Overanalyzing EVERY Super Mario Bros Movie Redesign! - A Super Mario Bros Movie Review and Analysis!

- The Super Mario Bros Movie has had trailer after trailer drop recently, including one clip as recently as the 2022 Game Awards! And people seem to be psyched to see their favorite Nintendo icons on the movie screen! Y'know in between posting memes and ragging on Illumination Entertainment and Chris Pratt of course. (Not Jack Black though, he's safe! ^^) Anyway, all the main staples of the Super Mario franchise have had redesigns done to fit with the big budget animation look the movie is going for! And you know how much I love to review and analyze tiny design changes! So join me now as I take a deep look into the character redesigns for the 6 main players in the movie; Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad and Donkey Kong, compare them to the original and rank them! Do the icons of Miyamoto's Mushroom Kingdom look close to their original counterparts? Do they come out better or worse in the end? Let's find out! ^^ And like usual, please like and comment if you can. It would really help me out. :)
P.S. - I'm not gonna talk about any of the voice actors yet. Maybe if this video does well and people wanna see me pick them apart I will, but for now, it's gonna be visuals only.
P.S.S - Yes, Mario's Flat Butt was indeed a meme on twitter. XD Some people even called it inferior to a minion butt. And this will probably be the first and last butt that will ever inspire one of my videos.
P.S.S.S - Wario and Waluigi better be in the movie too, or I'm gonna be upset. ;w; I didn't even see them during the Mario Kart race! Waaaaaaa!

Bowser to me is literally a perfect character design because he can look both very menacing and fearful, but when it's time for a spin-off for him or him to be likeable, he you very much look the part have a good guy or at least a likeable character.
And giving Bowser a sort of "Hades" treatment in this movie, being the comic relief and a rather serious threat, is perfect for his design
Just look at the fanarts that show him with Bowser Jr they look so adorable! But at the same time other arts make him a total badass really intimidating!
he's like a bear (if you know what I mean... like, bears are vicious beasts that'll rip you a new one, but they're also this "cute furry critter" symbol, for whatever reason... movie Bowser is like that)

@@jaco8822 Basically with Mario's design is that i feel he is suppose to look more like chris pratt but still retain the iconic Mario features and i think they juggled those things well. This is one talented ass studio man plus they got miyamoto all the more reason why this movie will be the best video game movie of all time

I think Mario looked the best when he was looking at the leaky faucet. You also know the design for Peach is good when you can automatically hear Anya’s voice just from looking at the promotional poster.

I think this Peach is a tad to bitter. I can see her being a little rude which is not Peach. I think it's another case of confusing bravery and strength with being a jerk. Now I don't think she is a total jerk. I said a little bit. All in all it's the wrong personality for Peach.

@Destiny there has been different iterations of her voice. And the ones were she’s fully talking like in her super Mario bros show her voice is not fluffy and light. But I can see how you feel about about it

I just wanna point out the neat detail of the green from Bowser’s head bleeding onto his shoulders, showing the transition from yellow to green looks really organic and works well imo and it makes him look all the more creature-like
The thing is in the movie, Mario and Luigi are from the "reel" world. It kinda plays out as an "origin" story for them. So it makes sence Mario doesn't "fit" this world unlike in the games because he isn't from it.
And that's why Mario's voice isn't like the games
it's basically a more faithful (to the source material) retelling of the old (1993) super mario bros. movie (the Bob Hoskins one that people hate, but I absolutely adore it for some reason... probably part nostalgia, part the first video game adaptation "ever" - that I've seen, anyway... and the interdimensional travel/alt. universe parallel dimension thing à la the Sliders TV show from 1995 - it's basically an Isekai movie, lol)

One thing I don’t think people thought about when we first heard Illumination was the studio making the movie was that they might solely be there for the animation quality. Illumination, however bad you think their movies are, has some extremely good animation quality and so if they do the visuals while Nintendo works on the story then the movie is going to absolutely amazing, and with the trailers it feels like this is all but confirmed
Sometimes illumination has better looking visuals than disney, So im glad they chose them for the animation!
Yeah i don't get why everyone was so afraid. Aside from the initial memes and jokes about it, did people seriously think Nintendo would let them just run wild with THE Mario movie? Especially after what happened with the CDI games?

