May 13, 2007: the final day of the Premier League season. With seconds left in the first half of a match between champions Manchester United and relegation favourites West Ham, the ball loops off Wes Brownâs right boot and into the Old Trafford sky. Carlos Tevez, in default wasp attack mode, meets it and slides the ball between the legs of Edwin Van Der Sar and into the net to secure a 1-0 win for the Londoners.
Although scored in Manchester, this goal had its most profound impact in Sheffield. However, it was a goal with its roots, or, perhaps tentacles, in South America, Russia and Israel, a goal so dramatic it was the end game of a transfer seemingly masterminded by two Russian oligarchs with direct links to Vladimir Putin.
In fact, it was a transfer so murky that it would be illegal now.

TPO aka Jorge Mendes' slice of every portuguese player
Excellent as ever.
One addition to the Tifo History series I'd love is the whole Wimbledon/MK Dons thing.
Alan Pardew, footballing genius, didn't know wtf he was supposed to do with Mascherano, so persisted with playing Hayden Mullins instead.
He said he was going to tweak his game for the premiership. It's like saying I will tweak federers game for the Miami masters. They should've started every game no questions asked. The best players must play
a 69m to 83m release clause for a player like Tevez would be paid in a heartbeat today.
Nowadays we call that "Harry Maguire money" đ
Adjusting for inflation that would be a lot more though, and for a player from outside of Europe it's crazy money
Unless you're Arsenal
Laoch are you mad heâs shockingđ
Me: Can I get a West Ham video?
Me rn: ...About something that wasn't controversial :(
Michael Houston haha, my EXACT thought process during this video.
Know the feeling Mike
Get one done on di canio haha
Michael Houston eh well I was supposed to say payet but.......
This was one of the funniest sagas I remember. Tevez and Mascherano at West Ham was so clearly dodgy that it was funny that a club like West Ham could pull it off.
Wait, the West Ham manager had 2006 Mascherano, and he wasn't playing him? That's another scandal right there.
Not only that, but Pardew played Marlon Harewood ahead of Tevez.
sld1776 Pardew is such a idiot. But West Ham still manage a plus on the transfer fee for Mascherano from Liverpool
Crazy, right? I seem to recall in the few games he did play, he was playing balls that were too good for his team mates to read.
@@TMFitness yeah i remember getting excited about the 2 of them joining, then he persisted in playing harewood and fucking hayden mullens instead !!!!
12 years later we're finally back.

Hope our 20mil helped đđ
Enjoy your 1 season
Wish we had you lot on the opening day, that would set our season up a treat.
Mankind081 and to think, you beat us 3-0 at Bramall Lane that season and moved 3 points clear of us. Too bad you couldnt beat Wigan đ
@Christian Hernandez yeah they gave the club a 'promotion trophy' for the exact point you just brought up... league champions get a trophy, PO winners get a trophy, and the league runners up used to get some kind of shield (which Sheffield United got the last time they were runners up). But since (I don't know), the runners up now get a promotion trophy.
As far as the money question of yours, I haven't a clue.
as a west ham fan that was too young to fully grasp what was happening with what it all meant at the time, this video was super fascinating! great work guys
Old Skele Bones ââââ
@@charlesthebrick5251 they were legally allowed to play ultimately from day one. So why not just play them from day one. Pardew lost his head over this transfer. Both should've started immediately no question
Can you do a video on what undisclosed fees exist and how they affect the game and how they came to be? Thanks.
Andrew Noel thatâs not very deep itâs just when both teams agree to not make the transfer value public, usually because the buying team have overpaid and are embarrassed.
@@sponish0 It's not just that the buying club overpaid. It's often simply that the clubs are guarded about their finances. MLS clubs, for example, never reveal the exact financial details of club transactions, even player contracts, to protect their bargaining power on the transfer market.
@@sponish0 or underpaid, works both ways

Brilliant, as always, chaps. After hearing you mention this incident in multiple videos, I was hoping youâd do a full explanation. No one explains it quite like Tifo đđź
marvelous work again.
Iâd quite like a sequel to this, or at least an extended version, which describes how Liverpool and Man Utd were able to sign Mascherano and Tevez from their parent club/third party ownership. How were those deals done cleanly?
