Willis Reed walking out in the 7th game of the 1970 finals is THE Knicks moment. He had a torn thigh muscle and wasn't supposed to play. A couple minutes before tip off he came strolling out of the lockerroom. MSG went crazy, teammates got fired up. He scored the first 4 pts. That was all it took.
I just commented on how Starks became my Hero as a kid with that dunk! As a small pg… it meant everything to me!!😂
Strangely.. It was even better being there was no internet so u couldn’t just rewatch highlights a hundred times.. it just lives in ur head & it became bigger & more spectacular as time went on 😭 over time.. he had a cape on in my memory of it 😭

I disagree that the game was so easy for him. From all reports I have seen, it was not that it came easy for him. He just out worked everybody else. He practiced with the same intensity with which he played, and he demanded that his team mates give their all as well. I think it dishonors the legend that is and was, Michael Jordan, to make like this all came easy for him. Great people usually become great through extremely hard work that others with equal physical ability, just never put in the hard work to match.
This video gave me a lot of respect for John stars because a lot of Mike’s rivals don’t admit to how great he was John Stark has no problem telling us how mike was! Respect 🫡

Mike changed his whole workout regiment to be able to go deep in the playoffs and finals. There's video of his trainer and Rodman telling how Jordan told him to be at his house in the morning.

But he still smoked his cigars and stayed out late and golfed 18 holes before games at times and would drink a bottle of beer or two before games at times. That's not the purpose of his statement. Plenty of professional athletes who handle their business first and party later. Jordan knew his body also and he was completely different. Mind over matter. Most athletes would have horrible games if they didn't get the proper sleep you needed to play on that level night in and night out consistently. Again Jordan was just wired differently! Be like that sometimes. There are some athletes that can do crazy things like that and still be great, very little though. When Jordans first few years in the league he didn't do any of that. Smoke drink etc. He was basically a saint and separated himself from the team when they did things like that. It's documented also on video. Especially his first couple of years before Pippen came on board. Mike's rookie year his team was called traveling cocaine circus. He explains some of that in the last dance also. Jordan is my guy forever but he did not take his body as seriously like a Kobe or LeBron. Watch Redeem Team on Netflix and see what Kobe did and how LeBron and company saw that work ethic off the court and how it spread down to the whole USA team.

I swear i really-really miss this era of bball. The intensity, physicality, just everything. To take it a step further i really miss this knicks bulls rivalry. The knicks were like the perfect bad guy for jordan. They were awsome enough to extract greatness from mj, but never enough to beat him.
If Ewing was a clutch player the Knicks would have won a series. He had the biggest mismatch on the floor but couldn’t cash in. The biggest games in a series are usually 5 and obviously 7. Game 5 in a 8 pt loss, he was 5/14 with 14 pts and 7 Rebs. Game 7 which he guaranteed they’d win, 8/19.

15:02 great point about MJ's mastery of fundamentals. He was very economical and efficient. As much as people compare Kobe to him, Kobe expended much more energy and moves with dribbles, cross overs, etc. MJ was much more precise.

Kobe was pretty fundamentally proficient as well. I am not saying he was better than Jordan, but his fundamentals were second maybe only to Jordan.

He had a better first step than Kobe. Kobe was athletic as well, but he was not quick, hence the need to put in more work to get to his spots. Both are phenomenal players and almost the same. Almost.

Listening to John Starks's comments about Michael Jordan has helped me understand him a lot more. I hated that guy when he was with the Knicks. I wasn't one of those Bulls fans who booed him out of the building. I also forgot he and Jordan were on the same team once.

Ronnie I agree. One of the main things lacking for many youths today is a good father figure in their lives to model and demand a good work ethic.
So many of them truly think the world owes them just for existing. They have no personal accountability society has taught them nothing is their fault.
@tracyjohnson5023 I understand what you guys are saying, but my Father was an alcoholic. He started drinking after ww2 and was (as my mother said) never the same. Because of that, it was our Mother, my Brother and I heard screaming in the crowd and encouraging us not only to play hard, give it our all but to be good people and to pursue as much education as possible. She always felt that education was the key that opened so many doors but enjoyed watching us play sports and succeeding at it. We grew up in the projects, but because of her, we not only succeeded at sports but got our degrees and have succeeded in life because of what she instilled in us. We never missed our Father and never blamed him for not being there as our Mother never did. We need strong Father's, but there are some tough moms out there, and ours was one of them.

Why is it important to make this assumption?
That era of basketball made every player better - mentally and physically. So many tough players that tip their hat to Jordan. That was some of the best basketball we will ever see because the competition was at its highest!
That 93 Bulls Knicks playoff series is so memorable to me. I had made a bet with a friend on the Bulls. After the Knicks went up 2-0 he was talking trash, saying to just go ahead and pay him now. I was the one collecting in the end though, lol. Such an exciting series, a classic.
That was a epic series tuned into every game here in Chicago watching the bulls was a must!