I love the bowser design, and I can't help but feel like his expressions and face are designed after jack black, they way he talks and smiles etc. just looks perfect
fun fact about the DK redesign
it is ment to be a mix between DKC DK and the DK found on the artwork of the original arcade game
that is why he has brown around his eyes rather then black & looks goofier then his DKC version
DK’s redesign somehow looks both more cool and more goofy than his DKC design not that I’m complaining.
Actually, it's more of a mix between the DKC DK, and the proposed design Miyamoto made that ended up being used for Game Boy Donkey Kong (a few months prior to DKC).
I was hoping someone would point this out.
You put more gusto into that "wahoo!" at the beginning than Chris Pratt ever could.
Last I remember, Donkey Kong was designed with the intention of having his movie incarnation look like a mix of Modern DK and the old arcade game.

I think they made Mario more realistic since it seems they’re going into the idea that Mario and Luigi are from the real world, so making them look semi-normal fits that idea
But only his head still being so fat looks mismatched
With that in mind, maybe the fact that his actor can't do anything outside of a normal dude from the US, may not be so bad.
And remember the last film about a famous jump and run character and how the fans hated the “classic” design. I think they were really frightened to get a backlash on the design like sonic did.

Edit: Eh, she was a cool competent leader that cares for what she loves, (wished they showed more of that) but eh.
Definitely way too overpowered, made Mario the main character, look like a joke, and she literally freezes Bowser in the film, showing that didn't really need Mario in the first place. Sigh...

The whole appeal of that character type is that it's uncommon, but now it feels like the majority of movies follows that and now we are back at square one
And I also feel like Peach is the worst character to fill this role, it's the straight opposite of the games
Also why is Luigi the damsel in distress it's still a boring trope but now we can't say it's tradition

And Peaches proportions are messed up, her eyes look bigger which results in her looking really out of place when the opposite was made to most characters
Uhh this tuned into an everything wrong with Mario Movie, the rest is good and I think the movie will be good in the end

I think I could forgive the strong woman at least this time. Peach has shown on occasions that she can be very badass but that side of the character is not well known in the mainstream world, generally seen as a one-dimensional damsel in distress, so I am optimistic unlike other occasions..ahem ahem captain marvel...
@@IDKisReal2401 Luigi is the "damsel in distress" because it's a stronger motivation for Mario. He's saving his blood brother rather than some girl he's never met.
One small thing that’s noticeable about bowser’s redesign is that his teeth are more spread in the middle. This is done so that his snout can serve as lips in order to make him a lot more expressive. A very small change that goes a long way
I think all of the characters in this movie are incredibly well designed, and I have no doubt this will be one of the best movies of all time!

In other posters you notice that Bowser has green faded scales on his shoulders which connect to his green face super well, it’s such a minor yet major detail that I can’t help but love

FINALLY, someone acknowledges that Peach is a decent character and not just a kidnapping victim! I'm so tired of people dismissing her as having no personality when it's just objectively not true.
I think they were trying to make Donkey Kong look more like Donkey Kong Jr. which I noticed the second I saw him, and I loved that! The design itself doesn't look bad, probably about the same as Mario imo, but knowing that he looks similar to the original DK Jr. makes me love it even more. Because of that, my rating of 7 goes up to an 8 for his movie design.
Although comparing to video game characters versus movie characters is actually really unique they look like the same and a little bit like their video game counters overall I really love it I just hope that the universe could have these new future character models

I love peach so much, I main her in every Mario game I can. I'm extremely happy with how she looks and feels in the trailer and posters. She's the peach I know, the peach I've been playing as all these years, only even more realized