I believe they simply purchased the players from the third party owners.
Tevez moved to United on loan. He was finally purchased by Man City, hence the infamous 'Welcome to Manchester' banner.
Oh, I remember MSI's little adventures in Brazil. Corinthians was a pain in the ass back then but they weren't the only ones doing it. Then again, most people who bought players for their clubs were massive fans of the clubs and would, eventually, see something out of it (see Fluminense and Unimed for a good example).
Oh, and Rede Globo working really hard not to bat an eye towards TĂŠvez and Mascherano at Corinthians was some fun stuff as well.
Great story. Thanks for all your hard work.
Music is soothingly niceeee
Love the music!
Can't wait for the Hammers-Blades 1st matchup
We've played west ham since our relegation and beat them in a cup gameđđ
ISL (Flamengo, Gremio), Nations Bank (Vasco), MSI (Corinthians), Sonda (Santos, Inter), Unimed (Flu), Bonsucesso (Cruzeiro), Crefisa (Palmeiras), LĂŠo Rabello, Eduardo Uram, Tombense, Artsul...Brazil is TPO paradise.
Tevez to Corinthians was just the tip.
That's really fucked up.
I've been asking for this video long time ago
sat here with heatstroke binging tifo cheers!
Watching these videos is like getting a book read to you by a warm fire.
I was deep into a wikipedia player search, looking at stats, honours won, clubs played for etc when I ended up on Tevez' page and I remembered the controversy with Sheffield Utd and TPO, I read the wikipedia part about it but thought to myself, I want to get a clear concise run down on what exactly happened as I couldn't remember the exact details - and I thought Tifo will sort it out . I was not disappointed. Cheers
And yet it still happens every day in Brazil...
ISL (Flamengo, Gremio), Nations Bank (Vasco), MSI (Corinthians), Sonda (Santos, Inter), Unimed (Flu), Bonsucesso (Cruzeiro), Crefisa (Palmeiras), LĂŠo Rabello, Tombense...Brazil is TPO paradise.
love the intro and outro music choice please keep it.
You learn something new everyday
I was excited when these two moved to West Ham...it was like on Football Manager! Unexpected!
And we're finally back in the big time UTB
Although the main focus of the video was the harms it caused in PL, the TPO also f*cked Corinthians. The sales of Tevez and Mascherano, which âprofitsâ ended in the hands of Kia Joorabchian, the remaining Corinthians team in the 2007 season was a complete disaster, and the team was relegated for the first time in its history.
The most amazing thing about this whole double transfer was the fact that Mascherano couldn't even get a bloody game for us! Like you said in the video, he only played 5 times for us before Liverpool bought him. Hayden bloody Mullins used to get in the team ahead of him!!
Think about that for a second..... Javier Mascherano, a World Class player who went on to spend *years* at Barcelona, COULD NOT get in to a piss-poor West Ham team because of Hayden Mullins. Crazy!
Not to mention, we were also offered the chance to buy Tevez outright for only ÂŁ30million at the end of the season. We turned it down because we couldn't find the cash.... only for us to then get sued by Sheff Utd for around the same amount.
Kia Joorabchian offered Tevez to Man Utd for the same price and they bit his hand off!
2006 Mascherano was already a world-class defensive midfielder. Maybe they should have spent money on a manager that wasn't blind.
Love the video. Also the song throughout the video is, If I Had One Wish ¡ Nocturnal Spirits
Good explaination. I also like the soft jazz music in this video ;-)
wow ...what a masterpiece of a video....this has Alex all over it
Now weâre on a journey to the prem 12 years on. About time
I remember like it was yesterday. I was at the gym when it was announced and flashed up on SSN on the TV, they had ex players coming on saying âit shows how we can compete with the big boys and we will push up the table nowâ
Itâs a shame that something that ultimately came back to bite the WHU fans for something they had no control over, gave such hope when it first happened
'Came back to bite them', don't you mean 'unfairly helped them avoid a deserved relegation'.
Gotta love pards
I remember in my youthful idiocy being confused as to why we loaned a player from West Ham who couldn't get in their squad. It took one, maybe two games, before realising why. As if WHU had Mascherano yet deemed him not good enough to play.
