AMD in 2016: Hey we got a new socked called AM4.
AMD in 2023: We have another new cpu for AM4.
This is like if AM2 from 2006 had CPUs continue to release for it until 2013 and was competitive with Haswell. Imagine going from an athlon64 to a 4770k on the same socket!
AM4: "Hello, Cherie. We meet again. Is it fate? Is it meant to be? Is it written in the stars that we are destined to fraternize?"
@@c-dub8639 I have Asrock N68C-GS FX and that thing would accept any AM2, AM2+ and AM3 CPU, but also some AM3+ cpu's. So you could install a Athlon X2 3800+ from 2006 with DDR2 all the way up to a FX4300 from 2012 with DDR3. I got a Phenom X6 though because it is has 6 true cores.
The AM4 platform is like the Dodge Challenger, it's OLD but they keep making new 'models'.
The AMD CEO said during the AM5 keynote presentation that AM4 wasn't done and to expect more chips from them.
This is great news for the AM5 platform. If AMD treats AM5 with half the love they did for AM4, man.
Hope that it doesn’t take as long to make a 7600X3D
@@zeroturn7091 they'll need to accrue enough faulty 7800X3Ds for the 7600X3D to be commercially viable
Yeah hopefully AMDip actually fixes their trash architecture and fixes the memory controller and OC capability on their AM5 chips. It’s just not a good choice over intel because I don’t see any Ryzen platform running D5 8000mts and up @cl38 like me :)
4090/13900K = faster than anything AMDip could ever create. AMD is good for people who are okay with having slow systems. You know the type of people who can’t overclock and just turn on xmp and run with it without tightening timings and optimizing their hardware.
@6r3ys0n you do know that lower the cl the better , right? So what you just described here i wouldn't want that d5 for free , cl28 or nothing
@@6r3ys0n you just wait for 8000 series, apparently they're gonna have something equivalent to rtx 5110ti
Reminds me of the 1600 AF chip. Man I built so many systems with the 1600 AF when it was available. $85 for the performance of a $120 2600 🥰
I am watching this video on a 1600AF chip.
Those were the days. I remember the excitement waiting for the post in r/Buildapcsales
I handed off my 1600af to buddy still on a 8630 A couple years ago when I upgraded to a 3900x. He later upgraded his rx560 to a 6600.
I just upgraded from a 1600AF to a 5700x. Wish I waited a few more days haha
@@badatpc 5900x go by 200$ these days yknow
Great to see creative ways AMD is recycling parts. Hopefully AMD makes a profit from this and other companies can follow suit.
it dont matter.
decades ago I was part of AMI (another IC manufacture of bygone days), and we had the same opportunity to do the recycling and did so. Oddly we made more money for selling parts that were considered 'defective' from the original specification, then we made from the original chips. But as with the 5600x3d, it was a very situational. Normally lost opportunity costs make the time used to find those 'defective' chips not worth the profit that can be made in retesting and marketing the reclaimed chips.
@@quandingleberry445 h o w
@@LilTachanka greedy companies will forever be greedy companies.
They've been doing this for years. the 1600 and 3600 were "recycled" in this manner.
I think a big part of this release is to instil confidence in the longevity of the AM5 platform.
am4 not dead😃
If they get the 7800x3d breaking motherboards figured out I'm absolutely buying one
@@XGARBAGExBO2 they will just be patient
@@raven4k998bro what are these emojis, I can't find them on my mobile's keyboard.
@@XGARBAGExBO2 The 7800X3Ds aren't breaking any motherboards. The CPUs work as intended. It's some (mostly ASUS) motherboards which are frying the CPU and themselves, because they pump out of spec VSOC voltage into them.
To be fair, they did say AM4 wasn't dead when they launched AM5. They said they still had some SKU's left to release. I guess this is the first (last?). Also kind of sucks that this is a single retailer only thing, this would have been a nice CPU for my friends new budget build.
