Best thing I've ever heard. "I did pass maths, what the fuck does that mean?"
Haha, just the harsh truth.
Even though this video is a few years old it's seriously helpful. Thanks lad.. 😊
Glad I could help man! :) If you've any other questions give me a shout!
This video is brilliant! I was so confused about getting my bike licence! Now it's all clear!!! Thank you so much!
As of 1 Nov 2020, the minimum CC requirement for A2 was changed from 395cc to 245cc. You can now do the A2 test on 250's and 300's :)
Fionn may I know how much does buying a new 250 cc bike costs in Ireland??
Benelli 250's around 4 and a half thousand!. All others about 6 to 8 hundred more!
@@casper1434 is it four and a half thousand euros?
@@ghtehtr yes, might be around 4.6
Yes this is very helpful...and thank you Luke for bringing light to areas that can be frustrating...
He said in a video that his family has suffered multiple bereavements..
We can only imagine the depth of pain he has went through this past year.
I have gone trough loads of sites and I was beginning to think I was thick until I seen this lads video fareplay to ya it’s the only one that makes it sound easy and thank you I’ll get on to it tomorrow good man yourself miller
Cheers Miller!
The RSA don't make it easy to be fair so glad this could help :) Best of luck with getting it all sorted!
Brilliantly clear video with accurate info buddy 🙌 much appreciated given I’ve been trying to find a correct source of what the steps are. So thank you for that 👍
Great video man! Just thinking of getting a bike and you've steered me closer. Many thanks.
No hassle at all man! Best of luck with it!
Yo Luke, great video. I was very confused about getting my bike license but then I watched this video and know what I need to do. I'm 17 and looking to get my A1 license because you know, no one wants AM. I really want to get a bike license because I would love to start a motovlog channel like you and go to bike meets and drives. Thanks for a great video and good luck with your future with this channel. Might see you on the road someday. Good luck
Best of luck with it man! :) Glad the video helped!
Well done buachaill, very informative, and entertaining. And.... you have Trá lí looking tops 😊
Fair play in fairness it’s everything you need to know on here great job 👍🏻
its all there.... well done should be helpful to the new lads
Cheers Rob! Glad I didn't miss anything that you can think of :)
Thanks for the info very helpful, hope nothing has changed since you posted this video :)
Nothing has changed at all since this video man! :) Any other questions just fire away!
After watching this video, I'm starting to like US. Way too many pointless rules. Just cause bike is smaller it doesn't make it safer. Sometimes you need some torque to power out from certain situation. I can't believe people have to go through all those steps just to get motorcycle license. That's just my opinion. Nice vid, Luke!
100% agree with you man. These are the new European regulations that were brought in around January 2013. I do agree with the IBT (The bike training) because before that you could just get on a bike & ride without any training but the restrictions are a load of bollocks! I mean why do I have to wait another 2 years to upgrade to a bigger bike? :/ Guess it's just the way it is haha.
@@LuckyLukeRides For all you know it could've saved your life.
Look up how to go about getting your full driving licence from the start if you think that's bad cars are worse to get full driving licence for
This video cleared a lot up for me thanks pal
That is a lot of hoops to jump through, friend. In the states, we have one test and then GO! Or in my case, I took a one-weekend mortorcycle safety course which counts as the test. And then no worries after that.
That's so handy man! You don't have any limits on the bikes you can ride either!
I love your intro tune. I've started humming it 😂
Brilliant video, thanks.
nice one, Luke. Just wanted I needed!
No hassle Paul, glad it helped! :)
Very helpful video lad, good stuff
Thanks man, glad it helped :)
Thank you . This was so useful to me
Glad it helped Arnold pal!
Great piece of info . 🤘
For a moment whilst watching this I were thinking that unlike out here in the UK you don't have what we call a CBT, then you mentioned the IBT and they're basically the same thing. The licenses & age restrictions are the same :D
A good vid though man ^^
That's pretty mad! They must've just changed the name to try make it somewhat different! :P
As reference: these are not identical trainings. The UK version is 1 day, and allows you to use bikes upto 125cc (auto or manual) when on your own. You can only ride more powerful bikes when under supervision with an instructor (until you pass your two practical tests and get your full licence).
In the Irish 2-day version, you need to decide beforehand and complete the training on the type of bike you want to ride eventually - in terms of power & gears. So if you go with a manual 600cc bike, the IBT allows you to ride any type of motorcycle on your own.
Exelent. So helpful. Thanks so much lad
No hassle GTAMASTER! Glad it helped man!
