I secretly believe he only does these endurance events to avoid leg day...
I would suggest finging a local running group to train with. Most offer group long runs with pacers along with a track/speed workouts. I would bet you would find runners training for the Austin marathon with a goal of qualifing for Boston. Keep up the oustanding work and suffer on!
It's insane how much I look forward to your videos.
Edit: in your next video maybe you could cover your stretches, foam rolling, and recovery/preventive maintenance etc... routine.
blp1884
YES! That’s what I was thinking.
blp1884 recovery and maintenance are huge. I always used to ignore this as high level all state athlete in high school but as I became and adult and tried to maintain my body the same way I have definitely had to add adaptive measures in order to prevent injury.
YES! I would love to see what you do for a de-load week after something like an Iron Man, and other types of recovery you utilize
Try using root beer (instead of apple juice) on your next brisket. I’ve used it on ribs and they ended up being incredible.
Yikes... 90 days to go sub 3, taking over an hour off your PR. That's a 6:50 pace for 26.2 miles. I'm rooting for you, but that's very lofty. You're not taking a post ironman break and are ramping up your miles very quickly. It may be prudent to replace some of your "junk miles" with cycling. It will accomplish the same base fitness and endurance objective without adding injury potential. You're going to have to really focus on speed work. You almost have to be running a 5 or so minute open mile or 16-17 minute 5Ks to have the confidence in holding that 6:50 pace. I can definitely see sub 3:30..BQ is really tough. You have the work ethic and drive for sure and I think you can hit it, i just don't know if 90 days is enough time. You're already starting to break down with injury (and understandably so). I think you're doing everything you can to make it possible but make sure you take pride in your gains even if you don't qualify. You will PR by a long shot for sure and you've accomplished so much in a short period of time.
Everything Is Photogenic yeah agree, I’m definitely rooting for him but if he can actually pull it off in that amount of time I’d be super impressed.
Another arm chair expert.
On his last marathon I think he mis-prepped a day or two leading up to the marathon, but that's just off the top of my head.
Everything Is Photogenic 16 minute 5ks. Yikes
JJ King with his verbiage I would be very surprised if he hasn’t ran a couple marathons himself. Just in case you where indexing nick bare is not the only person in the world who has ever ran a marathon.
Stand straight, cross your feet, and touch your toes. Switch sides and repeat for a nice IT band stretch.
Really wished you used Strava
Yeah, strava rules
Same here!!! Some would even pose the question.... "If you run and it is not on Strava, did you even run?"
But seriously right now, #NickBare4Strava2019
Jordan Rundell facts 😂
Do you have a strava account we can follow your progress on?
I'd hop on this too!!
I’d follow as well!
Me too!
please please please get a strava!
would love to see a strava!
So ran my first half marathon this year and looking to do my first marathon next year thanks for the inspiration
I think you will need to lose more mass to qualify as it will make it much easier on your joints and you will become a much more efficient runner with 15-20 less lbs
Qualifying for Boston is tough. I didn't watch the entire video did he happen to sat what his marathon time is at right now?
@@robr7200 his competitive time was around 4 hours but I believe he has done better than that in training, he was also at his peak weight for his last race. That said, sub 3 in 90 days is probably not in the cards. I think sub 3:30 on a timed course is a good goal. 3:10 I think is as fast as it gets if he stays healthy and that's probably going to be at 185 lbs and lots of speed work.
Look up an Instagram account called irun26.2 or something along those lines he is a big dude and runs like 2:35
Chris Vega yep this dude is fast! (And he is also coaching me to run sub 3h to qualify for Boston!)
@@chrisvega2383 He's at least 20 pounds lighter though.
Super excited for this series. I’m signed up for my second half marathon this may 2020 and my first full marathon in October 2020.
Look forward to following your journey, Nick. In the several months I have been following you, I have learned so much and found so much motivation and inspiration in your videos. I sincerely thank you for that. I have no doubts and complete faith you will achieve your goal. Thanks as always for your service. Cheers, Scott
I love this content of business updates and training. Exactly what my life focus is right now. Thanks for this great content nick!
As a startup founder, I love seeing the behind the scenes on the business side just as much as the fitness and nutrition
You got this Nick! I’m doing my first half marathon this January and I’m super stoked! I hope to end up doing the Boston marathon one day! Keep up the awesome videos, you’re such an inspiration to me! Keep on being awesome👍
Idk about anyone else but nick I appreciate your sweet edits and transitions!!!! You are and Inpiration 😊
I’m sitting in the hotel, leaving for basic training in the morning. Gonna miss the videos these next few months. Keep it up Nick!
Good luck bro we all know you got this!!