Best channel with consistent quality content, what did I watch before tifo..?
It was known as umaxit before the name change.

Cheers for reminding us about this fellas.
Canât wait for Sheffield at home.
Whoâs Sheffield?
Brad - Some Micky mouse outfit thatâs going down.
Vincent Ritchie as Sheffield United fan I look forward to the visit of east London to Bramall Lane this year
Brad - Itâll be interesting mate.
I hope you're not suggesting violence, what did any fan have to do with this mess?
Oh boy đđżđđżđđż
You should do a video about Mehdi Taremi case with fifa. It was a less-than-legal controversial transfer from Iranian giants Persepolis to a Turkish club and it even became highly political.
The Villa - Ardiles transfer would also be a great video
You give the impression that if Tevez hadn't scored against Man U, West Ham would have been relegated, they would not. A 0-0 draw would have still meant that West Ham (39 points) stayed up and Sheffield United (38 Points) were relegated.
Fair call but I think that statement from Lord Griffiths was alluding to the whole season i.e. total points and maybe specifically that last run of games - even though the statement concentrates on 3 points/1 game. Still, if your in the shit at the end of the season its probably a lot of your own fault. 12 years later and the Blades are back up, would love to see some beef with the Hammers đ
Tevez scoring against United to essentially wrap up their survival (even if it did turn out to be superfluous) was just one last punch in the gut for Sheffield United really!
Tevez was the reason why they stayed up though he was carrying them the second half of season and got their player of the year. They would have gone down without a fight if he wasn't there.
Well that was ridiculous too. West Ham did well the season before, these two's arrival actually upset the rest of the team. West Ham lost more games with Tevez playing than they won, including the two games again Sheffield United. How any judge can say Tevez was the reason W Ham stayed up is beyond me
@@CDStoner Absolutely. We scored more points per game with Tevez out of the side than we did with him playing. West Ham fans that could see through the big player hype would have said that the form of Noble, Green and Zamora were more important in those seven late wins. Overall Tevez & Mascherano did more to put us in that situation than get it us out of it.
So why are third party ownerships banned but clubs owned by international states (i.e. Manchester City, PSG) not? Seems the rational for banning third party ownerships (harmful effects on football, it's essential values thus undermining the overall integrity of the game) is akin to what's happening to football under state-owned clubs
The ManCity and PSG situations are quite different. PSG are wholly owned by the Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) corporation, a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority which is a direct arm of the Qatari government. ManCity on the other hand, is owned by a private investor, Sheikh Mansour, under the City Football Group, a direct subsidiary of the independent Abu Dhabi United Group. Almost every single major club is owned by such an investment group and banning this practice is just not feasible in the current climate of the game. The exceptions are of course 'communal' clubs like Barca and Madrid, who tbf, aren't the best examples of financial management.
Your voice is nice
Will you make a video about Fekirâs transfer? He was worth over 60 million last summer and ended up going to Betis for a third of this. And Real Betis have also signed William Carvalho for quite cheap when seemingly everyone in Europe wanted to sign him. Why do players choose to go to a mid tier Spanish club instead of other leagues or more established clubs within La Liga?
Real Betis are building something really special, I'm sure TIFO done a video on them as well that might help you see why players would go there.
Fekir had 1 year left on his deal and a dodgy knee
We are fucking massive and weâre gonna win the league!
IROOOOONS
Ah the last day of that season. me a blade watching us get beat by Wigan was crushing. I never ever laid the blame at West Hams door. The way they stayed up was a miracle. We only had ourselves to blame. Now we can move on.
Hiya. I am a MSc sport management student for UCFB. Im doing a paper on TPO and was just wondering what sources you used for this? I struggled to find much credible info on the tevez case and would love to use it
At 02:08 Corinthians logo is wrong..
Corinthians cabecuda, hahahaha
Vladimir Pewtin. LoL that sounded funny to me.
I did this in my FM save
Jorge Mendes relationship with Wolves will be an interesting video
so is that different then the 3rd party ownership that south American (esp. Brazilian) ones have such as newly arsenal signing martinelli, Arthur for Barcelona, and Everton for gremio?