Bowser’s design actually does have a lot of physical changes. Ones I noticed right off the bat were his tail got more spikes (2 in the game design, 3 or 4 in the movie), his mouth got more teeth (12 in the game, about 22 in the movie). Then on closer inspection, the green skin of his head bleeds down onto his shoulders, instead of stopping entirely under the neck collar. And the red rings around the spikes on his shell were turned into yellow/orange jagged growths sprouting out of the shell. I agree, it’s a great design, but there are several real physical changes to it, more than any other character I’d say.
Gonna be honest with you, REALLY loved the way they managed to incorporate Jack Black's looks onto Bowser. Looking at him in the first trailer, it just really works
I love how you mentioned New Super Mario Bros was your very first Mario game which in actual fact was mine too. That game made me get introduced to Mario and I’m glad I’m still in this franchise to this date
I really like everything about the movie so far, from the designs to the voices and the visuals. It's all perfect for me.
What I like about Toad's redesign that no one talks about it is their cheeks.
In the games, Toad's head is basically a ball, but in the movie, those cheeks add more shape to the head, and a lot more expressions to the eyes and mouth.
It's a barely noticeable detail that changes a lot.
I honestly think adding cranky's old design to Donkey Kong for the movie is a good idea since he was originally drawn as a cartoon character and that translates very well to animation
I think Toad in particular is incredible, everything from the more clearly visible legs to the voice, it makes it feel like a “realistic” version of Toad, like the one we know is a cartoon character, and this is the true version. The others are all pretty clearly stylized, and I do like most of them, but this is probably the only design I’d advocate to put in the actual games.
This is why illumination is my favorite company when it comes to animated films because they add such great texture to everything that makes the visual seem real
We've barely seen Kamek in most of the trailers besides the first one and some TV spots, but I think his design looks great. Compared to the games, his movie design does a good job making him seem like an old wizard serving an evil king.
I just want to say regarding Kamek's design, that he somehow looks more bone than the literal skeletons in the movie, which I find hilarious.
Here's hoping the movie turns out to be just as well-received as Sonic's recent cinematic outings. Otherwise, old-school Sega fans are gonna be gloating SO hard 😅
Peach is probably my favorite redesign, just looking at her you can get the vibes of elegance but the smirk tells you she is not afraid to be a little spicy.
Bowser is just a perfect design, full stop. The fact that they didn't change anything but the textures for the movie speaks to how strong the original is, and how easily it translates into Illumination's style.

Best part about Peach is that they used her Mario Kart biker outfit. Although I think the best redesign is Bowser's. Peach is a little better than the original but feels a bit off, Bowser stayed true to his source material better than anyone else but they still managed to improve on him.
They really captured Anya’s captivating very mature aura in peach very surprised

I will say, Miyamoto himself said that DK's redesign resembles his more classic design. And comparing the redesign with the Arcade artwork and the Donkey Kong GB game's box art, I kinda see it.

Her constant kidnappings in most of the games really affected the fanbase’s perception of her, and I hope Nintendo will do stuff what they did with her in games like Super Paper Mario and Mario RPG more in the future

I’m very excited for this movie! My favorite Nintendo character is peach and so to actually see her be more of a ruler then JUST a damsel in destress is actually really exciting to me and I know many others! I know many OG fans don’t really like it but I absolutely love it and I’ve seen many compare her personality to daisy, but we literally got a 2 minute trailer. I think miyamoto will still keep her peachy essence, but have her be more of a ruler which is actually very exciting!!

The new DK design is a hybrid between the classic style (before DK Country) and the modern one (DK Country onwards). Miyamoto clearly stated this in that direct where the second trailer was revealed

I definitely enjoyed this video. Makes me want to hear what Finn thinks about character design for characters he doesn't know the personality of. Including (possibly) the characters of the webcomic El Goonish Shive. Especially if he reacted to the multiple forms for some characters. Doubt that'll happen, because it probably wouldn't do well with the algorithm, but still.
I like Donkey Kong's. Usually, he is a big angry brute, but now he's a big playful brute.

I absolutely love all the movie designs, to me they all are 10 out of 10, perfects adaptations of the games designs.
Honestly I think I prefer the more realistic look to the brothers. It makes sense seeing how they originally are from a regular human world, specifically Brooklyn. Because of that, then looking more realistic compared to the cartoony mushroom kingdom is a good look.

One thing you forgot about bowser is he has extra green on the arms which I think is pretty good
The reason that his hair and eyebrows don’t match is because it is a very common trait among Italian immigrants. I come from heavy Italian descent, but the red hair gene was introduced a couple generations back. When it doesn’t manifest on a man’s head, it will manifest in his facial hair. It’s really interesting actually and totally justifies Mario’s appearance.
Mario, Peach, Luigi & Bowser's designs in the movie are perfect in my opinion. Especially Peach & Bowser. Donkey Kong's is the only one that looks a little off, but overall it still looks very much like Donkey Kong.

Bowser’s only big change in the movie appears to be a 3rd spike on his tail. He also has green on his shoulders by the looks of it.
I actually love the new design for donkey Kong, it makes him look more like the original Kong, which is clearly what the movie is referencing there.
I know cranky was the original Kong, and donkey Kong as we know him is crankys' grandson. But I still love the redesign regardless.
I like the DK re design as a blend of his first arcade appearance and his DK Country look.

