I don't exactly like Tom Cruise the person, but since he is willing to do movies that don't try to sell his ideas of how we should live or be crammed full any of that DEI stuff - his ideas would presumably be that cult stuff - I am still willing to pay for his movies.
Makes sense, I guess, the leaders of his cult seem to be quite well aware of how to make money, and presumably that is their whole aim (that is how the whole thing started, anyway, L. Ron Hubbard was reputedly quite open about it when talking with some other science fiction writers back in the day), so in his case, and to keep their star member making money, I presume Cruise may have been told to keep making movies that stay with those basics, and mostly only those basics. And Cruise probably has the clout to dictate what he is willing to make to the studios.
Kind of weird, but this may be one case where his cult is actually doing some good. Kind of inadvertently, just because they like money, but what the h**l, I'll take that.

Used to be these customers go to the movies to be entertained; The cultural event was just a natural side effect if the movie was well received.
Now we can be entertained in every way by a common device, so we go to the movies hoping less for that entertainment, and more for that cultural strength.
Hollywood's given us the opposite; Why we're not doing good enough, why we should be divided, why we should feel guilt, why we should be doing better,
why this demographic is better than that demographic, why your ancestors accomplishments are failures, why your culture is evil, why this society isn't worth saving, etc., etc.
Like Network News, Hollywood knew the new social tech was surpassing them, and they went for the bottom of the barrel to survive: The "consumers" instead of their Customers, deliberately leaving their customers behind in the dirt.

Part of the problems with the movie industry are:
    (1) Wokeness being preached in movies (see: Disney). The audience wants to go to be entertained, not to be lectured.
    (2) Remakes of classic films or films more than 20 years old, and re-done with poor quality writing and performances...especially the wokeness in said scripts.
    (3) Sequels. Too many sequels. No one wants to see the newer Ghostbusters or Planet of the Apes series, because it's all been done.
    (4) Super hero movies. Too many of them, and despite what the "experts" are saying, people ARE "burning out". And again - poor quality scripts and performances.
Basically, it comes down to poor quality, and a complete lack of understanding of the customer base.

It's also a problem with character writing in general. Every "diverse" character you write is scrutinized for "harmful stereotypes," which generally amounts to any negative trait, period. The consequence of this is that every "diverse" character has nothing about that that's really wrong (and thus can be worked on) and ends up empty, unjudgeable, bland, and ultimately boring, while the flawed white characters with potential to grow are much more interesting.

It isn't really that this isn't really new. After all the Pacino Scarface was a ethnically swapped remake, for example. It's that the people doing it don't know how to be entertaining, and worse it's not even their primary goal.

Yeah, but they don't even respect or enjoy the source material either. Why remake something that you despise? It's too hard to come up with something new with so many rules to follow and obligations to fulfill. But I can't feel sorry for writers when they prioritize messaging over entertaining. They remake these movies to target a certain audience and then proceed to insult that audience. But somehow, they act surprised by all the negative reviews. They're not afraid to insult anyone, but they only come to insult certain people based on sex, race, and religion. It just happens that the people they insult are in the majority, while they search for acceptance from minorities. Unfortunately for them, minorities don't like bad movies either.

From a young age, I have learned to sift out and analyze the ideas and values that conflict with mine while appreciating the good aspects like the clever or intricate storylines, witty wordplay, beautiful shots or scores, realistic characters, etc. In short, there has always been leftist, anti-Christian messages in entertainment throughout the ages, but we are in a period where the good aspects are often so lacking that they're not worth any of my time especially when there are much better options from the past or from other media.

Soon a few other reasons arrived: the radicalized kooks who like to shoot up a soft target and the nasty strong greasy odor of artificial butter for popcorn. Thankfully other good choices in the safety and comfort of home exist. As an oldie myself I don't get the line of thought in US entertainment and some other corporates. Here in Australia only the largest corporates try to virtue signal but we don't tend to go in for that stuff and are pretty loud in rejecting it. But our entertainment industry can't compete with the US so most of our content comes from there. I know entertainment has always skewed left but as a devotee of old HW film I often look up actors whose politics are listed (something we don't do) and it was almost 50/50 in terms of who they supported. An industry willingly drifting so far one way, claiming to be diverse whilst only allowing a single narrow viewpoint is an anathema to creativity, therefore profit.

The Taiwanese people are lining up in droves to see movies at all hours of the day. Apparently, Asian filmmakers are still making movies that capture their audiences' attention. Having triple world subs as US/Canada combined it's buying up or paying to produce more localised content we can all access. As a non American and part of the world that never had the entertainment finances to compete much, we were generally stuck with mostly US stuff whilst HW bragged the world lapped up its content when it was more lack of choice. Now internal politics have spilled over to the point of even pissing off Americans (other westerners mattered least) it's welcoming some US companies recognise non US content can widely appeal. Though I don't get Netflix capitulation to HW in light of its power.

I took my mom to a movie around 6pm on her birthday several years ago, to see avatar 3d, and the place was abandoned of employees. There was one person selling old popcorn, candy and sodas at just utterly obscene prices, but no other employees between us and the theaters. No one checked our ticket, there was a bin outside the theater with the 3d glasses for just anyone to help themselves to. We could've gone into any movie, maybe we even could've lived there for a day or 2. The theatre was so much smaller than they used to be; I walked away feeling like we had really been taken advantage of. Like I handed a man my money to stick by head inside a cardboard box for 2 hours. I felt like a cow that was there to be milked. Movie sucked of course. And this was the riverwalk theater downtown San Antonio, not some cheap theater time forgot.

But what I see is the cancellation of people who don't agree with a certain agenda and basically get discredited, socially banned or even worse: lose their jobs. What it does is create a huge rift between two groups of people and basically forces people in the political center to decide on which side they want to stand. There is just black or white, no shades of grey anymore. But I highly doubt that this will be more than a zeitgeist phenomenon. Well, at least I hope so.

With the increased attention on Hollywood, politics, wokeness, etc. actors have shown their ignorance, self-centeredness, narcacism, despicable behavior, etc. Knowing who they truly are destroys the characters they play. When I see these actors playing a role, I have a hard time embracing the character over the real person.

@@be23skido that's why actors in the past have been apolitical, distant and only making very rare public statements to say something of importance. In the past, you were very lucky to see your favorite actor appear a few times a year on chat shows and maybe do a magazine interview once or twice a year, and many of them even more rarely. Now, they post w0k nonsense 20 times a day.

That is why I usually don't listen to commentaries on DVDS and actors on talk shows. I want to love the character... the actors are just blank canvases who act like the character they portray. I don't care about their personal lives. I don't want to know their politics or world views. They are actors, not philosophers.

The problem is that discrimination and hate laws have made it impossible to fire the people who are the cause.