I think there just aren’t enough units in stock to be sold across different retailers.
gamers nexus made a vid about that, he claims there wasn't enough waste for it to be global launch (microcenter estimated 3-6months of supply)... and if you consider that you'd have to split whole stock to many more retailers, countries etc... then i'd expect 3-12 days max of availbility, so i kinda doubt you'd be able to get your hands on one without hunting it, and scalping would increase it to 5800x3d price most probably or something
so i think it was the best decision to be made
@@PowellCat745That's what I was thinking. It sounds like AMD was like hey we have these 5800X3D's with failed silicon... Hey Micro Center you're expanding, want an exclusive?
Yeah everyone either has forgotten or never noticed that when AM5 launched they said that AM4 wasn't done. This is the obvious result of another new AM4 CPU as it's the easy to produce CPU that fills a hole in the AM4 CPU lineup
I'm from europe, and must say I'm not salty about this. Remember the 3100 / 3300X CPUs? They were the same thing, and they sold them globally. They were sold out pretty much instantly and impossible to get, because they had the same limitation of being leftover scrap dies that didn't make it to higher bins. It makes sense for AMD to just not bother distributing them everywhere, if they can't supply enough anyways.
i am sticking with AM4 as long as i can, because i am not buying new memory just to upgrade to AM5.
New memory and a new motherboard, for potentially the chance to get a motherboard that over volts and fries your CPU
Yeah i was so close to pulling the trigger on a full am5 x3d build when they started blowing up, ended up just jamming a 5800x3d, 32gb of ddr4 which was cheap af, and a 4070ti in my am4 platform and its fukn sweet
@@DaysofKnightAsus moment
The new DDR5 ram has horrible timings.
@@davidbrennan5 Give it a few years, it'll get better. RAM improvements in clock speeds for new generations always result in shitty timings. They improve as the design improves.
DDR4 had bad timings compared to DDR3, but they slowly came down to something reasonable.
Companies frequently hold stock back specifically for warranty that they don't consider part of their sales inventory. They should have a very good idea of failure rates over the warranty period, so it should be straightforward to have enough parts on hand, especially given the effectively limited release of these.
Or they could just ship 5800X3D as a replacement part once warranty stock runs out.
Exactly what I was thinking.
If their held back units for RMAs run out of stock, they won't have trouble sending a 5800X3D out.
I had an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 that needed way too much juice to run stable and Intel Europe offered me QX9770 as a replacement. Approx. 300€ more expensive CPU for free.
If someone buys the 5600x3d and it dies then they serve it back only for amd to be like "here's more power for your troubles" would be a straight giga Chad move from AMD
Too bad it'll be nearly impossible (if not outright impossible) for people not in the US to get their hands on that chip
Better for me
I mean it’s hard enough for people in the US to get them too lol
eBay is your friend.
@@jamesm568 i don't want to spend $700 before all the import taxes (which often cost more than the product itself) for this chip

Your videos are therapy. I watch them on down time at work(blue dc ;) ). Keep doing what your doing. Your killing it!
Kind of a shame that this is such a limited launch - would've been an interesting choise for those still on AM4. I've ~just~ upgarded to 5800x3D myself, but I could see the value in this one. Oh well
If we try to keep up with all and everything of this industry we end up crazy, depressed and broke.
Be happy with the 5800x3D, bro! It's a beast!
🙌
@@marcust478 Oh I'm more than happy with it, but I have some friends who are still on AM4 (or even older) and this would've been a very compelling choise. But then again, 5600x (base one) is still a king for budget builds, so ^^
I think it would be better to switch to AM5 if you're on an older AM4 chip and looking to upgrade, just cus it's gonna be future proof
@@mikerelf I wish I waited for that chip, I upgraded to a 5900X just before the 5800X3D was launched. I'm still happy with my purchase and will probably wait another year before upgrading to AM5, maybe wait for next gen and snatch a 7900X3D used.
The fabs shoot to optimize the yields. So 5800X3Ds wafers should mostly be turned in to the intended 5800X3D CPUs as TSMC has optimized their manufacturing. They probably have low amount of usable rejected dies that could be turned in to a 5600X3D.
