- The Super Mario Bros. Movie has surpassed Frozen 2 as the biggest animated movie box office opening of all time. Nintendo and Illumination's adaptation of Super Mario Bros. didn't do well by critics, but audiences are absolutely loving it. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a perfect adaptation of the video games, setting the stage for a Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

I find it really funny how Mario in cinema has gone from failing miserably financially to literally having the highest grossing opening for any animated movie ever.

I mean, when I went to see it, the cinema was people that were going to see Mario, and there was A LOT OF PEOPLE
The answer was not making it live action
@@brandonandujar2289i mean i would agree, but there was an actual mario cartoon series that also failed MISERABLY. Most of the time series and movies based on videogames completely flop and vice versa. Live action has nothing to do with that. Im glad this one didnt flop tough

If they make a direct sequel to the Mario Movie, I REALLY hope they bring other characters, such as Princess Daisy (my fave), Rosalina, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, etc. Getting the whole crew in would be the absolute most welcomed cherry on top of this massive award winning Super Mario Movie cake!

The Super Mario Bros Movie is the first movie in a long time that I refused to wait until it came out on streaming services. I went to the theaters with bubbles in my stomach and left with an ear to ear smile. No movie has made me feel so happy ever.
This, if you ask me, is the start of a whole new era for video game movies. An era where they can prove that they have the potential to be excellent adaptations of their source material and not just made for a quick buck.
I hope so. Comic book movies are getting overexposed, and video game movies, quite frankly, had nowhere to go but up.
We've finally reached the point where the people working on these films actually played the source material

0:38 As cool as it it that the Mario movie has become so successful, it's still kinda sad that EVERY SINGLE MOVIE on that chart, including this one, is a sequel, remake, or adaptation. We all complain that Hollywood doesn't give us enough original movies, but when none of the top grossing animated movies are original stories, it kinda proves their point that audiences only want what they're familiar with
Think about it this way: would you rather watch a movie of something you love or something you don't know about
Original ideas usually don't work is because the ideas are usually dogwater
That is very true
My thought exactly! Only original movies should count for that ranking.
Original movies are a risk in the industry

If they keep this up, Nintendo gonna start making more films in the future. Donkey Kong (spin-off), Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Star Fox, Metroid etc. leading up to Super Smash Bros. "avenger-like" movie.

They are pretty much in charge of the whole production of the Mario movie, that's why we get what we got.

@@valentinkambushev4968 Almost positive it’s deeply rooted in the console war between sega and Nintendo back in the day. Where sega would constantly compare and showcase how much faster sonic was. It’s been goin on for a while. But yeah I understand what you mean two VASTLY different characters and worlds being compared, barely have anything in common.
Finally there is a Mario movie that is very well done unlike the live action version.

@@yuvalamor6668 when you are trolling you need to be less obvius
@@yuvalamor6668 There are a few reasons why I think the live action version doesn't look good:
1. The princess Mario and Luigi met is Daisy
2. The world Mario and Luigi traveled to didn't even look like the Mushroom Kingdom
3. Bowser looks nothing like in the original game

I invited 20 friends to this movie for my birthday April 7 we all cheered when it was over. 🎉 I waited my whole childhood for this movie.
This is amazing. My brothers and I have been Mario fans for as long as we can remember, and we were so excited when we saw the movie. It’s such a blessing, just pure fun and memories of childhood. So proud of this movie.
It's almost as if making a movie that actually looks and feels like the series it's based off of and that is already known to be very popular and beloved will actually succeed.
Shocking, I know.
That only works if the series is universally liked.
@@valentinkambushev4968 Well, do you have any major examples of movie adaptations that were faithful to their source material that didn't do so well? Japan does this much more than the west but only suffers from its limitations in budget and resources, plus all the actors being Japanese. (FullMetal Alchemist had this issue with all the actors being Japanese in a world that takes place in a Germany-like country)
The point I make is that so many adaptations fail because western directors do not feel confident in or barely know the source material, so they ignore the appeal it had to its existing audience and fan base. I'm not saying every movie has to be a home run like Mario as he is universally popular, but I will say that it should be fairly obvious that making an adaptation should be faithful enough that it is recognizable and has many of the same elements that people loved about it in the first place, instead of trying to shoehorn in elements and changes that the director thinks doesn't make sense or whatever. (Last Airbender is an example of it all done wrong, even if some things were recognizable, the poor acting, cast choices, and director choices to change the world like Firebending requiring existing fire because he personally didn't understand it, rubbed people the wrong way.)
@@TayoEXE Totally agree. Which is why if films or animation projects go into production hell, I could careless if it's a video game movie or horror movie, it'll always fail financially at the box office. but nowadays video games went from being a novelty in the 70s and 80s to now being a major part of American culture, much like the Japanese culture of the 70s and 80s embraced video games much earlier than we did. But again, it doesn't hurt to have a combination of different styles. Maybe, one of these days, we'll see a live action Nintendo film that lives up to the same source material as the video game counterpart. It doesn't mean we should have a video game based off of a movie all the time, it just means that there are more audiences out in the world that love video games more nowadays compared to 30 40 years ago when it was just a fad, much like all other 80s franchies of its time. (Garbage pail kids being one of those).
Personally, I'd be confident making my own version of the Mario film in live action, and many other video game films in this same way, but from a video game player's point of view. It's been something I've thought about for 20 years since I was inspired to eb a director, producer, and a writer since 7 years old. I see this mario movie from illumination as a collage of different mario properties all into one film, and even if I see it, I guarantee you it wouldn't change my mind whether I see the film or not. But, when other video game franchises come in, you know that I always look forward to see how they pull it off.
Again, if live action and animated video game movies can co-exist with eachother, that'd make me happy knowing I can enjoy both versions of the same franchise. The only thing that companies need to realize is that video game films are as long as epics (epics being almost 3 to 5 horus long.)

