The image is iconic: Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer toeing the ball over the line at Camp Nou to secure Manchester United the treble in 1999. But how did they get there?
This is a story of how manager Sir Alex Ferguson learnt from previous failings, came back stronger, adapted to the continental style of play and inspired his side to never give up.

The way Manchester United won the treble is really unbelievable. They defeated Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle to win the FA cup in an emphatic fasion and Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter, Juventus despite being in the group of death. They overcame Fatigue, suspension, injuries and had many players who came from youth squad. It had everything from added time goals, squad rotation, team play to key substitutions and unique tactics. They were so good but still aren't talked about when there is a debate for best squad ever to play football.

it is quite crazy how football in England really started evolving, and how raw it still was during the 90s, you'd have teams like Middlesborough sign some amazing players, do poorly in the league but go all in on the cups & the idea of peak fitness wasn't much of a thing - you'd have players play drunk etc. Also rec football faithful; 90s hall of fame series for some good look back at that era.

I agree Fergie could have won the Champions League more. United should have atleast got to the 1997, 2002 and 2003 finals in my opinion. Especially '03 when it was held at Old Trafford. But United met holders Real Madrid and were beaten in the quater finals 6-5 on aggregate.
Whereas '97 and '02 United were knocked out in two semi finals to Dortmund and Levekusen pretty much on a whimper.
It is debatable whether the 2009 side were capable of beating Barcelona but the 2011 United team had no chance. That Guardiola-Barcelona were magnificent and at the peak of their powers.

It is super weird but United seemed to play better in the first half of 1997-98 and much of 1999-03 than they did in 1998-99. Just 1999 the fixtures and performances aligned at the right intensity and consistency as well as favourable European knock out ties. Still it is the greatest achievement in SAF career and his time at United and second only to the recovery from Munich as achievements in the club history.
There was a collectors video set with memorobelia where they did the history of the club, it came out in summer/autumn 98. I remember clearly at the end of the video the presenter saying something along the lines of, "we don't know the future of what will happen to Manchester United, but it will have to be something very special to surpass what has gone before." Then it cuts to the squad photo for that season. It is the squad that would go on to win the trebble.
Could have said that any season and released it any season, but it just had a great effect being released at that time.