This misses a key point. Yes, eventually the âindependentâ (ahem) panel found against West Ham but it was a perversion of law. West Ham had already been through the judiciary process twice and won both times against the claims of Sheffield United. West Ham were not required to go to the arbitration but agreed to because they had already won twice. This proved to be a mistake of course. The Premier League gave permission for Tevez to play and at no point said he was ineligible to play, so any assertion they should have been docked points is frivolous, Sheffield should have take the PL to court not West Ham. If you want real examples of TPO, look at Ronaldo to Man United and also several players who went to Leeds (including Viduka) when they had that fantastic team under OâLeary.
This story won't have closer until Sheffield United make it back to the Premier league
The goal wouldnât have mattered as Sheffield I believe drew or lost which meant they didnât get the points needed to stay up in their game
They were talking about the season as a whole when it came down to the ruling, not just the last game.
Even that's rubbish though, their arrival upset the whole team, resulting in a terrible half season. Whatever the case, fans of both teams should have sympathy
Need a video on Neymar's move from Santos to Barca.
Hi, this video was amazing. I'm a Brazilian supporter of Corinthians, when Tevez are an idol and mascherano do not are so markable. The worst part (for me) in this TPO investment are the fact that KIA/MSI want to take the total control of Corinthians and their political and social part. For this reason, divergences became natural even in 2005, when the team wins the league. The biggest problem are that after the players go to West Ham and the contract broken, Corinthians need to pay high contracts and even some money for MSI transitions like NILMAR that came from LYON to CORINTHIANS and play in 2005-2006. The money of that transition are payed until 2009!
This financial problem in Corinthians led to the formation of weak squads, what culminated in the relegation of the club in 2007 for the first time in history. After that, Corinthians win the second division (2008), Brazilian cup (2009), Brazilian league (2011), Copa Libertadores (2012) and the Fifa Club World Cup against ABRAMOVIC Chelsea.
A beauty end for this tragic history!
The ban has effectively halted investment in player development beyond what individual clubs can do. In places like South America & Asia it has essentially curbed huge private sector investment
What a time to be West Ham this was, always been crooks
Please do brief history on Ronaldinho
Itâs interesting how TPOs worked and how West Ham had almost cheated Sheffield Utd to relegation.
Cheated? You know premier League rubber stamped it and said Tevez could play AFTER fining West Ham 5 mill for what was essentially an admin error
If only Sheffield United wouldâve got some fucking points
12 years on, I still feel for Sheffield United, and I'm sure fans are still seething over that controversial scenario.
I'm not wrong in saying West Ham should've been docked points over that, right?
You're right, ÂŁ20m these days feels like nothing. Sheff Utd may have been able to survive for a few seasons or perhaps even establish themselves like Bournemouth and earned so much more.
I'm a neutral, but will definitely be supporting Sheffield when the two teams play each other.
@@theskankingpigeon965 Same!
Yes you are wrong. They were fined ÂŁ5 mill by the premier League and told they were good to go, the third party agreement was of no benefit to West Ham (in fact it allowed Tevez to be sold at any point) whereas other clubs (cough man u) had been getting away with tpa's for year that affected what happened ON THE PITCH) for example "we will sell you this player if he's "injured against us" Sheffield United took six points off West ham that season and had literally no one but themselves to blame for being relegated
@@CDStoner Spot on.
And If I remember, Sheffield Utd, were 10 points clear of relegation with x games to go when they went on a losing streak that had nothing to do with West Ham. Also, again, from memory, other PL clubs had started bitching about Tevez (Crystal Palace and Fulham if I'm correct) but suddenly went quiet when they secured safety. It was only Sheffield Utd who started on their crusade against WHUFC (with bloody Sean Bean wanting to ride a horse to PL headquarters or some bollocks)
Not quite. As I understood it, West Ham were circling the drain and it was decided a points deduction would make no difference. After all, what's the point of deducting points from a club about to get relegated, even with an Argentinian superstar? WHUFC were fined (correctly) for failing to provide the documentation. The next thing, WHUFC went into a purple patch and Sheffield Utd went the other way, entirely independent of each other.
