Fun Fact: In France they call the Hunger Games 'Battle Royale with Cheese'
In Indonesia they call it " Battle Royale with Shit."
Now I want to watch Pulp Fiction lol
You're a good man.
Nicely nicely mate
Because of the metric system?
Fun fact: The book opens up with explanation on battle royales with a wrestling mark describing it while watching an AJW battle royale
Also Final Fantasy was in the class in the book too I think. But he was also in a street gang and suffered a severe head injury in a car crash, which was why he kills so easily.
@@massiveprogressive9488 he was and in the womb had a frontal lobe injury which explained his morality (kinda) it also indicated he was just an asshole. Plus other differences his hair was slicked back like a Yakuza plus he was freakishly talented but when he grew tired of something he just threw it away.
and that mark really loved Takako Inoue. Judging by her coffee table books I can see why.
I loved that preface!

The cute Japanese girl V1 was fawning over is Yuko Miyamura, the voice actress of Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion
Dunno if this is correct or anything, but didn't she also voice chun-li in one of the street fighter games/anime?
@@MoonspiderHugs She did. In the Street Fighter Zero and EX games, as well as a few Marvel vs Capcom games
That means V1 is a mark for two Asukas 😃
@@MoonspiderHugs She was also the voice of Aisha of Outlaw Star.
I guess you can say Yuko was ready for Asuka.
The girl in the instructional video is a voice actress that is really famous for the voice of Asuka in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Getting somebody who can pull off a cute anime voice was perfect for this role lol. Takeshi Kitano is only known for Takeshi's Castle in the west, a clip show version of one of his comedy shows where it's supposed to be ridiculous and impossible to win. He offered large cash prizes for people to play ridiculous games that are incredibly difficult/silly. This also created the idea of the "Japanese game show" in foreign media when tbh most things think as game shows are comedy shows.
Takeshi is a famous comedian, actor, writer, TV host and more in Japan with one of the longest careers among his peers. This was a huge cameo that made no impact on foreign audiences because most will know him as "funny gameshow host".
Mortal Kombat & Annihilation back to back.
Palpatine Voice: Do it.
And it. Will. Be. GLORIOUS.
Make it an hour long. Dew IT

Suzanne, can you handle this? PUBG, can you handle this? Fortnite, can you handle this? I don't think you can handle this
Because of BR's extremely limited distribution in the US at the time and the fact Collins is some normie who's consumed mainstream media all her life, she's the only one I ever actually believe when claiming not to have been familiar with this.
21:15 Come on guys, it wasn't suicide it was autoerotic asphyxiation gone wrong.
That's how Kill Bill died, in shoot.
I think my favorite part of this movie is the nerds hacking and I'm surprised you didn't mention one of their weapons was the little tablet that showed them where all the necklaces were so they would know if someone was approaching them. They basically were the ones that won the game even though Mr. Final Fantasy killed them, not only because they deactivated the necklaces (the thing most likely to keep the kids all playing) but the explosion they set off blinded Mr. FF which made it much easier for him to be killed. Without the nerds the game probably would've gone drastically different and Kiriyama probably ends up winning in the end
I think the reason the dad had his pants around his ankles when he hung himself was just to add to the horror of the situation. Not just walking in on your dad who's killed himself, but he's also half undressed and wrapped in toilet paper. Weird, doesn't make sense, unsettling, and it would just be another thing that would be hard to process about the situation
The specific song is 'Dies Irae' (the Day of Wrath) from Verdi's Requiem. Amazing if you can see it performed lived with a proper choir. Very good review, lads. Love this film.
Kitano is a director and actor first, Takeshi's castle was just him fucking around
“why are his trousers down?”
Maybe it’s like in father Ted when he steals a priest outfit even though he is a priest, and he just says “it just seemed to be going that way”🤣
One of my favourite films of all time this. Looking forward to plowing through this review tonight! Thanks brahs!
Man, read never the Book, the Movie is terrible in comparison
Thanks for the Nailz warning. He's by far the most disturbing this about this.
"Isn't it a fact you have a personal animosity against Nailz?"
"No."
"Do you hate Nailz?"
"Yes."
The guy that invented the battle royal mod for arma named it after this movie. He then went on to make pubg. Also he's from Ireland.
Why was his pants down...he was pulling a David Carradine!
