Additionally, you could cut out some discs of the wood board, stain them, and then glue them onto the top of the bottle lids for even easier reference.

When using these stains you will want to make a stand to keep the bottle from tipping over. Just think how much fun you would have when the bottle tips over.
I've been known to knock over a pot of ink wash in my day :D

I would use the daubers that most people would use to stain leather. They are cheap and can be thrown away after use. As for other colors, would it not be possible to make custom stains of other colors with an alcohol base? This might be useful if you need colors like green, blue, purple or red for a stain color.
