You know what I love seeing? The entire cast and crew treating this as an honor, not an obligation. There's so much positivity surrounding this show and the joy is infectious.
Many of them were already fans.
An honor, not a platform for their own ambitions and activism. Too many actors over the last few years seem to think that being given a part on a TV show means they've been made Speaker of the Demographic.
@@honkworld9405and it shows
"No way! I get to play X character!"
Vs
"Ugh I have to wear WHAT costume for the role?!"
It's not necessary to absolutely loooove your character I'm sure, but hell if it doesn't show in the final product.
When your lead actor tears up at a compliment from the creator, you know there's real emotion in the show.
I got a little emotional myself, to be honest.
@@och70same here man
Ditto
It's probably fake. They are actors for a reason.
Personally i think an entire cast and writing staff also have to be on the same board.
The witcher is a good example of this, takes more than just an invested lead character.
The fact that he called Nami's flashback the "most messed up" one makes me wonder what he'll think about Robin's flashback 👀👀
“Most messed up so far” 😂
what about Chopper haha
OP flashbacks are one big rabbit hole
Brooke flashback. 💀
Shhh!
I absolutely love this show. It felt like therapy after all the crap we’ve endured.
That's an excellent way to put it
That's exactly the premise of escapist fiction... Go figure the industry most associated with escapism, especially in times of geopolitical/socioeconomic crises, would forget the entire concept.
After all the shite that Hollywood trots out, One Piece is breath of fresh air!
They cant blame us for thinking this series would be terrble but they Shockley didn't fuck it up.
Thats exactly how I felt watching the entire show!
Gary going from not interested in OP, to expecting the worst from Netflix, to loving it, is truly an arc worth of the best animes.
And proof that most of us are willing to admit when we were wrong, and lavish praise and appreciation on an adaptation that was handled in the same way.
I agree. I've never watched any One Piece, I think that style of anime/manga is stupid (just my personal preferences and opinion - I also think Harry Potter is dumb).
However, my fiance got me to watch this with her as soon as it came out.
We binged it over a couple of days.
It's freaking awesome. I was very pleasantly surprised. My experience is pretty much identical to Gary's journey on this.
Bravo to the showrunners, director, writers, and cast. Well done.
All in 30 less episodes that an anime would take to tell the same story
I knew nothing about One Piece except that there's a lifetime's worth of source material and anyone would need to make it a full time job to get caught up on it today. I didn't even know it was a pirate adventure story, really, though I'm vaguely certain I had heard that it was, once long ago, and forgot.
Hearing Gary talk about it on a recent Open Bar with Drinker and MauLer, I got very interested. Not that Gary's recommendations hold a huge amount of weight with me, nor anyone else's, but just his enthusiasm for the show came through particularly strongly and that got my attention. And he talked a bit about it not being a bunch of girlbosses. Then MauLer said that the story structure was "normal", and the characters motivations were clear, and that it just had really ordinary, normal, non-subversive writing. Wow, have I wanted that again.
So I gave it a shot, going in blind, and Gary is completely right about this. MauLer too (though he didn't give quite as strong a recommendation as Gary). This is fun entertainment, that doesn't try to do anything but be entertaining and leave you happy and satisfied. There's no agendas in it, it's *normal*. The stories just make sense. It's genuine, you can't help but like the characters. Even the villains are quite charismatic.
I was never a Brony, but I remember when MLP:FIM was going on, there were a lot of people talking about why all these random adults, and a lot of adult men, were interested in this little cartoon show for young girls. And the explanation that made the most sense to me was that it was part of the New Sincerity movement. Basically, a reaction to the postmodern, cynical garbage being shoved down everyone's throats everywhere else in culture. People want stories that are familiar in structure, featuring characters that are good and honest and trying to do the right thing, with approachable and colorful aesthetics, and a positive moral message. That's it. Nothing more deeper or complicated than that. People want stuff that looks good, feels good and aspirational, and makes them happy as they go about their lives. While most of Hollywood is trying to push depressing grays and deconstructions of every hero and villain until you can't tell the two apart.
One Piece seems to fit in perfectly with that New Sincerity movement. To be unashamedly in pursuit of one's dreams, and to help one's friends to achieve theirs as well, that's awesome. This show won me over almost immediately by how seriously it took itself, and how colorful and lively it was. The situations are ridiculous, the world is bizarre, but who cares because it's fun and it has a positive, optimistic outlook. And I am so hungry for stories like that again, from when I was young and not so cynical myself, and Hollywood still put out optimistic and normal stories. More of this please.
I feel sorry for him though because as open minded as he is, he's still not ready for the hard sells of the anime fans in his audience for other works. It broke Sargon.
For the first time that I can remember, the way the actors conducted themselves has actually convinced me to watch this. They are humble and actually look like they are actually enthusiastic about creating something for the fans.
It's a damn shame that this is so rare.
Right. I'm late to this show and didn't read the video title so I thought the intro was gonna be another actor or writer talking about how they hate the show or want to make changes. I was literally shocked. That's what modern Hollywood has done to us.
Might just be because they actually are fans themselves. I mean the guy playing Luffy nearly breaks out in tears at the beginning when he talks to Oda. 0:36
Same thing here. Only reason why I even gave the show a chance was because of the promotional material with the actors. The one with Oda and Luffy's actor was one of the highlights for me. Not to mention that the female actors were not spouting feminist talking points with each breath, which is incredibly rare nowadays.
They all looked like they had a good time with the production and were humble by wanting to represent the source material in an authentic manner. As a long time reader of One Piece, this really helped put my mind at ease before watching it.
very good point. ever since that, was it 2016 Ghostbusters. i have grown very tired of obnoxious celebrities lashing out at audiences and preaching their agendas ininterviews.
I’ve literally tried to watch the anime so many times but couldn’t get into it. I watched the Netflix version and I loved it I’ve been watching the anime non stop since 😂
I also love the lore that Sanji's "Black Leg" fighting style was inherited from Zeff. The idea was that Zeff only used his hands for cooking, not fighting. Hence his nickname "Red Leg". Because all the blood of his enemies would end up there. So not only did he sacrificed his main mode of attack to save young Sanji, but he even taught him how to use his techniques to make sure he can hold his own against anyone.
I never thought of that. Like the impact when jax girl got her hand slammed in a car door when she was a baby heart surgeon in Sons of Anarchy. I can see them doing something with that, using his hands in a fight when he doesn't have a choice and fucking up his cooking - his passion and purpose. (Also was done well in the first Dr strange movie)
Oh damn I knew about him saving his hands because he's a cook but I never thought of the impact of him eating his leg besides his grotesque it is. You're absolutely right, he sacrificed his future as a cook pirate right there. He will never be able to fight again without sacrificing his hands aka cooking. Goodness gracious
@@ot7biasedmashups But again, Zeff did make sure another kick-fighting chef would take his place and live long enough to see the All Blue, that being Sanji.
In a way, Zeff is what Garp wanted to be for Luffy. The only difference is that Garp tore Luffy's dream down every chance he gets (mostly because it's not in-line with his principles). But Zeff was lucky enough to meet someone just like him. And he did it all to keep Sanji's dream alive. Even at the cost of his own. I knew my father would do the same, rest his soul. Speaks volumes on what a good father figure can do.
And also he was the one who taught Sanji the code of man honor.
@@superspies32I agree with this but I think it also was compounded with his compassion that he got from Sora.
😮Could not believe the Luffy actor is only 19. He has this charisma and gravitas way beyond his years.
They found a gem for sure.
Someone said that he reminds them of the energy & charisma of a younger Tom Holland and i can't help but agree.
And coincidentally, Current Luffy after Time Skip is also 19
He was 17-18 when he does the show
Right? I was like "when we see Luffy, it brings happiness. By just him smiling. Who are they gonna bring to live action who can do that?"
And mf, did they surprise me.
Just goes to show what even a relatively new or inexperienced actor is capable with good material and good direction.
I love that Nami's big moment, despite being arguably the most competent of the Straw Hats, is when she dares to ask for help. Refreshing in the age of "I don't need anybody because I'm already perfect" female characters.
Feminists are gonna have a field day.
@@liamphibiaplease you know global noise pollution has been on the up since they heard that line.
@@liamphibia you don't know the half of it, look up what happens to Alvida in the follow up chapters, Twitter is gonna lose their shit
To be fair that scene was written about 22 years ago and is one of the most iconic scenes in anime/manga history. It is up there with "I want to live", and "nothing happened". The show changed a few very important lines and dropped a few important characters but overall was a good adaptation. Best adaptation done to date.
This is something you say when all you watch is Disney+ and Marvel dreck.
Garp is absolutely a positive male mentor. We just haven't reached the point in the story that really shows how much he cares for Luffy yet.
He's a positive male mentor to koby but definitely not luffy lol.

