    Insurance is an absolute cod in Ireland. I was thinking of moving home a few years ago. Out of curiosity, I got a few car insurance quotes. The cheapest one I got was 1100 Euro for a 1.2 Corsa. I'm 36 and have been driving 15 years and have never crashed! Meanwhile, in Australia, my bike insurance as a brand new rider on an R3 was $500- about 350 Euro.
    Ireland is getting fucking rode by Insurance Companies. It's a joke there.

      @LuckyLukeRides  Před 6 lety +4

      Car insurance is a whole other story man. I'm workin' with a few lads that are home from Australia & they're the same, getting quoted nearly a grand and a half for a 1.2 Focus! I think when you're out of the country from more than 2 years you start like a new driver when you come back, no matter what experience you have, fuckin' joke. €350 for an R3 is a seriously good price. Companies here would google "R3" see how sporty it looks and go "Yeah €1,300" haha!

      Lucky Luke Rides Yeah they don’t recognise your no claims from Oz. Of course they fuckin’ don’t! Plus, I could never drive any car with less than 150bhp anymore- Oz and it’s big cars has me ruined!

    It takes a special kind of skill to answer an incoming call and pluck a random number out of your arse and present it as a perfectly reasonable quote. Insurance companies in Ireland have perfected this skill. Dead right regards ringing around. I got a quote last year and didn't even ring around just rang back ten minutes later to say I had another crowd who wmtjdwdm it for €150 cheaper and they matched it without blinking an eye. Then I said I'd get back to they and actually did ring a few more places and another €80 quid off it. You just have to play them at their own game sometimes.

    • @LuckyLukeRides
      @LuckyLukeRides  Před 6 lety +1

      Kaza whaki They really have perfected the art of shite talk to be fair to them haha! Glad you managed to get a few quid off! Theres stories around of lads just making up random quotes & telling companies that somebody else offered them this, then the company matched it out of spite of the other company it’s madness. I’m looking forward to April to see what mine will be again. I don’t think it’ll go any lower than €314 but having said that, I’ll have another years no claims under my belt! :) not looking forward to getting quotes on the A licence in September though haha!

    Every policy is different, and that is a problem too. Some only cover social riding, so exclude daily commute, some exclude pillion. My first policy, on a brand new bike, learner permit €1200 with Liberty (fully comp). Carol Nash quoted me €1700, Axa, €2400. Next year, with no claims, Liberty rider assessment, and then a full license, it came down to €760. This year, with 3 year no claims, it's €420 (which now also includes pillion. I can live with that.

    • @LuckyLukeRides
      @LuckyLukeRides  Před 6 lety +1

      Axa always seem to be the most expensive to be fair, don't know how they're still around. €420 is very reasonable man, especially for the size & condition of your bike. Out of curiosity what grade did you get in the Liberty rider assessment, how much did you get discounted & how long is that valid for? :)

    • @photobiker4309
      @photobiker4309 Před 6 lety +1

      I have Liberty Level 2 assessment. I think there are 3 levels. It gets me 30% off. It was done, as part of my pre-test by the instructor. I think it's valid indefinitely. Once you get it, you're good. You can always do more and get a further grade.

    Motorcycle insurance is not a simple thing anywhere. Plus there are so many differences between different countries.
    Over here too, a Supersport of 600cc will pay DOUBLE in insurance and registration compared to my 1750cc cruiser!
    Here in Canada because of the winter "lockup" many people stop the insurance for few months every winter.
    My opinion...When it comes to motorcycles...Full insurance, all the time. Find a good deal and play safe.
    Kudos for tackling this topic, Luke!!! Ride safe!

