She's strong enough to get over herself and think for what's best and ask for help not for herself cause we knoe she can run away on her own but for the people she love. The writers for One Piece KNOW the source material and they love this story. You can FEEL the love they put into it, you can see from all the easter eggs and the designs and...everything. The actors care about the story, the writers, the directors, everyone.

The whole Garp plot it was actually Oda the one that suggested it.
Since he has admited he wished to introduce Garp much sooner.
And also if you read the manga, you know Luffy is the 3rd time Garp fails being a mentor figure.
So from a more realistic standpoint i can see why Garp wants to test Luffy.
Its the 3rd time its happening. This is no coincidence anymore.

But it can't have been Oda who rewrote Arlong to want to go to the grand line and enslave humans, since he specifically went to less contested area to not have to deal with the strong marines.

It's not about copy pasting the story 1:1, it's about retaining the soul of what the original was trying to convey by leveraging whatever quirks the new medium has in the direction of a common creative vision
Zoro’s backstory is what hit it home for me… cause the fact that we got Kuina saying what she did and sticking to the source material shows how much respect the show runners have for Oda’s work.

It is true that Kuina believes that she will be weaker than Zoro when they grow up but not Zoro.
Since Kuina's death is a key part of Zoro's drive to be the greatest swordman in the world. Kuina had always beat him, so if he becomes the greatest swordman it means Kuina is the greatest swordman in the world because he never beat her so forever in "his mind" she is better than him. And in doing so realizing her dream too.
I never read the source material, but I really liked that Kuina said that. I think almost every girl thinks the same, whether they say it or not. You're like "one of the boys" until one day you're...not. This is a generalization, but generally boys get more good out of puberty than girls. For girls it's one big confidence crises and a lot, a lot of pain. Girls still need to hear that the most important things aren't going to change. Zoro stepped right up and gave her confidence back, and that was the moment he became my favorite character (after Shanks).
During that dialogue I turned to my husband and said "Woah, I can't believe Netlix let that slide, but I'm happy!" That line, that whole scene gave me goosebumps.
There's nothing wrong with what Kuina said. It's a fact of mother nature after all. Well done Live Action team & Oda.
Oda put his foot down, clearly said, you want my story, you do it my way, and fair play to him for doing it, its a beloved story and hes spent essentially 26 years of his life writing it, any writer whose got a big enough head to think they know better than him how it should be written shouldn't be working on it
He started publishing one piece when he was about 21 or 22. And he was working on it for pretty long before then. He's spent more than half his life on this work.
Oda is a man of integrity, honesty, commitment and sheer frigging will. Something most Hollywood writers aspire tonst never will reach.

And before you subvert expectations, you have to know how to tell a normal story first
If they had the talent to make something better than the original, they'd be making something original of their own. Or at the very least, they'd have recognized that their purpose isn't to make something better than the original, but to make something that is as close as possible to being the original somehow transmigrated to a different medium.
Rings of Power has the virtue of at least being a mostly original story (albeit set in an established setting) but it's also terrible on its own merits. And it doesn't even respect the established setting it's using.
It's actually wild to hear about showrunners ignoring source material or even proudly stating they never touched/interacted with it. Almost begs the follow up question.. why do you think you are qualified to bring this to the screen then?
I always got the impression that studios felt the need to put a "new spin" on things because they felt the source material already told "A" story, and they needed to tell a different story in their version. They couldn't fathom the idea of bringing the source material to life would satisfy people because they had already seen that story. I felt that way with the live action Ghost in the Shell. There were the good scenes, mostly the fan service portions, and the bad where they diverged greatly from the original.
I also feel they change stuff up because they are unprepared to invest in recreating that world. The original takes place in space...too expensive, lets change it so it takes place on the back lot of a movie studio. I felt the extra details they put into OPLA were great. I especially loved ALL the casting. When a new character was cast, the person always resembled their animated counterpart. It was fun to finally see them in their costume and playing their part.
I think for the next season they need to extend the season for a few more episodes. I feel like a 3 episode arc might help tell a little more of the story without having to sacrifice too much original material.