Overall, it’s pretty great to see Super Mario taking Ws during only the first 1/3 of 2023 after being overshadowed by his rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, and with this grand success, he might actually be catching up.
What 10 billion views?
@@yuvalamor6668 yep, this record is way less known, but it’s still a huge W
When they hit theaters they said let's a wait, when it smashed records as #1 they said LETS A GO!!!
It’s been like a week since the movie came out, and it’s already the number 1 animated movie
The sequel is in the works! The Nintendo Cinematic Universe is in full circle!
Imagine a Punch-Out movie, and a Smash Bros movie 😅
@@DrasticFox2004 Imagine a Zelda movie 🤩
Imagine none of those
Again dude I am not saying this again but a lot of Nintendo fans are here and Nintendo will make them as they have gotten the will after this movie
Xenoblade, Animal Crossing, Puzzle League, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart movie......
“NintenDID what NintenDIDN’T before.”
“One small step for screen, one giant leap for cinema.”
“Critics are true evil sometimes, and this is no exception.”
“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.”
I think the Opening Scene with Bowser and the Penguins predicted how the whole movie would top Frozen 2…
And top Frozen 1.
I love how you added weird 3d trophies ontop of the already present trophies yup it makes alot of sense /j
As a Mario and sonic fan (I like sonic more slightly) this was one of the greatest movies I have ever watched and I don’t compare these two movies there good in there own right like sonic being live action while Mario is animated.
One is good and one is bad the bad one is mario

Bro what else have you watched? An hour of paint drying? Puss in boots 2 blows this out of the water. What about Kung Fu Panda 2? Or Megamind, or How to Train Your Dragon, or the emotional Toy Story 3?
@@yuvalamor6668 nah
Disney: Frozen
Me: I want the REAL Frozen!
Nintendo: here's Peach with Ice Flower
Me: Perfection
Peach is way better than Elsa
That movie was amazing when I just watched it all the good animation, details, and everything and the voice actors. Let’s not forget that.
I loved it and I can’t wait for more. I can’t wait to get on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray.
Hey... You hear that?.....
That's Elsa and Anna having a total meltdown!
And Mario and Luigi celebrating!
Well, I watched it yesterday, and Honestly I couldn't be anymore happier:D
I've never watched this movie before but yeah they deserve a lot of recognition and hopefully I might be able to watch it and probably enjoy the whole movie. I sometimes play the classic Super Mario Bros and it makes me very interested to watch The Super Mario Bros!
I’m a Sonic fan and I’m watching this movie! I don’t play Mario at all but I just love good video game movies, Sonic had one so instead thinking “Mario stomped on Sonic again” I see it as “now Mario and Sonic BOTH have good movie adaptations together!”
The critic are like THIS IS ONLY 54% BECAUSE ITS WEIRD AND STUFF! And the audience is like LETS GO THIS IS SO GREAT
I'm super happy, I already saw the movie and it was really cool, the only problem is that the story was too rushed, but I still liked it, I'm just waiting for a sequel to see if the other princesses, Daisy and Rosalina, appear 💗🥰
Stop thinking about things which won't happen
@@yuvalamor6668 it most likely will happen, what are you talking about

We're definitely getting a sequel now!

This is amazing! Nobody expect it to be THIS BIG! Well done, Mario fans! We're winners tonight, y'all! Wa-hoo! Let's-a goooo!!! Win win, baby!
I played only Super Mario,on the Wii, Mario cart, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. But even after just playing those few games seeing this movie brought back so many memories with all the aspects of the actual game they put in. It brought me joy when I was able to point out a certain character, enemy, or item I recognize when I played the actual game.
GOOD RIDANCE THIS IS DESERVED I saw it yesterday and I loved it
This keeps getting better and better! If this movie was a success, I hope The Super Mario Bros. Movie would be awarded by Golden Globes & Oscars!
I’m glad it proved that theaters aren’t dying
I don’t think they ever did, just certain theaters 😂
That is INSANE! The Super Mario Bros. Movie is kicking butt! I saw this movie on Saturday and I LOVED every single moment of it! This movie is CRUSHING box offices! It's doing so well, it even beat out FROZEN. I'll be DEFINITELY seeing this AWESOME movie again! I've been wanting to see this movie for AGES and I'm glad I finally saw it!
Just watched it a couple hours ago. My theater clapped when it was over too ^^
I knew Mario would break all the records if it ever got a movie like this! The type of movie that actually stook with the source and animated I know a movie like that would break so many records.