@@y.f8139, oh, yeah... Marineford flashbacks.

Leaving your grandson alone in the Jungle or in the care of some mountain bandits is hardly my definition of being a positive mentor. But he cares about Ace and Luffy in his own way as shown in Marinefort and I like his character the way he is. His last appearance in the manga was quite something tho...
Those flashbacks where Garp throws Luffy in a pit, jungle at night, etc.... "iiiyyaaahhhh" 😂
Seeing Inaki smiles MAKES me smile, and no one could do Luffy better. I am so proud of him!
What I love most about Inaki's interpretation of the character is that despite the live action version having to tone a few things down, Inaki as Luffy embodies the spirit of the anime/ manga.
Inaki would make a perfect Mugen for a samurai Champloo live action
@@Edwin.Serrano that would be another anime that could easily be adapted into live action.
@joeyzapata6786 there is a fan made film on CZcams named "Afro samurai champloo" and it's a masterpiece, I hope one day we can see something like that in live action
@@joeyzapata6786as long as they get another showrunner like OPLA’s matt owens, who’s already a superfan of one piece before being the showrunner (he has old pictures on his instagram going to anime conventions hunting down one piece figurines lol) and respects the material so much like the rest of us. it also helps that there’s a huge amount of one piece fans in the cast (emily rudd & mackenyu) and the crew. i love samurai champloo so much, and if they get to make a live action adaptation i hope they put in the same amount of love and care in the IP as much as the team behind OPLA.
I have never seen a performance so camp and yet so awe-inspiring as the bloke who played Mihawk. Not sure how they got that so spot on. Either the director or the actor or both are a genius.
Mihawk and buggy stole the show
I really liked what they did with Buggy in the show. He was a great addition and slight change to the story. Mihawk’s actor is probably also a fan of the show like everyone else which was how he knocked it out of the park.

