Geeking out on cool shit is never “too far”. The more you geek out on something cool and techie, the better!!! Your passion is inspiring.
Those apes really grow on me. I keep coming back to this video to look at it.
Terrific vid. I built this same bike (less ape hangers) after consulting with Johnny about two months ago. This bike seems perfect for a BBSHD build, since one of the ways it saves upfront price is that the bike doesn't come with a front derailleur, which would have been removed in the ebike build process anyway. As Johnny mentioned, the bottom bracket is 100mm precisely, and I used a 100mm BBSHD. Perfect fit. Also, great chainline after install without the need for a high-tooth Lekkie Bling Ring. Ultimately I used a 40T front ring from Luna to increase the stump pulling power, and to eliminate that heinously ugly stock Bafang 46T ring. I ultimately changed the freewheel to raise the top gear so I could assist a little more at higher speeds, too. Loving it.
Where did you order your Bafang parts? I'm looking to build this bike as well.
@@JodyGates I ended up ordering everything from Luna except the battery. I ordered the battery through one of the suppliers Johnny turned me on to: Unit Pack Power Battery (UPP) through Amazon.
Love the video. I have the same bike and got the same components without the ape hangers. Did a conference call with Johnny before I purchased the components. I highly recommend paying for his advice. Love the way it turned out. Thanks Johnny.
Can you give me the list of things I need to convert my same bike . Without the ape bars
Thanks Doug. Still looking for the info please
The frame is actually made by Giant. Thanks for this video, I found this prepping to do the same thing to mine (less the hangers).
Nice choice on the bike! Great conversion quality! Spot on why the hill climb failed, no fault of the BBSHD, it's powerhouse.
epic build ! love the ape hangers
I just did a build with this bike for $1600 (gotta find those craigslist deals) and I put my old Shimano hydraulic brakes, a 135mm suspension fork in it by 3d printing a crown rac, and base dang I love this bike. Got the Luna bbshd 100mm bottom bracket (with one 5mm spacer) with 1500W continuous output with 2×[52v 19.4Ah] batteries and a 12-32T cassette with the Luna eclipse 42T front. I measured an applied torque of 168Nm and a peak of 186Nm +/- 4Nm. Truly an awesome bike! My advice though it's to get spacers because you will need them!
Followed your advice, and oh man thank you!
If anyone is curious, I get about 51kph Max on flat ground, avg of 48kph top speed across medium to high charge with an avg of 80Nm of torque at this speed. Truly a hill climbing champ that you can still ride on the road
I did the same thing with a SIKK bike and I love it 52v 1000watt motor on it
Enjoying videos Johnny looking forward to meeting you! Jesse
Great videos!
Great bike!
Love the ape hangers!
Love the fat tires on the costco bike. While the ape hangers handle bars are cool looking, they're a bit too high to be practical mixed use riding. You just converted my Trek Marln 7 and I love it !!! I want to add a little wider tires, but noticed front rim is not centered on front forks due to brake caliper assembly being up close to the fork and wheel aligned to that side. Any suggestions on how to move the brake caliper assembly further in to allow front rim to be more centered between the forks?
I checked Cosco online and not seeing this bike. But if you can get that for that price right now, that's a great deal! Shift sensor is a game changer, I put one on cause of one of your builds. I feel comfortable loaning my bike out to someone and they wont destroy the chain/gears. Cool build!
uncle dan here hey man can you help me get those handlebars? hope you are well. this killer dude onto deck and honest.
They seem to go in and out of stock. I got one a couple of months ago. Keep checking. Delivery was just a couple of days.
I think Costco has a lot of seasonal items- and this may have been a spring/early summer item. Also might be what Paul said... could come back into stock.
@@JohnnyNerdOut yea they have had it off and on for at least 3 years now. Used to be $299 with the same components! I wish I had gotten mine then!
Great Video!!! Thanks for the content. Does anybody know the rear hub spacing on this bike? 170mm, 190mm???? Also the spoke count on the rear hub? Thanks
Nice. Looks like an old school chopper
I built the same bike. 1000w, 52v 20ah and installed a 36t Lekkie chain wheel on the front. It is a beast.
can you help build me one please??
How was the chain line with the 36T? And do you have a 28T rear?
@@Hybrid600 The chain line is great on the Northrock XCOO but on the XC27 you will need to have a chainring with at least 5/8 off set. I had a 42t chainring to start on the XCOO and it had no offset. It worked great but wanted a smaller gear up front so I went with a 36t. Still does 31mph.
@@donstaggs3827 any special parts needed to change the BBSHd to 36t? Thanks.
@@amateurbiggamehunter7691 Nope, just order one for a Bafang. I will say that the smaller the sprocket the less offset that you will get because of the diameter of the motor.
I hear you about that 450 bucks. I got a Rockhopper for 454 bucks. Sweet and I’m just about done with it. I’ll show it off when it’s done.
Can I use the stock stem and put a BMX handle bar?
What is the distance between the pedal cranks on the BBSHD 120mm? I want to make sure the cranks don’t hit the chainstays
i just bought the same bike today for $200. Previous owner rode it like 3 times. It's brand spanking new. Gonna convert it as well. How did the chain line work out with the bbshd? My other bike is horrible with chainline and the bbshd.