Love this vid cheers bro
This video helped me out thanks man
No problem man, glad it helped! :)
Cheers pal, very helpful
Great Help Thanks
No problem pal :)
this was great help. sound.
No problem at all man, glad it helped :)
also i want to buy a yamaha v star 250 its cheap and i love the way it looks but its around 250 cc is there anyway i could get some sort of resistor put in to bring it down to 125 cc since im getting an a1 license and im 16
Thanks for help 👌🏻
Thanks for the info, guess I better get saving
Thanks, hope to get the my Tractor, and Quad license, might get 125cc one
Best of luck man!
Great info thanks
No hassle pal!
Im a 31 yr old Trucker an got the full A license when i completed my training for Trucking. Good for me bcos im into bikes, but for someone who isnt its madness givin them out yes its a nice perk to becoming a Trucker but in the wrong hands its a potential death cert!
few questions,
would you recommend restricting a bike or just buying a low powered one? and what's the cost.
can you buy a bike to do your lessons or do they give you one, or which is best?
and what's the insurance costs/ and total cost of everything not including the bike.
What materials would you reccomend to pass the theory?
helpful video mate thanks
No bother at all man! Any questions just fire away!
What's your full bike license test like compared to your full license car test is it easier to pass would you think?
So i might not necessarily need to have my bike when I go to the IBT if the course has one?
Excellent 💯 vedio man no bullshit approach.
So to clarify, once you've done a theory, licence and IBT, you can just ride around till you do a test? Even if that's an A category sized bike if you're 24 or older? Ie at 24 you could get a learner permit do the IBT and theory and then jump on a ducati panigale, or bmw 1000rr and just ride around till the practical test?
If I’m getting a bike that needs to be restricted, how do I get it restricted without having insurance? I’m thinking of getting a ninja 600 and getting it restricted, will I be able to do the test on this too?
Can you ride the am on a driving license in Ireland? Without doing anything else?
What’s the best 125cc to buy and what woudl insurance be for a 17 year old
Does an a1 have to be 125 cc or is it based on watts
can u just go straight for an A2 licence when your of age and have the theory test done or do have the climb the ranks going from AM to A1 to A2 ???
Really helpful vid, I was enjoying myself till you passed the graveyard were my grandfather's buried 😂😂😂
excellent video
Thanks
Cheers Ned! Glad you found it helpful!
Hope all is well on your travels, I'm a big fan of your channel! :)
Good video ! A2 myself and currently riding Suzuki Sv650. Failed test first time round by locking the rear wheel in the emergency braking but have it booked again so fingers crossed I'll pass next time
Cheers Michael, thanks for watching! And Jesus man, that's fair unlucky, what a nightmare. Fingers crossed for next time! The Sv650 is a savage bike! :)
Lucky Luke Rides hopefully anyway keep producing the content man hope to get a cam myself soon and do a bit of footage maybe not vlogs though !
I'll sub to you anyway man, there's a fierce lack of Irish lads, not even vlogging but with the helmet cams! :)
Lucky Luke Rides ah ino man I found you because of wizard he done a video sharing a few names and stuff like that. He's seemed to slow off lately too. This weathers a killer 😂
Haha, yeah! Been trying to get out as much as possible myself. Never know when it's just going to snow or get really icy out of nowhere. Typical Ireland!
Which category do I have to apply with a 1,170 cc?
god im lovin ur video lol id love to learn how to ride a bike but id be going from standing on the Tarmac to a 600cc... dont even know how to start one let along drive one. I got fond of 4 wheels now i want to get into the saddle ;) loved the info and thank you for all the information :)
No problem at all Sharon! Doing the I.B.T really helps though, I had never started or sat on a bike before I did mine, now I've been riding for 2 years and have got myself a brand new bike! It's a great past-time as well as a commuter vehicle and the community/social aspect of it is the best part. Any other questions feel free to ask! :)
well first step is the theory so fingers crossed :) will keep you updated
I'm just looking into this am I able to go straight for my A liscens I'm 24? And while I'm a Lerner can I drive on my own. I have full liscens for cars
Cheers. With this lockdown I've decided to get a bike licence. Couldn't figure out if I could use a cheap 125 for the unrestricted licence test so cheers. Any recommendations on a good 400cc or 35kw bike.
Hi Guys, what kind of motorbike can I drive in Ireland with a category B driving license. In Poland, for example, you can drive a motorcycle up to 125 cc.
I have a questiuon, what if you have a category B and decide to go for category A, do you need to do the full theory test again or is it a test made of questions only for bikes?