There is romance, it its a different type of romance. It'd the romance of adventure.
Thereis plenty of romance but not one the main characters as much. You can see the romance being more afyer times skip on relationships like Kyros and rebbecas mother oden and toki. There is also much more sex relationship than you can see ex dofy and viola, smoker and (the vice admiral girl). Ussop and the syrup village girl etc.
But that's the cool thing the are extra stuff and not the main focus of the story.

My biggest problem with adaptations is that these writers always go in with the “What should we change?” or “How do we make this different?” mindset. It always feels like those writers WANT to be different, and leave their mark on a story, instead of just adapting it.
One Piece feels more like it was a passion project made by fans of the series, and not just someone who’s trying to twist the story into “theirs”. The actors love One Piece. The changes feel concise and cut out only small details. There’s references to FUTURE EVENTS of one piece (Jaya and Jinbei come to mind). And (imo) most importantly, Oda (writer of One Piece) was involved, and oversaw the project.
They must speak Latin... "Resumen" means Summary in latin, not your own Resume.
the One Piece's writers problem was "how do we change stuff without changing the substance?. Often times writers stop that question at "stuff"
Oda himself is in charge to supervise that the adaptation goes well, Netflix did the right thing sticking to their author and not trying to mess using ideological bullshit.
meanwhile adaptations like LotR, Harry Potter, Discworld(smaller audience but still), one piece, and... twilight... show that making a faithful adaptation works no matter when you make it
So true on that, Animation and Anime can be adapted into Live-Action but the main problem is not the type of project you tackle, is the writing and execution this hollywood producers do. Sometimes they don't understand how to make a good project and tend to change it into something wethever comes in their minds. The Scott Pilgrim movie from 2010, the new One Piece series on Netflix and other successful adaptations (like Sonic movies, Mario movie, Detective Pikachu movie by Rob Letterman, Alita: Battle Angel by James Cameron, Alice in Borderland series, Rurouni Kenshin and now FNAF movie) proves that if you find ways to adapt the source material and hire people who understands more, you might find success.
Honestly Hollywood's biggest problem is that it's full of Writers Rooms that have people who don't like to read. It's not really talked about like a serious thing, but a writer who doesn't like to read is like a person who talks at you instead of to you. They're about their ideas, their POV, their concepts. The greatest writers are spoken about in the same tone as the greatest painters because they challenged themselves to master an artform and find individuality after. A lot of college graduated writers don't really master the artform as much as they master the process, and the fact they don't care to read makes them narrow. I know it seems weird, but it's like that. Matt Owens read One Piece, and I'm pretty sure Steven Maeda had as well. I know Matt Owens had communicated a lot with the Fandom directly and he showed what the series meant to him. He read One Piece and he loved Oda's ideas. He recognizes Oda as a master of the Artform and someone to learn from.
They probably do like to read. Yaoi and yuri along with modern works by slash fiction writers that write about how the women are strong and abuse the men.
Genre fiction has been massively popular for hundreds of years, in part because it's essentially expected that writers are all reading each other's work and expanding upon ideas touched on in other stories, all under an umbrella of similar works. A mystery or sci-fi writer who has never read a single book in their genre before is unlikely to get very far, and even less likely to produce anything remotely resembling the target genre.

@@NotAGoodUsername360 I'm saying that it's not like that anymore, and the quality shows. There's a lot of writers who straight up aren't interested in reading other writers, and a lot of these people just get by on their degrees. They probably read a decent amount in college but after that, it's all about them and their ideas and they exist in an echo-chamber. This mostly applies to TV and Movie writers, not actual authors, but it's a very real thing and the quality is noticeable. There's A LOT of Bad Writing in Hollywood right now and this is a big reason why.

And the most amazing part is, this is not a 1:1 adaptation. They did make changes here and there, and not even small changes, and yet still, EVERYONE loves this one piece adaptation. A slightly different script in order to be able to actually adapt a work, and yet still respectful to the heart and soul of the source material.
These absolute frauds from other studios have ZERO excuses. NONE. The One Piece adaptation did everything these people claimed to be doing (including diversity lol), and yet people love it. No more excuses for these people.

