- We are joined once again by Adam Denker of Locked on Lightning to check in on the Hart Trophy race, which we all believe is still a two headed race between Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche and Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning. What has changed since we last did a cross over with Adam a couple months ago in the race? Has one pulled ahead, has there been anyone new to the mix joining them (McDavid)?

One thing I got out of this is that Kyle makes an interesting point. Does the Hart goes to a person that wills his team into the playoff, or a player/leader that makes his team better, that doesn't only expect more out his team but also more out of himself. I think the race for central is not only going to win MacKinnon the Hart and the Art Ross naturally, it's because to him winning is everything. If its going to give the Avs advantage of home ice, he's all in. Propabaly Zadorov said it the best“If I were to build a team, I would build around (MacKinnon) over those other two guys."

I had an opportunity to hear a VERY small portion of another team's Locked on podcast. And I am so glad we have you guys. Your honest and transparent. This is what listeners appreciate 😁😁
I've seen several Avalanche players poke the puck, while flat on the ice, to another player.
I've not seen any player other than a furied MVP Nate Dawg go 200 feet with the puck, untouched, and score a goal.
Surprised that the ice didn't split in half.
And it's absolutely fine Nate got pissed off at the non-call. That's a "Here we go!" moment.

Regardless of who wins, can we all just appreciate what we’ve gotten to see out of Mack this season? It’s the best season a player in burgundy has ever had and there are still 11 games to go. I do think if it’s so tight it feels like a toss up between Mack and Kuch, I think the combo of Macks streaks along with Kuch mocking the all-star game will be the deciding factor. I also think it’s definitely a three horse race and our last two games vs the Oilers could play strongly into the decision.

I think a great player is even more impressive when they step up and elevate an already excellent team.
If you're talking about which player has a 200 foot game, talking about Kucherov hitting is kind of a joke. MacKinnon lays more hits, and has blocked TWICE as many shots.

Oh, BTW, Kucherov is a +6. Mackinnon is a +31, with a so-so goalie. I rest my case.

You guys make a real good argument for Nathan going all out for this award. My gut feeling is that he cares somewhat about it, but mostly does not.
give him another Stanley cup and if the prize goes to someone else, I do not think it will break him that’s why we see such selflessness & top flight to score, he sends out a pass and someone else,
well,
the whole team gets the goal. Saying all this, I’m reminded of Captain Joe Sakic. An absolute 10:33 sniper, but But greater than that, all about the team.

When you have the conversation of the MVP it only comes down to 1 fact you need to consider Mac is chasing history and a Gretzky record and he’s within grasp ,,, just Mac being in that conversation makes him the winner

As an Avs fan, I understand the argument for Kucherov. The reason I understand is that it is the same argument we had for MacKinnon in 2019-20. MacKinnon was 43 points ahead of Makar, the next highest scoring player on the team. Draisaitl was given the Hart that year, playing with McDavid with Draisaitl winning the Art Ross and McDavid coming in 2nd.
Firstly am I biased? Yes! But Nate for the hart, here’s why
Nate is SECOND in NHL history for longest home point streak behind the great one
Now holds the most points in a single season for the Avs franchise
These two things are unlikely to be beating for a long time (if ever)
All in one season this is clearly his best season of hockey so far so he should be reward with the Hart
But there’s more, some of those other things that might get overlooked, no Landy so stepping up as a leader, helping LOC to his first ever Hatty
Also I get the argument for Kucherov and how he’s pulling the lighting into the playoffs
But there’s more

Kucherov - 6
Mac - 9
Nate has clearly been more valuable

Mackinnon definitely wants the Hart, and I hope he gets it. However, there’s no denying that Kucherov is having a great season. Vargar makes a good point about McDavid.
As far as Captain, Nate leads on the ice through example. Makar is the guy you put in front of the press. You can tell he was watching Landeskog.

I think Vargar's argument is weak for McDavid. When people talk McDavid all they ever bring up are points, which there are other trophies for. Yes, the Oilers had a decent run this year to get out of the basement, but compared to the season Mack has been having, McDavid shouldn't be in the conversation.

Mikko was by far the MVP of the team last year. If he hadn't single-handedly kept the team afloat in December/January, the Avs wouldn't have made the playoffs. He tallied 50 goals and over 100 points and didn't even make the conversation for the Hart. It's a mystery how they determine "most valuable."

Bottom line is at the end of the season sometimes somebody is gonna get snubbed. MacK has already been snubbed in favor of Kuch. This time around it's gotta go the other way.

Makar won the Norris despite 10 less points than Josi because he's the best defenseman! Take away the points & it exposes serious flaws in Kucherov's game & season overall. MacK is head & shoulders above Kuch in all aspects hockey. Kuch has shown he takes shortcuts while MacK sets the standard: on the ice bull rushes and driving play & off ice workouts (inspiring guys like Ritchie to emulate). It isn't even an argument IMO

Yeah, I agree. That’s always been my argument. I’d give up awards and money to be a CHAMPION.
The Cup is the grand prize. It doesn't mean individual awards are meaningless just because they aren't on the same level as a Cup.
@@LockedOnAvalanche , I agree, but I’d rather be a champion any day. Even Jack Johnson (whom I love) and Nico Sturm will always be remembered as such. McDavid can have all of his awards. He’s nothing without a Cup(rhetorically speaking, of course).
@@thekidcomn5938 I think the big difference between guys like MacKinnon and someone like Sturm are things in addition to Cups. Someone like MacKinnon wants to be known as one of the greatest ever. Cups are taken into that equation but for someone like him so is MVPs, scoring titles, All Star appearances, everything. So for Sturm him career achievement expectations are a lot lower than MacKinnon.

If either of these teams were missing Kucherov or MacKinnon they'd be much worse teams. Kind of a moot point Denker makes.

kuch lost me forever when he hurled his gloves at a member of the TBL staff like a big whiny pee-pants baby in the waning seconds of game 6 in 2022. Frustration is one thing but being a classless a-hole to someone on your own team’s staff is such a bad look. Chuck helmets at other players like a reasonable human; don’t take out your anger on your staff/coaches/trainers.

@@petrpumpkineater Correct, he does. Which is why I made the helmet throwing reference. 😉 However, there’s quite a stark difference between shouting at your coach and physically assaulting someone on your team’s staff who is just doing their best to help you. It’s not a good look for kuch.
Kuch has 7 empty net goals. Get rid of those and he isn't in the conversation.