Can ye do more on a bike for a 17 year old im turnin 17 and want to get a 125cc honda cbr can i get a bigger engine ???
thanks for the info, this really helped, stay safe 👍
king nidge Haha no bother at all King Nidge! Make sure to get some nice biking boots with "King Nidge" written on them 😂
Lucky Luke Rides ,ha ha good one,us irish are the only ones who know the real king nidge, just subbed there mate
I have my provisional car licence already do I have to do another theory test for a motorbike or how does it work since the passed a theory already? Can anyone help
if you have a full car licence can you drive a 125cc?
good morning sir i live in Ireland i have a full a licence for 30 years i want to pull a trailer what are the legal requirements ? thank you .
Can I use my bw theory test and get an a2 liscense
Can all this work on a dirt bike
I was thinking about getting a CRB300r. But now I know the engine is gonna be too small for the A2 license that I want
Hey, your video is quite informative, I am 25 years of age and looking forward to book a theory test, can you help me find the practice test questions as I can't find it anywhere.
Thanks I’m hoping to get my a1 license in December of this year
Hope it goes well man!
For the a test the bike must be over 600 cc but also must have a kw output of over 50 , most cruiser bikes dont
Is the theory test the same as the car one
I'm pretty sure I saw they say now you still have to serve your time on a 125CC even at 18 before accessing anything over 125
Can I drive alone after having a learner permit with the green L jacket on?
Very useful information. Gave me a good idea what I need to do before going to a instructor.
So after getting the provisional licence you can't practice on the road unsupervised until you pass the rider training hours in full?
That sounds more like the UK system, where their IBT equivalent (called 'CBT') allows you to ride bikes only upto 125cc on your own (with L plates on the bike), after getting your provisional license. You can only ride more powerful bikes under instruction or supervision, until you pass your practical tests (there are 2) and get your full licence. Which makes it tricky to get enough practice on your own powerful bike, as you're not allowed to (+you can't get insurance to) ride it on public roads.
In Ireland it's a bit more sensible: after the theory test, you get a learners permit and take your IBT on the kind of bike you want to ride - in terms of power and gears. If you go with a high power manual bike (about 600cc or more), you're allowed to ride any bike on your own from that point (with a high vis L vest you wear). Then after 6+ months if you pass your practical test (one test) on the same bike, you have your full A licence.
Great video mate. Looking to get my licence for a long time but the RSA info is very confusing. Your video is extremely helpful thank you! Can you tell me what a roundabout figure do u think insurance would be for a 30 year old starting off. A good insurance company to go for first time insurance aswel that would be much appreciated. Thanks again. Subbed and liked!
Cheers Sean! Yeah the RSA info is actually quite confusing, partly the reason I made this video. Insurance is all dependent on the bike you're looking at getting. My guess would be anywhere between €200-800! I'm 22 and my first year on the bike was €879 but after just one year with no claims my insurance has come down to €311!! That's with Liberty! Best bet is to ring around and ask all the big ones like Liberty, Axa & Carole Nash! Hope this helps man!
I have a full Car licence and more than 2 years CBT from UK. Do i still need to apply for the learner permit?
Hey man! To be honest with Brexit and everything you will have to do everything from the start which is a major pain in the balls man.
Would I be able to use a cbr 600F to do my a2 tests, my theory test is the 17th if December so this month can’t wait for it. But anyways would I be able to use it ?
Well pal, just checked on the link here: www.magireland.org/2012/information-sheets/a2-license-facts/
It says that the CBR600F can't be restricted to the A2 license. That's a handy link by the way, lets you know what bikes are A2 off the bat or the ones that can/can't be restricted. Best of luck with the theory test it's grand :)
Say for example if someone was 18 and they didn't have the am or a1, could they just apply for the a2?
Hey pal! Yeah, if you're 18 or over you can apply for the A2 straight away. That's the method I did. I was 20 and I applied for the A2. Passed my test. Then after 2 years of having my full A2 licence I was able to just do another days lessons and I got the full A licence.
Hello @Lucky Luke Rides! You’ve explained it quite well…! But, I had a couple of questions:
1. Are there any lady bikers out there? If yes, how can I meet them?
2. I’m 24, so A2 license would be alright for me, correct?
3. Is there a validity to the license, after which we must go through the entire process once again or is it just a one time thing?
4. Would the license be valid everywhere across EU, if I were to travel with the bike?
5. So the actual time span to have a bike license with range somewhere between 2-3 years, depending on the level, etc, correct?