I spent some time thinking about this, and I've come to somewhat of a conclusion that may explain it.
Because of some of the changes they've made to the stuff Aarlong's pirates have been doing, including burning down and slaughtering this entire village onscreen, they may have excluded hacchi from the Aarlong gang entirely and are saving him for the later arcs entirely, since hacchi is mostly a good dude and didn't really fit with the whole "fishman supremacy" vibe that Live Action aarlong *really* pushed. Especially since he's so important later on, excluding him now wouldn't really cause any problems so I think it worked out just fine. @@nolabratteig988
A 1:1 adaption of anything would be near impossible, if you look at the LOTR movie trilogy compared to the books the timeline is scaled down and story elements are cut out or altered to fit (no meeting Tom Bombadil, Saruman dies at Isengard instead of the Shire in the extended version, etc), but the important story elements are included, and the casting, costumes, and scenery are meticulously made to detail from the illustrated lore. The amount of effort to stay as true to the masterpiece as possible is what separates LOTR and One Piece (haven't seen it myself except for what was shown in this vid) from the woke dreck who think they're 'improving' a story by heavily butchering the narrative and race-swapping to fit their ideals.

One of the biggest draws of One Piece is the 'nakama' aspect of the show. Your own chosen family. That's honestly one of the biggest reasons why I love OP. Friendship is so underrated and it annoys me when romance suddenly pops up in a story. Just to be clear, I have nothing against romance. However, for it to be forced in a plot kinda ruins it for me. The NamixZorro thing would have killed this show. I'm not even exaggerating. The moments when they bicker in the manga just warms my heart. They're like cantankerous siblings with each other. Romance would kill that.

One Piece has never shown any romance yet since it's unsuitable for the series and the series is more focused on freedom as a concept that drives the world of One Piece.

We got a male and a female character so we need a romance and a sex scene or else the movie is worse - no god damn it romance is what makes movies worse. Romance is usually the worst part of a movie or series be it Harry Potter, Avatar the Last Airbender or Star Wars. It's just way too cheesy, unrealistic and annoys the hell out of the viewers which are here for anything else but romance. These picture perfect love stories are as far away from reality as they could be.
There is a whole genre of romance films why do they need to put it in every single movie as well? I'm so over this crap because love is so fucking overrated and nothing but chemical processes in your brain. Once you figured that out those fucking scenes straight up just annoy the hell out of you because there is no reason for it being there but enforcing the narrative of love and relationships for the viewers so they keep getting married and have kids which are the next generation of slaves to keep society going.
I'm at a point right now where I'm so over it that literally just a kissing scene makes the movie or series lose points in overall rating for me. Sex scenes are even more pointless and annoying. Can't we have stories without love shit? It's time for people to grow up and finally get that life is no fairytale and that most couples are highly unhappy together after a while ESPECIALLY when kids are involved.
Also sorry when the world is endangered, my life is in danger, our whole species could be killed, the spaceship crashlanding on an alien planet YOU NAME IT happens, the last thing on my mind is romance or love and shit. It's so freaking forced and it literally stirs not a single feeling in me. I'm just happy when the romance crap is over with so the actual movie can keep going.

@@raydafuq3570bro Chill out, romance can be good when it’s done good. I dunno if you are being salty from personal experience, but a lot of couples are happy and in love even more when they are old. It’s allright if you don’t want it but some people do, and it’s not just chemicals in your brain really. If that was true then you could say the same about any kind of relationship, family bonds and friendship included.
I actually loved Katara’s and Aang romance, because contrary to what some people think, real romantic love is based on friendship just as much as a platonic friendship, just with chemistry and passion on top of it.
A scientific study shows that 2 in 3 long term relationships start off as friendships, that usually last at leasr two years before evolving into romance, they are the ones who work the best and last longer. and the more they invest in their friendship, the more they are in love as well. So Kataang is actually way more realistic than you think.
What I dislike is “love at first sight”. And in that case then yes, I agree. That’s just chemicals in your brain and nothing more, and fizzles out very quickly. That’s called “infatuation” and it shouldn’t be confused with real romantic love. Maybe that’s what you were referring to when talking about “love”?
The reason many couples are unhappy now it’s because they mistook infatuation for love and ghey believed in the “love at first sight” bs, getting married without really knowing eachother or caring about eachother. it was pushed so much in movies of the ‘900s.
I dislike the sex scenes as well by the way.
It’s allright if in Onepiece there isn’t romance in the crew, but there’s a place for it in media and is very much real.
It’s not fair to shit on people who relate to romance and are actually happy after years of marriage, or to call them “delusional” because you haven’t experienced yourself, because I assure you, it’s the most wonderful feeling to wake up next to your loved one every day. I live it each day.

