- On July 10 2008 the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association (MSR&LHA) with the Cass Scenic Railroad and the West Virginia Cenral Railroad (Durbin and Greenbrier Valley RR) ran an excursion with Cass's Western Maryland Shay #6. Big Six ran the 1st Steam Powered Trip to Elkins, WV in 30 years. Travel along for the ride up Cass Hill and down the Shaver's Fork of the Cheat River for this historic excursion.
Bad ass whistle. When i saw her 7 years ago she had a low toned whistle.
it's good to see the Big 6 back in operation
we started off with 4 cass cars and a caboose, then at spruce we picked up the three coaches they use on the Cheat Mountain Salamander, along with the tanker from MSR&LHA, and a boxcar with generators. we dropped off 2 of the cass cars there too. it was a LONG train
that reading 6 chime step top. fits big 6 perfectly
Its actually a Nathan 6 Chime turned down on a lathe, it sounds very close to a real reading 6 chime but has step tops.
Yes she pulled excursions one the Greenbrier Scenic Railroad from Roncevert,WV to Durbin, WV through Cass
Cass to Elkins is 50 miles! I didn't think any Shay could travel that distance xD
Took us a little over 11hrs if I remember correctly. Really didnt seem that long to me. Fun times!
The True 6'er I was referring to was Danny's RDG 6 chime flat top. The one you hear on this is from MD Whistles and is not a replica, but a new make based on plans for the RDG 6, just built as a step top.
The original WM whistle was a deep 3 chime short bell, about half the size of the Hancock on 734. It was a blat whistle than a show whistle, and Danny prefers the higher pitch as it's easier to work with. I'd personally like to hear it back on 6, it gives her character that the RDG's can't.
Ok thanks. Must of been a great trip.
Number 6 was built for this task. She is one powerful locomotive, the most powerful shay built. Beats any diesel locomotive.
A little bit of trivia, Shay #2 is the only known shay to ever burn wood, oil and now coal.
Great Video! Thank You for sharing.
The 6 has a graet whistle with an artist that knows how to use it! Wonderful!
Great videos!
I stand corrected. Images of her entering Elkins show it being the step-top. Funny Danny mentioned he was going to put the True 6'er on her, if not the SOU 6 chime would take its place.
yeah 2102 ran in the early 70's but that was between Roncevert and Durbin. The shays from cass used to go to elkins via slatyfork and up through there, but I guess due to CSX/Western Maryland not allowing them at some point they didn't run there anymore.
2102 was there back in the 70's, she ran along the durbin line. since the grades up to bald knob would of been to steep for her to climb
Wow is that an RDG 6 chime? it sounds pretty good!
the "oil car" that Shay 6 was pulling was actually a 10,000 gallon tank car full of WATER for the shay. since there are no water tanks from spruce to elkins, the water car was needed in order to continually fuel the water. and the shay runs off coal. she is not an oil burner.
what happened a while ago, maybe 20 years or so, the 6 went to durbin via C&O greenbrier branch... that would be sweet if she ran that line again,...... oh well :(
Ok i heard of a sound track and it said 2102 was running along somewere down right by there. thanks for the info.
I went to Cass for the second time this past year. Wish i could have caught this ride in 08!
this really cool best vid on youtube
I doubt there'll be a lot of video from trackside, most of the trip is through untouched national forest, so there were only a few actual places where people could video/photograph fromt he road ala outside of cass, cheat bridge, and maybe elkins
god that thing is huge...
MD Whistles best whistle
The largest Shay still in existance.
I totally saw my car parked across the street from the depot
(blue subaru outback)
Cass should do this again
Great video. Why has there been no trips there in 30 years. Was't 2102 around there in the 70's?
Wow! That is a LOUD whistle. Great video... hopefully there's something of this trip from trackside.
Actually it's a nathan 6 chime that was turned down on the lathe
Jay611,
may I ask what the True 6'er is? I'm most familiar with Big Six having one of the deeper whistles like the one WMSR 734's been wearing.
That whistle... BEAUTIFUL sound. What is that whistle?
John Gordon thank you
Thomas Weekley it's a Reading 6 Chime
@@connordilworth8454 Im pretty sure Its a modified C&O 6 Chime
how many cars was shay number 6 pulling that day.
Thats not the step top, thats the real deal RDG 6 chime.
@eltonjohnfan100 That was before I got my whiste, but I still thnk it is nice.
what was the amount of cars on the train the cass section
The step top is easey to weld.
That would be a RDG 6 chime right?
what was the amount of cars on the train
cool.
What is her top speed?
no prob
Umm we already corrected him in a more nicely manner. He was just mistaken.
you sir need to do some studying!
A few problems with your argument. You get more work out of oil then coal, as the fire burns hotter. Most oil burning locomotives use a recycled oil, so it's not a "first use" product and quite cheap even by gasoline standards. And a good fireman doesn't "waste it up the stack", in either oil or coal. You want a good clean stack and good combustion. To recap, it's not $4 a gallon, it shouldn't be wasted through poor combustion, and it's already been used once. Just the facts.
Western Maryland Shay #6 burns coal not oil. Always has and always will. All the engines on the Cass Scenic Railroad burn coal!
no ryan, just no
