- In 2008, the Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Association brought steam back to Elkins with Western Maryland Shay #6. This event marked the first time in several years that one of the Cass geared locomotives made the trip to Elkins for a weekend of excursions.

Nothing like a North American loco whistle and indeed a Shay locomotive is quite unique. Great scenery!
Western Maryland Shay 6 is a nice Shay steam locomotive at Cass. A pretty Shay locomotive.

Perhaps if those prices rise high enough we'll see more steam trains, or at least according to Ross Rowland.
Those prices were a nightmare, especially in California!!!!
My only disappointment about being on this excursion was a mostly flat grade and didn't get to hear the shay work as much. Nevertheless I'm sure it was a nice break for her :)

what happened to 6
She's been in the Cass shops for years now getting repairs. I've ridden behind her up the mountain to Bald Knob right before her repairs. Don't remember what year it was. She should be back up and running hopefully by early next year. They will not be running 6 up to Bald Knob anymore due to the weight of the loco messing the tracks up. She will most likely be used on the Greenbrier line. Ik I'm a nerd lol.
She is back out in operation now. Finished with overhaul in September I think.
Gets hit by train while reading watch out for trains sign.