One of my favorite scenes is when Shogo Kawada is given his survival bag. He immediately runs out the class, but a few minutes later he returns throwing the bag at a soldier and points to a new bag saying that's my bag. That's how he got such a good weapon
Could probably tell from just they weight
He went back, because they gave him the girl's bag what she threw at Kitano, so he went back for the bag he was supposed to get if she kept it.
The singer in my high school band gave me a burned copy of this movie around 2003. What a classic. Used to show it to my friends that never seen it.
The clip of teenage bat attacks in Tokyo made me think of Paranoia Agent and sure enough, that series was produced several years afterward. Holy crap OSW, weaving together all of my cultural threads and not even calling me a couple of days later as a token gesture
Battle Royale may honestly be the most influential film of the last 20 plus years
This hour flew by, very enjoyable review. I also appreciate how you're making these reviews available to those on CZcams!
Glad you dug it my dude! This was a ton of fun to record, nice to do some good films for a change 😝
@@OSW Thank you for the reply! :)
I believe the main thing stopping somebody camping at the door in the book was a rule that said anybody who didn't leave the vicinity of the school after a certain amount of time would have their collar explode. The school was also the first danger zone about fifteen minutes after the last person leaves.
Since it's almost that time of the year review Battle Royale 2 for Christmas since it is technically a Christmas movie, it takes place on Christmas. The way the teacher and Shuya say Merry Christmas is hilarious.
The final boss of the movie should’ve been Vader.
The yellow runner is Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill IIRC.
Just finished my masters application. Time to kick it with OSW GET IN LADS!

The battle without honor and humanity song is actually from the follow up series New battles without honor and humanity - still by fukasaku
The point of the ending I think was that she was the only he thought was the nicest one and deserved to stay alive. If I remember correctly, she was the lone survivor in the manga. I think
It was Jonathan Ross, who was doing a tv series on Japanese culture back in the 2000s, who got me to buy this film.
22:00 Knacker cameraman in his white umbro shirt.
Can of Scrumpy to you!
I know OSW only did this to be able to say, in the thickest japanese announcer accent: BATTUUURUUU ROOYARUUU!!!
You're taking crazy! ...👀
@@OSW You should hear the teacher from Battle Royale 2 yell BR 2!
The movie's title in Japan is バトル・ロワイアル which is pronounced Batoru Rowaiaru.
You guys need to watch Old Boy
Original and remake. One of the few decent American remakes.
@@anachronologist2017 remake sucks!
Never saw the movie, but I read the book. The ending of the book seems much better than the movie though.
Thanks for the review, OSW.
I picked this up on VHS for nearly £30 in HMV's import section, immeidately regretted my decision for wasting that much money on a film which instantly turned around again once I watched it. Spent the next few years showing it to any fucker I could. Banger review, lads. Appreciate the extra care and research you sink in to these.
Ah cheers for the kind words mate, glad u enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun getting to hotdog about something GOOD 😆
Saw this in early 2000's. Definately re-watch worthy. Best film review for you guys so far.
I had no idea of this movie, so glad yall lads exposed me to it and many others. A can of Coke for you! Love you braahs
I FOOKIN' LOVE OSW MOVIE REVIEWS!!
Rambo Apocalypse vs Naito is all I see.
Started watching this, then had to stop. Just because I then went and watched the film again. These reviews just put you into the mood.
In an alternate reality, there's a Vince Russo directed Battle Royale
There were multiple ladder matches to see who makes it to the island
The last two kids have a 3 out of 5 fall match to see who wins
And of course all women are dressed in lingerie because Russo
And then Russo himself comes out of nowhere, kills the last kids, and wins the whole thing himself.
And all the packs with the random weapons in are on poles.
Takeshi Kitano, everyone's favourite happy slappy jappy chappy.

Still working on a 2-hour Christmas present for you brahs 😉
The book and the manga are both very good as well. The manga goes deeper into the backstories of the villans while the book best describes the history of the contest. Really need all three to get the BR lore. There's even a one-off book about the short girl in the lighthouse.
Well, bump this thread. I am enjoying the secret reveal playlist that has been hidden from the algorithm. Truly fantastic work on the film and game reviews. I often have to avoid spoilers for like a year so i can have time to consume whatever media i am behind on. I finally caught up on the RE8 review, almost as long as it took for you to get to Wolf of Wall Street, and props to you fine folks at OSW Review. Sláinte brother! Trying to skirt by CZcams's restrictions 😂 Hope ya enjoyed the review too, love this film. Such a freaking incredible idea and execution. But it's just another schoolday in Dublin!
