@@michaeljurrien3507 Eh, to be fair, Zoro's backstory, while sad, isn't one of the stronger ones in the crew. And he's just as big of a jerk to Kuina in the anime/manga, but even more exaggerated. Though, he's drawn to look noticeably shorter/younger than her in the anime. I'm pretty sure the reason why he's so mean and hotheaded is to portray his immaturity about the world as a kid.
He's mean to her because at that point in his life, as a child, his perspective was that brute strength and aggression are the secret to mastery. As he got older, after learning from Kuina and even throughout the events of the story such as losing to Mihawk, Zoro places a lot more emphasis on focus and resolve. The live action wasn't perfect, but I thought that it was pretty clear why the shift in Zoro's personality happened.

It's really interesting seeing a review that solely focuses on the live action as it's own thing without any prior one piece knowledge. The gripes you had with the show are things faithful to the manga/anime of One Piece, meaning you were able to create a opinion on the story from just watching the live action which to me signifies just how good of an adaptation it is. Anime/manga isn't for everyone partly because the characters are very different than in most western story telling, so It's nice to see despite the gripes you had with the show like Zoro's backstory that you also could feel the awesomeness that is Mihawk being badass af :)
    Edit:
Joking after something brutal can be a coping mechanism to distance yourself from the reality of what just happened so it's not unrealistic actually, but in the context of One Piece it's to show that no matter how big of a threat exists in the world that laughter and smiles can still exist and it's a giant part of the atmosphere in One Piece so if you're here for the ride expect a lot more of it ^_^

Looking forward to more videos! If you're just starting out, I highly recommend watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as a starter. (As a One Piece fan..)
FMAB is shorter and incredibly well-paced compared to some other popular animes. You can finish it and make a review on it pretty quickly.
IMO, FMAB is the closest to perfection as far as anime goes, and I think many others would agree if they've watched the whole thing.
    - Solid characters: protagonists are very likable and not a single side character goes underutilized.
    - Great storytelling and pacing: it makes a dark and mature concept very digestible for any type of audience. Every scene is intentionally added for the plot.
    - Balanced comedic moments: they come at the right time and it's not overdone
    - Action: I usually get bored of fight scenes because I'm in it for the story but these animators really know how to make a fight scene look interesting.
Okay that was my pitch. Bye!

I hope you get more detailed in future videos, ( as especially I can speak for one piece fans), we never get tired of hearing in depth breakdown, and analysis of one piece or even other anime...
About the Zoro's backstory, it was more fleshed out and has better contexualized the relationship between Zoro and kuina, which live action couldn't fully delve into due to screentime constraints. Same happened with for Arong park arc. Still it's as effective as the original in some ways inspite of all those constraints, which in itself is a commendable job by Matt Owens and whole team!

Zoro quietly respected and loved Kuina. He is haunted by her death throughout the rest of the series. Zoro's backstory problem is more of the cultural differences that we kinda not totally related to. It is an asian thing, it is fundamentally coming from the idea of kuina's soul is still living inside zoro, and zoro is gonna bring her along the way to become the greatest swordman.
Zoro's dream when he was a kid, was coming from insecurity that he was the weakest, just like ussop. Their dream doesn't come from what they want, but what they lack of. They literally didn't have a dream. Zoro's dream is kuina's dream
I think the director doesn't totally relate to this idea themselves, that's why we felt that way

Here's the thing that the live action kind of mess up with the dynamics of the Straw Hats especially Luffy in the anime and manga. They're pirates they dont really care that much about "being good." They usually do good things simply because of happenstance. They helped save Coco village not because they had a problem with Arlong taking over the town but because they're friend was hurt by him. Luffy would have absolutely no problem stealing a boat if thats what it took to achieve his dream.

