That's what a Reading T-1 would sound like doing 80 MPH with the 6-chime and the fast exhausts.

@TNtrainboy15 Very tight clearance, just a matter of inches in places. The whistle was also taken off at the tunnel just in case it would hit the roof. Also didnt want to smoke out the passengers.

Ok why does a shay need help from diesels? Or were the diesels just along for the ride?

In 1992 the state rebuilt the connection to Spruce which leads to the former Western Maryland line to Elkins.

Ah, she is still a beauty. My Dad was part of the crew that moved her from the Railroad Museum in Baltimore to Cass, WV back in August 1980. I have road behind her and in front of her on many trips to Whittaker Station, and then was on the first trip she made to Bald Knob after the track was reworked so she could make it.
I have got to get back there in 2014, too many wonderful memories.

She was the first one I rode behind when I first visited Cass 20 years ago, but my favorites are #2 and #4.

usually I only hear this 5 chime on the number "5", it's good to hear it on the Big "6".

to push the train through the tunnel, and to take the boxcar and three passenger cars back

they could burn that thing almost exactly clean with oil....they just need to run the perfect mixture of coal into the fire...if the fire is burning hot enough it shouldnt emit any smoke at all...its actually wasted fuel coming out of the stack

  • @SanJuanBranchLineTrainzSeries

Keep in mind Shays are slow. Imagine breathing coal smoke from a hardworking engine for that long
The tender only holds water. The coal is in what would be equivalent to a coal bunker on a tank engine, or right behind the cab