@@kcguardianthe "I want to live" moment
Exactly! That is the core of One Piece, you can't describe it without it sounding kinda dumb. I'm a science minded so it really didn't sound like my kind of story. My friends had such a hard time getting me to watch it. Well now 10+ years later, it's my favorite story ever. It's a masterpiece of character, worldbuilding, and tragedy.
The world is insane and goofy but it's consistently insane and goofy so even people like me can get wrapped up in it.
I think the live action only covers maybe 60-70% of the emotion, but that's still enough to make it stand out as an all time great.

That intro with Luffy is so refreshing!! An actor who is grateful and happy about playing such a positive character. We haven't seen that from Hollywood in a long time. The greatest thing about this show is that it's not your usual jaded, cynical, nihilistic crap. This show is unabashedly whimsical and good at heart. It's what the world needs more of.
Thier is dark moments in One Piece but it is all about hope freedom and choosing your own path and following your dreams.

I lost my grandpa (Who was like a father to me 3 years ago, he raised me since I was 5) in a car accident. We had the sort of relationship like Sanji and Zeff. He was tough on the exterior but cared very much about me on the interior. Even going to the length of providing for me when he himself didn't have enough to eat at some points. I don't remember the last time I cried as much as I did on the Sanji and Zeff goodbye scene. It literally broke me.
My condolences to you. I lost my father last year and the scene when Sanji and Zeff are saying goodbye to each other brought me to tears as well. My father was a chef when I was much younger

From the many father scenes in this series, one was very striking to me. Where Zeff has eaten his own limb,so that a little boy who is not even his child, can live, that was so so touching the way they brought it in this adaptation. So many Good father figures is something I missed seeing on screen. I had a good dad,may he rest in peace... I watch One Piece and miss him alot.
My pops also passed away last year, and I really can relate to your comment, thanks
Yes and when sanji was saying his goodbyes in the show he came off as and arrogant ungrateful hypocrite. Such great writing, he didn't even say goodbye to anyone else he spent years with, cause that's not cheesy writing with tons of holes if ever I saw one.
I love all mistakes are ignored in this show by the fans.
There are serious blinders on people when it comes to this average show
Lost my father due to heart attack 2019 Oct 3rd... That scene alone made me cried.. sorry for the lost brother., MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE
That's what truly missing from DIsney and the MCU. Concentrating soley on women in a series/genre where the CORE CONSUMERS and PRIMARY DEMOGRAPHIC are men between the ages of 10 and 49 doesn't make logical sense. Strong men, strong connection. It's important to reflect that.
Belmere (Nami's stepmother) is also a wonderful mother figure. And it's being called back by Nami many many chapters later.
Nami is a real girl boss. She takes care of the finances. She is the only one who can get all the guys to follow her logic when it is needed (even Luffy). She isn't trying to run things becuase she isn't the Captain.. she knows her place and still runs the crew when needed. She doesn't try to be a guy or not need the guys. That is better than any of the ide girl bosses they make.
She really is the brains of the operation for a large stretch of the story. Without her, the boys wouldn't be able to handle the ship or the day-to-day operations, and she prevents them from doing stupid things when they are hot-headed.
Agreed, same with the second female set to join the straw hats. She knows she isn't the captain and also kinda is mad at Luffy for not letting her unalive herself. She has knowledge that maybe only herself has left in the entire world and is basically "mom" to the crew. Oda can write strong women characters without slamming your face in it.
And despite being slow to trust and strong in her own right, she knew when she couldn't hope to win against Arlong and his men and when to humbly ask for help
Agreed. I’m actually surprised that they didn’t pull a bait and switch on us and make the show about Nami. And they didn’t have her complaining about the evils of the patriarchy or how hard it is to be a woman every five minutes.
@@Kayoss13212 there was no way Oda would have okayed that. He knows his audience and rarely goes with trends 8n his main story.
Inaki thanking Oda Sensei personally, respecting the creator of the IP, this shows that the show has promise and a future.
You are 100% right, respecting the source material is part of why this show was so good. The other was the fact they only used CG for impossible effects like the rubber, Buggy, etc.
They built almost all of the ships and sets in the show. And it just makes everything more believable. Seeing a real Going Merry just draws you into the world.