I think you misunderstood the zoro flashback. Zoro took Kunias sword as a way of honoring her because having that sword is like him saying we will become the greatest swordsman together and through out the series you can see that he draws strength from that sword because that sword has a great source of emotion. The entire reason zoro is living out his dream is for kuina. If it weren’t for her he would never have taken his dream this far.

one thing I have to say about the comedy. Oda, the mangaka, is a MASTER at his writing style. I've never seen someone write an emotional scene, interject with a quick joke, and then continue on with the emotions and make it fit so perfectly. It shouldnt work but yet it does and it happened more than once that I cried, then burst out laughing and when I turned the page I immediately cried again. One Piece is a pretty crazy experience xD.
The Live Action also changed some themes of the show wich is the part that annoyed me the most. I really dont know what the showrunners were thinking but here are some examples.
    1. In the LA Luffy says "I'm a different kind of pirate" multiple times, I dont think he every said that once in the entire 1113 chapters of the manga. Manga-Luffy wouldnt even think about something like that :D he is way to simple minded.
    2. This is the one that annoys me the most. Manga-Luffy cares alot about what people DECIDE to do with their lives and he really doesnt like the idea of someone being born a certain way and having no influence over it. I really dont understand why they kept hammering at the idea that Luffy was just simply born this way. Luffy never once said "I was just born a pirate". He always says "I've decided". Either they dont really understand the character or they just wanted to force in their own views into the show.
This might just be a me thing because I've become very allergic to any sort of modern political messaging in media after they butchered basically every good IP there is over the last couple years, so when I look at those changed it seems to me that someone wanted to sneak in some "born this way" messages

Only been watching anime since 2017. Seen so many bizarre concepts from:
"Let's all go to Antartica" (A Place Further than the Universe)
What if Satan got a job at McDonald's (Devil is a Part-Timer)
To a literal love triangle story in an amusement park between Kanye West, Queen Latifah, and 50 Cent. (Amagi Brilliant Park)
50 Cent and Latifah are both romancing Kanye, by the way, but alas, poor dude just doesn't realize it.

Generally, and not universally, speaking, when you are still coming down from the adrenaline high of a fight, you're probably going to be doing more laughing than crying. Crying is for 15 to 20 minutes later when all those chemicals your body flooded you with to keep your fists swinging drain out and you feel empty, weak, and the injuries start to actually hurt. That *is* real emotion. Your head isn't in a place where you're counting the casualties, it's ecstatic that you're not one of them.

Zoro doesn’t fight Kuina because he hates her, he fights her because he wants to beat her, and to Kuina, that is a form of respect and also something to respect, the same way Zoro wanted to beat Mihawk simply for being the best, which earned him Mihawk’s respect. Somebody striving to surpass you was something Kuina cherished, and the fact that one day, Zoro would inevitably do so, not because he fought to surpass her, but because of biology, was unfair, which is why Zoro giving his all to beat her meant so much to her

When you say, "after the epic battle, they started laughing", what specifically are you talking about? Zoro vs Mihawk, and who started laughing?
Also is important that after serious situations, you can diffuse the seriousness of it all pretty soon. In fact in some draft for the military, that is an aspect looked into soldiers(for example in ancient Rome).
I believe that the most important is not the fact that this happens, but the tact about how that is done.
One Piece is a series with a happy and good outlook into things, so it is the main point, that even in darkest times, you can and should see the brighter and funnier side of things.
That is another thing that for me they did wrong with the live Action, they brought the mood of the entire series down, and brought all the characters, especially Luffy, down to be more "emo/down" emotionally.

    • @cupppasoup
      @cupppasoup  Před 2 měsíci +1

Hmm I just tried to look for the part that I'm referring to when I'm talking about the laughing and I can't find it at the moment. But I think I meant it more as a general thing that I notice in anime. I was watching Solo Leveling and I think I remember seeing it happen there as well. Since this series is about someone like me who is novice to anime, something like laughing, after a very intense and traumatic event, feels out of place and it feels jarring to me. I need time to recover. Other people can feel differently and that's okay! I see your point about the military but I just mean in terms of the media that I consume. I prefer a more realistic approach to diffusing tension. Laughing feels like a cop out to me. IMO RESPECTFULLY NO HATE lolol this is just purely my opinion that's all and its all meant to be silly haha. Last thing: I felt as though the live action gave a very happy vibe The cinematography did a lot fo the heavy lifting for that though I will say. I didn't get emo vibes from fluffy he felt very happy to me :)

