When Manchester United Were Last Relegated

- The relegation of Manchester United, from the top tier of English football in 1974, was a seismic football event, evidence of the enormous decline and mismanagement which took place in the wake of their European Cup triumph in '68.

"I used to go missing a lot, miss usa, miss canada, miss england" - George Best
I can remember this season (just!). Manchester Uniteds fall from grace coincided with York City's best ever season and, for one brief year, they were both in the same division. York's game at Old Trafford is still the largest crowd to ever watch a York City match.

71-72 they threw away something like a 5 point lead at Christmas. They were actually title favourites before the holiday matches. Losing at West Ham on New Year's Day started the decline.
That Denis Law backheel was one of the most memorable Manchester Derby moments
Up there with the Rooney bicycle kick and "Why Always Me?".
The man was heart broken after scoring it. It wasn't literally the goal that put United down, but it try telling Dennis that the moment after he scored against his old club.
How could laws backheal not be mentioned???
All he does is read out the league table!
You are asking us to respect Dennis' contribution to the match, but you can't even spell his name as it should be with an upper case letter to start?! Show the man the respect he deserves....Law's back heel...that's how it should be done. Not trolling, just saving you the embarrassment. @@jimtuite3451

Do you mean DENIS Law?

"Relegation hurt, but it led to reinvention." Being a Carlisle United fan, that statement's all too true when The Blues were finally dumped out of the Football League in 2004. Got back up at the 1st time of asking with 2 straight promotions to League One. Was certainly a weird few years
One thing I learned from this is that Arsenal need to be relegated😂
Lol
Nah fam we're good
Fuck oof you inbred utd fan
Promoted in 1919 and never been relegated since. Can't deny that's something
@@tailonspoliski4435 - Yeah, promoted by gaming the system, corruption and preventing better sides to play in the First Division. Can't deny that's really something.
You can't talk about Utd being relegated WITHOUT mentioning that cult Hero Dennis Law scored the goal for Man City which consigned them to relegation.
Law's last game as a professional.
united were relegated by the other fixtures already
Andoni Tomazou nonsense, results elsewhere meant we were already down.
Even if he didn't score we would've been relegated anyway
Harry MUFC absolute rubbish, at the time he scores results were going utds way so it was good goal that effectively relegated them at that time
I was there. Law scored and then trudged back to the halfway line with the air of a man who had just run over a nun on a zebra crossing - he shrugged off his City team mates when they tried to congratulate him. As it happened United would have been relegated even if they had beaten City, as results elsewhere went against them.
Their last game in Div One that season was at Stamford Bridge where they beat Chelsea 3-1. I was there too.
The solitary season in Div Two was no disaster - United attracted bigger crowds to their home games than any club in Div One and bounced straight back up
As many would remember, the home defeat to rivals Manchester City was the final nail in the coffin, with regards to Manchester United's relegation, and the goal that did it was scored by none other than former United favourite Denis Law, with a cheeky back-heel no less. There was no trademark arm-in-the-air celebration. He felt so bad and responsible about causing United's relegation that not even his City team-mates who crowded around him could do anything about it. It's a moment that would still haunt him over thirty years later. He was substituted soon after and later on, the fans invaded the pitch in droves, perhaps in hopes of a replay of the penultimate match. Yet, the 0-1 result stood. Here's the kicker, neither Denis Law nor many other fans realized that it wasn't his goal that confirmed United's relegation. His goal was inconsequential as the relegation was due to results elsewhere, meaning had United won City, they would have still gone down.
cool story
Can you do a video on Greece's unlikely euro 2004 win
worst day of my life
@Mr Clean They always used to score with less than twenty minutes left. They were all players from the Greek league, playing against Zidane, Henry, Nedved, Ronaldo etc. So basically defending for the last couple of minutes was the smartest thing to do. They put on a defensive masterclass in the quarter final and the final. They were the ultimate underdogs of the competition and they won the title by beating the best countries in Europe. It was one of the most beautiful stories of the history of football. Period.
Dante Intx
They were extremely lucky. It was the right place and right time for Greece