Watched this video twice today (Live and Upload version). Love the film reviews. This one especially. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this movie but this brought it all back. So crazy how it inspired a whole genre of films and games. Never knew it had a sequel but I’m glad to know I should never see it lol.

the next film from Japan you need to do is 'Audition'
Hell, if they are going the strange route, they should do Visitor Q.
Review the Japanese movie Get Up which is about some Yakuza that tried to kidnap James Brown but end kidnapping an impersonator that has dirt on Japanese politicians.

Final Fantasy does start all gunned up. He has a Fan as his weapon. Scene on the beach where the kids are toying him and then he gets there weapons by killing them
24:00 The title card should say, "Everybody Out Of The Pool", in keeping with the wrestling theme, as in the Royal Rumble.
OMG. One week ago I was trying to describe this movie to a friend of mine. I had seen a CNN Asia news story about it during a trip to Vietnam in Dec 2000. But I could not recall the name of this movie. Thank you 0SW. And remember, there are no coincidences.
Hatchet kid gave me Charlie Kelly hurricane survival vibes. Grab Jackie DeNardo and head for the bunker.
🗡️ Hey when did u first watch Battle Royale? What did u think of it at the time?
Around 2007/8 I think. Loved it, just seemed very different to what was out at the time.
2003 watched it a good few times in the first couple of months, loved it and had to show it to people, not watched it since but want to watch it now after watching the review
I'd watched it in a English lesson and had to do like a exam piece on it.
I reckon I saw it in 2002 maybe, making me about 17yrs old. it was on dvd and I was probably stoned with my buddies in my mates shed. The film blew my mind. I really felt the sadness of some of the characters being in such a situation and having not been out of school long, it was kinda freaky to think what I would do in the same situation. I've not seen it since, but it stuck with me.
@@TheoAndHisPedals you basically gave my answer but 02 I was 21 lol
I think it was his legit daughter that called Takeshi in the end. Could be wrong, it's been years since I've watched these films.
Yeah, it was his daughter Shuri who is in BR2
This is making me wanna dig out my copy of the book & reread it - definitely worth a read if you love the film.
Also, I'll bet money that the girls in the lighthouse were the inspiration for the manga series School Live, which is about (at least at the start) a group of girls pretending to "live everyday life at school" while sheltering from a zombie apocalypse.
That sounds interesting; I’ll have to check it out!
The Belko Experiment is a great film. You forgot to mention Mayhem starring Glenn from the Walking Dead. It's like a wierder Belko Experiment.
regarding the "weakness" discussion, I feel depending on the particular circumstances that's not accurate. to use the wrestling analogy: if, in a battle royal, you managed to strike a deal with four other guys to work together until you are the last ones, the chances of you succeeding would be incredibly high.
and I figure something similar would apply to any of these disaster scenarios: unless the single individual has some other significant advantage, a working-together group will probably always do better.
Awesome review boys! I'd love to see a video about the movie Oldboy (2003), that movie was revolutionary for Asian film, with audiences around the world taking notice.
takeshi castle was called MXE most extreme elimination here in Canada, the announcer were fucking hilarious.
It's MXC in 'Murica
A riddle sneaky...
Just a riddle
Bravo boys.
around 28:13 the word Jay was looking for was *groomed*
don't know why in 2016 it became trending again, when hunger games came out 2012 and not 2016. I suddenly saw everyone watching it around the city like they didn't saw it back in 2000.
Holy Balls... My two favorite world's colliding
About time hey Jay ;)
It's also clearly the influence behind the 24/7 title.
one of my fav films ever. love the way the film gets straight in there after the water smashing against the rocks
One of my favorite movies.
1) I can't believe I hadn't wtched this review until now. 2) I fooking love this film. I saw it at the cinema I was working at when it came out in England in 2001. 3) Can of coke for the "Rage of the Drgons" soundtrack drop!
The ending in the novel is a lot different to the movie, In the book It had interview or written up piece by the director explaining why he changed the final part. Thought it was unrealistic for school kids to be doing. So this explains why the movie ending is a bit of a mess as it changes course from the book.
Definitely worth checking out Fukusakus earlier work!
Loving the consistent weekly uploads, keep it up boys 👍
Bye-noculars XD
I remember the 1st time i watched this around 10 years ago then saw hunger games and was like wow they ruined that concept lol.