@shawnmarques7117 it was over once the Bulls won game 3. The only chance the Knicks had was to go up 3-0 and hope to beat the Bulls one more time. That Bulls team in particular (91-93) once they beat you, they knew how to beat you and you didn't have a chance after that.

Starks main problem in my opinion was that he was streaky, he either was hot or completely cold. Used to love how he got into opposing players head.
I was a Bulls fan, and Starks was so dangerous. You never felt like Ewing or any one else on Knicks would beat my team, but if Starks got going he could. Thankfully at least for me--he was cold a lot too. IT was either inferno or invisible.
Starks, in that interview after the scuffle, showed how a man talks on another man. Nothing but respect for this guy!

Born in 82 from the DC area a Bullets fan but EVERYONE was a Jordan fan. Im very loyal to my home teams and I had a Jordan jersey back then. Everyone loved Jordan. Proud to say I got to watch him. My favorite games I still watch are those Dream Team games. Man, that squad.

Watched an old Jordan interview video the other day from era where he'd recently retired for the second time.
One thing that really struck me was MJ saying that players new to the NBA shouldn't get sponsorship deals or shoes named after them until they've proven themselves worthy. He said their salaries were already paying them too much for potential. They need to earn the rest. I absolutely agree with him.
That was a great great series. Starks and Ewing and boys played really hard and really rough and the refs were letting it fly.

Great video… Starla was a competitor and got his but he shows the ultimate respect as well as the ultimate complement for a guy like Jordan, “the most fundamentally sound superstar”. That’s goes back to the old joke of the only person who could hold Jordan under 20 points was Dean Smith. Michael took that tough coaching and became unstoppable
starks was one of michaels fav player to play against with he elevated jordans game to another gear... basically jordan was going to eat when he played the knicks and starks. but what i love about it john starks never gave him anything easy he made sure jordan earned every point he scored against the knicks.. i grew up watching them and what a great time it was....

It makes me a little sad to see these highlights from the 90's. All we have now is legalized traveling, professional wrestler level flopping, run to the 3pt line forsaking offensive rebounds, piss-poor fundamentals, players playing half the schedule in a WNBA version of what once was the NBA.
You are 100% right, but you gotta admit that the level of skill and athleticism is off the charts this season.
@@Spud_E_Buddy Across the league athleticism is better than the 90's, and there are a few players with elite skills. The League moved away from physicality allowing these great athletes to mask their LACK of basketball skills and piss poor fundamentals. Grandma could lob 3pt shots all night but who wants to watch that?

@@Spud_E_Buddy LOL... only a handfull bother to D'up. Running at a guy lobbing a 3 isn't D'ing up. Nobody is questioning that athleticism is important, but Defense is more of an attitude than a skill. Skills show up when you can get your shot off without getting two or three free steps... and make it. Euro-stepping is what they used to let the junior high girl's team get away with.

I lived in Chicago during the 90's. Every Bulls game was an EVENT. Imagine being able to watch your favorite NFL team 82 times a year plus the playoffs. It was amazing!!!
Starks was a great competitor! It's a shame that they had to come up against MJ. Him and Ewing definitely would have gotten a ring otherwise.
Starks would have gotten a ring if he wasnt chucking and would pass. He was the problem in game 7 against Houston.

Starks was 2nd best option which was already a problem and the same chucking that lost them game 7 almost single handedly won the finals for them in game 6. The Knicks did Ewing wrong not getting him a real 2nd star player and letting starks be an x factor at best
A lot of guys would have gotten rings if not for Jordan. Clyde and Hakeem are lucky he retired or they aren't winning shit
@@madterps Knicks were also up 3-2 in that series so overall they blew it and I'm a Knicks fan. Pat Riley should have put Rolando Blackmen in and it's something he admitted years later in the 2000's. And as a Knicks fan now that I'm older I can say they were lucky to even get into the finals because Chicago really had that one game that the ref called a ghost foul on Pippen letting Hubert Davis shoot those game ending free throws. It's wild to think that the Bulls without Jordan were possibly going back to the finals. I think Game 5 was the famous NBA on NBC game cut short due to OJ chase.