If the cost of the raw material going into making one of these is becoming an issue, I fully expect more of this kind of thing, and perhaps a new line of SKU and platforms and form factors to accommodate them. A whole new market of 'new' recycled SKU's.
That recycling silicon thing reminds me DREDD movie where they recycled even food.
@welchianachi7707 I mean chunky cheese did that until they got called out lol
I believe material is a fraction of price. Designers and SW engineering will be imo prevalent.
Also, I run my 5800x3d at -30 offset in PBO and my max temps are down around 20c, it does hit about 88c on prime 95 however it stays at 4.5ghz. I have not seen my cpu throttle due to temps at all. That's great!
Loss leader items work if it increases your door traffic because a percentage of your traffic are sales. There is a little more to it, but it is the basic idea.
Really glad AM4 still has a new CPU to bring to the table. An in store exclusive... Hasn't happened in awhile, interesting. I'll be checking out Micro Center here soon.

How did Steve at GN get the scoop before everyone?
Good to see stuff not just ending up on landfills and being used in other ways.
I just replaced my 10 year old PC with a new AM5 rig and the prices aren't too bad (outside of GPUs). Was about 1000 for a 7600, x670e board, 32gb RAM, 1tb nvme, 850w PSU, case, CPU tower cooler and a couple of fans.
Why the X670E with a 7600? Wouldn't a B650E or even a non-E one with a 7700 have been better?
Not criticizing, just curious
@Anankin12 They had one off by 140 bucks, so they gap was considerably less than usual. In the end the difference was only 70 bucks. That should also be more than enough future proofing for any upgrades down the line.
A 7700 was one of the options as well yes. But even with the 7600 I have a GPU bottleneck since I'm running a 2070. So I ended up going with the 7600. Down the line I will probably upgrade then directly to a later X3D one.
Seems like a pretty good way to get some utility out of slightly sub-spec 5800X3D chips. And for AM4 users, could be a good "cheap last update" to move on from like a 3600 without changing a platform.
I do wish the 5800X3D was more affordable and widespread... I ended up just getting a 5700x at like half the price last year.
I don’t go to MicroCenter until September but I’m hoping they will still have stock, gonna be a nice upgrade
I think this is great even if it is limited run because it recycles products that would have been thrown out. Limited availability makes sense. If anyone complains about it then they are being unrealistic to the limitations of this. The product was basically made 2x so the profit margin must be slim.
I'm thinking about scheduling a trip to fill it in one of my incomplete builds. I own systems with a both a 5800X3D and a 5600X, so I might as well grab this for another good PC to run my heavily CPU bound games.
I'm interested to see the benchmarks , this could be super interesting.
I have an 5800X3D with a 4090 (yes, a bit overkill) for no compromise 4K / 120 fps gaming on an LGC2 42. It's an awesome setup. Economy in CPU/Motherboard/RAM allowed me to go all out on GPU.
5800X3D is economy??? 😭😭😭
Welp looks like i'm going to have to do another bios update at some point lol, my am4 board has had like 16 bios updates since launch
I upgraded my PC a few months ago, I went from a Ryzen 9 3900X to a 5800X3d as I was doing more gaming than production. I'm glad I'm able to get another couple years out of my build just swapping in a better cpu.
Stuff like this makes me miss having a Fry's Electronics only a few hours away in Pheonix, Arizona.
Glad to see that AM4 isn't dead. I would love to see the AM4 G sku' CPUs get a PCIE 4 version so you can use PCIE 4 drives and GPUs on while still having the emergency IGPU.

Looks like they down clocked it.

I saw your recent video about the new corsair fans and wires. It would be fun to see you do an all corsair build, maybe black and yellow themed.
So glad I got the 7900X when it went on sale for 349. Had to lower the core voltage a lot but really been enjoying it so far.
Cool move by AMD. Saves e-waste, gives new life to am4 users, and rejuvenates faith in the am5 socket's longevity. Hard to go wrong with team red right now. I suspect their plan for RMA's is to either eat the hit and upgrade people to 5800X3Ds as necessary, or to save any more 5800X3Ds that have RMA or warranty issues as 5600X3D backup stock.