    • @LuckyLukeRides
      @LuckyLukeRides  Před 6 lety

      BigBadWolfMoto Yeah, I think most sports bikes no matter what CC are just labelled death traps because let’s be honest, the majority of inexperienced, new riders will get one because they “look cool” crash it, and drive up everyone else’s insurance. Yeah I watch a few other Canadian Motovloggers and lots of them stop there insurance for winter because it’s paying for nothing but a bike in a garage haha! Cheers for watching, ride safe lad :)

    Well luke, I think you should make a follow up video to this explaining everything that you know yourself about getting premiums cheaper, for example, Axa have a motorbike skills assessment program to give drivers a premium discount based on there skill levels, so that’s based off of a points system which is broken down into four groups. Which group you are placed into depends on the type of discount you will get. So I think this should be something for another video, and similar things like this that you might know about.

    I'm thinking of importing my Indian Spirit motorcycle to Ireland after living 40+ years in the U.S. First I'd have to start from scratch with a learners permit, safety course and jump through all the hoops. None of my years of ridding as a fully licensed rider is taken into account. I'm trying to see if I can ride as a tourist with green card coverage and U,S registration so at least I could enjoy a tour before the torture starts. Before I left Ireland in the mid-seventies half the country was ridding without a license or on a provisional now it's like trying to stuff a wet noodle up a rabid tiger's ass. I enjoyed your video! One year 2019 full coverage in U.S. $480.00 with bike valued at $8,315, pretty reasonable.

    • @LuckyLukeRides
      @LuckyLukeRides  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey man, I wish you all the best with getting it imported and getting your licence sorted. It's true, the system has changed quite dramatically since 2013 I think is when the EU licence regulations started to affect Ireland. I do know that you can transfer a Canadian licence for an Irish one so I'm wondering if it's possible to exchange your U.S. one to a Canadian one and then finally to an Irish one. I'm not sure if it's possible but could be a workaround if it does work! The insurance costs have gone crazy here, sounds much more reasonable in the U.S.

    Interesting to hear the difference between US and Ireland policies. The underwriting criteria should be more transparent, but keeping that info secret just means they can charge whatever rate they deem fit. There are stories here where you get a quote online, then call in and the agent "reviews" your info and then finds some obscure discount that lowers the rate, all in order to get your sale. Good topic 👌

    I'm 24 and I've been living in Ireland (Galway) for 2 years..I bought an MT-07 A2...did the IBT (450 Eur) then started with calling the Insurance companies. Liberty did not quote since they need Minimum 3 years No claims. Carol nash quoted 2633 Eur for third party + fire + theft. 2830 Eur for 3rd party alone, and 3722 for Compenhsive. Of course, it is wayyyy....too much. Then I called Paddy Compare. They quoted 2484 Eur for comprehensive. Finally, I called Principal...they quoted me 1672 Eur for comprehensive coverage. This was the least I could get....so I purchased it. The insurance was high since it was my first-time insurance in Ireland, and also the bike cc was high (689). The insurance would have been more expensive if it was an unrestricted MT-07.

Same as where your bike is stored, how many km will you be doing in a year, how secure is your bike when parked (alarm, chain, alarm disc lock, etc). and yeah do shop around, some will ask you to pass a axa or aon test to get a discount, some instructor will tell you it is not worth it but I would say (not done it yet) that it would be a plus on the long run if you have spent 200 euro ish, you will more than likely save some.

    The motorcycle you have is a major issue. Mine is a 600cc with 107 HP and that was a pain to get it insured on a provisional. The bigger the engine and the more powerful the bike is the harder will be to get a quote and it will be much more expensive.
    And another thing: for the love of all gods don't tell them your bike is modified. Tell them is stock. Otherwise everything gets complicated and more expensive for you.

      That's mad man. I'm 23 and have had the full car licence since I was 17. I'm paying €830 for 3rd party fire & theft on a 1.6 litre Ford Focus, that's with 4 years no claims.

      Lucky Luke Rides damn, see first year insured. Fully comp but it was cheaper than third party. Will have 1 year no claims in April. Hopefully I'll be massive drop

      Jesus that's pricey man! Cracking bike but that's crazy expensive. I'm looking at getting an MT07 in September, hoping the insurance won't be that big of a jump!

    I just got my shitty little xblade insured with liberty. 600 euro for a 50cc. All the other companies didn't even have the bike in the system. Insurance in Ireland is fucked.