That's not the right Corinthians symbol at 2:08 :(
TheLastOfTheOrder uhm yes it is
@@diegoramirez7985 no it isn't
It's the third time i see them using the cabeçuda symbol, i think they don't wanna change
Cabeçuda hahahahahahhaha
It's wrong, very wrong
Almost 15 years later this still boils my blood, even as a neutral. The amount of fraud, collusion, and rule-breaking necessary to make this happen and almost nothing came of it. Sheffield United did enough that season to stay up, and West Ham cheated. No other way to put it. They needed a ringer scheme to stay up. It was too bad, Mascherano and Tevez are two of my favorite players of that decade. But that season... they did the devil's work... and the devil was Red.
Sheffield United were 10 points ahead of us in relegation battle, so they only had themselves to blame for bottling the 10 point lead
âSame old West Ham, taking the pissâ đ
Now do Alejandro FaurlĂn (QPR, 2010-11 season, who was owned by a TPO but saw zero punishment for QPR)
Always so seductive Tifo
Please do barcelona sensible transfers like so he can see
"My name is Alan Pardew and I have no idea what I'm going"
TPO third party ownership = add manager option in FM/CM
it wasn't Wez Brown it was Rio Ferdinand
But in some way or form, this third party ownership still exists in Portugal,I wish you try to investigate this please just to be clear.thanks I will appreciate
In this case, what happened at United? I was a massive fan but we chose not to sign him. I was under the impression that just as stated here, it would have been illegal.
Does Tevez still have the ability to move without a fee?
It was a strange loan deal. United paid MSI for a 2 year loan deal and at the end of that, Tevez chose City (maybe because they paid something like ÂŁ47m to MSI or maybe due to the wages)
Ir wasn't Tevez that relegated Sheffield United that season... it Sheffield United's form that relegated them... they threw the points away rowards the end of the season and deserved to go down.
what's the intro song?
such a great thing they banned 3rd party, more money stay in football. If they could somehow ban also the agents would be fantastic
Tony Neculai You canât ban agents. Most you can do is limit agent fees, but even then theyâll find ways around it.
@@MashiatCOD99 I know, you are right, that's the law, every player can have a legal representative, and clubs would take advantage of players who sometimes are just 18-19 year old kids. But it is getting ridiculous at times. The Agent of Neymar(his father lol) got around 40 mil commission at the Barca transfer, this Raiola mafiot asks 20 mil or more at some big transfers. They are just parasites, don't do anything to deserve that money. It would be better if those money remain in clubs or go directly to the player themselves...
Tony Neculai I completely agree. But they have the negotiating power, as itâs quite as simple as âYou wonât get my client unless you pay me as wellâ. I believe it should be that the player pays the agent, as it should be, and the agent should not get any compensation or commission fees from clubs, unless they are brought in as a fourth party to broker a deal. Maybe now this will stop agents acting selfishly and instead doing whatâs best for their clients.
@@MashiatCOD99 exactly

The thing is the third party markets were ban becuase its all illegal I don't know how westham even got Tevez and mascherano for an undisclosed fee which is not even fisable in today's market thats why fifa banned it simple as that really.
Moss Cow didnât realise Tifo was American
Cough cough ** Jorge mendes. Do a video on him, he makes football businesses shady as they can get.
I think Raiola is way worse than Mendes
"WE HAVE NO DOUBT THAT WEST HAM WOULD HAVE SECURED THREE FEWER POINTS IF CARLOS TEVEZ HAD NOT BEEN PLAYING FOR THE CLUB"
When someone uses this logic in football........ you know they just want to find fault in something
You can punish a team for playing a player who is not supposed to be on the field against you, but in terms of punishing them for beating united with an illegal player, that's rather petty from Sheffield..
Yeah, it's nonsense. The transfers were very disruptive, Mascherano was terrible for us (I believe we lost every game he played, until he was dropped for Hayden Mullins), as was Tevez until he got fit. Yes he was insanely good for those last two months and earned us loads of points, but we shouldn't have been in such a shitty situation in the first place.
You can never know for sure what would have happened otherwise, but to say you have "no doubt" we would have been worse off without them is nonsense.
Neil Warnock is so unlucky đ
You forgot to mention that we would have stayed up with or without that goal on the final day.
And that in January 07 Sheffield United were 8-10 points clear of WHU and indeed beat us 3-0 in one of those last 9 games. Just saying...