eeeee, Usopp represents African countries in canon. it was literally stated by Oda. You can say he's mixed, because of his mother, but that doesn't change that he would be african in our world. Luffy f.e. would be brazilian (so mexic is close enough). If someone is a bit tan in manga, it usually means he's black. That's just a stylistic choice, so really no race swaps. Seeing how enthusiastic and honored the cast are to be portraying these characters is just as good as the show itself.
Their chemistry together is off the *charts.* I can't wait to see them again in season 2. 😃
They seem to have really worked hard to get the casting right. I wouldn't be surprised if in the auditions they put them all together to see who had chemistry and picked the best group even if there might have been better individual actors (not saying the acting was bad, quite the opposite) in each part. That's something Hollywood used to do, and fell out of favor with studios going for name recognition above all else.
It's just such a wholesome difference to those self absorbed, activist assholes like Zeigler and co.
@@fakecubed oda himself casted the straw hats
My wife and I watched this on a lark..."lol another Netflix Anime adaptation?! Let's see how bad it is!" Having absolutely no background on One Piece we came away feeling...overjoyed at how GOOD the show is! You could tell just how much the cast was invested and loved what they were doing. This is incredible and could be one of the best things ever created for Television.
So, after enjoying it so much, I decided to go online and find out what "real" fans thought of it, thinking that perhaps we only enjoyed it because we didn't know the lore...lo and behold, nearly everyone saying that it was faithful to the original content and they were loving it, too! I can't express how happy that made me, knowing so many real fans out there were happy with this live action! It also made me a bit sad, knowing the franchises I truly loved as a 'real' fan were butchered by Netflix (Witcher, Cowboy Bebop, etc.) and I lamented what could have been.
I truly, TRULY hope that Hollywood and Netflix and all studios see this and pay attention and start treating IP's with as much love and care as was done with One Piece.
Love,
Two brand new OnePiece superfans.
Trust me when I say this, what you just watched in the live action is just the prologue of the series. After this, the series gets even crazier, with more characters, more locations, more history, more villains, & if you thought some of the backstories in this were sad, you haven’t seen anything yet!
Hell, the crew you meet in this series? This is only half of them, & the other half are just as crazy & lovable.
I hear you in the butchering. I am not a Witcher fan (I still need play Wildhunt) but watching Henry Cavill get betrayed by the writers and producers saddened me. Being a major fan of One Piece since the early 2000's, I was very worried about this adaptation. But now I can say it has become yet another version of one of my favorite stories that I can enjoy with the manga and anime.
Welcome aboard! One Piece is genuinely my favorite franchise after years of refusing to watch anime at all. It took me til about Arlong Park to really get invested, but then what we get next with Alabasta drew me in completely. Every arc after that hooked me more and more, especially Enies Lobby since Robin and I are like the same person, so I hope you keep enjoying it like I did
@joncoutts1671 To new One Piece fans from a decades old fan, I’m glad you enjoyed this story, it is very deeply beloved by millions of people around the world. And I truly wish I could have had the same experience with The Witcher as you did with One Piece.
thats how i felt after watching first 3 seasons of the walking dead... i am not saying i want one piece the live action to fail but i am not optimistic to be totally honest.
Genuinely hope this adaptation receives some awards. SO happy for the team and Oda. 🥰
22:28 I keep thinking about the scene of Nami asking Luffy for help.
Oda really didn't hold back in his writing. Throughout the season we had been introduced to this strong female character, only to find out that beneath the surface she was barely holding together. For years she had been carrying the burden of trying to save her loved-ones by first being enslaved and working herself to the ground, then stealing and betraying everyone she met, making her unable to form any real friendships. Then she finds out that it was all for nothing and there was never any hope to begin with. She is broken mentally and even starts stabbing herself in her desperation and lashes out against Luffy when he tries to stop her. Her last resolve was to at least ensure the Strawhats wouldn't be dragged down with her, but Luffy sees right through her. Then as she hits rock-bottom she can finally be true to herself: "Luffy, help me!"
Luffy doesn't answer right away, but instead places his hat on her head. The hat, which we have learned, is his greatest treasure and represents his dream of becoming the king of the pirates.
"Of course I will."
From now on I will be much more invested in both Luffy and Nami as characters and this scene of Nami showing weakness has in fact strengthened both of them! Hollywood writers need to look at this and take note of how to write compelling characters. After seeing them broken down, it is much more satisfying when we see them overcome their past weakness - simple but effective.
Wait till you see their other female member then. Not to mention it's where most jumped in the hype.
Amen. Let us continue to spread the gospel of good writing. 😎👍
I first watched this scene in the anime in 2006, and to this day it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
Amazing display of friendship.
To be fair.... you also have to realize One Piece is also almost 30 years old.... So yah.... no shit it's got good writing. Now yah you'll still get really good anime and manga that are made today. But the stuff of the 80s 90s and 00s just hit different.
That was a great scene. All the other guys getting ready to help her, very male chivalry.