Been seeing a lot of reaction videos of OPLA from non-one piece fans and the fact that it made them laugh and cry the same way the manga did for me the first time is a testament enough of how good the live action adaptation is.
I went to OPLA without any idea what One Piece was about. I didn't think much of it at first because I thought it was nothing but a story about a childish pirate boy but I was wrong!!! It made me laugh, cry and root for the characters. Luffy's positive perspective in life was infectious! I find myself smiling everytime I see him on the screen. Zoro's drive to succeed, Nami's accountability, Ussop's love for adventure, and Sanji's kindness was inspirational! It made me want to be like them! It felt personal, like I was one of the Straw Hats. Gosh! I wish I could articulate my love for them better.
I am so thankful for the live action because it opened the OP door for me. I loved it so much, I even started reading the manga. 💕

@@artofbrypaz To be honest, OP felt intimidating to me at first because 1. Some fans are kind of intense 2. There is so much material already, I dont know how to catch up. But Im so glad I gave it a shot. I loved it so much, I even convinced my senior Mom to watch it with me as I re-watched it. She loved it too! She cant remember the names but she admired ”Rubberboy”s (her nickname for Luffy) outlook on things. And I think that's where OPLA succeeded in- despite the changes, it brought the HEART of the manga to life, making its audience resonate with the crew... because at the end of the day, aren't we all just Straw Hats, trying our best to overcome our adversities to reach our dreams? ☺️

he's Luffy, but a different Luffy. Cause a 1 to 1 adaption of him would've been cringy as hell, instead they managed to nail his 1 neuron energy while still making it different and enjoyable. In the teasers I was so not on board with his charachter, but seeing it as a whole it really does work
The casting is great overall but goddammit did they nail sanji. I think this might honestly be the best version of east blue era sanji.
And Garp, Garp's actor is good too.
Well, they cast all other actors for different roles... But luckily they found a wild Luffy running around in mexican jungles...

So I was working at the Cape Town Film Studio as a ship rigger during the production of One-Piece's live action, and i really gotta say the vibe on set was really awesome. People got along well, there was always a lot of laughter and wholesomeness between takes, and it was without a doubt the best job I ever had. I even got to be a background character! I'm really happy with how it turned out and really glad I was a part of it
Do you know of the movie sets will be preserved for tourism ? It is a waste to tear it down and will be great for the economy

More like infamous. But yeah, i do hope they at least keep the sound and light stages, even if they tear down sets for different productions. Unfortunately the grounds are small and built on a marshland so keeping anything for long there isn't really viable. They do get to keep some stuff from earlier productions though, which is pretty cool, the ship masts viewed from the main road is pretty iconic. I have a lot of hope for the SA film industry, i'd like to go back after my tour in the USA but i guess i'll have to see. Thanks for the comment, it made my day

Most likely but he really shouldn’t have to. Everything shouldn’t have to go through the creator. Netflix should have people who know the original artwork in and out and respect it enough to do it justice.

@@lizzfrmhon you will always get the best data from the creator of something over a fan. Fans inject their own headcanon all the time. Any fan who says they don't is lying, especially with one piece where there is endless mystery to wonder about.
Making sure Oda had the final say was key. And most important, it made sure that he could keep up the tradition of foreshadowing. And there is some EXTREME implications of that foreshadowing based on what was prioritized.
We all know Coby is going to fight Luffy in the future in the original source.
But because of how Hollywood is?
We know for sure now that it's going to be a massive, devastating battle where Coby and Luffy are challenged on their deepest core beliefs and its going to destroy us all.
You don't build up a character like coby for as long as they did unless he's coming back.
So minor spoilers, I will try not to write anything specific, but just general here. Oda has a habit of bringing everyone one back into the story, even if they're a minor character or an antagonist who you would assume their story is well and truly over. So with the way Oda has told One Piece a character having major buildup and huge narrative importance could easily be put on the backburner for 5 real world years, while we get callbacks and references to minor characters in the pervious arc. Oda loves to tease new people joining the crew all the time and usually it doesn't happen for one reason or another.
While yes we do see the Coby vs Luffy the situation and the fight it's self is completely not what most people expect. If Oda keeps it the same in the live action it won't be how you think it will go down