I really like the concept of a 5600X3D, personally. So it would be super cool if they offered a 7600X3D. But I know it's a limited production thing, so I can only hope.
Let 7800X3D production roll for a year more and there might be enough defective cpu's to come up with a lower recycled model.
AM4 reminds me of Socket 7/Super 7. I really hope AM5 is going to age like AM4 did.

Frys and all our other electronics supplies have gone under in Las Vegas. I wish Micro Center would open a location here in Southern Nevada.
I'm curious to see how it would rate against the 5900x or 5950x.
You kidding me, those are not RMA CPUs, those are faulty as in, they did not pass the internal tests, so they're not compliant for a higher end SKU.
They where never returned from final customers, they never left the factory.
I am super excited to see the reviews on this. I’m on a 3600x and this looks really enticing.
just get a 5800X3D
For the warranty, the will have a theoretical failure rate and hold back just enough to cover/replace those but if they do run out due to higher than expected failure, my guess would be to replace with 5800X3D. A bean counter would have done the math on this already.
Maybe AMD is testing the market to see if they should have made a 7600X3D rather than 2 different Ryzen 9 X3D chips since I have a feeling they didn't sell to well
honestly, they'd probably sell more 7600X3D's than the whole ryzen 9 X3D stack has sold so far. way better value where it's needed for all of that cache, even if it's only 72MB L3 over 32MB.
I don't really see the point of a budget AM5 cpu because the mobos and ram are so expensive compared to am4
@@squidwardo7074 It's because the motherboards and RAM are so expensive that a budget AM5 CPU makes sense
@@squidwardo7074 That's been changing pretty fast lately. There are decent $140 motherboards now and DDR5 has been coming down fast as well. HUB did a huge overview of all the B650 boards that they had been testing over the past 6 or so months. A 7600X3D would end up destroying a lot of the competition and for many rendering the 7800X3D pointless if it were at all decently priced.
You have a feeling? That doesn't really mean much.
I have so many thoughts on this lol. Not only is it a smart play from AMD and Microcenter. It forces consumers to go to the store. No bots needed to scalp em which is irony coming from a tech company. The warranty guarantee is a trade off from being recycled parts (smart in and of itself) but the limited runs make it almost collectable, especially if the price is right. The 5800x3D was highly favored right? They look about the same to me lol. Kinda reminds me of the 3300x that never really made it mainstream but if you had one and got it for the MSRP, it was supposedly a hell of a little cpu. Curious to see how well this thing does, especially since I never got to test a 5800XD, but what a play by AMD
This reminds me of the 90's strategy of the "OverDrive" SKUs Intel released. The customer gives you their upgrade money to keep their old platform computer going and, later, will likely give you their "whole new computer" money when they finally upgrade their platform later - instead of *just* getting their platform upgrade money further down the road. I think it's a good way to make 1 customer turn into a customer again. That is, of course, if these are sensibly priced for people to upgrade vs. just buying an AM4 platform as a low cost build.

I had ZERO idea that Microcenter have that few locations. The weirder thing is that at least 2 of them are within 15 miles to me. I'm in St. Louis.
I would like to see them restock them occasionally depending on how many 5800x3d chips fail to meet specs during production. Maybe they can refill inventory every 6 months or they can just keep the new failed 5800x3ds that pass validation to be a 5600x3d in inventory for RMAs and warranty issues.
A great move by AMD for us AM4 owners that want to upgrade from an earlier AM4 CPU!
and only a handful of people will be able to own them
Can't wait to see the benchmarks.
The closest micro center is nearly 2hrs away in Tx wish they’d open more here.
Warranty will most likely be 5600X3D being auto-filled with remaining 5800X3D SKUs. I would be tempted to go out and get this all because my 3600 is getting kinda long in the tooth but good. A 5600X3D would be a mad gaming/encoding/streaming chip and possibly an outstanding overclocker in the wrong board.
That's exactly what I thought. They are just offloading 5800X3D's by clock limiting them and turning off some cores.
