I've gotten many question regarding what Total Gym / Sliding Bench Trainer is best for a particular person and or what are some differences between the models. This can be confusing considering there are many models all with subtle differences and prices. Even prior to posting this video, prices on Total Gyms covered changed within a day. The G1 for example was out of stock and now the day of releasing the video, it is not only back in stock but reduced to $249. Please let me know down below any questions / comments and I'd be happy to answer.

Hey man. Great video. As a 20+ year TG user, I'm glad you divided the models into the three true tiers (small post, premium infomercial, and then commercial grade) that exist. So many times I've had to explain to friends and family what the difference is and why the Costco model is cheaper than the Fit (as an example).
I've been on commercial-grade models for at least 10 years and I'm never looking back. Something to consider is you can pick up older commercial-grades (14000, GTS, Power Tower, Elevate) on the secondary market all day for cheap; like, sub 300 dollars. And the build quality is untouchable.
Tangent to my fellow big dudes out there: the wheels will go out of round on you on all models below Commercial-grade. It's not if - it's when.
I'm not hating on the infomercial models. My wife has an XLS and it's a great piece of equipment. But it'll be rotting in a landfill while our 14000 and Power Tower models we have in our garage gym are going strong 10, 20, 30 years from now.
Great information. Thanks for sharing that.
Wow,... I guess I need to look into the after market. You selling? Haha
I just bought my Total Gym Fit on QVC yesterday for $799.00! Such a great deal!!
I got used for $400 with all of the extras was like new people buy them and hardly ues them crazy to buy it new ! Had a LX also used 200 with all the extras too..
I'd be impressed if Total Gym included the large squat stand with every model.
They used to at the beginning
My family had one of the originals and it had the large stand, pull-up bar, plates attachment, and had 10 levels.
Used it all throughout highschool. Was kinds sad after I moved out they sold it when I wanted it when covid hit.
But have my own now XL7 I'm happy with it plus my brother works at a thrift store and they always get attachments donated so you know cheap price for really high quality just clean them and your good.
@@chocobunbun Wow, that's AWESOME.
pretty sure a couple U-bolts and some plywood would make a large squat stand
Very useful information ! I think the most important feature by far is support for the weight bar because it (1) supports weight plates (2) provides anchor points for resistance bands (3) acts a handle, which is super important for heavy squats and calf work. Even with a lower weight limit of 300 lbs, you can always use resistance bands and they don't contribute to the weight limit. On a side note, I can't understand why anybody would opt for the Supreme. $700 for only 275 lb. maximum weight an no weight bar option ???? The Apex G3/G5 and the Gr8Flex are all better AND cheaper.
Thanks! I think the best of the cheaper models would be the G5. Then the XLS for the mid level and then the Fit for the top (that I can afford). I just ordered a Fit and am so excited. I’ve been using a TG 1000 that is at least 20 yrs old and it’s worn out.
I have a XLS I use a block of wood to get half increments. I use it in the front to go up half and at the back to go down half and it quick and stable.
Thank you so much for your hard work. It has helped me very much!!!
No problem at all.
Thank you so much. You do such a great job explaining the Total Gym.
Appreciate that, thank you for watching and commenting.
@@hybridresistance That was the comparison I absolutely looking for 👌😊
Hey Bud, great video. I actually was watching your channel before I bought my Total Gym Fit early last year. After watching a lot of your videos, I bought the Total Gym Fit. Two reasons why: 1) I was able to purchase it while making monthly payments. 2) The Total Gym Fit had a 450 lb weight capacity. I'm 5'11" tall and weigh 240 lbs. I bought the weight extension bar so I could add weight (still adding weight to it). You are spot on about the smoothness of the Total Gym Fit. I am completely satisfied with my purchase. The other thing I want to add to my home gym is the Leike Fitness Sissy Squat stand. I watched your video and love that piece of equipment. That's on my radar to get. I will use your link so you get something out of it. Anywho, anyone who buys the Total Gym Fit should be happy with it. There are plenty of attachments to add to this machine. I love mine. One side note: If you buy or if the Total Gym company sends you a Total Gym GTS Elevate machine, you HAVE TO make a video about it. I'd be very interested in your thoughts. Thanks again for the video, excellent! - Mike
Thanks Mike for that background and update on the benefits you're finding with the machine. I also really appreciate the support in using the links. One day I hope to at least mess around with a GTS or Elevate machine and provide some feedback. Thanks again
Great video. Thanks for the help decoding models.