As for why I say don't trust build up.
So in a future arc we meet a character called Vivi in chapter 103 who follows the strawhats and is a major important factor in the arc she is a part of. We have this character for 100+ chapters and everything is building up to her joining the crew and being a permeant member of the strawhats. Mind you at that time they spent over 50% of the then current one piece release dealing with the main issues of Vivi and at the end of that story line she doesn't join the strawhats. For the next 800 or so chapters we would get minor references to her either a cover story art or sometimes her reading news articles of what her friends have been up to in the world and reacting to it.(Mind you this was usually done side by side several other characters that the crew had become friends with.) Only for her to now possibly be teased as an important player in the current or next arc in chapter 1000+.
I can't believe the Rings Of Power producers just didn't take Peter Jackson's help. The guy is a titan of the industry and you just ghost him when he's willing to help... Intentionally throwing???

OP's longevity as well as being already a huge franchise without the influence of Hollywood has safeguarded this adaptation. Producers inevitably needed for this adaptation to do well
The creator caring about his franchise also helps. If Sapkowski wasn't such a grumpy old tart then the Witcher production could've went a lot better too.
I have seen the anime 4-5 times. The biggest problem with season 2 and season onwards is that they will be extremly cgi heavy. They will need to up the budget a lot and it will just get crazier and crazier as the story goes on. So i am very worried about that as a fan; eventually it will need a marvel budget.
I've seen Doctor Who, so I'm not too worried about the visuals. But yeah, they will have to cut some characters and nerf some abilities. The show would need numbers like The Witcher S1 or even Stranger Things to justify a budget increase.

I'm also a bit worried because Oda's mind is crazy and a lot of stuff happens lol BUT I really loved the practical effects/CGI in this season, I think gyojins looked great, the sea beast, news coo, den den mushi, gum gum /chop powers... I've seen people complain but for me it was amazing
A few camera tricks can help with certain scenes and animatronics. Little garden is going to be difficult which I’m guessing is going to need to be altered in some ways. Then there is how are they going to do Chopper. A Jim Henson style of Puppet may work best
It doesn't need to be. Chopper in kid form is EXACTLY the right size to be a practical effect. But even if they CGI, there are examples now where I could see it coming across as natural.
And if you're wonding just how good that could ever be?
Go look up Farscape. It's from the 90s, and the puppets are from Jim Henson. It's got a similar feel to one piece in that there humanity, humor and heart and of course, creatures that are practical effects but come across as believable and real. To this day, Pilot and Rygel feel REAL to me and have always managed to be something I can't quite bring myself to fathom as something someone was wearing or puppeteering.
I'm hoping for practical effects for small chopper with hopefully a body builder as man chopper. Reindeer chopper could be a CGI enhanced Reindeer, even.

I think that the most important piece of the formula of adapting material to live action is to just find the people who are fans of the source material to do the adaptation. Maybe not all of them will be perfect, but they certainly won't be garbage like rings of power, witcher etc. One piece live action wasn't perfect but it did have the heart and soul of Oda's work and that's more than enough for me to love it.

Well the Witcher did have Cavell and he was a super fan of the books and games. He tried to give his own input but they ignored him. Ultimately he left and said screw you all.
Exactly. The one thing fans loved about the witcher show was Henry Cavill and that was mostly because he was a fan and made them stick to the source and only left when they refused.

I agree with you all. When I said give the show to the fan, I meant people who have creative control over the show have to be fans. I know Cavill is a fan but unfortunately he didn't have much say in the what the script will be.
I'm sad about what happened to witcher but on the other hand, I'm very exicited about warhammer and curious to see what Cavill will do with that IP as a producer and a massive fan.

There's a weird connection between Disney not listening to Lucas and Amazon not listening to Peter Jackson... as both companies did reach out to the respective directors. Lucas even wrote Disney a whole new script for... episode 9, I think it was? to try to course correct the Star Wars brand... but Disney ignored it. And, of course, you showed that Amazon reached out to Jackson and then ducked every attempt that was made to get in contact.
I mean Oda refers to Robin and Franky as the mom and dad of the Strawhats, but it's very loose. I don't think there's anything wrong shipping the crew, but keep it to fanworks. The live action not having any shipping is a good thing :)

There are things that can be done in a live action that cannot be done in manga, vice versa. When telling certain stories it's important to analyze what about the source captures particular feelings when you experience the story.