Needless to say, I've fully caught up with the anime (taking the manga slowly) and it has begun to contest my favorite animes of all time. Such an inspirational; nearly perfect story.
Literally the exact same thing for me. I watched like a hundred episodes about. 7 years or so ago, and was like eh on it. Then seeing the hype for the live action got me back into the anime, and watched it up through the beginning Thriller Bark, where I then picked up manga, and am now caught up reading weekly. Although, when I did catch up it was the first chapter of the Kuma flashback so it was literal despair for those first 7 or so chapters I read caught up. 😂
I mean, look at how lovely the cast is. Dedicated, talented, and just good people who respect the creative process, and care about what they're doing.
Now look at that chick who starred in that Disney Snow White remake.
When he played that “Weird! Weird!” clip my nerves went up in flames. She’s the worst 😅
This felt like a highly produced documentary or short film more than a review but still achieved the same result while providing more entertainment then one would think it had any right too.
Congrats Gary and Garret and team, you managed to do what the show did.... just in a review. Bravo~

Just watched again...... and I still feel the same way.
Please anime jebus~ let season 2 be good.
The Nami scene made me legit tear up - You guys better be prepared for more moments like that, there will be another one likely in season 3
You think they're skipping skypiea or somethin?
@@SJNaka101 Jaya, Skypiea, Water 7 and Enies Lobby could all be a part of one season if they have enough episodes

@SJNaka101 I think Grand line and Croc is next, right? and then water 7 and rescuing their friend after that- I don't think skypeia will be essential for this version of one piece

How can a review hit the feels so well? I'm glad One Piece wasn't just not sacrificed to modern Hollywood, but came out strong.
Watching this with my sons I shed a tear when it is revealed that Zeff ate his own leg so that Sanji could eat real good. My kids didn't understand that part but I did. And my father having passed last year, Sanjis farewell to Zeff got me right in the feels.
I'm glad I kept watching this cause at first I thought I was going to hate it. Seemed super goofy and annoying at first, but there was this sincerity to the goofiness that was strangely endearing.
Glad I watched it through and hope they can keep the momentum going because it's great fun and something I can enjoy watching with my young sons that they can remember the way I remember watching Indiana Jones and Back to the Future with my dad.
You nailed it there’s an endearing quality to this goofy show one piece lowers your Guard with those goofy designs if you seen the manga you’d understand more 😂 glad people are giving it a chance
Well if they stick with the source material, season 2 should be even better. Escalation of this story is one major reason for its success.
loved your comment
Man I never even watched one piece, but seeing how much fun the crew is having, the absolute love and respect they hold to the author. Man it's so wholesome I want to cry 😭
Watch it bro you will not regret. It's just a emotional journey ❤
Man, Luffy is so wholesome. I can just see him smile and my day is better.
It’s so nice seeing Nerdrotic talk about a great show that deserves the praise. I still love his videos about talking down towards not so good shows, but still nice of him to talk so positively.
Seeing the live action, having gone through the first 90 or so episodes years ago before stopping, it made really get invested back into the series. I’m now nearly 830 chapters into the manga after having switched over from the anime after Enies. One of the best works of fiction I’ve ever read.
And PS, after having just gotten to Whole Cake Island, and seeing some of the criticism towards how Shanks is portrayed in the live action, all I can say is I think it’s pretty much spot on. That’s really how he is in early OP
Wow! That’s massive. The show made me feel very happy.
One Piece is pure, unadulterated, escapism joy. So happy to hear it's coming back for at least another season, but hoping for much, much more. (And as someone who also lost their Pops, that Zeff goodbye scene absolutely hit me in the feels.)
Very sorry for your loss...
As a one piece fan for 15 years im so happy they did the show justice and they are bringing new people to the story. It only gets tougher to adapt from here and i truly hope they can pull it off.
Agreed
Can you imagine if Zegler had talked about the original Snow White the same way this kid talked about One Piece? What a huge difference that would have made in the conversations surrounding that doomed remake.
America will literally grieving over their "progressive" genre loses out to the "anime"
I didn’t think anyone knew how to make TV like this anymore, this is the classic cartoon world where all the physics are turned around. I always love good world building. I haven’t seen such great character development in sooo long. Giving the origin story of each character was so well done, you just had to be engaged. Hey, my wife and I call him Zoro too. That first name is a tongue twister.
I turned to my wife and said damn good dialogue when the girl boss told Zoro how nature will favor him, no matter how much she trains. I bet that sent thousand blue hair Karen’s to the ER over that, but it was so brilliantly written, my jaw hung the floor. All of the dialogue is expertly written. Some of the best I’ve heard in a long time.
I really hope they don’t ruin this great show, going for the Grand Line alone seems exciting. My wife loved this show. She literally laughed and cried and was engaged throughout the entire season. She was literally brought to tears several times and she’s not one to go to tears as quickly as most women.
Wednesday was also, pretty good. Not as good as One Piece, but at least it was watchable and better than everything being made today. So far, the writers of Cobra Kai haven’t ruined that property. Who would have thought the writers could go six season based off of a 1980s movie? I thought the last season of Cobra Kai was the best except for the first season. Since it’s hard for any show to have one of it’s best season in the fifth season, they did a good job. Bringing Chozen back was brilliant. His character was great.
My wife and I both felt that the fight choreography in One Piece was the best we’ e seen in a long time, certainly millions of times better than Rey and Kylo’s fight with Snoke’s Imperial Guards… by a mile. She really loved the character of Dracule Mihawk, who is very awesome. Not just his crazy sword skills, but his attitude is unlike most badass heavies in movies today.
He has an air of class about him and fairness. It’s a great show and if you’ve been looking for something good to watch on streaming, watched Once pIece and you won’t regret it.
No matter how weird and silly it seems, it will grab your heart and not let go. This is how characters should be developed and interact with one another. What a great show, especially considering what else there is to watch. There is not a weak character in the cast, seriously.
I'll give you good news Oda is an excellent guard dog with great investment in letting these directors adapt his work with some guidance and full effort to keeping execs from getting involved
actually in japan the last name is said forst then the first name second. Luffy is his first name. Monkey is his last name. So in america is luffy monkey. But in japan its monkey luffy. Dont worry about the D. forget it exist for awhile lmao. And zoros name is Roranoa Zoro. In America it would be Zoro roronoa. But again in japane its switched.
one piece follows the japanese method of naming, which is surname first followed by the first name. roronoa is his surname! his first name is zoro, so you’re good :-)