Hey there!
So I made this video quite some time ago but think it's fairly accurate haha!
1. I'm based in Cork myself & there's been quite a few women on spins that I've been on. As far as I'm aware, they have their own group spins etc.
2. If you're 24, I'd recommend going straight for the full A licence. This means you can get any bike you want, no restrictions! You might not want a powerful bike but it's always good to have the option in the future.
3. There's currently no validity, it's the same as a car licence. Once you've got your full licence you're sorted for life provided you don't lose it for speeding or other offences!
4. I'm not 100% sure about travel in Europe but as far as I'm aware it does count. Our licences in Ireland are based off the EU system so you should be okay but best to check each country before travelling.
5. You could get a licence much quicker if you really wanted to be fair. Once you pass your theory test and finish your IBT you only need to ride for 6 months before you got for your test.
If you've got any other questions just let me know here or on Instagram & if you're interested in costs etc. I've got a video here: czcams.com/video/eRLR6Npv04Q/video.html
Sorry, you answered that, thanks for the great video
Rossa Healy no problem man! Hope it gets you on track to getting your licence! :)
Hello, very helpful can I get your opinion on automatic vs manual motorbikes and which one you prefer and which one you were using in the video? Thanks
He and most motorcycle enthusiasts use manual (geared) bikes, which tend to be more powerful and aerodynamic - though need more attention when riding. If you want to use your bike for more functional or commuting purposes, it's easier to use an automatic.
Just to add to all the questions.....
I'm 32 so eligible to apply for a category A licence under direct access noting I have never had any previous bike or bike licence.
After theory test completion and IBT training in category A can I then buy a category A bike 800 cc or 1100 cc to potentially ride for 2 years before taking practical. Can I purchase bike and compete IBT on it?
I know insurance is a whole different kettle of fish.
Hey man!
You're correct with everything you've said.
At 32 you apply for the Category A licence.
You can do your IBT on an instructors bike or your own. After the IBT you can ride and practice for 2 years but you only actually need 6 months before you can apply for the full test! 🤟
Hi buddy, thanks for that. Does Dublin recognise foreign motorbike license? Can I convert it to Dublin one or do I have to re-do everything like you just mentioned, thanks.
Hey man, if you're only visiting Ireland you can use whatever licence you have for up to 12 months.
If you plan on staying longer and you want to exchange your licence for an Irish one, here are the list of countries that can do so:
Australia
Gibraltar
Guernsey
Isle Of Man
Japan
Jersey
South Africa
South Korea
Switzerland
New Zealand
Taiwan
Ontario Province of Canada
Manitoba Province of Canada
Newfoundland & Labrador Province of Canada
British Columbia Province of Canada
Saskatchewan State in Canada.
Hope this helps man!
If I start riding at 18 do I just have to carry out 1 practical test? ie( I don't need to repeat it to move from 'A2' to 'A' catagory?? Thanks
Yup, if you're 18 and do the A2 practical test you don't need to do another one for the A category, you just need to do a progression module!
Hi Luke, great video. I was just wondering how long does the IBT take? I know it's 16 hours long but over how many days is that? How quickly can you get it done? That's all, thanks
He said it's over 2 days, 8h per day.
can u get a2 dirtbike when your 16 and is it different for a dirtbike or what if u want to change the wheels to supermoto so like for dirtbikes what lessons would u take is there any near tipperary?
and were are you allowed ride like fields? training tracks? forest trails? backroads?
Thank you so much for this video! It saved me hours of searching around online. Any advice on insurance? Where to go and how much to pay?
No problem man, glad it helped because I was so confused when I first started riding about licence restrictions etc. Insurance is a tricky one... What I've heard is that bikes are divided into categories or brackets depending on crash stats etc so basically bikes like the Fireblade, R1, any sports bike over 600cc are all generally very dear to insure as a first time rider. Even a Ninja 250 can be up to 1 grand in insurance! I am with Liberty for my bike insurance. My first quote was €889 on my CB400 for 3rd party only. After 1 year with no claims it's come down to €314 so I'm quite happy with that so far. Best advice is to ring around and see what people offer!
Thanks for the quick reply. You answered my question well :) Hopefully see you on the road some day :D
well lad. can you jump from A1 to A or do you have to get the A2 first? btw earned a sub great video
I'm pretty sure if you're under the age of 24 you'd have to go from A1 to A2 and then A2 to A! Thank you for the sub by the way :)
So in Ireland do you not do a an off road mod 1 test and then an on road mod 2 test? That's what we do in UK. Presumed it would be same as we're both in EU
Hey Mark.