I recommend watching the anime or reading the manga, there you can see the changes made for time restrictions like Luffy and Don Krieg's fight as well as the Buggy fight. You can also look online to avoid filler episodes but there's one is a much watch which is G-8 filler arc which is the best filler.
I was surprised G-8 was a filler. It fit in so well to what happenned in Water 7 finding out it was a filler was kind of shocking lol
What they've done masterfully, is telling the story in such a way that original OP Fans AND people that have never watched/read/heard of OP can all enjoy it to the fullest extent
I've been reading the manga for 14 years, since I was 13. I had serious, serious doubts about the live action, but now, I love this adaptation
It's fun, refreshing, it doesn't shove shit down your throat and it's nostalgic.

Also the small changes in the story that do not change the end result make it interesting even to the hardcore fans (Garp going after Luffy and sending Mihawk after him).

I am not a child or even young man. I am almost 70. I stumbled upon the live action version of One Piece. I did not know the animé version and I absolutely loved it. I have seen the animé version and have started watching it. I have seen differences but they kept true to the major aspects and did not matter to the story. I gave started watching the anime and am enjoying it

The biggest problem for rings of power was they were adapting the silmarillion without having the rights to the silmarillion. Which at that point just don't do it

Oda wasn't given TOO much control, either. He was against the idea of making Garp the arc-antagonist of the East Blue Saga, but was eventually talked into it, and it paid off in spades

It’s incredible how this has become rare. All they have to do from a writing perspective is follow the source material to the best of their ability. That’s all we want.
That Nami moment is also what I tell people is the peak of early One Piece. If you want to introduce the show to someone from now on, honestly, just tell them to watch through the Arlong arc. It's like, only 20 episodes at that point, about the same amount of runtime as the whole live action, and it perfectly captures everything about the series. It captures the sweet balance of comedy, action, and drama and is a perfect microcosm of the series.
And the live action nailed it perfectly.
As a longtime One Piece fan, it's a damn good time to be alive.

Recently I was in another conversation where somebody says “why is last of us 2 still called a good game all I ever see is people arguing over if it was amazing or sucked ass” and to me the answer was “cause it’s years later and at the drop of a hat when it comes up people remember and care enough about it to say it was amazing or sucked ass and get passionate about that.”
The moment that the producer joined the Reverie (an annual event made by One Piece CZcamsrs and watched by thousands of OP fans) is the moment I knew that this live action was made by people who have passion and respect for the series. 🥰
1. Begin by giving the audience a quick understanding of how the world works.
2. Quickly introduce the main character.
3. Have some quick conflict to allow the main character to display his traits.
4. Start introducing more characters in a way that their story naturally intertwines with the main character's.
This have been basic storytelling guidelines for centuries if not millenia. OPLA does all this perfectly in the first 10 minutes of episode 1. It's very apparent in the final product when the writers have enough respect for the wisdom handed down to them by their predecessors since the time of Gilgamesh to follow the basics.
Conversely, it is also obvious when the writers are so headstrong as to try and subvert the very basics of storytelling.
I loved the OPLA ... I am a really loyal fan since forever !! I have my nitpicks.. but one of the main reason that this LA was successful was bc the show had a lot of heart and soul of One piece .. It wasnt perfect but i could see the hard wrk the easter eggs the details the sets the castings and overall the story .. i really hope nw that s1 is successful.. i dnt want them to hav a big head and start messin it up !

The Live Action wasn't perfect, but what i loved about it is that it felt like fucking One Piece man. Everybody involved put so much effort into it and they deserve all the praise they're getting
agree with most of what you're saying. There's too many people out there trying to make everything about themselves (directors, actors, etc.) or trying to be woke or social conformists that only care about their 'image' or reputation. Disney is such an entity that has fallen far from its golden years, much like everything else that is currently Hollywood.
I feel like an even bigger problem is what these people consider being woke is. Being "woke" should not mean you want to only create a bunch of women characters that act like assholes. There is no real reason why that is the conclusion from wanting to be "woke". And I think it says a lot about the writers themselves that they actually see someone acting like an asshole as a power fantasy, like they want to be able to act like that themselves.

