Autism and Haircuts: Can Gabe, a Nonverbal Autistic Teen, Overcome His Fear? Ping Makes a House Call

- Gabe is an autistic and nonspeaking teen. He has been getting his haircut for years, but he can still be unpredictable. The last two times we tried to bring him to the hair salon, he refused to go inside. This time I asked if his hairdresser could make a house call! We did what we could to prepare Gabe, but he was nervous even being at home. We had spa music playing for him and his favorite drink. It wasn't until Ping arrived that he realized it was safe. He sat in our kitchen and allowed her to give him a major haircut! He even allowed her to use the clippers to completion. He never moved or needed a break which was so unlike him. Practice makes progress, however even with a lot of practice we still cross our fingers that it will go well or even happen.
I couldn't believe how well he did even though he was scared.

Everyone did so great! Mom's for helping him have a comfortable and supportive environment, the hair dresser for communicating and being understanding, and Gabe for tackling fears and being willing. He's doing great!
As a former Master Barber, I found that these clients while unpredictable at times, knew who they could trust to keep them safe. And we're very loyal. Willing to wait their turn to sit in my chair. Loved them

Kudos for the hairdresser. It is very hard to cut hair with someone sitting in that kind of position. She did a good job.
Could learn to sit more still though. I always hated going to hairdressers but I do respect them and tried to keep the position to make it easier for them. Usually try to keep the eyes closed for the majority or a great part of the session. It's just a nice thing to do. He moves too much
She's not cutting his hair any different than she would anyone else. I'm not sure what you mean? I've done hair for 37 years and this isn't a big deal. He's actually doing fine. Little kids are much harder to be honest.

@@BsTheLadynred perhaps for you. People are different and other hairdressers could be very annoyed by these kinds of movements and it could be disrespectful. I've had some strict ones that put my head in place and so it should stay there until they move it again. During that time it's at their disposal to make their work easier and faster. I wanna make it faster, I hate being in such places. Have not been in a long time. My girlfriend now does for me at home and I still try to sit as still as possible for her. I do hum and make sounds though with her during that time which helps to relax. In public hairdressing places I don't feel comfortable humming and but lately I have started doing it more in public, some people find it weird but it's relaxing and good for the voice

I also thought he expressed that he chooses long hair. It’s really beautiful long. I also understand that it could be causing him problems with communication. The only thing that matters is that Gabe is happy 🎉❤

Gabe shows so many emotions from ticklish, to concerned, to relaxed and to contentment. I like the way Ping allowed him to feel the clippers before using it on Gabe and how his momma held his hand too. So loving! I’m so proud of you Gabey Baby! You did so well and looks so handsome!

Gabe has a stunning thoughtful face. There’s much going on. Gabe is constantly teaching compassion. He’s the yardstick used for us to measure how to treat people. When we reach Gabe’s level and beyond, we are generally decent people ❤
My son is 6 year old an he has autism. I couldn't of asked for a more perfect human being tho. Gabe reminds me alot of him. The innocence just melts you. I hope Gabe has a very awesome day :) an his hair cut looks great :)

Wow!! She is a professional's professional!! I can tell the care & thought she's putting into each step takes so she doesn't make any unfamiliar noises AS WELL AS the way she "soft-clicks" the scissor so the noise doesn't suddenly freak him out (bcz it's so close to his ears). She is wonderful at her job as well as putting alot of care & thought into every step. If she's not already, I'd DEFINITELY make her a part of the family.

Gabe is being very patient! He is for sure getting a sensory experience from getting his hair cut. I find myself just smiling from ear to ear when he makes eye contact with the camera. I can only imagine that you must be smiling, too.

For some reason, I burst into tears watching this. I think it was the music that did it. I bet you anything that calming music in the background really helped keep him calm. It was taking him to a different place, and then it took me to a different place... --late diagnosed autistic

This is the first video I've ever seen of Gabe, so I don't know how far he has come to be able to sit for this haircut. But I loved watching his face as he processed the different stages of the cut. This stylist was also amazing.

Getting a hair cut can be one of the most difficult of things for someone with autism. Gabe has done so well and Ping was brilliant with him well done both of you. My son is 31 and getting a hair cut depending on how he is feeling can be difficult for him even having the same person doing it at home. Been touched and moved around can just be to much. Love to see all the different facial expressions Gabe is expressing such a lovely young man especially when been squirted with water bless him. ❤
Gabe did so well during that haircut, especially with the use of scissors. The calming background music is such a great idea too, definitely doing that next time. My kiddo is also nonverbal with ASD and haircuts used to take about 2-3 days to fully complete with many breaks along the way. This is truly such a big accomplishment. Nail clippings are now the main challenge for us.

Hi Gabe, just so you know my son who’s also autistic loves to watch your videos. He doesn’t love having haircuts either but we found a man that is patient and kind with him. He allows Scotty to process each step of his hair cut. No clippers, just scissors. He always had longer hair until recently. Your moms are wonderful and you’re a very blessed young man. You’re making an impact on other kids that see the world through a different lens and oh how beautiful you all are. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us. Love the Kai family in SoCal.
