    In my area of Canada, you can just go write the learner test and walk out wild a learner license. This allows you to ride with someone that has a full license. Many people skip the training course, but I recommend it. Once you’re comfortable, you can go write the final test, followed by a road test in order to get your full license. But, some provinces have adopted a system where you have to start on a 250cc and work yourself up over time.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  Před 4 lety

      Ah right, I'd imagine that probably contributes to some early spills. Similar enough to here other than you have to work your way up the licenses unless you're over 24 in which case you can go direct to a big bike with the proper IBT training. I really do recommend the training to people too as if you don't learn in an industrial estate or field like me then you could be in trouble!!

    everything has changed so much since i did my tests, i always used to envy my grandads license, he had to drive a "cop to the shop" and back and could then drive everything... i think by the time my grandkids arrive and can drive then they probably will have self driving cars or something equally as weird, insurance for drivers will be like a 100k+ and they will frown on anyone who actually drives for themselves, some might even look at anyone who drives like a weirdo :P
    a lot of the ibt/cbt stuff is just basic stuff thats going to be used nearly every time you ride, unlike learning algebra in school, you will have a use for it after.
    back when i passed my test the training company i did it with were trying to get me to join them, must of impressed them with my riding... mind i had been riding for a while when i actually took my test.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm actually concerned about that, if anyone ever tried to take me off bikes they'd have a serious war on their hands and if insurance ever became stupid then I'd soon become an outlaw rider :P I don't mind if everyone else is in self driving crap tho that'd suit me down to the ground :)
      Exactly so it's well worth paying attention and actually trying....unlike school :P Only joking if anyone is reading this school is important .....
      Haha you were popping wheelies and all so? :P

    • @mrElpacas
      @mrElpacas Před 4 lety

      @@TheGorillaBiker yeah i do worry slightly about it myself tbh, i do think its likely though that insurance for "normal" drivers will be stupid compaired to self drive vehicles. hope it doesnt go that way but i think its a probablitys. high speed chase followed by a slow speed zimmer frame escape... mind thats if the electric self drive vehicles have the capacity to high speed chase by then :P
      yes school is good... just ignore algebra after school :D
      i rode really well and was helping out other learners, avoided a idiot driving on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend and didnt once drop my bike in the ice/snow, also one of my mcc friends instructed their and was saying to his boss how good i was etc etc i had a decent job at the time though and stupidly i didnt take them up on it, but you live and learn i suppose.
      i have no comments about wheelies i never pulled, i have no comment on helping a friend pull wheelies by using me as a counter weight either, if i did admit to any wheelies i didnt inhale :P and i didnt have wheelie relations with that motorbike... :D

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  Před 4 lety +1

      It most likely will sadly but I'd say they'll find a lot of people "forgetting" about insurance if it does ever come around. There were years when I was younger that my insurance was 2 months wages which is complete mental and predatory against young drivers/riders.
      Haha yup :P
      Ah nice! You def need to get back on a bike so :) I suggest a nice tasty Gorilla built shadow :P

      im hoping to get back on 2 wheels this year. funily the 600 would probably fit me better than the 750 the joys of being 6`4 with a 31 inseam lol.
      getting a bit tired of seeing badly done bobbers for sale. never felt safe with bobbers .. once had a unfortunate slow speed balls to wheel issue that put me off them for life. seen a few bikes close to my price range that ive been like nope it would be more cost sorting that out than its worth.
      i will proably be very tempted to buy a bit of a complete shed, sort it out respray and detail it decently and start saving for the next one to trade up with. do get the odd leads now and again too its just getting lucky. its not like the old days when you could pick up a doer up for a 100.

      Yeah as for gear, fully agree, I wear thick jeans for the most part so i might consider on hot days leaving off the leather pants (as you are unlikely to land legs first in an accident), But the one thing I would never get on a bike without is boots, leather jacket, and gloves, seen far too many very serious burns related to coming off a bike. Even 30 mph can tear through most clothes. Legs arnt too bad, they there isint all that much weight so you wont get burnt badly, but if you land on your arms, elbows, shoulders, front, back. Thats gonna be a very very bad day.
      Any recommendations on brands for gear? (especially helmets as ive seen some very dodgy ones around, I quite like the helmets where the whole front can flip up if you know any of those ones that are good)
      Any tips for a starting bike and insurance? Was thinking a honda cbf 125 (Ill do my test on the instructors bike so I can get an A2 licence, heard its near impossible to get insured on a bike for the A2 test at my age). I already have a full car licence and car insurance in my own name if that helps with getting the costs down.
      As I said though, thanks for all the info and taking the time to respond, theres very few people around that ride that I can get information off, dad used to ride but its nearly 20-25 years ago, so all information is appreciated greatly :)
      As for scares, had enough of those haha, driving the r513 to limerick every day, horrible road with trucks coming around the corners on the wrong side of the road. Takes a lot to make me jump after driving that road for so long.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  Před 3 lety

      No bother.
      Ahhh I'd highly recommend not wearing jeans, the issue with them is the chemicals made to dye them etc are very bad if they get stuck in your legs during an accident. Any kevlar type jeans are good tho and a lot of them are very affordable. RST do Kevlar jeans from what I remember. And yes any off without any gear is baaad but I won't lecture as I squid sometimes. You know the risks when you do already :) But I do use my Kevlar jeans when I'm not wearing other gear most of the times, a nurse once said to me the jeans had done more damage in the accident than the fall and slide due to them chemicals. I have checked this with multiple sources since and it holds true.
      HJC, if they're out of budget MT Helmets do very highly rated cheaper helmets. Both brands do flip up. Check the SHARP rating for them before you buy. :)
      CBF125 is a great bike, varadero 125 etc, anything from the big boys. Just don't go too expensive as you'll be changing it in no time I would say. MT125 is a cool little bike too but they'd be more expensive as they're newer. Get a year or 2 no claims and you'll be laughing. Advanced rider certs also help.
      No hassle and best of luck with it all :)

      @@TheGorillaBiker Ill take your advice and go with the Kevlar jeans, I actually remember hearing something similar to what you said. Didnt realise there were Kevlar jeans for riding. How is kevlar for a top on hot days? Seen a few kevlar hoodies and shirts on motorcycleshop.ie, or would I be better off sticking with a proper leather riding jacket?
      Id say I wont be staying on the 125 for long as you said, get my year of noclaims and go to a cbr 350 or something, then work my way up to a 600/650 once I have money to burn in fuel, a 650 is plenty quick for me xD. Only reason im going for the 125 at the moment is fuel economy and insurance, If i had my way id get a cbr 350 first, not a stupid amount of power but enough that I can get out of trouble if I need to.

      It really depends on the person, as someone who trains people in the operation of very dangerous equipment for my job I would approach bikes the same way. I always give someone clearly nervous who hasn't worked with machine x more time. So yes, I feel as if more patience should have been given. My wife did a 3 day course over here and it sounded like it was very good for accommodating everyone there's skill level. Obviously not having been there in person I can't say how/why the trainer did what they did. As a complete beginner you should be given time, space and patience.

It was after lunch that the atmosphere changed. He resented it and used it to break me down. I left early and didn't want to risk my safety.