No problem, thanks for watching.
Thank you. This was very helpful.
The GTS glide board is soooooo nice. And being able to angle it or flatten it is too. My wallet hated me, my back didn't. It was worth it lol
Hello, I bought the supreme a few years ago when it was a tsv on qvc. It came with 7 attachments and a few training dvds for $299. I couldn't pass it up and I like using it. Thanks for the comparisons.
That XL7 looks like a good deal. Definitely agree the Supreme is not worth the money based on what else is out there. I was looking at purchasing an Elevate. The guy I spoke to at Total Gym offered me 22% off plus the strength package at no charge. He also mentioned they would be increasing their prices soon. Not sure if that is just a sales tactic but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the case considering all the supply chain issues and recent inflation.
I made my own squat stand and it works great😎
Great info!
I working on getting my TG back up and going, I have had one for years it been down half the time because of the wheel, I purchased a 1700 and the wheel broke on it the first day I used it and I didn't use it until Mayoa year or more until I purchased it ,so it needs wheels also ,
but I really like the Total Gym it's a bunch of fun and once you get used to it you will get fit. 😊
thanks. this was helpful.
Excellent review.
Thanks again for watching Lou.
Great job. Its appreciated
Thanks Terrance.
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. Good flick!
I was in the market for a 3 to 5 hundred dollar Machine rower. Then I remembered I was interested on a total gym and I think ultimately this is better for a true work out machine that does pretty much the same thing.
Although, I do think the rower offers a "get on and don't think about it" experience that the total gym would stump you on given its diverse function.
Thank you. I bought a used TG 1900 practically brand new, which looks identical to the XL7. I was after the attachments and don't need the extra weight bar. Very happy with my choice thanks for the information.
Look for a used GTS. I got mine for $700 and it was in perfect condition!
That's great. Can't beat that.
Was that before March 2020?
@@briand5047 Yes
I bought the Fit and 100% satisfied. My friend bought the $399 Model and is 100% satisfied so it’s win win whatever model one has. That said, get the best you can afford and then wear it out. Fitness follows those who consistently utilize equipment.
Great points Mattew. Any sliding bench / Total Gym is better than none.
Has anyone used a GTS classic? They are like 15 years old back when the company was called EFI Sports Medicine and they have since changed it back to Total Gym. It's different than the current GTS that they sell. Just curious if people recommend that one as they can be had for pretty cheap, sometimes cheaper than these QVC ones
I got the 2400 instead of the infomercial very because I am 6'3". I have had it at least 20 years
I have a total gym 2400 with I think all the accessories. but I'm missing One thing you have the straps with handles on the wings you were doing pull ups with.
Thank you so much for doing this video, found a TG extreme on OfferUp brand new for $100 from my understanding you can’t add the weight bar? But I’m just wondering at 280lbs should I jump in this asap? Thanks for the help and making these videos really appreciate it!
Thank you. Yes, you cannot add the weight. I personally would opt for one that does offer it. But any Total Gym is better than no Total Gym.
My two choices are the g5 or the xtreme. Price is the same and weight is about the same. Which one would you pick and for what reason would you pick one over the other? Great video, thanks
G5 all day because the xtreme doesn't have the option for the weight bar attachment.
Thank you for the great info. I am looking to purchase one of this machines. I like to know the difference between all this machines and the Total Gym Pilates Elite Plus. It's just the attachments??
Yes, for the most part its the attachments, the ability to have a weight bar attachment, weight limit, and levels of resistance.
Love the GTS or Elevate Encompass. What about the Power Tower? All are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE.
I haven't seen the power tower. I'll check that out.
