  • I put together these clips of the Western Maryland from Super 8 films from both Red Moser and myself. Red visited Hagerstown on a trip out west in 1971. The clips with the 2102 and the D&H PA's from January 1972 are mine, while the final scenes of the Western Maryland Scenic are also Red's. Sounds from my video library.

    The quality of sound is really clear when the steam engine passes! That’s good quality for the 70s!

      The film was silent. Sounds were dubbed in. The 2102 sound is authentic but recorded about 20 years later.

    I was looking at the thumbnail and thinking "my goodness, must be an Alco", and then I realised there was a steamer tucked in behind it.

    What an awesome collection of locomotives, not just the WM, but several other lines as well, and an awesome variety. Too bad there was no digital cameras back then...

    That is beautiful stuff right there! The footage of Reading 2102, the BL2, and the RS3, and the D&H PAs was the best in my opinion.

    I was on one of those WM excursion trains with Reading 2102 from Baltimore Port Covington to Hagerstown in February 1972. The air temp was about 20 degrees, not counting wind chill, but it was one of the most enjoyable railfan trips I had been on over the WM lines, even though it took a good while to thaw out after riding much of the trip in an open dutch door vestibule. Fun times! Miss the old WM.

    Thanks for the memories. Used to remember those RS 3's on coal drags on the Thomas sub when visiting my grandparents in the 50's and 60's. Engines always shinny and clean in those days. Things have changed.

      They say when you start hating the direction things are going its that you're getting too old. Change isn't always bad, but a lot of the things that have changed are indeed for the worst. We may have high powered digital toys today, but just about everything else used to be better. Pick an area of interest. Railroading is one, music is another. I'm not getting too old, the world has just changed in the wrong ways.

    Gotta love the Western Maryland especially the speed lettering, the circus colors, saw an Industrial Brownhoist crane an A+++ there, RS 3’s and BL 2’s, which I was fortunate to ride in the cab of Western Maryland #81 around fifteen years ago in Honesdale, PA. Excellent work once again fmnut. Thank you.

      The BL 2 you rode at Honesdale was an ex Bangor & Aroostook unit. WM 81 is at the B&O museum, 82 is on the West Virginia Central.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 4 lety +1

      The Alco era on the WM Scenic was relatively brief. All of the Alco power was leased, once they got the 734 running the Alcos left the property for various new locations.

    • @appalachianrails
      @appalachianrails Před 4 lety +2

      How about railroader points for being able to work with it today? It’s one of our most reliable locomotives and can maintain heat in the cab. That cab heat was nice after helping switch cars in a foot of snow. Lol

    • @jeffreymcfadden9403
      @jeffreymcfadden9403 Před 4 lety +3

      WM had 2 BL2 locos,,,81,82,,,,,,,,,renumbered in 1975 or 76 to 7181,7182.
      I saw them both. They worked in their last years of service at the WM Hagerstown yard.(which by 1976/77 was mostly abandoned.
      They both survive.
      WM found them to be too light for road service,hence yard work.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 3 měsíci

      WM did initially use the BLs in road service, there are many photos of that. It wasn't that they were "too light". It was found that when used in multiple with other units, the frames were subjected to too much buff and draft stress and exhibited cracking. This was because of their hybrid construction, part F unit and part hood unit. They were restricted to yard service for that reason.

  • @RailPreserver2K

    I know by the time the 70s rolled around the F unit was starting to become a bit of a Dying Breed but I am curious I know a few steam locomotive survive from the Western Maryland but how many diesels are still in existence and I'm not referring to just one model I'm saying in general

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 4 lety +1

      Well, there's both BL-2's, one in West Virginia and one at the B&O museum, which also has a WM F7. There was a GP unit out in Pittsburgh supposed to go to a museum but I lost track of that one. There are a bunch of other road's diesels painted in WM schemes also, but those 4 are the only original WM ones I know of.
