When Saladin repeats his name it has a double impact. The first is who he is, the second is what his name means. It translates to “righteousness of religion”. And damn if that isn’t powerful

A king may move a man.
A father may claim a son.
That man can also move himself, and only
then does that man truly begin his own game.
Remember, howsoever you are played, or
by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone.
Even though those who presume
to play you be kings or men of power.
When you stand before God, you cannot say,
"But I was told by others to do thus",
or that virtue
"was not convenient at the time".
This will not suffice.
Remember that.

"Nothing....Everything." that line summarizes the entire film. I couldn't understand it years ago, but now it made sense.
Jerusalem can either be the Holy Land for all, or it can be just a city like everything else. You can be a person who follow orders blindly, or a person who will always do the right thing. You can be a King who conquers, or a King who sought for peace. Either way, the choice is in your hands. At the end of the day, it is you who knows what is true and what is evil.
Yes. For some, Jerusalem is a city of land. For others, it is a state of mind. And the movies asks you: What is Jerusalem for you?
I went from my father making me watch a movie with him when i was younger to rewatching this video every time I feel lost or feel like giving up, this movie is and will always sit with me and i am thankful for my lord and father
When he said : "nothing" and then "everything" he meant that it was nothing for him cause he realized that it was just a bunch of stones, dust and desert. But when he said everything he pointed back to his men which meant that it was everything for them, it was a holy place for which thousand will die to.

Just rewatched this with my dad and I forgot how much I loved it god it’s perfect the entire film is a perfect hero’s journey to show us that he was so good and pure hearted he wouldn’t even have a man who would kill him not be killed because it was a “lesser evil”

“By the word ‘Religion’ I’ve seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination we call ‘the will of god’ I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness - what God desires - [pointing at his head then heart] is here and here and what you decide to do everyday you will be a good man...or not”
Is the best quote of the film and Are words that I live by showing that religion like all things is good in moderation but being “Holy” or “righteous” in the eyes of god isn’t dictated by the church or god and what they tell you but by what YOU choose to do as a man........

Gloriously moving film. Bravo. The history of the Crusades is extraordinary. The film sums up the end of the second Crusades nicely and surprisingly accurately. Read Runciman’s History vol 1-3. You’ll be surprised how detailed and accurate the dialogue in the film is at times. I loved seeing the relationship between the film and the history play out. Balin and Saladin were both men of honor. Their truce at the end was the great irony of the historical episode because the compassion of it all was mostly lost to the trauma of the fall of Christendom in the Frankish East. Fun fact, Saladin was a Kurd. Go history!
This was the Third Crusade not Second, also the Siege of Jerusalem at the end was fake the real Balian was a Fat Mid Aged Lord who raised the white flag early on.
@@bearislandthuglife3463 Nope it was neither. This was between the second and third crusades. The Christians retained lands in Palestine from 1099-1291. The fall of Jerusalem was 1187, and this was what kicked off the third crusade.
And Balian was in fact more interesting than in the film. He was a local noble of the KoJ lord of Ibelin who married king Baldwin IV step mother Queen Maria Comnena of Constantinople.
From this marriage he became one of the most powerful nobles in the KoJ joining King Guy's disastrous attempt to relieve the city of Tiberius resulting in the battle of Hattin. Balian and the Count of Tripoli (Played by Jeremy Irons and mistakenly called "Tiberius" in the movie) both broke out of Saladin's encirclement at Hattin, though Balian did it in such a way as to save many of the infantry as well as the cavalry, gaining him much influence in the future.
Balian then made a deal with Saladin to extract his wife and children out of Jerusalem before the siege if he didn't defend it. Saladin agreed, but when he arrived he was persuaded to remain and defend the city. He sent to tell Saladin this was the case, and Saladin agreed to allow his wife and children safe passage regardless, possibly because he didn't want to piss off the Byzantines at this stage by killing a member of the royal family.
Balian then defended the city courageously. However, eventually the walls fell and the Muslims were about to break in and slaughter the populace as Saladin had promised them they could. However Balian rode out to meet him under a truce while the battle raged. His terms were initially refused by Saladin who could see his banners already flying over the walls. However, at that moment, the defenders of the city, with a huge effort drove the Muslims back and threw them off the walls. Balian then threatened to slaughter all Muslims in the city, Destroy the holy Rock and then sally out and kill as many Muslims as possible. Saladin agreed to ransom the Christians of the city, with any unable to pay being sold into slavery.
Balian would then go on to represent the knights of the KoJ when Richard III arrived, gaining yet more influence, and when the king of Jerusalem Henry of Champagne died later, Balian's heirs would rule the remnant of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Cyprus.
Legendary character in history.

Remeber, How so ever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone!!!
The wisest dialogue: Near the walls of Jerusalem negotiated Balian with Saladin about the surrender of the city: On the end of their conversation, Balian asked: "What is Jerusalem worth"? Saladin with disrespect: "Nothing" Then he turns around and goes towards his people, but suddenly he stops, clenches and raises his fists, and says: "Everything!" As a private person called Saladin, he did not care about it. But as the ruler of Muslims, he had no choice but to conquer the holy city of Jerusalem.
One of the greatest movies ever made. This vid captures nearly half of the themes that made this movie great. You're great at what you do!
so very beautifully made, as usual. wondering how would anyone properly watch this without shedding any tears..