XL7 if you don’t need the weight bar. Apex series if you want weight bar capability
I had a total gym ultra many many years ago from QVC, I regret it going to the garage then out for pickup or trash because I'd like to try it again but not sure how much of my issue with it was the machine itself or my weakkness/fatness/improper technique. I was on it with a medium setting I guess (not flat but not at the top either) facing away to do the leg pulley and I wasn't as strong as I thought and when I pulled with the leg in the pulley system it shifted the bench off the track a bit (not to the floor but enough it went off track and jarred me and my balance got way off) this happend a couple of times. another time I had the arms with my back to the top and had the loops in my hands then stupidly picked up m y feet and , well , gravity took over and I fell back because whatever muscles I was gonna work needed a flat bench I think. anyways, I did enjoy the back and forth movement vs standing with dumbbells so I'm debating one again.
anyways, there are sooo many models and I'm not sure if the cheaper ones are the same at coming off the track or if all will do that with the wrong angle on the move? I'm mostly interested in trying the leg pulleys and arms with the bands than I am in squats, though pushups with it I think might benefit me LOL! I'm seeing refurbished and unopened in box locals selling fit or fit max. are fit and fit max the same? do you think one of the cheaper ones would work for me? I'm overweight 5'4" and currently around 250 lbs - and I was smaller when I had the ultra and found the bench wasn't as comfy though the weight limit fit! I'm still watching your videos as I just found your channel! thank you!
Thank you for the comments and question. I know I personally don't mess with the leg pulley too much because I feel a little unstable. The FIT Max was one of their limited edition models that had more increments on the tower. I just made a video talking about the anniversary model that's on sale that's basically the same package as the FIT max. The cheaper ones would still work for your bodyweight but I would suggest changing the wheels out. I'll have a video on this on sunday. If you're confident that you're going to use it, I'd opt for a FIT model over the smaller frame APEX models. You'll also have a smoother ride, they are more sturdy, and have a wider base. Hope that helps.
@@hybridresistance thank you! I bought a refurbished fit max on Ebay. Bothered me a bit knowing QVC sold it for a little less new but oh well. They couldn't tell me when they'd offer a deal again and I wanted to get started while motivated!
The best one for the money is the Gr8 flex
I agree.
I regret buying the fit 4.5 years ago maybe 5 . For the money I wish I would of seen the gr8flex. The rubber bands are better then the weight bar since you have to buy small size weights 5's or 10's and 20's or 25's reminder the bar size slot is a joke,,weights are not easy to find also you risk slamming into the floor at high incline with bigger weight, the don't advertise but I asked customer service if could use a weight vest , answer was was yes, some exercises anyway. Just my opinion.
I’m trying to decide between the G3 and G5. Will I need those 2 levels of incline over time. Planning on eventually getting the weight bar
Tough call, I'd probably go G3. Decent number of levels and if you ever want more and really like it, I'd say sell it and upgrade to a large model like the FIT when they go on sale.
Just bought a fit signature series. I’m going to buy a jump rope for cardio and be a complete home trainer. The gym and heavy weights have trashed my knees. Can’t do it anymore.
Nice. That's a solid combo.
GR8FLEX has excellent customer service. Had an issue with my bench. They replaced the bench and frame within a week.
I've been learning more about their company and I agree they are GR8!
Where does the pinnacle model from Sam's club fit in ? I have went through chemo and now have neuropathy in my feet, looking at the TG for exercise
It has the same build as the Apex models and isn't bad in my opinion. I'd just suggest a larger squat stand attachment.
Hi. I have just purchased a 2nd hand bsb1700 body sculpture. Which is similar to total gym. Do you know if/what total gym rollers and cable etc can be used on this ??? Thanks. Craig
Unfortunately I don't, I would check with Randy at HuckProducts.com who makes replacement wheels.
I was lucky and found a total gym power tower for 500 euro. As new. The only thing i did was put a couple of new rollers on it..🎉 I use the TG now for 8 years. Had an old versions GTS i previously bought for 500 euro. Sold that one for 250 and bought the "as new" TG Power Tower for 500
Very nice!
I have a Total Trainer DLX (Bayou Fitness). No longer made, but lately one roller keeps getting chewed up. I used all my spares, any suggestions?