Oda adopts everyone's world view in the story. Some people that review One Piece weekly, affectionately call it Agenda Piece. Next season when Mr. 2 is introduced, these are the same people that are gonna have a problem with the show, like they did this season with Nojiko.

I just want to say say that I agree to all of your points and that more people should heard about your opinion. I heard about opinions of "wokism" ruining the Hollywood readaptation, and it never bodes well with me; but when you said the problem is actually about the ego it suddenly all make sense. I also applaud Oda's firmness on delivering the essence of the story but still believing in the actor the freedom to 'act' the character. And the respect of all of the production teams for the story!
These days, people seem to equate being woke with being narcissistic and egotistical. With virtue signalling for money and self insert main characters. With disrespecting the original source material because they couldn't see themselves exactly in there.
Which isn't the case.
Being woke is essentially being awake regarding the issues of the world. It's being politically aware.
Unfortunately, there are too many shoddily written TV series, movies and comics based on previously loved IPs that resulted from either egotistical and narcassistic writers that hid behind the fact that they included a black main character or sidelined the beloved male main character in favour of a female character who's personality and values were completely overhauled making them barely recognisable from who they were in the original anymore. So being woke has now become associated not with including LGBTQ+ and non white characters, but with hiding behind them to protect bad writing and disrespect towards the fans and source material.
Can imagine a Disney version when Shanks gives Luffy the Hat, Luffy tosses it over his shoulder and into the Ocean. Then starts sucking Blue Gum Gum Milk out of a Deformed Cow.

One of the reasons the One Piece adaptation was good is because the whole crew was very, very passionate. The sets, the characters, even the changes felt excellent. This is arguably the most important thing any adaptation should have; a passionate crew who, even if they don't follow the series, have at least a passion for the craft.
As someone who is not a fan of romance in shonen and any action series/movies, I totally agree with oda’s strict rule on romance. Personally, I find most shonen romance disastrous.
But one of the reason that kept me from reading one piece for so long is the fans strong hate to shippers. I was not even in the op fandom but even I know how shitty the shippers in op fandoms gets treated by other fans to the point of calling shippers weird(like you did), lack comprehension, delusional etc.. It is called fanfics and fanarts for a reason.
I still don’t understand how fans in a fandom could bully others because of their different interest. We’ve been there right? Getting shit on, weird looks because we like cartoon at 20 yrs old..
I do think get why they're like that either. Most of the one piece shippers are decent people, keep to themselves, don't force their headcanons on others, ect. They aren't hurting anyone, they're just engaging with the world and work by going "if they did have romance between crewmates, what would it be like?"
Just because i don't ship these characters, and I find the ships weird, ghat doesn't mean I get the right to go to any of the shippers and go "but oda said that these characters aren't gonna have a relationship in canon" because most of the shippers know this.
At the most, you can give new fans who are shippers, especially ones coming from fandoms where the most popular ships did end up becoming canon, a gentle heads up that the vast majority of these ships probably won't be canon so please don't be disappointed when it doesn't happen. And even then, only if they start getting waited about the potential of their ships becoming canon. Anything more than that is rude and confrontational and just scares people away. Because the vast majority of shippers understand that most of their ships won't be canon.

It's good to see that others understand the utter disrespect Disney had for the Star Wars franchise and its core characters. The fact they allow the lightsaber to be discarded and Luke's character assassinated, how little modern Hollywood understands its customers. One Piece truly is a miracle that it came out this good.

I found the TV series to be generally great fun with lovable characters/actors, amazing music, a fast pace and a colourful cheerful kind of world that still stayed very serious. I read the first 100 chapters of the manga to acquaint myself with it and while I can definitely see why some people felt that the characterizations of some characters were a bit off or some scenes could have been done on the appropriate grander scale, I do not entirely agree with them. It is a Western adaptation after all and some manga/anime things would have been just too out of place in a live action context. That being said, I would love to see the main crew be even more accurate to the manga ones, especially Nami. I feel that Sanji was done best and the others need some more work.