I use feetures too! Love those and even use it on a day to day
Good luck Nick. I just ran my first ever marathon last Sunday. I ran 3:15.05 and got a BQ for my age group. I can’t wait to run at Boston in 2021.
really an inspiration for experimenting with the limits of one's performance. As always, love your videos.
I’ll be excited to see more content come out when your videographer gets there!
Awesome to see you continue to challenge yourself!
Steph being that comfortable and natural on camera is mind blowing.
Wow that's real tough goal but that's not stopping you from going for it! That's the real takeaway for me keep doing ya thing man and good luck!
- Butcher paper wrap
- Apple juice spray
- 203° finish temp
Shout out to Aaron Franklin's book? Or are all Texans gifted this knowledge?🤔
Best of luck on the prep! Liked and sub'd w/ notifications!
Prove all of them wrong nick , let’s see you hit that sub 3 hour ! I’ll be running a marathon in March , you inspire me so much
Great choice in following Pfitzinger's plan. His book (Advanced Marathoning) changed my whole approach to marathon training. Also, I agree about Feetures - by far the best running sock I've tried (get the max cushion version if you like a soft feel). Balega makes goods socks, too.
Good stuff man- found your account after completing a half iron distance tri-
Full Iron is next and I love the documentation of it all- you've motivated me to do the same.
New Sub! Loving your content man thanks for all the hard work!
Started watching you because of your Ironman series. Surprised your marathon is on the same day as mine! Good luck on your BQ attempt!
Thanks for inspiration! Just signed up for the Austin marathon
Good luck Nick qualifying for Boston is hard but you got this
I've had many IT band issues and rolling has been the best thing for me.You are extremely fit so I think you can hit a BQ but you are def gonna need to get your form a little bit more dialed to be able to run 6:50 pace.Doing strides has really helped my form. Also doing stretches that are specific to stride length may help you get a lot of speed and form improvements quickly.I can't wait to follow this journey as I myself am on the same journey.Good luck!
I just recently ran the Army 10 miler, I had the same pain as you in the IT band but it progressively got worse. I eventually got it looked at and hand a tear in my IT band
I full heartedly think you could pull this off dude. Your a fricken beast. Just keep in mind not all people who qualify for Boston are allowed to register. In fact last year they turned away over 7000 people who had qualified. Your time to qualify is 3 hrs but if you actually want to lock in your spot you need to come in at least 4-5 mins faster then that. Google Boston marathon qualifying times. There are a bunch of articles about this. You don't want to put all that effort in and qualify only to have the Boston marathon say it's a no go. Just a little tip to keep in mind bro. Anyways pumped to watch your journey. The Ironman pre series was the tits. Very very well done.
I think this marathon goal is going to be harder than the Ironman!
Get after it!
I'm calling it right now, he will run a 3:19-3:23 for Austin. I don't see him sub 3 until he gets to about 168-172lbs. 195 is way too heavy to be running 6 min miles. He needs to keep in mind, to BQ he needs to be in 1:24-1:25 Half shape thats not happening anytime soon until this guy drops a lot of his upper body.
Will he BQ? Absolutely not ... he doesn't have enough time to develop that sort of improvement in speed and stamina .... I disagree with your stance on the weight issue .... although carrying a large amount of muscle mass makes it harder it can be done ... @ 6 feet tall and 185 pounds I ran a 2:54 BQ .... I feel like its achievable for this guy but he probably needs another year or two of speed work and high mileage
I disagree regarding the weight. I’m 205 lbs and just ran a half marathon in 1h25 and I also plan to qualify for Boston early February
@@benjaminfarias6451 He just did an Ironman pleaseeeee im begging you dont under estimate the guy!
@@aFecTzSniping I'm not saying that performing an Iron Man is not an impressive feat ... it really is amazing ... what I'm saying is his goal for improvement is not realistic under the timeframe that he has .... he may BQ at some point but it will just take more time .... I dont think viewers really understand how far he really is from this goal .... I hate to be negative but as an experienced runner, it's just the truth
@@briceroques do you weight train concurrently? i have lost a lot of upper body muscle mass while cranking up the miles (ultra marathon training). I am having a hard time keeping arm and chest mass. i feel like no matter how much i lift and eat, when i go out on long rungs it just melts off...
Brisket tips:
275 on the traeger
Get the brisket as cold as possible without freezing before hand
Spray every 10 internal degrees after 150
Spray and wrap with PARCHMENT paper when internal temp hits 180
Pull off traeger when internal hits 200
Should only take about 4 hours, will have a deep dark ring, great bark, and be very moist.
Btw, butcher paper is parchment paper with a wax lining. Don't put wax on your meat dog.