I know amazon sells a bunch of spare rollers, but I'm not sure on those dimensions and if they would fit. You could try contacting them, I did once about their machine and they get back to you pretty fast. Otherwise I'd say to pick up the rollers on amazon and if they don't work to just return them.
Massive thanks for your fantastic comparison video and chart. Question-I am a 73 year old woman, in good shape. Using Peloton for past 2 years. Weigh now 143 pounds from 158 before. Loved Pilates in the past but too costly now. Want to include more exercise. I G2 model from Amazon a good choice for me? Is it easy to assemble as they say? Thanks in advance very much for reply.
Thanks Marilyn. Yes, I think any of the APEX models would suffice. They all come practically all assembled. You may need help just getting it out initially and for the set up, but otherwise I think you'd be good.
@@hybridresistance Thanks a million. I just got my Apex from Fed Ex-hubby assembled it. I got the 8 level model with your great help. Working out on it tomorrow with major gratitude for your advice and charts with comparison. Much appreciated and thanks a million for your reply.
Xls and fit are almost the exact same height. The levels are basically the same, of course of the fit you can be precise on level 7, on xls it’s either 5-6, no real difference in my opinion and experience. I went with XLS and bought almost all the accessories minus the roller and bike pedals and Pilates equipment, except I did go with the toe bar.
what are your thoughts about buying one used? anything you would watch out for?
Used are great, just check for glide board integrity and quality of metal work holding up. Then just replace the wheels and cables regardless to Huck Products. I'd check out this video I did on the cables here czcams.com/video/hKJGuNonlJo/video.html
Can you help me make a choice? I'm super new, first day investigating Total Gym. I'm a lady in my 50's, overweight and out of shape and want to fix that. I've watched this and a few other of your videos and feel like even the most basic model would work for me since I have nowhere to go but up. But I'm zeroing in on the G5 and the honorable mention XL7 and and possibly the XLS. Since I'm such a novice, it's all over my head, not even understanding the attachments. So can you help me deep dive into the differences between these 3 models, including not only attachments, but build quality and materials...even maybe things like comfort of bench and handles etc...basically anything you think I'd need to know.
I wouldn't recommend the XL7 because it doesn't have the option for the weight bar attachment, in case you want to get that in the future. The G5 is a better value, but if you don't mind spending a little more then, I'd go with the XLS for the more stable and smoother ride. IT's a bigger machine but that size pays off in stability and comfort. The g5 will be lighter but the rollers are a little inferior, so you'd have to potentially upgrade them down the line depending on how much use you're putting into it.
@@hybridresistance Thank you! This helps a lot. Narrowed down to the two. I do want to look into the space they take up. Your time is appreciated and I'll be watching more of your videos!
You get a used one XLS or fit real cheap people hardly used them also!
Definitely. That used market is where it's at I hear. I need to know the best source for people like me that don't use facebook marketplace.
Hi, I just saw your video. I was looking to buy a used Total Gym Power Platinum. First time buyer. Can I get your opinion on this model. I don't seem to find too much according to the picture that the seller posted. Please and thank you.
I believe that one still takes the same attachments as the new models. I can't seem to see if there's a weight bar attachment option. I guess it depends on what the cost is versus just getting a new APEX model.
Are these all of the Total Gym models? I saw one used for sale, I think it was called Platinum Plus. Could that be another machine?
These are not all of them. There's a lot that share the "Apex" frame that are just slight variations and packaged with different attachments.
which model is best for all Pilates exercises? (need special attachments?)
I'd say the Total Gym FIT would be ideal based on quality and overall functionality
Awesome video
I’m 64 never exercised and work a desk job. I need to tone and firm up. Which is the best one?
I would start with a cheaper model just to see if you will stick with it either one of the apex models such as the G3 or if you want a more durable solid ride that a FIT model would be good. Here's a link for the discounted chuck Norris one that I have, which though it's more expensive you can always take advantage of their "30 day try it for a $1" www.anrdoezrs.net/click-100402910-13904902
Which would you choose between the extreme (Costco) or XL7 (Sam's). Thanks.