Anime/manga stories are not perfect by any means, but those stories are already the way they are, and if it is getting an adaptation, it's because it has a huge fanbase, and if it has a huge fanbase, it means it was successful and good enough for its audience, even with its flaws.
So yes, why you should consider some changes to adapt for a different kind of audience, you should also try to stick as much as possible to the original work which is the one who took it to the point of deserving an adaptation. Of course there are other types of changes that you will be forced to make due to budget and time constraints, as well as the ridiculous number of episodes in shows that we see nowadays.
We used to get seasons of 10-13 episodes, now we're getting seasons of 8-9 episodes, the only thing I hate is that we might eventually start to see seasons with 6 episodes. These disgusting companies are always looking for ways to reduce work and product quality and keep having the same earnings. We already started to see it with Disney and its stupid shows not worth watching with 3-6 episodes or so
I’ve been an avid one piece fan for around ten years or so, I was super skeptical hearing about the live action but was so surprised how much I enjoyed it. I’ve had friends reach out wanting to start the anime after watching it which is so exciting I feel like that’s the best part of this doing well is bringing new fans in.

I think Oda is right about the criticism coming from love bc I watched it and wasn’t like “oh this is bad” it was more like “aww they cut out one of the best scenes😢”.
To be fair, I think the only thing that the video did not bring up is that none of this is a recent thing. Starting with book adoptions which I'm always shocked of. How many people don't realize they'll a lot of their favorite quote. Original movies were actually novels Hollywood has had for decades. This egotistical opinion that they are the highest art form of imaginable and thus constantly shit on source materials when they don't have to be. A great example of one that happened recently but is about a decade old now is Michael Bay's Transformers. A lot of people don't realize that he was initially approached for Transformers because they're advertising cars and that he used to do commercial for cars and that Michael Bay originally refused to do the movie because as he called it, he didn't want to make a big dumb children's cartoon movie. When you watch these films that he directly was involved in, it completely shows because everything about it is a miserable disdainful and he's openly admitted that he only use those films to test out film technologies. He didn't give a shit about any of the characters or story or plot development or emotional arcs in those movies. Why it makes me extra mad as a Transformers fan that those original three movies sold billions of dollars and now we have movies that will not perfect are way better representations of the source material and they're not doing well because they have the stink of those original films that Michael Bay made. This is been going on forever and until Hollywood pulls its head out of its ass. We're going to still keep getting adaptions like this no matter what art form or who's agendas. They have this problem constantly.

Im actually glad that they adapted one piece this late into the anime live action adaptation game because the industry have the time and chances to learn from the previous failed or unsuccessful live action adaptation and improve upon it.
Some points i think they did well and learned:
1 - they didnt change the characters or the main story too much that it separates from the source material and make it feel like its an entirely different story.
2 - they didnt 100% adapt everything from the anime. there are things the it will not translate well to live action because it isnt realistic enough and its sometimes a good idea to remove or change those part to make it more believable, provided the over arcing main story meaning isnt changed.
3 - point 1 and 2 contradict each other but its the good balance that makes a live action good or not. tipped too much to one side and you get a bad live action adaptation.
4. Identify the KEYPOINTS of the Story and keep their impact

I don't fully agree with the romance/shipping makes you a fake fan part. Fans like to imagine little "what if scenarios" and also draw R34 that doesn't mean they don't understand the show or want to change it. Of course there are Twitter people who want the show to change in many ways but....most of them probably don't even watch or read the series.
Yeah, my main issue is when shippers are in the writers' room, or when writers run out of ideas and borrow from fan fiction. There's nothing wrong with shipping as long as it's not in the show.

Yea, god bless that Oda was supervising this directly, and his opinion is final, as season 1 change so many story sequence. The problem is the settings, the other shows are more serious and one piece is more about humor, and oda's humor is really unique 26 years ago and still going strong. Whereas in other shows, changing who beat the boss, and always appeal to sex is not having a backbone, and a full group of confused writers (I notice a lot of them just all seem british) just write the lowest hanging fruit and throw easy emotional appeal for short term story hit instead of long term vision. In my humble opinion, remove all british writers, replace it with decent writers, problem solved.

Regarding Nami: Asking for help when you can’t do it on your own anymore takes something of far greater value than courage, it takes humility. Imho there is far more strength in admitting you need help than refusing help out of a warped dedication to the protection of your own ego. Girl Boss characters are purely ego driven which is why they are so off putting(just like ego driven male characters are).
