Very informitive, hope i am about when the new rulings come in! This is a helpful tip, as a 73 year old who rides all types of bikes including E-bikes, i had the misfortune of being knocked of my pushbike, not once but twice in the last 15 years, the thing is i hardly ever use the road and stick to cycle paths but occasionally we all have to use the road at some point, a couple of years back i had a brain wave, i bought some iron on letters from Amazon and stuck these words on the back of my Hi Viz vest "CAUTION CAMERA BIKE" the results where amazing from day one, most of the drivers of vehicles passed me on the opposite side of the road and in all that time you can count the fingers on one hand of the near misses since coming up with that idea, by the way, i do have a camera attatched to my bikes for evidence as you suggest, ver important.
That’s a brilliant idea buddy. I have near misses every time I go out. Might add this idea into my next post or video referencing your post.
Don't forget you can de restrict your bike on private land .

I find that junctions and roundabouts are where I have had the most incidents. I am planning on avoiding roads like you, if I get an ebike. Reason being that I will be riding faster.
I've clocked up about 40 miles on my 1000w Engine Pro, all main roads in my city, spoke to a police officer who looked at it and said nah it's got pedals it's legal so yeah agree with being careful, I wear a GoPro, Helmet and hi-viz and I'm 40... Nobody is looking at me. Thanks for the video

Your comment about being the grey man is spot on….its simple…don’t be a twat…even if the popo aren’t about, plenty of karens nowadays who hate e-bikes because of bad press by people who do ride like twats. We are literally riding a knife edge of legislation changes that may go in our favour, or may actually get worse….good video my man…keep em coming!

I've seen countless times youtubers given an ebike like a Cyrusher to promote and when you look at the spec it's illegal to ride, usually more than a 250W motor. As long as the speed limits is maintained, increasing power and a throttle are sensible amendments especially given areas where I live which j=have hills and I struggle to ride no ebikes

This is a very useful video, I have two myself one bafang 250w converted full size mountain bike that as standard will do 25mph, and a windgoo b20 that I’ve heavily modified, it has no pedals a twist throttle, neon lighting, and is a little bit faster than a standard one yet I’ve never even had a second look from the police, one actually commented ‘that’s cool’ as i rode by. They really don’t have the time to deal with stuff like this, at the end of the day if you ride like a twat you’ll attract their attention. But I think that legislation is needed due to the influx of Chinese bikes that have no restriction and can do the same speeds as most motorbikes.
17.5 mph would be ideal or more cycle lanes in my local area. For anyone looking to be a legal e-bike make sure it has 65 nm torque because that will give you good acceleration on the flat and uphill. The eskute star e-bike is a great example.
Until they realise that we shouldn’t have more than 10nm of torque. 😂

First time viewer of your channel. Great info thanks, but throttles ARE allowed on bike manufactured before 2016 and there are plenty about.

Am about to lend my 74 year old dad my 750w bafang DIY MTB, have programmed it for pensioner use but left the throttle on max power for when he's had enough and just wants to get home.
What sort of time scale are we looking at if this gets approved? I'm in the market for an ebike but am a larger disabled gentleman & dont think 250watts is going to cut it for me.
It definitely won’t. Don’t know if you’ve noticed there’s very few 500w e-bikes on the market. As for when the consultation recommendations take effect hopefully if it goes through early next year.
So ah, that's my bike in the photo. It's the junction at Bank station. I pulled out from a side street using throttle only and pulled up slowly and was pulled over at the lights, no other cyclists to he seen at the time. I held my hands up to the throttle, especially when they tested it, no fine but i expect its a cube by now. I was an easy target, multiple throttled bikes went past them in the 15 minutes i was there. Bit of a shock to see it pop up in your video!
Genuinely sorry to read this buddy … the sad thing is, if the consultation goes through and the government allows throttles as legal that’s going to be a very bitter pill to swallow. Are you getting another ebike?
@ModProjects4306 im 50/50 on replacing it, might have to wait to see how the proposed changes pan out. Although the extra £50 a week in travel costs may make that decision sooner rather than later
Unless they are officially tested and approved as an ebike(type comformity) the specs dont matter. The whole bike is tested as an ebike so all the add on kits dont have legal approval after fitment. However it is not legal to pollute the air so police should not be using cars to stop none polluting transport
“Because of cost” is the problem. “Officially tested and approved specs” definitely matters. The injuries Engwe bikes alone that have caused their customers is tragic and ongoing … it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed by one of these poorly designed bikes in heavy traffic when something goes wrong.
There is a company that sells bikes with throttle control and is legal. Comes with DVLA papers.
I’m aware but this is about the law as it stands … the bikes you buy, not registered with the dvla.
If you get ur bike certified by dvsa as an eapc with a full throttle. Currently costs around 300 to have a full throttle added. Wisper bikes do it and its legal as its 250 w motor max 15.4 top speed using throttle. Its only them ive seen that currently do this though. Maybe the rest will follow suit.
You can. Problem arises when people that have bought cheap Chinese e-bikes and then have to add a third of the cost again to use the throttle. What do you think they’re going to do?
@@ModProjects4306 yeh I'f people aren't going to abide by the rules then they are the ones causing the problems. The whisper module must be programmable to move it from 4 mph limited to full throttle limit. If a guy buys a cheap Chinese bike then pays to get a full throttle added. The bike will get tested and if it's 250 w with max 15.4 mph and fit for purpose it should pass. If it don't fall into the categories it won't pass. I see kids flying about on surrons all the time I work on a golf course. They just don't care but that's a whole other episode haha.
@@roddymac998 Surrons are what e-bike riders get lumped in with. That said if the bikes were legal when they landed with 250w motors and non usable throttle nobody would buy them. That’s the main problem.
Chinese e-bike companies are exploiting and flouting uk advertising law.
@@ModProjects4306 yeh true but the likelyhood of the government allowing full throttle and any watt motor is slim.there will always be people buying these illegal bikes and using them anyway. Especially the under 25s here in Scotland. Won't face any criminal reporcussions and they like nothing more than a chase so police no longer chase them and the cycle continues.