One of my favourite details about Bowser's movie design is the fact they gave his shoulders fading green scales.
It's an _incredibly_ minor thing, but it adds so much in making him look like a more believable reptile.
I'll be honest, I never really liked the fact that the Bowser's green colour was pretty much exclusive to his head and shell. His body being all yellow (while still good-looking) was always a bit odd to me. (Which is why I tend to use the Green costume when playing him in Smash.)
So to me, giving his design a _visible_ shift between the green and the yellow is just... _~chef's kiss~_

Conclusion ; To make Bowser perfect, you give him Jack Black’s face
I really hope we get to see Fawful in a sequel. Maybe Antasma as well, but I think he is a bit of a stretch. Fawful though… he has potential. Don’t get me wrong, they both have potential. Heck, there isn’t much I wouldn’t do to see the two freaking TEAM UP! But we probably aren’t getting the villainous vampire we know and love from Dream Team anytime soon. But I could see Fawful possibly appearing in a sequel… Someone at Nintendo make it happen!
Illumination Bowser is an 11. No other way I can say it. I just fucking love his expressions
You pretty much just said everything I have on my mind, saving me from writing yet another essay. I trust Illumination with Mario and to hit this movie out of the park. I'm glad they changed up not just the characters' but also the world's designs a little bit to make them feel more immersive and real, rather than going with the exact same art style from the games. I won't say which one I think is better for now - that'll probably come with time - but in my mind, they're about even.
Now onto some last-minute comments which I have yet to say anywhere. First, *MARIO KART AND RAINBOW ROAD IS IN THE MOVIE?! WHAT?!?! I AM SO HYPED FOR THAT!* Really can't wait to see what role they will play.
Second, Peach. I'm less interested in her design and more interested in the character that she is showing here. For ONCE, it doesn't look like she's going to be a useless damsel in distress who is all sweet and fluffy all the time, but rather, an actual princess with charm, wit, and brains, taking command against this massive force in the form of Bowser and the Koopas to protect her kingdom. Will she get kidnapped at some point in the movie? Probably. I'd be shocked if she doesn't. But I can tell you that unlike the games, it won't be without a fight, and that I could not be more excited for. In short, it looks like she's getting the character development that I have yet to see in the games. :D

I have literally three hair colors. I have blonde hair atop my head, black eyebrow hair, and my facial hair is as red as strawberry shortcake. Im like the neopolitan ice cream of hair

Pretty surprised about the segment on Bowser, because he had LOADS of changes. So to be talked about as if he's exactly the same was puzzling. His teeth were moved inward so that he can close his mouth without any teeth poking out. The separation between many parts of his body was removed, and instead his scales change color. He has like, double the amount of teeth. His eyes are rounder. the spikes on his shell are connected to the shell in a quite different way. I think it's just his complexity that makes the changes stand out less. Out of all the characters, his design was already pretty complicated, so I guess it's not as easy to see what's different? To me it's clear as day though. He looks great in some places, but pretty uncanny in others. I'm very mixed about it.
In general I'm not really a fan of the more realistic style they chose for everyone. Some of the more recent games went for really detailed textures, while keeping the simplicity and cartoony aspects of the classic designs. Meanwhile, the movie tries to remove a lot of that cartoony-ness and also adds loads of extra details that I don't really like. Mario has tiny hands, a small nose, a smaller mustache, etc.
Peach is my least favorite redesign, not gonna lie. She just doesn't really feel like Peach to me. I'm not a fan of her super-detailed dress, or the ornate crown. Her face also just makes her feel like a different character (to be fair, they did change up her personality quite a bit for the movie). Really all I like about it is the bigger mouth and the larger eyebrows. Game Peach suffers from having nearly invisible eyebrows, and a tiny mouth that can't move very much. Compare her animations in Mario Strikers: Battle League to Rosalina's and you'll see a big difference in terms of expression.
Toad is essentially perfect. I still prefer the game design, but the changes are really nice and help the movie toads stand out, while still feeling very very faithful to their source.
DK is my favorite redesign. I don't even like it THAT much, but just the idea of it is so cool. It's taking that classic Miyamoto & Kotabe DK design and applying it to Modern DK. In some poses it looks bad, like on that poster. But in other places it looks great. Really, really digging it.
Another thing that spawned from this (or atleast stoked the flames) was the ship between Bowser and Luigi.
From what I heard the hair and facial hair mismatch is from the pixel days. had to use different shades to distinguish what was what and it stuck
I think mario is more like a normal guy for the context in this movie (he is only a plumber that gets into this magic world)
