My car was stolen in 6 minutes flat but there's something VERY shady about the whole ordeal. Broad daylight, red, parked in the first/front handicap spot and handicap plates, and there were much nicer and newer cars to take. My rims weren't taken! All the valuables were still in it like gold and silver jewelry, several gift cards and even cash money. Upon its return to me (fyi 10 days later, 4 were spent in the impound and 4 in a parking lot) I noticed the front panel wasn't in alignment. I figured it was from the tow truck or worse it was removed to access the battery. I have a 2010 Dodge Journey and the battery is in the wheel well. Yesterday I was driving and was hearing what sounded like a rock in my tire but what I found scares the hell out of me!!! My front panel was back in perfect alignment and a brand new screw and washer matching the ones that hold the panel on was in my tire. There aren't any missing screws from the panel either, They are all there. Also my cell phones bluetooth keeps coming on by itself along with a number of other hacked like behaviors. I'm a single mom but I'm strapped at all times. What should I do? Any advice is appreciated.
I'm not gonna come right out and say it so please read between the lines on this next comment. I feel it WASN'T just some random car thief. The police were NOT cooperative and they were even called by the owner of the parking lot where it was "abandoned" just 2 days after it was stolen but instead of getting it or calling me they asked him if he had a sign posted stating no unauthorized parking. Just one reason it took 10 days to get it back. Then I was flat out lied to by both the police and tow yard about when it was found. And when I did get it it was ransacked even the ashtray had been thrown and there were cigarette butts everywhere. I feel a thief would've just looked in the ash tray and not thrown cigarette butts and ashes everywhere just to put the ash tray back where it was. Would a cocky cop be a dick and throw it everywhere? YEAH and quite frankly I feel they're the only ones who would. Especially if they weren't finding anything they thought they might find.

It most states it’s absolutely illegal. In MD if anyone is caught placing trackers on any cars, it’s considered stalking & a felony requiring a large bail to get out of jail before trial. People have been murdered by using metal car trackers stuck under wheel wells. under the seat, etc, they also were using phones tracking systems. The person must know a tracker or phone tracker is being used before anything can be placed physically or over the internet. If you find one it’s supposed to be turned in immediately & the police will decoy it for prosecution. With so many people using wifi & cellular networks it’s almost impossible to deny it when caught because the devices are linked when in the same area.
Employers have to notify anyone they hire. Car companies put in electronic trackers at 2nd hand or roadside sales & then are to remove them when the car is paid off. Most of these places will add a starter kill switch on fly by night roadside car sales so if you don’t make a payment, they can shut the car off til the payment is caught up. New loans don’t put in devices as it raises the cost of the sale & the cost can’t be passed on to the buyer in most States, yet is an option on most new cars. Rentals have trackers in case the car isn’t returned or goes missing. Those are the only legal reasons for the State I live in.

So AirTags are bluetooth devices and can be detected. Have your wife's friend open her bluetooth settings while in her car to see if a device pops up. Honestly, most hidden GPS trackers have a motion sensor that puts the device into a sleep mode when the vehicle is not moving. This occurs roughly 2-2.5 minutes after the vehicle stopped moving. SO you could drive the vehicle, park it, then quickly scan the automobile with a GPS bug sweeper to see if it picks up any real time signals. But again, GPS bug sweepers won't pick up no monthly fee trackers because they do not transmit.

Our law enforcement friends have stated repeatedly that thieves are opportunists. They commit crimes in the moment. They are not going on youtube and learning where to locate hidden GPS trackers. In fact, it would take them probably 15 minutes to do so and they won't waste that type of time scanning a vehicle.

GPS tracker detectors can only detect a real time GPS if it is actively transmitting data. Wireless GPS trackers go into a sleep mode after they are parked or about 2 minutes. This is why it is important to do a physical scan in the locations mentioned in the video about where to find a tracking device