Great review though Gary, happy to see this show covered so positively.
It’s wild especially about boys vs girls when it came to zoro and kuina . In the anime a few months ago , zoro at his current peak power faced a opponent who kept saying he is a genetic superior to zoro. Zoro told him “that’s the kind of excuse I hate the most” it is a subtle call back to kuina . Zoro beat him . Proving to kuina even now that there is no disadvantage that can’t be overcome. Kuina , had she lived could have possibly been just as strong especially when there a few strong women in one piece even in the top 4 tier
True, but that being said One Piece does not follow real world logic. If you have a frail and weaker body, you can train your Haki (The one piece version of aura, ki, chakra, etc...) and use it to make yourself faster/stronger. Is what Shanks used to drive away the sea monster btw. And Zoro has one of the highest levels of Haki in the series, so even opponents physically stronger (not many, but they exist) can be beaten. As a bonus, imbuing yourself in haki makes it possible to nullify the devil fruit users invulnerability, meaning even a guy that can turn into smoke can be wounded by a haki user.
@@Ch4os4ever that’s not the point I’m making. Btw I know this info I’m on the kuma trauma train 😭.
What I mean is that kuina could have definitely been a very powerful character and that her thoughts on genetics and gender limitations, at least in one piece, are wrong and just excuses. Zoro facing King a genetic superior to him , fighting in wano the homeland of their ancestors was a nice bow to that original story
@@Kyubii01sorry for coming late. But this was proved when tashigi (the quina look-alike) fought against zoro and lost even though she’s a great swordswoman but still proves that if both had trained equally the boys will be stronger eventually (but in zoro’s case his training is OP 🫠)
Edit: on kuma punching right now 😂😂
The only thing that made me hold off watching one piece is how long it is. Watching the live action felt so right that I immediately started watching the anime, and I'm around episode 300 now and smashing along. Even at 41 years old, this show hit me just right. Been watching anime since the late 80s and I'll never stop. I only got more hard-core with age lol
hahaha im so glad you are still heading strong happy 41 yrs old.. for me almost 2 decades go what held me back was the animation.. there are many anime on top just because of fancy fights and animation.. one piece has always stayed at the top and whilst other pears fell from grace it only got better with each arc. the instant thought most have when trying to watch is well im gonna have to use so much time to wacht and stuff but when you just watch it for what it is and if you enjoy a good story, side characters, world building , backstories etc good writing you see it has alot of soul and the number of episodes become a issue not because they are long but instead they feel short.. im on my 8th run of anime and manga not aday goes by sinds i first started that i dont watch it.. and if im not watching it im watching theory videos etc, play it on videogames. i only hoop we can all reach the end one piece deserves to end on a very high note.. great to have you onboard Dozer-san you are our NAKAMA ! I absolutely LOVE Garp, Zeff, and Shanks. All remind me of my dad. And I can’t help but break down every time I see the goodbye scene.
Would you believe me if I said that in the manga it's even WORSE? One of my absolute favourite scenes in the East Blue saga.
I can tell from how you talked about this that we’d disagree on a lot, which is why you liking this show for the reasons you did is so refreshing. You said you’re a One Piece novice, so I’ll let you know that what you like about it goes straight back to Oda and the manga…which I think you’d like even more. You think Sanji’s backstory is great now? (It is, but oh boy does it go even harder later)
There are three big things that I think really made this work. First, and most impactful, Oda sat over this show like a goalie, keeping it true to his story. Second, so many of the people working on it are huge fans of the story they’re telling. Last, whatever could be done with practical effects was. They built the ships. Zoro and Sanji can actually fight. They ground the show in reality, and that let them be believably fantastical.
I needed more when we got done, so I read the manga 😅 my partner started a rewatch of the anime. I’m watching the live action for a third time with our kid. I’m really glad it broke the live action curse
The live action had me re watch Along Park Arch in the anime again after 5yrs, man watching Nami break down begging for help really hits so hard for an animated show, really remembered why I liked the show so much 900 episodes later.