Strange alright how it isn't standard across the whole EU but I think the UK does things a bit differently alright!
Did the rules change on getting a moped licence since this video went up is there a course or anything? Thanks
Sorry a better way of putting this do I need an ibt for a moped. Thanks
Does anyone have any clue about what kind of insurance prices I'd be looking at for a 18 year on one of the the sporty 125s .(aprillia, cbr, yzfr kind of things).
I haven't a clue to be honest man but if you got to liberty you can do an online quote and see what kind of prices are showing up!
I am from Scotland and it called a CBT can I use my CBT or do I need to do all that if I move over there?
That's a good question man, I'm not too sure. Maybe email the RSA ireland, they're the road safety authority and they might have an answer.
hello, saw your in tralee, just from the video, I live here myslef and was considering buying a motorbike. Parents think its too dangerous because of the rain we have in Ireland. What are your experiences on this?
Hey Tom! Bikes are dangerous & rain can certainly be a factor when it comes to motorbike crashes. I'm of the opinion that you could fall asleep tonight & not wake up so why not live your life & do the things you want, such as riding a motorbike. Then again, if you're living with your parents, I'm assuming it's their rules.
Realistically you only loose 10% of grip in the rain, just slow down as everyone should and rain won’t be a problem (unless you buy ur waterproof gear from bikergear.ie then it’s a big problem because it’s shite)
Seen as me mileage has dropped I spent nights doing up pros cons lists of a bike and can say Ill be going about getting the ball moving shapeish. Seems handyish if yea organised. Had to deal with NDLS and RSA a few times in past for truck stuff so Ive learnt to be organised they tend to handle your case quicker if your organised.
Yup, once you're all set up and organised it's grand! Best of luck with it pal :)
Lucky Luke Rides sound as a bell howd the irish ride out go, on the next one will motto dragon and grumpy bike wizard be out be cool to see the 3 yea up around the mid lands vlogging together like they do in the states(arson rides, do it with dan and jake, bakerx and so many others) (know its a fair owl trek for ye) could be something yea think about.
Hasn't happened yet man! It's on the 10th of September! :) Would be deadly to get some group vlogs though haha
Lucky Luke Rides ride safe dude and ill see yea out on the road one the days when im down your neck of the woods weither it be in a truck or on a bike ill give give a wave
Planning to get a bike and license in he coming year or two. 24 years old
Great vid. Are these steps sill the same now?
Hey Adam, thanks very much!
Yeah, these steps are still the same at the moment!
2020 you must be 24 now , have you got your A license yet :D ?
Where are you Luke? Where did you go?
dam thats a process...here in the states its test then you take the riding test...Mess up no licence.... the hardest part for ppl is doing a figure 8 in a box....can not let your feet touch do and its a fail...
Yeah I remember seeing the different drills that you lads have to do, including the figure of 8! You don't have any restrictions though so that's a plus! Thanks for watching man!
Hell nah, never skipping my irish friend! Good stuff. Gotta say 14 minutes is not quick doe lol. Luckily you're a watchable dude :)
Haha cheers Matty man! Yeah, it was a bit longer than I intended but didn't want to leave anything out! I really need to cut down the time on most my videos to be honest :P
I'm only 18 I have a 2004 Honda NSR 80cc bike can I do the test on it ?
If you're 18 & trying to do the A2 full licence test then the bike needs to be at least 395cc.
I wanted to get a 250/300cc first bike (was thiking R3) but the rules force me to get a 400cc for the test instead (fuck paying extra 175 quid for instructors bike)
They really didn't think this through to be fair! They're all over the place.
Nice video man!
I’m moving to Dublin in September so can I start taking the A1 driving lessons right when I arrive? Or do I need to wait and live there for some time ? ( I’m 15teen but I think you can start doing classes at 15teen and 6months am I right ?)
If I take the A1 licence I have to pass the theory exam again for the car driving licence or its just fine ?
Thank you!
Hey man, I think you'll have to wait until you're actually 16. I'm not 100% sure though!
If you want to get a car licence you'll need to do another theory test unfortunately!
You'll learn very soon Ireland is one big money grabbing country Haha!
Best of luck pal!
Lucky Luke Rides Thanks for the quick response men! But I still have a question, I have to live in the country some time before taking it? ( I think I saw in internet that you have to live in the specific country for about 185 days before taking it but I’m not sure! It’s why I’m asking!
Thanks pal!