Jonh Stark doesn’t get mentioned enough when we talk about guards. This dude was something to see against MJ. Any other player would be broken down over the years with the Knicks during the 90’s. @@FuShengAlex you think so? I don’t know. The Knicks got size, grit, talent and nastiness with a 5 times champion coach. Daly was great, God bless his soul. But he was not Pat. Ewing, Oakley, Mason, Stark, Wilkins, Xavier, Allan Houston, Daniel Smith..those guys were much bigger than Pistons with speed and skills on average overall. Plus you got to see how to defend MJ from the Bad Boys. So you know what to do strategically, physically, and mentally. They battled so hard with the Bulls so when MJ took a 2 years break. They were worn out to win against Hakeem and them boys. Nevertheless it was an era with great basketball, Pistons, Knicks, Pacers… Bulls kept us inside when the sun was outside in the spring.
@@michaeltiesto the Pistons had big time shot makers in close moments (Isiah, Joe D, Dantley and Aguirre). Laimbeer was a very good spot up shooter.....better than any Knicks frontcourt player outside of Ewing in the 90s.
The Knicks would always play hot potato in cruchtime around Ewing.
By the time Houston arrived, Ewing was declining and becoming lesser focal point of the team. Xavier only had 1 season in NY
I'm a Knicks fan and loved that '93 team. We were the Bad Boys 2.0 only from an aspect of being very physical. Outside of Ewing, we struggled to get an offense flowing which was our undoing. The Pistons beat the Bulls up plus they had multiple guys (Thomas, Dumars, V. Johnson, Aguirre) that could put the ball through the hoop. If we had some of that Pistons' talent that would've made the Knicks a more formidable opponent.
What I love about J Starks is that he acknowledged MJ's greatness and admitted to his deficiencies, yet still went out there, played his best, and embraced their shared battles. I am not sure today's players are of similar cloth because, in the heat of battle, many of these cats do not wish to admit that their opponent is on a different plateau...
Great stuff! Loved seeing it. Watched every second of those truly epic series against the Knicks and, to this day, some of the best, most dramatic games I've seen. So cool seeing John Starks talk about this cuz, as a Bulls fan, ohhhh man we couldn't STAND him...but it was cuz he was just so tough, scrappy and skilled. I always will respect Starks and that whole team cuz it doesn't get better than those games. Two extremely well coached, talented, hard nosed defensive teams that played similarly and knew each other really well. Hats off to you John Starks and thanks for such great memories man
As a lifetime bulls fan it was nothing better than watching the bulls and knicks especially at MSG. I remember game 5 that was one of the best defensive stops ever. Go Bulls!!

What John Starks says about Michael Jordan's WILL is important and telling. When the debate comes up for the greatest Basketball player and one of the greatest athletes ever, people do not take Jordan's will into account. But this is the singular thing that made him the greatest. LeBron, Kobe, Dr J, Kobe, A.I. (Allen Iverson) even Clyde Drexler, and OTHERS just did or do not have the will of the mentality of Michael Jordan to win no matter what. These other athletes are as gifted or more gifted physically than Michael Jordan, but they didn't or don't have the same mental makeup as Jordan. This is what separates Michael Jordan from the rest. Only Kobe Bryant is a distant second.

I hated the Bulls and Jordan, in that order, when he played. In fact, I started the "ABC Team," Anybody But Chicago Team. However, what this film doesn't show is his turn around, fade away, jumper that was deadly and unstoppable. When that shot was falling, you were pretty much done. Great film, great memories, and yes, now that he is retired, I will finally admit that he is one of the greatest to ever lace 'em up. Pure artistry on the offensive end and what is even more impressive is that he played defense. He played both ends of the floor.
It' nice to hear John Starks talking with such a high perspective about MJ. He was there to do his job the best he could, which was to try to stop MJ. Bastketball is a physical and mental game. You have to expect a lot of friction, aggresive behavior, and high levels of competitiveness. It's not soft, it's rough. And MJ took that as an ignition power to take his game to the highest level. Now a days the NBA is not like that anymore. It's boring. I miss the NBA from the 80s and 90s, those where the golden years.

It's sad his #3 was not retired by the Knicks. Unfortunately, he cost them the chip and played terribly in that fateful game 7 in H-town. Every time I see that 3 Knicks jersey, I think of Starks.

People are always using the argument that MJ and the Bulls never faced a worthy finals opponent. The journey to get to the finals was the hard part.
Utah swept the Shaq and Kobe lakers in 98, and met Jordan with the statistically worst supporting cast of his championship winning teams, and lost in 6 games. Pippen wasn't healthy in the finals, and the Bulls were the oldest team, yet MJ led them to victory. Phoenix in 93 was a great team that would have won if not for Jordan having one of the greatest performances in a finals series. Arguably the greatest performance in a finals series. He beat Lakers after having swept the Pistons for the first championship on the way to the finals, WITHOUT another all-star teammate (Pippen was not an all-star that season). They swept Shaq and Penny in Orlando on the route to the finals in 96. Pat Riley's Knicks and that Portand team led by Drexler in the early to mid 90s are underatted. The 96 Sonics were a great team. Jordan forged those Bulls championship teams in his competitive image, after the years of abuse from Detroit.

Man...I just love seeing Jordan in his prime against all of the incredible ballers throughout his career. He just moved like a gazelle and was just a unstoppable scorer. I'm grateful to have been able to see him through college and the pros.