According to the Mcmillan calculator you probably need to do the mile in less than 5:20, or 5k in less than 18:28 to even have a shot at sub 3 hour. those shorter distances can thus be used a Good checkpoints.
Awesome video Nick!! The Pfitzinger Marathon Training Program seems like it will be the perfect fit for yourself and your goals! I wish you the best of luck throughout your training, as I know you will dominate each and everyday leading up to February 16th! "Embrace the Suck!" Keep it up Nick!! I also wanted to let you know that you have been quite the inspiration day in and day out! I recently just bought a pair of "Hoka" training shoes, which make it seem as if I am "running on a cloud!" Thanks for the idea of looking into these!!
I never stretched, just hit the road and shredded the miles. Then I got the bright idea to race a marathon on a Sunday, run another marathon distance on thursday and then a half marathon distance on Sunday. And now here I am sitting here injured with hamstrings that the physical therapist described as “tight as a violin”. As soon as this is healed up (via stretching) I’ll be stretching the right way moving forward. At this point I’m just trying to get fixed up in time to make the ATX full. But I ain’t worried! 😎👍🏻
I just found out like two weeks a go running whit a metronome is such a game changer
I believe you can do it Nick. 👍
Please talk about your stretching/ recovery next video, I’m really intrigued with what you do recovery wise
hmmm, dunno if I'd be foam rolling my itb. For prevention, the best advice would be:
1. analyse your gait, you might need insoles to correct a gait issue
2. flexibility, do stretches that target the itb
3. strengthen leg muscles, using a resistance band do "clamshells" and side leg raises to strengthen the hips
ITB - had issues myself. Usually lazy glue or glute medium. Gotta do clamshells and banded monster walks to work lateral hip and glute stability. Ironman training is all one direction with biking and run. Good luck!
I started marathon training today. Using a different system but for newbies.
Good work brother.
I'm 18 training for Boston as well. My qualifier is the first Sunday in May 2019 and current PR is 3:39:06 for a full and 1:24:32 for a half. Good luck with your training :) At least there is no snow in Texas ;)
*May 2020
Bro you need at least 3 pairs of running shoes for keep em in rotation, your training and your body will thank you for it .. and pair of Nikes Vapor Flys or a carbon plate shoe of your preference for the big day. Good luck! 🤘
I agree with Ben. You definitely need at least one other pair of shoes to rotate with. You'll wear your shoes out fast. Also rotating will help the cushion in the shoe bounce back.good luck on the training.
Agreed. The EVA needs to bounce back, so at least a few pairs.
What inspires me about you Nick is your forward thinking process and your plan to execute on it. Do you think being in the military helped bring that out of you or were always like that? Keep up the great work brother.
Get on strava Señor, great way to track your progress and have folks follow along.
Really inspiring! If you can qualify for Boston while maintaining that much muscle that would be an amazing accomplishment. I'm 25 weigh 160 LBs, and my best time is 3:20 - toughest challenge ever to hit sub 3
My only advice would be eat more fruits / veggies to feel wayyyy lighter
stocked for you! Go get it
Good luck with qualifying for Boston! And curious what you will say about your first marathon-pace workout... Huge respect for your attitude!!
REGARDING SMOKING THE BRISKET!!!!!
Instead of wrapping it in the butchers paper wrap it in foil but make a pocket in the bottom and fill that with Appel juice or whatever you are smoking it with, this will help keep the moisture high and keep it juicy.
Bro. You’re going to have to run way faster than sub 3 to get into Boston. They’ll take your application at dub 3, but they drop the standard every year. (Example this year is that the cutoff was 2:58:something). Don’t think 2:59:59 is going to get you in.
Go bro!
Let’s do it 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
I’m doing Boston 2020. Hope it’s going to be great, good luck to you
Can’t recommend getting a full gait analysis enough! Lingering pain is often a sign or poor running mechanics. A gait analysis will help improve your efficiency, and help with the increased load.
Get on Strava!! We would all love to connect with your training there
You should test your lifting strengths (1RM for you main lifts) now that your post-Ironman!
Tell us about your cross training and run specific strength training you are incorporating! Maybe in the next video
Can you show us more of your recovery/injury prevention process? Would help a lot
First one to like. Good luck on training for Duncan bc
Nick, have you considered talking to a run coach like you did for ironman prep. That volume is crazy, goodluck bro
Nick you might want to log in how many miles you have on your shoes. Those rincons only last about 400 miles if that because they’re a lighter shoe. Also, you might want to see if you pronate to see if you need to be put in a stability shoe. Most running speciality shoes will last you anywhere between 400-600 miles.
Skinny boy! You look great, Nick!