The thing that ruined Hunger games for me was soon after the battle royale started, a group of kids are just walking around causally like they going for an afternoon stroll. I never got the feeling that kids had a sense of danger for what they were doing even tho they had months of build towards it, compared to battle royale where they've thrown in to the situation
That’s Pedowood for ya..
it was pretty much considered a classic over here by around 2001-2002 didn't take too long to catch on over here for many
Kiriyama drew the paper fan. He stole the Uzi when the other kids tried to round him up and kill him.
He drew the uzi in the manga, and probably drew it in the book too.
Who'd win a battle royale between OSW?
Jay gets a rock, OOC gets paper, V1 gets scissors.
NGE's Original Asuka VA was the Instructional VHS woman.
Loved this movie when it came out, and still awesome. The weirdest bit for me was that like so many of these age grouped movies, the cast is a bit older than reality. They look from maybe 16-17 to early 20's. Which is fine, cool. What I didn't get is why Fukasaku would choose to have the class be a 9th grade, middle school class. Seemed like an 11th or 12th grade high school class was the natural choice given the cast.
I think it's just because the original novel put them in 9th grade and they decided not to change that.
I’m glad you guys didn’t mention The condemned 2 lol It was an alright movie though.
Oh shit they made a sequel?! Any fun bits u remember?
BEST. MOVIE. EVER!!!!!!
PUBG the guy who created said he based it off the movie that's why one of the weapons you can pick up is a frying pan
The hand scythe as well was specifically added to the game as an homage to the movie
Fucking great review lads!
I missed it so watching replay on a monday, sorry lads i apologize
Fuckin' love this film. Watched it with a friend for the first time several years ago on Netflix.
Love the doom code reference I use it for passwords all the time
The Story of Ricky review would be cool.
dear lord yes...but demonitized within minutes after upload ;)
Hey theres a Japanese series on Netflix called Alice in Borderland that uses the survive to win concept...I'd say it almost like a mix of Battle Royale and Saw.
49:00 the movie didn't inspired the manga, the original novel inspired the manga one year after it's publication
Don't know if anyone already mentioned this but Pot Lid here, Tatsuya Fujiwara played Yuuta Usami in Yakuza 6 along with Takeshi Kitano!
Battle Royale > The Purge
This movie! I think I first saw it in 2004. It stuck with him. And it also led to an interesting Thanksgiving. I had pretty much cut the cord for a while so I was not up to date on movies and trailers. My 10yr old niece (at the time) was explaining to me a movie they just saw (my brother, sister in law and my niece). I was being explained the premise and I said "Huh... I guess they finally made the american remake of Battle Royale.... I have no idea how they pulled that off considering. And why are you letting her see this?" Then I was explained that it was based off a teen books series that got big. Turns out it was Hunger Games. I was like ".. You sure its not based off a Japanese movie Battle Royale?" Needless to say, they told me that Hunger Games didnt have a scene with a severed head with a grenade in its mouth being thrown through a window. Lame
I worked with a guy who had a ton of import movies and this was one I borrowed. I was pretty cool.
Thanks gentlemen. Love the Rtype intermission.
y'all should watch tony jaa's "the protector"
YES!
For those of you with Amazon Prime, you can watch this movie for free. That is if you can deal with ads inbetween parts. Glad I looked up where I can watch the film before viewing this video.
Just an FYI Takeshi Kitano even before this movie wasn't just a game show host. he has been in the TV and movie business forever and is the MOST respected and powerful personality period. He is basically the godfather, He is the Boss period. People on his shows put up with his terrible jokes and laugh or get slapped over the head and take it etc, i am pretty sure he has Yakuza ties most of his life and now. He is also famous for his Weird art etc. I always wonder who is going to take over as the next most powerful personality on TV after he passes. Before i Moved to Japan i also thought Takeshi was just some tv host and movie actore but he has done it all and is much more than all that. He was actually a comedian before a tv host and just managed to take over. Also there are only like a few thousand movie theaters in japan, the market is Hella Small, so you can never compare numbers of Japanese movies to anywhere else.
Great insight mate! Can of coke to you
He also had a video game named after him on the NES.
I saw this movie while I was in high school and ever since I’ve seen it I’ve always compared everything to it especially hunger games like I’ve already seen it it’s called battle royale
I remember seeing this movie on HMV shelves in the UK when I was a teen... mid 00s? I could be wrong. I fucking love this film, I've got the novel as well.
I need to check out some of those yakuza flicks.