I genuinely love seeing the enthusiasm of the actor to play this role. What a treat, and it shows in his performance.
Man, if Nerdrotic likes what we have now, then he ain't seen nothing yet. So much character development.
He is going to stop seeing american shows😂
My only concern is how certain commentators will react to characters like Ivan and Bon Clay. Hopefully they are executed well enough that the politics can be looked past.
Which the show completely butchered for Usopp, in live action he is already the character he would become over the story just without the powers, but where was the whimpy, lying to save his ass, emotionally wrecked Usopp?

@@Ajbajnificent And what's even better, the moment was written as such all the way back in 1997.
Another aspect I absolutely love about the One Piece Live Action is how they used the wanted posters to depict scale. The big glowing bounty numbers literally in-your-face telling you how dangerous certain enemies are. When the crew struggles with $15M Buggy, then $16M Kuro shows up, you immediately get a sense of his threat level before any fighting has even happened. The payoff of this is Mihawk being noticeably (BOUNTY CANCELLED) just before he cuts a ship in half. For new viewers, this becomes a "how big is that jump? $30M? $300M?" Finally, Mihawk toying with Zoro without breaking a sweat sets a gut-wrenching realization that these $15-20M bounties are child's play in the broader world. This is the kiddie's wading pool that Luffy and the Strawhats are currently in. ((Season 2 spoilers below))
Season 1 hasn't even finished the _prologue_ yet. The East Blue saga isn't even Chapter 1 - it's the setup _before_ Chapter 1 can even start proper. The Grand Line map isn't pointing them to the final destination. It's pointing them to the STARTING LINE.
and another spoiler:
.
.
.
.
.
.
Laughtale IS NOT on that map. It was hypothesized and found by Oden and at the time of ep1 he was already dead.
@@superspies32 My theory regarding your spoiler:
My guess is Laughtale is just the backside of Reverse Mountain and therefore technically _is_ on the map, but not how people expect. If you think about it, that's where the "furthest destination" along the Grand Line/New World would be (because that's how circles work).
Also, the Red Line and Grand Line form a convenient X on the planet marking the spot (knowing that they are at 45 degree angles, and not the equator/prime meridian respectively).
Also also, it would make sense that all of the "destination" dreams on the Straw Hat crew take them back to Reverse Mountain: It's technically the point where all four oceans meet (a.k.a. All Blue), it's where Laboon is waiting, and if it's also where Laughtale is, then it would be the perfect "laughing tale" to cap off the journey.
It's also the furthest point on the planet from the seat of the World Government (on the other intersection of RL/GL, on the opposite side of the planet), so it would make thematic sense that that's where the seed of "freedom" waits.
The key component was Oda. I cannot stress this fact enough. Giving him control over the cast and show means that it stayed true to its roots. One piece is such an amazing manga/anime, you really needed the mind behind it calling the shots to accurately bring it across to both old time fans and new audiences.
This doesnt always work though. Often it actually hinders the show. If Oda had insister on a 1-1 reaction of the manga it would have failed. Not all writers make for good showrunners.
Case and point is JK Rowling. Her involvement in movies is very hit and miss.
@@trequor not sure what you mean. The potter books and movies were all pretty good. I don't know her involvement in the movies though.
@@YukoValis Meh they were alright, some better than others. She became less involved as the series progressed, leading to some weird choices (like ditching the school uniforms) and some poorer entries (Goblet of Fire and Half-blood Prince are kinda bad).
On the flip side, she had tons of creative control over the Fantastic Beasts movies and those are also not great. My point is that creator control isnt any guarantee of quality.
hats off for the AWESOME EDITING on this video, you left a lot of one piece youtubers eating dust in regards to overall quality
I love the Nami scene where she asks Luffy for help because it's the first time in a long time where she had agency, and Luffy knew that. It's a much slower burn in the anime because a lot more happens, but it drives home that Luffy might be dumb, but he's not stupid, and he's always been a really inspiring character just based on that single aspect of his personality.
Yes. I LOVE the fact Nami is presented as an Evil characters, but in reality she is a good woman that decide be the scapegoat to save every body. The sweetest redemption arc ever.
Although it's a very understood plotline and character trait for luffy i still see many people miss this. When they reach the town, luffy already knew nami was a good person and therefore had good reasons to hide stuff from them, one of the first things he does is asking her if she needs help. He won't intervene with things because he trusts nami and will wait for her to be ready to ask for his help. He's very smart and understanding of people, he has 0 patience to bullcrap, his crew and friends are everything to him.
@@DPedroBoh Right on, same as when he saves robin, or how chopper join his crew, or soge king arc or any other of his crews, Luffy never impose his will into others, he simply make a room for others to join him with his action.