Johnny, I just bought this bike and want to do this build but need more low end torque for hauling gear and game and hill climbing. If I go for a 36t chainring or different rear gear set up, do I still get the 120mm bracket motor? What rear gear set up should I go with if I add a front 36t to ing? Thanks.
Hey Johnny i got a question i dont know if you could help. So i got a bbshd on a specialized frame and yesterday i put the bike in my car and it fitted okay in the car but now it is not working. I really dont know why it could be maybe all the weight distribution was on the crankarms. I dont feel the motor cogging when rolling backward and the chain does not spin when crankarm is spinned backwards. I build the bike 2 days ago and it worked perfectly before this episode?
Lekkie arrived this morning, so after spending shit loads of cash and time tryna do it my way, looks like you win this round Johnny
😎
@@JohnnyNerdOut like i said Wiseguy, you may have won this one but let's see who's laughing when i tattoo myself wi one of your t-shirts and save myself 20 bucks
@@jolive3743 I feel half complimented and half scared 🤔
Truly enjoy your videos i want to get a E-bike i think it’s going to be the wave of the future hopefully I’ll get in touch with you soon maybe have you built me one I’m mechanical challenge
@JohnnyNerdOut, Great looking bike! How tall are the apes?
how high are the ape handlebars & what model version are the ape handle bars
I use shimano xt cassettes on the back of my mid drive fatbike. With 26 tooth front .
I have ripped Chinese cassettes apart.
Shimano makes a 34 tooth rear freewheel that is reasonably priced mega range.majoity of econo bikes use freewheel. I used one with excellent results before I switched to a framed fat rear wheel with cassette.
I like the high rise bars. There are a million companies selling brake cable and housing which I'll need to reach all the way up there. Any recommendations?
Jag wire
@JohnnyNerdOut, Threadless stem extender? How tall?
Do you by chance have a video on reprogramming a bbs HD
Not yet
If you where to set up the throttle to have full power in all settings, is there a better throttle unit that could give you better control than the stock bafang unit? Great Build!
I've found the universal throttles to not have as much modulation as the left/right handed ones. Maybe its just me as I haven't done any investigating yet.
@@JohnnyNerdOut do you have any videos on how to change the BBSHd chain ring?
@@amateurbiggamehunter7691 no but it’s easy. Just remove the bolts holding it on and the pedal. It should slide off around the crank arm and the new one should slide on the same way.
@@JohnnyNerdOut thanks. I bought the xcoo per out last consult but saw your video about gear changes needed. I’ll book another consult as I want to make sure I order the right items to change the front and rear gears and if changing to 36t, should I still order the 120 bshdd etc.
an you give me the list of things I need to convert my same bike . Without the ape bars
Thanks Doug. Still looking for the info please
Everything is listed in the description 👍
Love your great work and recommend you to my friends. One important note to notch it up... You rightly described this bike and it's purpose as a cruiser, however the set up ended up for speed due to the gear ratio on the bike and say if you change the gears and do this and do that....... That's why the client brought the bike to you, if they were handy you would not have the bike. I really appreciate your channel and only wanted to mention this as sometimes another perspective helps and I have many times missed important things and learnt from them and do want people to advise me but preferably in private so Sorry. Cheers
I watched an e bike video a couple weeks ago, 3 ebikes and all the forks were on backwards. Don't know why.
Nice build. What did the total component costs come to on that bike? How hard was it to extend the cables, i.e. brakes, derailer, throttle, etc?
About $1200. Not hard at all.
@@JohnnyNerdOut is that battery available on your site? Which one is it in your site? Ready to place an Order with you for motor and all parts.
I have a fat tire bike with 13.5" hangers. Will I have to buy extension cables for the throttle?
Most likely
That's almost exactly like the fat bike i have that i discussed with you.
For a little person with long arms?
I wonder if yours has a different set of gears than mine did. Mine I think would climb that no issue though mine is a Luna with hotrod settings. But I also can't quite get to 35, I top out at a gps confirmed 33. Perhaps I will count the gears next time I am in the garage.
Also I got the 100 mm kit because I didn't want to deal with spacers. Have always had issues with things coming loose with them. This thing fits like a glove. Hope I don't decide to upgrade the frame!
Got ridding just means it isn’t limited to 750w, but uses the full 30 amps. All mine do too. If I put a smaller chain ring up front it would climb it no problem
@@JohnnyNerdOut yea, next step will be an ASI controller from High Voltage. That will take a new battery as it will pull about 50 amps. But got to get back to work first.
Hello there great bike great build I have a cube Hyde Pro with Big Apple tyres looking at turning into an ebike what do you recommend it is a 29 same kind of performance as this bike your videos are superb awesome thank you
Bbshd and a 52v battery 👍
@@JohnnyNerdOut hello thanks for your reply do you have any contact details so we could talk Messenger
@@mrhappy5265 you can book a consultation via my website @johnnynerdout.com 👍
Cool bike. Have you ever built a recumbent bike?