A quick 6 mile run...
You are an absolute inspiration. I generally go for 3.5 mile runs and I feel exhausted afterwards, but its improved from last month's 2 mile runs. Hope one day to casually say I can go for six miles runs lol
Trust me, you'll be running that in no time
Super Vet just start going for more distance every time, you’ll be there soon!
It's totally achievable. Add in some cycling to build up your aerobic capacity with less impact. You can train your heart rate and then your runs are just about building specific muscular endurance.
For IT, get a lacrosse ball deep in the TFL muscle.
lets go king
Just watched "The Game Changers" on Netflix and now I'm really thinking a lot about plant based nutrition. What is your opinion on that?
Love your channel, keep it up!
Nick...I think you are awesome and tough as hell. I really do. I don't doubt your ability for a second, however, I have been around weightlifting and running my entire life. I have completed several ultra-marathons and am an avid weightlifter. The only way you are going to qualify for Boston, based on your body type and previous marathon times, is to lose weight (a lot of it) or use EPO. I don't see any other way. I think you can definitely PR though. Good luck!
Hey dad, could you walk us through your recovery? Currently training for the Chicago marathon and I’m struggling with the recovery process
Thanks for sharing! Again an intriguing challenge, but more difficult than the journey to IM.It is going to be very, very tough 14 weeks to achieve the
good luck Nick, i just ran my first marathon (signed up 36 hrs before) with no training.... ran a 4:57. had a great pace until mile 18 came and it felt like i busted both of my hamstrings
James Cox sub 5 hours with NO training? Do you mean no specific training for that marathon or no running? Because if you weren’t even a runner I call shenanigans.
This is a really bad idea. Running a full without training in a great way to injure yourself.
I ran my first marathon at about the same time and basically "trained" by running 6 miles a day 5 days a week for two months. (There's better plans out there). I've gotten a lot smarter now (thanks youtube) about training and heartrate based training. I'm training for my next one now.
That's so fucking stupid
Couch to marathon 1.5 days. Nice bro but not very quick. I could probably walk a 5 hr marathon
Sounds like a solid plan! Just make sure to lessen to your body.
a chiropractor was key for me with it band issues
Every other runner loves 40-50 degrees F. More than 60 feels too hot when running. For long distances I love winter running and will run in the single digits (just not below 0F). People warm up from the inside out (we are warm blooded). Strength training is important to prevent injuries, but you need to ease up on power lifting. Eating heavy meats is also not great if you want to run long distances. I would switch to eggs and veggie based proteins for training. It's easier to digest and you feel a lot better when running.
Hey nick, you should look into the Marc Pro to help out with your recovery protocol. Many pro athletes use it, you can listen to episode #34 of the Elite Baseball Development Podcast with Gary Reinl to learn all about it.
You should look into getting a stryd Power meter for your running training
It’s good to finally see NB transition from a Fitness “Influencer” to an actual fitness athlete. I can only take so many fitness “influencers” who are just average at what they do physically but really really good at selling mediocre clothes and workout programs to impressionable teenagers.
Jay Paul III are you talking about Maxx Chewning?? cause i can’t recall another fitness youtuber that sells candy lol
BPN looking gooD! Steph must've designed the interior... Ope yeah she talks about it lmao
You should try spartans
You want the results Nick - Recovery is gonna be the key to you successfully qualifying - foam rolling , ice baths they are the 1%ers that are key mate
'We'll start with a nice and easy 6 mile run..' What a beast..I'm over here barely able to do a flight of stairs lmao
perfect
wow. Boston marathon
Dont roll the ITB!! Typically ITB issues are (especially in high volume runners) are actually caused by a tight TFL in your hip. Hitting that with a theragun or a lax ball will do you good, it WILL not feel comfortable when you're on your TFL but it will work wonders.
It's an extremely challenging goal. You have to loose serious weight, gain a lot of speed and improve your technique.
nick you should try doing apft and see how good you score after all this running
Been a follower for awhile and love your content. I would just be careful with the training. Being a bigger runner myself with a BQ, I've been injured from ramping up my training to 60 miles a week without a good base. You might feel great running 50-60 miles a week for a few weeks, but keep in mind injury can always strike. Maybe work your mileage up rather than start at a high level. Just a thought.
Can you go over all your gear? Watch, shirts, shoes, etc etc?
I'd be interested in seeing if you can keep up heavy lifting during your training. I certainly can't when I train for races.
Get a normatec for your legs to keep them healthy
Yo what watch do you use? Planning to attend my first marathon in Dec thanks for the motivation too I weight over little 200lb
Did you try sous vide cooking style yet? It will help if you are into fancy cooking.