That is not what they are doing at all, these are chips with problems that made them not good enough for 5800X3Ds. It makes no sense for them to kneecap perfectly good 5800x3ds.
Hey there, thanks for the info!
Cool thanks Jay and crew. You Rock. :)
The closest Microcenter to me is about 2 and a half hours away from me. I really wish they'd open one closer. It's a wonderful place.
I wouldn't be too worried about warranty support. If they're still making any 5800X3D chips then there will be some that fail validation. I'm sure they'll hold some back from that stock for warranty.

I love this idea. Yes warranty might be an issue, but I think it's worth it to be able to salvage some otherwise wasted parts.
Imagine if you get a free 5800x3d when you RMA
Within the last week I tried to buy some components from the nearest Micro Center, almost 300 miles away. There was no way to have them delivered, and I certainly was NOT about to travel there for anything. I purchased elsewhere from a supplier willing to ship to me. And will do the same in the future.
The 5800X is now going for $189.99 at Microcenter. I'm not sure which of the two, the 5600X3D or the 5800X, would perform better.
5600X3D would in games. 5800x in productivity
I'm glad that they chose Micro Center to do this. Had they gone with a big e-tailer, they would have sold out in the first few minutes, making it a prime scalper item.
Specially for ddr4 and how cheap its getting it would be nice to keep am4 alive, but i do get the pricing stack could get too crowded
I was just questioning how they stay in business with such good deals. Glad they got it working though!
I had to do a warranty for a 3900X, what I was told by the AMD rep was that there were a few options they could do.
1- Replace the part for the same
2- Upgrade you to a higher tier part in the same family
3- Refund you for the part because they cannot replace or upgrade it because of inventory reasons.
Hehe....I'm 15mins away from Micro Center here in MI and I'll be there the morning they open when these drop.

This is interesting.... I just watched your video straight through and have a decent retention of all salient points. Immediately before your video I tried to watch someone else's video which came in at under 8 minutes and had to restart it multiple times because I found myself reaching the end and not remembering what the damned thing was about. One of the last topics he had was the AMD 5600X3D. Your video was almost double the length and I only needed to watch it once. Kind of makes me wonder what is wrong with the other guys style. I'll tell you now, he never appeared onscreen, and I can't swear the voice was human. It could have been a bot. It simply wasn't engaging. Also, great vid Jay. I know they're great for gaming but how would theu be with video editing?
Im currently using 3700x
Recycling silicon was used by Intel way back in the 486 era. They released the dx-66mhz so many were unstable that they clocked the failed ones back and sold them as a dx-60 instead
Some of the AMD oddball chips are fun.
The 3300x and so on. I'm glad they do it. Its good to see a stuff being used rather than thrown out.
i still have a 3300x lol
Don’t forget they came up with those crazy wheels that worked like decoder rings for their naming scheme moving forward. They were gonna start mixing and matching parts from generations by the sound of it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if AM4 gets all the scraps moving forward. Maybe some of these current Gen AM5 CPUs are going to fail to meet the specs for AM5, but the fact that chiplets can be placed onto substrates that work with either platform, means that they might come up with a budget GPU for AM4 that has newer cores.
They might not, but they have the option, and if they wanted to move a Quad Core CPU with crazy fast cores, or a huge amount of cache, they could move it a lot faster on AM4 than AM5 because of the existing install base.
I think AMD would be silly to abandon a mature platform like AM4 when it could be used to liquidate factory second silicon faster than their latest AM5 platform. This keeps the AM5 as premium, which AM4 becomes their budget friendly option.
If I’m right and they continue to do this kind of stuff, it’s a brilliant way to save money and make eWaste a viable product.
I wouldn’t worry as much about the warranty, because silicon that is gonna fail will fail quickly or last for longer than the boards it sockets into. Considering that these have already failed in some way means that the weakest part of them has already been culled. Now I’m not saying these will be flawless, but I’d bet the failure rate is actually lower than a typical CPU product from AMD, and they can probably offer upgrades to 5800X3D or credit towards another purchase if they do fail a second time.