There is documentary to be found on you tube called Too Good to Go Down. It is all about the drop into the 2nd division and the retun to top tier football. Fascinating to hear all the players and Tommy Docherty speak about the time. I feel for Dennis Law when I see re runs of that back heeled goal for City against United. Damn near broke Denny's heart that.
My last coach played for that FA Cup winning game. Some amazing stories he had and so much football knowledge.
What’s his name
You can see certain parallels between when SAF left and when SMB left, both had players from the old era holding the team back, but where the influence of Sir Matt made the job of future managers more difficult, the issue with the current team was more managers working too hard to scrub the influence of Sir Alex and stamp their own identity on the squad, (Sir Alex has largely stayed away from the first team, unless asked by the manager to get involved) and where in the past it took relegation to reinvent themselves, it's taken a former player to reintroduce Sir Alex's style of play to get the team playing closer to their potential.
Oof, that second half hasn't aged well
If there was no Munich crash, the players we had would’ve won us 3 champions league

I've been a united fan since 1993 the year I was born, my family are united fans since the 50's
Kent born United fan here: millionaire for a pound every time called a glory hunter. This relegation season was the year I made my choice as a 7 yr old, inspired by the story of Munich and the Busby Babes. My dad teased me that I'd change my mind after the relegation was confirmed but that's not me. I loved the Doc's 70's side and was off my food for a week after losing to Southampton in the '76 final. Relegation wasn't my low point: Mourinho was. It's so good to have United back. It's not the winning, though that's great. It's the intent. Play your way. Play to score. Play to attack. Play with pace. Wonderful.
I was four years old, so do not remember it. My step dad brought three suitcases back home for me in 1980 full of complete seasons of MUFC programs. Seasons from the late 40s thru 1978. I read them all over and over. When I was 16 we moved to NZ from Milton Keynes and they sold them in a jumble sale. Would have been worth a pretty penny by now. The thing is though, those programs made me well aware of the post Busby slump and thought similar was possible after Fergie. The manager round about after Fergie is almost an action replay. We always come back, so i am not worried.
Its the begining of 22-23 season and ManUtd is going towards relegation at the current pace.
Looks like history may repeat itself.
SuHaIL hopefully

Tifo, a video on Mike Pheelan and Solskjaer is badly needed and frankly long overdue.. but in all seriousness, thanks for your great content. love the attention to detail, character and love you put into this. Keep it coming.
Always interesting to learn about the history of clubs. Everyone has a starting point and struggles. Awesome👍
As a young United fan I say thanks for the history lesson 🙏
I remember the season well. I remember Dennis Law playing for City and back-heeling United into the second division with a goal he could scarcely celebrate.
wow, loved the sad tone of the narration on some bad moments of the video. very subtle touch that added a lot to the quality of the material
Epic and informative! Awesome work.
What. a. video. The comparison they’re trying to draw crystallises with the final sentence. This channel is another level to most football content.
Glad to see some Paul Ansorge content here. I think the last I saw of him was on the world cup history videos but I may have missed some in autumn / winter.
this is quite surreal given what is happening now
I'd love to see a 1993 video when SAF put all his faith in replacing his departing stars in youth players.
I have a feeling that could happen next year and I'm all for it. The Class of 2020 is frighteningly deep and excellent.
Your videos has been dead spot on, very entertaining and soothing to watch. Could you please do an analyst of Liverpool Offense, because they seem to having problem on that lately. You forgot to mention the match that they were relegated. A 1-0 defeat versus their derby rivals Manchester City with a backheel goal by the former United player Dennis Law

What an amazing story even through hard times. Slightly similar now though we won’t ever get relegated again but a turn around is in the works in 2019
Relegated by City, the only time City ever had a claim to doing something related to a rivalry with Man U in its entire history up until 2011.
Oh shut up "our club didn't exist back then" 😆
Wrong City won the old first division the same year that Utd won the European cup in `68.
@@markant9534 That didnt make it a rivalry. They were 2 years removed from 2nd division. They had a few great years, started the begining of a rivalry and then ended it by returning to their place as a bottom feeder, mid table and relegation fodder team. Rivalries are deep, they dont form and last in sports based off a couple years. Calling City a rival before the mid 2010s is grossly ignorant of what real rivalries in football are. Just go to Boca-River, the Istanbul derbies, or Milan derby then come back to me.

It's a media myth that Denis Law's backheel relegated United, United were all but relegated prior to the game and results elsewhere on the day just ensured that they were relegated.