Yes
Conversely, on the road, that set up gives you a lot more useful gears. Let's face it, you aren't going to do squat off road with those ape hangers.
As for the brakes, I wonder if old fashioned "Travel Agents" could be modified to work? They really help when I convert long cable rear brakes on bikes like The Townie.
I'm curious why you would want travel agent style brakes, are they lower maintenance than a disc brake? Do they stop better?
@@walkerskii most bikes didn't come with disk brake mounts and disk brakes do weigh between two and four pounds more than rim. There are more reasons, but you get the idea. Travel Agents just increase the power applied to the rim brakes.
How do I book a consultation? Looking to build a bmx bike with a bafang. Thanks in advance!

Nice video, but that seat looks more like a torture device
Im thinking about taking a 26" beach cruiser 5 or 6 speed with 3 piece crank on it, thinking about putting front & back electric hub , 2 controllers , 2 batteries , 2 displays , 2 thumb throttles side by side with a mount that is mounted to both thumb to wear when throttling one they both throttle together, so with the peddle assist, im questioning this , can i run 2 peddle assist to only one magnet disc , one on top and one on bottom of the magnet disc , would it work or would it create a problem ????
Do you have coaster brakes? If so, a bafang won’t work. Have to go tongshen or hub motor
@@JohnnyNerdOut
No im not gonna go with bafang if i am to do this , and if im gonna go with 5 or 6 speed it wouldn't b coaster brake, a hub in front on the forks and a rear hub , not a mid drive , just wondering if one magnet disc would work for both peddle assist, a few inches away from each other to one magnet disc ,
@@rickp7683 should be ok 🤷♂️ maybe just split the single PAS signal to both destinations?
@@JohnnyNerdOut
When the time comes to where i do it, im gonna try it separate first and see how it goes, just don't want to fry anything, controller or Hall sensors , thank you ,
Have you shipped to Texas yet ? I wonder how much it would cost you to ship to me here.
Yes. Depends on what you order, but pretty standard shipping costs
Johnny, do you know if bbs02 and bbshd are going to remain in production? Thanks!
They have told me yes they will
@@JohnnyNerdOut Thanks 😊
Does bike have a freewheel or cassette
Looks like freewheel according to da internetz
do you think the whale shark 48v 24.5 amp hour battery by bafang would fit inside this frame?
The one by Bafang is a 19ah and should fit. Do you mean the company that calls themselves Bafang direct USA? 😀 but yes that should also fit.
Yeah they call it a whale shark. It used to be 24.5 but now they make it as a 20.3 . I already have the 24.5 amp hour and a bbshd on a super 73 frame but im thinking of swapping that motor and battery over to this frame if it would fit
I built a hub motor bike like that.
Hey Johnny...what did it cost to convert this bike the way you did it...i wanna do the same to mine..thanks Harold
Around $1200
@@JohnnyNerdOut That doesn't include the bike. With bike it's closer to $1800 with shift sensor, programming cable, and required tools.
Built the same bike after watching your stuff. You are my hero. I love my XC00BBSHD!!!
Which would you recommend: this Costco bike or the Walmart Mongoose Dolomite ALX? Yeah the ALX is more expensive, but it's aluminum.
I see the Costco is aluminum too. Costco is $500 vs. the ALX is $600. Which would be better? I do like that the ALX is a 120mm.
Maybe a slight edge to the ALX
Does the Jumbo Shark 52V 20ah battery fit the Northrock XC00?
I used that battery, but it was a serious PITA to get it mounted. It barely fits inside the triangle, and only one water bottle bolt hole can be used, and even then you'll need to drill a custom hole through the battery mounting base. That can secure the bottom of the mounting base but the top has to be held by wire tie or something. I got it in there, and maybe it was worth it because I like the range, but I've told others that I'm not sure I'd do that a second time.
@@don.newlon Wow that sounds like hard work. Can you still manage to remove the battery to recharge? And what bike/size frame did you install that in?
@@JoshuasTejas I just charge it on the bike, which was always my intention anyway, but a PSA that the half-inch or so of vertical movement required to slide the battery off the base is pretty difficult to create and a bit of a wrestling match. The 20ah battery is that tight.
How much are your parts. Mid drive and battery. Not labor
About $1200 for this one
Do you sell premade bikes made by you if so send me a link please 🙌🏽
$500 at Costco now.
450 plus what you did equal to how much

I'm always eyeballing Craigslist for good deals. I found a specialized fat bike for $300. I don't think the owner knew what he had.
This happens a lot! I love hanging out on Craigslist for steals like this.
The customer brought this bike to you? It is no longer available at Costco
Yes, I know, I've been recommending it and then saw they dont have it anymore!
@@JohnnyNerdOut Yes, I bought one 2 weeks ago and now it is not listed but I did purchase a few XC27 models for $350.00 in the store two weeks ago. It is not a fat bike but it does have 2.2" tires on it. Also has front shocks. It is aluminum and is a very nice bike. I installed a 1000w BBSHD, 52v, 20ah battery. It is a better ride and $100 cheaper with front shocks. (You will need the 68mm lower instead of the 100mm)