Can’t wait to see how they perform, because the price makes me wonder if it meets or beats the new 7600 CPUs.
man this interesting. I was so close to grabbing a 5800X3D on Amazon for $290 but if this is close to that in gaming performance, I may have to pivot over to this. I live in NYC and can get to the Micro Center here in roughly 30 minutes. If they took trade ins that'd be icing on the cake as I'd be upgrading from a 3700X paired with a 3080.
Im glad they are releasing a new cpu for am4 especially since the cost of entry to am5 is so high
I'm more of an Intel/Nvidia type of guy these days, but I was all AMD for the first decade of my PC building, and this is very cool to see. Love to see them providing further life for the AM4 platform, and just figuring out something to do with all those chips.
I wouldn't worry too much about the warranty, the way it works is you say you intend to sell 1000 products, and you foresee a possible failure of up to 20 of them (2%), you make sure you have at least 50 (5%) on hand to cover that "acceptable failure rate". The only time a warranty can really just go terrible is if there are failures outside of the acceptable rate by a massive margin.
The only problem with this is AMD is charging way to much for it. The 5600x3d should be $160. It’s a last generation 6 core 12 thread CPU and also doesn’t have an integrated graphics either. Why pay $230 for this it’s a complete rip off?
I live 2 hours from a Micro Center. Might make the trip in the near future though.
Im trying to get my friend to build with one of these. Should be an amazing CPU for the money.
I think this is a "final upgrade" part for people on older AM4 who aren't quite ready to buy an AM5 (or Team Blue) system to replace it. My nephew is on a 2600X and is getting married next month.. he can't afford to upgrade that system. In the spirit of your "philanthropy" video I might just get him one of these.
Regarding criticism of MicroCenter's in store only policy... why should they try to compete with Newegg or Amazon? Their attraction is that they HAVE physical locations. I'm about 50 minutes from the St. David's location north of Philly, and I usually find myself talking to other PC enthusiasts when I go there. Sometimes it's beneficial to actually look AT the thing you're buying, and you can't get that online. I went in there to buy a case recently and decided on a Fractal North after seeing it in person... but they didn't have the Black/Walnut/Tempered Glass version on hand. While setting up an order, the department manager came over and showed me that Newegg was having a sale. While he said they would happily match their price, I could get it faster through Newegg. Of course, I left with $200 in RGB fans I didn't really need, but that's how they make money, right? Popups and ads are ignored at best, annoying at worst... but a nice display of LianLi fans with a SALE sign hanging above it just might grab your attention.
It's so exclusively microcenter that it's not being sold at all outside the US. For instance, there's no such CPU existing here in Australia.
That L3 cache will help alot in high refresh rate 1080p and 1440p even. Im running bone stock 5600x cuz im lazy to get a 240 aio, but its chewing 165hz without dropping in most games.
Not worried about warranty MC has always gave the next tier product that's available at the time.
Might as well compare it to some of the other bundles Microcenter has right now. I stare at them at least once every couple of days but trying to hold off for the next gen.
I got my x570 Aorus Xtreme motherboard online from MicroCenter when it first released.
Love the videos, keep it up jay!
Just upgraded to a 5600, wish I'd waited for this
Because of the low volume it was sounding like the 5600X3D was going to be OEM only, I'm glad it's not. DIY is more likely to make good use of it as opposed to someone picking up a cheap HP/Dell computer that doesn't even game.
I am building a small PC for the living room, which will be partly for streaming and partly for gaming. This interests me quite a bit, and there is a Micro-Center about 35 miles from my house.
You gotta test the x3d CPUs in CPU demanding sims like Assetto Corsa, iRacing, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (especially in VR). The 5800x3d Double the frame rates even on older GPUs like 2070 Super.
I'm just absolutely livid that it's only available in microcenters and there's none in my state and I highly doubt that they will ship it.
Are they binned? I ask because I once had an AMD Athlon II X2 where they just disabled two cores to fill the sku, and i was able to unlock the other two cores.