Probably the XL7 based that it's on sale for $350 at sams. They both however lack the option for the weight bar attachment, but both don't look bad.
@@hybridresistance Thanks for your help and responding 👍🏼 I like the thought of the weight bar. Although I probably won’t use it for the first 6 months to a year. Just a mom ready to lose all the baby weight. 👶🏼👶🏻👶🏻😬 🥵So I was debating on a used TB Fit w/few attachments or a new XL7 with all the attachments!! Thanks again👍🏼
Trying to find info on the Total Gym SupraPRO…
Hey, I was wondering if perhaps it's possible to drill a whole from both sides of the bench for a weight bar on models that don't come with this feature initially, such as the Xtreme model. Would that work, any one has an idea?
I honestly can't comment on that. I probably wouldn't recommend it, but depending on the machine and if you think it could handle it, it might work.
I'l late on the topic but I'l considering inserting 2 wood studs between the bench and rails, with a hole for the tube. I have the cheapest bench on Amazon, so that's not a big risk ... The glide board will thus be slightly elevated, but not much, that shouldn't be too noticeable...
Damn, this company really needs to streamline their lineup…so much overlap & nit pick subtle differences between models. G8flex looks like a nice version (balance of quality & functionality), might pick one up for more of a calisthenic, outdoor workout (might modify/customize pulleys). Thanks for the breakdown graph and video Mike
No problem mark, thanks for watching.
How does the XL7 compares versus the TotalGym Fit?
The XL7 is another smaller frame model like the APEX series, but a big negative for that one is it doesn't have the weight bar attachment option. The FIT has that is a much more solid build.
That ability to be parallel to the ground on the top model is pretty cool if someone has mobility issues...and an extra 4 Gs to throw around.
I have a newer Power Tower model. The glideboard can go parallel and it has 26 levels. Not bragging but it's pretty GD amazing.
I bought it used for around $1k and it came with nearly every attachment. At $5k it's a rip off; but at $1k it's a steal.
I also have a 14000 I paid maybe $150 for and it's also pretty f'n amazing.
Basically, commercial grade models are out there cheap on the uses market and they're designed to last a lifetime.
@@keithduncan1449 That's great. Not bragging to be excited about good exercise equipment!
@@keithduncan1449 Took another look at it. Definately worth $1000.
i cant decide between the G5 or Xtreme, any help will be appreciated
G5 as the xtreme doesn’t have a weight bar option.
So my ?
The weight limit of 375
Is the max weight of the user
Right now I'm around 300 pounds and the total gym was recommended but if never had the ability to finance it until now
So being 300 pounds would the G5 be a good fit
According to the limit it should fit you well, but I would also consider this machine if you want a heavier / more sturdy machine as it's on sale right now for this color. amzn.to/3N6FJrj
I'm 6 foot 5 - which models will be okay height wise?
I'm actually going to have a video uploaded on this hopefully by tomorrow sometime. But short answer would I'd recommend the FIT, XLS, or GTS. But it is hard to fully say based on you personally.
Got my fit @ $900!!
Very nice
@@hybridresistance now I can follow you on the Fit exercises
When you adjust the level, how do you know how many pounds your lifting?
Here's a video on that czcams.com/video/oS9jMr7vgG0/video.html
@@hybridresistance Thanks Mike, your video was very helpful.
👍
How do you order it frm the philippines????
I'm not sure on that. I'm pretty sure the company gr8flex might order to other companies.
Man. Torn between the G5 and XLS
That is a tough decision. Can't go wrong with either of them. It is nice that the g5 is cheaper, lighter, and has increments. I would upgrade the wheels to "Huck Products" wheels though if you get a G5
Dude thanks so much for the quick reply. I ended up getting a factory refurbished XLS with warranty for 500.00. Getting tired of using my bowflex. Awesome channel!! Keep it up!!!
Same here. Enjoy the XLS, leaning that way myself.
I remember buying mine at dicks for $100 bucks years ago
What about the platinum plus???
I know they don't make that one anymore but it's basically an APEX G5 (small frame TG)
