  • Dave Marcoux, then goalie coach of the Calgary Flames, demonstrates a drill for CBC's Think Hockey segment that is a staple of GBHA goalie skills and just about all other goalie training. (The only drawback is the demonstrating goalie's exaggerated and mechanical movement.) The coach assigns numbers to points on the ice, then calls the numbers out to the goalie, who skates from number to number as if each one represented a scoring threat. At the GBHA (as elsehwere) we draw the numbers on the ice with a Sharpie marker, and use that flexibility to focus on lots of different scenarios; Marcoux uses the same numbers and placements every time (he calls them 'the Seven Zones') and makes his goalies memorise them, which is why the CBC overlaid the numbers on the broadcast. I also like to incorporate a shot by stationing shooters at one or more of the numbers, and having the goal face a shot when appropriate, or a pass from one shooter to another for a one-timer. Whether it's done as a pure skating and movement exercise or as a skate-to-shot drill, this is a foundational setup in all modern goalie instruction. In the words of Herb Brooks, "Get used to it, because we'll be doing this a lot."
