay anything for 6 months straight saying the business is closed). He hasn't increased his salary in over 5 years. He doesn't let him change his job. He refuses to give the passport back so he can come back home. The Kafala system is the modern-day equivalent of slavery and international pressure should be put on the Arab countries to abolish it.

Tifo, you've smashed it. Really, the best piece of journalism I've seen on your platform - and there have been many videos made at a high level. An absolute must-watch.
Really interesting - and surprising - to hear about the 20th century colonial origins of kafala. I'd always considered it to be an indigenous tradition in the Gulf.
Same! Never looked into it. It was that system that made me not move to one of the gulf countries even though it wouldn’t have affected me directly. Seeing the amount of workers working in 40-50 degree midday heat was horrible.

i find it hard to believe that a brit created the kafala system because britain did not and does not benefit from it in anyway like the gcc does and the kafala system is based on islamic jurisprudence. so that guy, belgrave, must have been quite the islamic jurisprudence expert.

Can you make a detailed analysis like this on the 1978 World Cup?...Qatar is just the latest.Fifa and sportwashing started with Argentina 1978..
That depends on whether foresight is a factor we consider as Italia 1934 is an earlier example of FIFA ignoring soon to be obvious problems and giving the opportunity to cover doubts and problems of certain regimes. Of course we know what happend with Italy in World War 2 but its never as clear what the exact thought process was with a sanctioning body choosing a controversial country like Italy in the fascist era. It was clearly more blatant with Argentina 78 due to a Junta with well known human rights abuses being allowed to host. but FIFA has been controversial in this way almost as long as there has been a FIFA.