What's the difference between the engwe ep2 pro and the engwe x. I'm so confused i have the pro not sure if to ride it in uk

i have a 750 Engwe pro and i ride on the path and the road am not doing out silly i see the police they do not care am 65 just riding my bike normal
500 watt and more should be ok . But speed limited to 15 m/hr . High torque low RPM motor needed . Throttle better control over pedal rotation , at low speed . Should be all legal .

Guys don’t buy it yet the system of Uk e-bike law is broken no one knows what is the law anymore, you have shops selling e-scooters and e-bike that goes over the speed but you can’t ride on roads, what’s the point than useless. 😊😊

Hi mate your wrong , as it stands atm you can have a throttle but has to be independently "for each bike i kid you not" assessed , your then given a piece of paper saying its passed ... anyway thought id say as not many people know about this rule..
Yes. Well aware but as it stands the two posts I added to the video is the standard law. I’ll do a video about the £300 you have to spend to have a legal throttle later on.

Good release. This problem is not limited to the UK. I live in another country, but usually the laws that are adopted in many countries are copied. And such a law can be adopted here too.

2:02 so that was my bike, throttle was active/not a prick, i held my hands up and they seized but no fine. For added context i was commuting and not a courier.
@@dirtymorris85 ah man dam that sucks, I've had mine for like 2 weeks now. I enabled throttle, but also kinda realised just with the peddle assist it kinda works pretty well already. So I might disable it. But what, did they see it had throttle on and just take it? Was everything else fine? Insurance do anything? Did you get it back? What you using/doing now. Really appreciate you mentioning it.

It was my bike and It was a full operation at this junction outsidebank station, they were on each corner with fb giving out flyers about batteries overloading.
The consultation end result will end up being some half arsed review, based on the negative and irisponsable riders out there, those who couldn't care a toss about other road users.
Sadly the other riders , the ones who show some common sense, will not see anything like the change to the current law that they are so badly needing .
Why can't this government , or any future government not see , that by increasing ebike power and speed , that some motorists may actually use the car less.
They should do two or three ebike classifications, .........basic 750w @ 20mph . 1500W @30mph , but require CBT , a £40 registration fee , 2000w and over , CBT £ 50 registration fee , Insurance MOT

The planet NEEDS micromobility - everyone cannot have electric cars, there is not enough planet. People NEED active transport - 1 in 6 in the UK die from inactivity.
The Dutch have street with space for pedestrians (~5-12kmph) cyclists (~12-25kmph) and some streets, cars (30-50kmph). If the Welsh government had enforce the 20mph limit everywhere in towns etc and the rest of the UK followed it may have made more sense to match it for ebikes.
Google says 'normal' cyclists do 12 mph. At 20 to 30mph ebikers will be forever overtaking, and they will not have had to read the highway code let alone pass any test. Unless you lump 20mph+ ebikes in with mopeds, really they would need a 4th space, ideally protected from cars with at least a kerb.
I agree e-bikes are the instant solution to lowering co2 … problem is, the government talks green, it simply doesn’t walk it.
20mph+ ebikes are classed as mopeds/motorcycles and you need a driving licence to use one. Category AM. - You can drive 2-wheeled or 3-wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of over 25km/h (15.5mph) but not more than 45km/h (28mph). mass in running order of not more than 425kg (not including batteries if it’s an electric vehicle). This is why normal ebikes are limited to power assistance upto 25km/h to fit in with not needing a licence.