What a difference it makes when the cast truly loves the piece of media and when the creator's stick to the source material. I Adore this show❤ it got me into Watching the anime
OK, as a huge fan of the manga and anime, I loved, absolutely adored, this adaptation. But one thing I loved just as much was you closing the video with a snippet of Bink's Sake. When you watch the anime you'll get to a certain character that will turn this from just a song snippet to something that will hit you in the emotions. Can't recommend enough.
Oh my sweet summer child. Garp is one hell of a guy and probably one of my favourite characters in one piece. He loves his grandson more than you can imagine but his duty always comes first.
I'm giddy in anticipation for the next season. Chopper is going to make Grogu look like a happy meal toy from a merchandising standpoint and Bon Clay is going to DDOS the culture war on both fronts as one of the most beloved characters in the series pirouettes his way through.
Un... deux... trois.
You think they'll get all the way to Mr 0 in S2? It makes sense but hat's a ton of ground to cover.
I just don't want all these newcomers to scream Netflix made One Piece woke when Bon Clay has been a fan favorite for more than two decades. He is an amazing character, but some people are so on lookout for "woke stuff", they won't believe he is loved for his character and not some agenda.
@@helck1153 I honestly can't wait for that, because it shows that most are just hypocritical idiots jumping on every outrage train just to "show it" to the left.
Let's be real Oda was inclusive and "woke" befor that thought even crossed the mind of most who are so deeply involved nowadays.
And as long as they don't cut his parts of the story to the extent that all the "But, we are friends, so ofc we help" and the sacrifice after he realized everything, people will love him.
The characterization in One Piece is top notch and if the showrunners manage to convey the story and characters as they are written in the manga it will be one of the best shows ever
I don't watch the anime nor read the manga but I was bored beyond boredom so I gave the show a shot. I didn't have expectations, really. Enjoyed it from start to finish. It was refreshing and more than welcomed after all the trash available out there.
The cast was amazingly adorable and on point.
Kuro had gloves with blades and i love that they kept (ofc they did under Oda's watchful eyes) the way he pushed up his glasses, which he did even without the gloves on out of habit of not to cut himself.
Always liked One Piece, because from the start you knew that there is an ending with a goal, which is kinda rare in mangas.
Gary telling us at the end he will watch the anime and read the manga fills me with joy. It's even better than the live action
And unlike the live action, they didn't have to race swap.
I heard the manga is better, but i dropped the anime around the dress rosa arc.
It was just way too much filler stuff and the whole concept of the show is always the same.
Arrive at new location, introduce new bad guy and crew, something sad happens, they all must overcome something and in the end Luffy beats the bad guy and his crew beats the captains.
It got old pretty fast, so i prefer something like Hunter x Hunter over it.

One Piece is the best show made in almost 20 years. I haven't seen a TV show this good since Enterprise went off the air in 2005.
I think the REAL reason One Piece live action is SO FUCKING AMAZING is because Oda-sensei would have told Netflix to KICK ROCKS if they EVEN THOUGHT about doing it wrong. He would NOT STAND for ANYONE screwing up his life's work. So I think we have HIM to thank, and NOT Netflix or any studio. We should be thanking him and the cast for creating THE PERFECT live action anime adaptation to have EVER BEEN MADE.
This is the "DEI" the Hollywood should aim for instead of all the BS we see on Marvel and Disney shows these days.

Zoro: "Why's the waiter here?" Usopp: "Because we can't boil water." Awesome crew of actors. It's still a blast watching it.
@@nainshimpykh why are you spoiling them
@nainshimpykh you're very rude delete this
How grateful the actors are to be in the show, and to make it authentic to the source material, is SO refreshing. Seeing their interviews is exactly why I watched it and why i stuck around, and what a pleasant surprise. Such an incredibly fun show
everyone in this show are dedicated fans from the producers to the actors. Nami's actor emily spent 3 yes THREE years trying to get that role, even dying her hair the same color. that's dedication to get a role you want for a show you love. Also as another youtuber noted. this show does something that only the expanse pulled off. Diverse casting done right. Each of the characters is different, rather than doing the usual hollywood pandering to the viewers who would be mostly one ethnicity. One Piece dared to be different they went and found the right people for the role. ie Zoro is of japanese descent (Oda's comment) nami is caucasian, Sanji is russian/mid european that sort of thing. so they weren't afraid to mix it up. there were some changes, ie Nami's mother in the anime/manga she is white but in the live action she is african american i believe. Oda seems fine with this change and it wouldn't have been to pander to some agenda, more likely she is a damn good actress who won the role through skill rather than politics. in fact so many of the actors even the bit ones seemed to be having so much fun it looked more a labour of love for them rather than just 'another acting job'. good example is helmo in his room playing with the swords. (my eyes they burn arrggh) but damn that was funny and the actor didn't look awkward, in fact he looked like he was enjoying himself. its this magic that brought the show to life. when the people making it believe and the actors believe magic happens. sadly to many shows now are just paychecks for actors who turn up put in a wooden performance and leave. In fact i gave up on most western shows and am now watching South Korean and even some chinese shows as they are sooo much better.
I love this show!!! I never watched anime/manga before this, for any longer than an episode or 2. Not only did I watch the live action, (first), I'm on E65 of the anime. I absolutely LOVE the character development and I feel more invested in this show than I have in any show, probably ever. There's plenty of flaws in the show, but the story and characters make up for it in absolute abundance. I can't say enough good about it.
I loved how you used the one piece anime original soundtrack for editing this video ❤
Big One Piece fan here for over 20 years. Seeing someone as popular as you talk about One Piece makes my heart soar!
I LOVE your inclusion of all the One Piece anime music when you are explaining the plots!
And YES Garp is a positive mentor to Koby and Helmeppo.
