I would suggest finging a local running group to train with. Most offer group long runs with pacers along with a track/speed workouts. I would bet you would find runners training for the Austin marathon with a goal of qualifing for Boston. Keep up the oustanding work and suffer on!

Yikes... 90 days to go sub 3, taking over an hour off your PR. That's a 6:50 pace for 26.2 miles. I'm rooting for you, but that's very lofty. You're not taking a post ironman break and are ramping up your miles very quickly. It may be prudent to replace some of your "junk miles" with cycling. It will accomplish the same base fitness and endurance objective without adding injury potential. You're going to have to really focus on speed work. You almost have to be running a 5 or so minute open mile or 16-17 minute 5Ks to have the confidence in holding that 6:50 pace. I can definitely see sub 3:30..BQ is really tough. You have the work ethic and drive for sure and I think you can hit it, i just don't know if 90 days is enough time. You're already starting to break down with injury (and understandably so). I think you're doing everything you can to make it possible but make sure you take pride in your gains even if you don't qualify. You will PR by a long shot for sure and you've accomplished so much in a short period of time.

@@robr7200 his competitive time was around 4 hours but I believe he has done better than that in training, he was also at his peak weight for his last race. That said, sub 3 in 90 days is probably not in the cards. I think sub 3:30 on a timed course is a good goal. 3:10 I think is as fast as it gets if he stays healthy and that's probably going to be at 185 lbs and lots of speed work.

I full heartedly think you could pull this off dude. Your a fricken beast. Just keep in mind not all people who qualify for Boston are allowed to register. In fact last year they turned away over 7000 people who had qualified. Your time to qualify is 3 hrs but if you actually want to lock in your spot you need to come in at least 4-5 mins faster then that. Google Boston marathon qualifying times. There are a bunch of articles about this. You don't want to put all that effort in and qualify only to have the Boston marathon say it's a no go. Just a little tip to keep in mind bro. Anyways pumped to watch your journey. The Ironman pre series was the tits. Very very well done.

I'm calling it right now, he will run a 3:19-3:23 for Austin. I don't see him sub 3 until he gets to about 168-172lbs. 195 is way too heavy to be running 6 min miles. He needs to keep in mind, to BQ he needs to be in 1:24-1:25 Half shape thats not happening anytime soon until this guy drops a lot of his upper body.

    • @benjaminfarias6451
      @benjaminfarias6451 Před 4 lety +9

Will he BQ? Absolutely not ... he doesn't have enough time to develop that sort of improvement in speed and stamina .... I disagree with your stance on the weight issue .... although carrying a large amount of muscle mass makes it harder it can be done ... @ 6 feet tall and 185 pounds I ran a 2:54 BQ .... I feel like its achievable for this guy but he probably needs another year or two of speed work and high mileage

    Brisket tips:
    275 on the traeger
Get the brisket as cold as possible without freezing before hand
Spray every 10 internal degrees after 150
Spray and wrap with PARCHMENT paper when internal temp hits 180
Pull off traeger when internal hits 200
Should only take about 4 hours, will have a deep dark ring, great bark, and be very moist.
Btw, butcher paper is parchment paper with a wax lining. Don't put wax on your meat dog.

Then I got the bright idea to race a marathon on a Sunday, run another marathon distance on thursday and then a half marathon distance on Sunday. And now here I am sitting here injured with hamstrings that the physical therapist described as “tight as a violin”. hmmm, dunno if I'd be foam rolling my itb. For prevention, the best advice would be:
    1. analyse your gait, you might need insoles to correct a gait issue
    2. flexibility, do stretches that target the itb
    3. strengthen leg muscles, using a resistance band do "clamshells" and side leg raises to strengthen the hips

Just watched "The Game Changers" on Netflix and now I'm really thinking a lot about plant based nutrition. What is your opinion on that?
Love your channel, keep it up!

Nick...I think you are awesome and tough as hell. I really do. I don't doubt your ability for a second, however, I have been around weightlifting and running my entire life. I have completed several ultra-marathons and am an avid weightlifter. The only way you are going to qualify for Boston, based on your body type and previous marathon times, is to lose weight (a lot of it) or use EPO. I don't see any other way. I think you can definitely PR though. Good luck!

James Cox sub 5 hours with NO training? Do you mean no specific training for that marathon or no running? Because if you weren’t even a runner I call shenanigans.

This is a really bad idea. Running a full without training in a great way to injure yourself.

I ran my first marathon at about the same time and basically "trained" by running 6 miles a day 5 days a week for two months. (There's better plans out there). I've gotten a lot smarter now (thanks youtube) about training and heartrate based training. I'm training for my next one now.

Every other runner loves 40-50 degrees F. More than 60 feels too hot when running. For long distances I love winter running and will run in the single digits (just not below 0F). People warm up from the inside out (we are warm blooded). Strength training is important to prevent injuries, but you need to ease up on power lifting. Eating heavy meats is also not great if you want to run long distances. I would switch to eggs and veggie based proteins for training. It's easier to digest and you feel a lot better when running.

Hey nick, you should look into the Marc Pro to help out with your recovery protocol. Many pro athletes use it, you can listen to episode #34 of the Elite Baseball Development Podcast with Gary Reinl to learn all about it.

It’s good to finally see NB transition from a Fitness “Influencer” to an actual fitness athlete. I can only take so many fitness “influencers” who are just average at what they do physically but really really good at selling mediocre clothes and workout programs to impressionable teenagers.

Dont roll the ITB!! Typically ITB issues are (especially in high volume runners) are actually caused by a tight TFL in your hip. Hitting that with a theragun or a lax ball will do you good, it WILL not feel comfortable when you're on your TFL but it will work wonders.

Been a follower for awhile and love your content. I would just be careful with the training. Being a bigger runner myself with a BQ, I've been injured from ramping up my training to 60 miles a week without a good base. You might feel great running 50-60 miles a week for a few weeks, but keep in mind injury can always strike. Maybe work your mileage up rather than start at a high level. Just a thought.
