Cass Shay #11 Tire Removal
zhlédnutí 2,4KPřed 12 lety
Have you ever wondered how the tires are removed from a near century old steam locomotive? On Monday, January 9th several of the Cass shop crew spent the day removing eight tires from Shay #11's wheels. In order to remove the steel tires they must first be heated, which allows the tire to expand just enough for it to be beat off the wheel with a sledge hammer.

Western Maryland 733 anyone?
What whistle did the NKP 765 have in The Second Clip
Here's something you don't see at Cass whenever they operate. Snow.
The no 33 is becoming my new favorite now, Pure Baldwin through and through.
It is great to see two Lima "Berkshire" type locomotives together accompany one another in operation, the 765 and 1225 freight doubleheader was an impressive sight to observe. You really need to be impressed by the performance of steam locomotives as not many of them are currently in operational service condition in the modern era of railroading.
It is very enjoyable to see a steam locomotive in service hauling freight, the Nickel Plate Road 765 delivered an amazing performance hauling freight as this was a reflection of railroad operations during the 1940s-'50s. Steam locomotives are always enjoyable to see in action because they have been phased out of service since the 1950s and now not many are left in operation.
Doing what it does best pulling freight
AWESOME video seeing it do what it does best pulling freight
I think you misspelled passing
which bell do you like better? Big 6 0:50 Shay 5 1:08
I was imagining a Climax Doubleheader with 3 and 9. That would be awesome!
this video was my most favorite of all time. I've seen it when I was 4, and I still enjoy it.
Hey! No fair! Those two EMD pushers at the rear.
Come to know for any of you who didn't, This is what Western Maryland 734 looked like before her rebuild by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
They must bring steam back for real. Sure it may cause climate change faster burning dirty coal (even if it’s anthracite), but once all the work’s oil reserves start to dwindle those diesel fuel prices will become more expensive than even the total cost of labor for operating a steamer...
Okay I know there are greener options (like using wind and solar power to operate electric trains) And I don’t mean to force any of my motives onto anyone. But seriously, they should use steam engines more regularly to help combat oil prices (not counting steam engines that burn heavy fuel oil like the Union Pacific 844 or the Daylight 4449)
Nice!!!

I LOVE The N&W Hooter Whistle!!
is 1309 a mallet? I can’t properly examine the cylinders
As powerful as she is, that whistle just doesn't fit her mood.
that hooter :')
Gutsy restoration. Nice it's not just another 4-8-4. Variety is, after all, the spice of life.
Nice
0:04, Oh it's that car again. The same car following the Pere Marquette 1225...
Very cool 🙂
Contact me if you'd like to update your video, this railroad deserves more than some drone shots. (which have aged a bit)
Else 1309 is the polar express train
Any updates? So they restored her and put her back on display in, at the museum? What's going on we haven't gotten any updates or new videos of her in almost 7 months
they haven’t put it back on display??? check their Facebook they post updates
This seams so peaceful to me 🥲
I saw a comment saying it was restored, but I recognize the name as a location, and the engine the be reliable, and the number, to be something someone may not ever want to mess with, dont mess with numbers thats for sure.
It’s an N&W Hooter Whistle 12”. It came from either A or Y class locomotives.
The Hooter Whistle is my ALL TIME Top FAVORITE Steam whistle!!
Whistle sounds exactly like the one on N&W 1218.
My brother called me from Roanoke the day this train returned to Roanoke. He was so excited about trains, and it was just about the time he had beaten cancer. So he was able to follow it home for a ways at least. Sadly we lost my brother Jan 1st 2020, not to cancer, but at least the day that train rolled into Roanoke was a great day for him, and I will always remember that day. Thank you for getting some really great video of this moment.
Went that year and coming back this year. It was on Saturday October 7th. So beautiful.
It’s been 5 months, where is she at? I woulda thought she would be the belle of the ball by now
looks like a ghost train with all that steam...
When is it expected to enter into service?
Late summer, its currently in its final stages of its overhaul.
Thank you! I had been waiting for so long for this! Thank you for letting me know!
@@TRAINGUY-ey3hj your welcome!
Awesome trains
astonishing upload Walter Scriptunas II. I shattered the thumbs up on your video. Keep on up the awesome work.
I just want more articulated locomotives restoration to be operational
i wonder if 765 will ever be decked out with a black smoke box again.
Why does the second whistle sound like me screaming with a microphone in my voice box
And thus, another symbol of railroading's golden years is miraculously raised from the dead.
that squeaky wheezing doesn't sound good
Love that whistle
First the UP Big Boy and now the C&O 1309 moving under their own steam. We can only hope for a second golden age of steam, even if only restored.
Exactly!