    • @bigivel
      @bigivel Před 2 měsíci

@@cupppasoup Yes, it happens a lot in anime and manga(And also in Manwha, in the case of Solo Leveling), that they try to make a transition between serious scene with a more lighthearted scene(mostly funny jokes).
This depending on the author it can be done well or pretty horrible.
In the end it has to do with the tact and how the transition and the joke are.
Basically, it varies a lot from series to series(and even from scenes to scenes).
Now what I can say is that the author of One Piece does this masterfully, not only this kind of transitions but all types of mood transitions.
The Live Action is comparable worse on it(also they don't do as many), but I didn't remember any place that it was jarring, so the reason I asked.
About the Live Action, in a side grabbed the happy and positive vibe of the series(and many other things, the main spirit) and that is why it is considered a good manga/anime adaptation(one of the few), but on another side it really downgraded the happy mood of a lot of situations, and the positive personality of the characters.
In the manga/anime, Luffy is a determined happy person, he knows what he wants and knows the mood he wants to go about doing them(happy go lucky). He never doubts or questions himself, nor cares that other people doubt or question him. He is that confident!
Zoro laughs and plays with the crew, Nami is an happy mischievious thief, and Ussop tells his obvious lies in good sport.
I would recomend for you to take a look at the anime.

about the child zoro thing, what oda was going for is that zoro wants to be the best in the world, and in his class the only one standing in his way is his friend kuina, shes leagues above everyone else, but shes aware its only a matter of time before the boys grow and her strength cant keep up. But zoro still sees her as hs goal to strive towards and gets angry she all but gives up on her future as a swordsman and her own potential. And for the thing where she says zoro better be ready to kill her its not about actually killing her but more about making zoro go all out, fight as if your life depends on it to get the absolute best out of yourself, anything less will never be enough. And the taking of her sword is a symbol of carrying her will with him. Kuina can no longer fight and become the best, so zoro will take her sword; a part of her, with him, and do it for the both of them.

I like that some parts were shortened but I does feel like you lose some emotional developments between characters or some plots that might be important for the future. A lot depends on how they do the next session. Because one piece is so interconnected. We did have a lot of Easter eggs and future plot set ups so I know that they really care about this story. Also because it’s live action the characters had to be tone down a bit. But it’s a great representation of what OP is and who the characters are.

@@KoenSamuel3souls Oh cool that makes sense! It's nice that they made it apparent that they cared a lot about the anime. I can imagine it can be difficult squeezing all of that storyline into 8 episodes haha but its cool that it was relatively well received by people who are og one piece fans!

    Important to note.
Zoro vs Kuina fight wasn't a fight to the death. It was a fight with real weapons/Swords!
Also Zoro characterization in the live action is all wrong.
Zoro has many friends, kuina isn't his "only" friend. And you couldn't even call her really his friend, but more like a rival and his goal.
Also Zoro is not a cool serious guy. He just is "more" serious than the rest of the crew and as the story progresses get more serious overall, and that is why they exagerated that aspect in the Live Action, but still he is pretty laid back guy, that laughs and plays with the rest of the members. In the anime you can see him joking around with Luffy, and even having is own gags.

Thank you for the insight! It was weird how they established their relationship it didn’t make sense to me as someone who doesn’t know that context. I’m excited to watch the anime!

He was just a young boy frustrated he couldnt be the best like most young boys in sport i dont get your issue with him even though its done so much better in the anime and it gives you more context but yea he was just competitive and yu can see that frustration also when he fought mihawk ...i think what really thru yu off was kuinas back story and if yu warch the anime yu just might find out more info in the future@@cupppasoup

The live action did a disservice to Usopp and Zoro’s flashbacks. Also, the live action overstates Zoro’s “cool” stoicism. He is a bit more loose and easy going in the source material (still cool, but not as uptight). The live action was great, but the anime/manga are league above it.
