    You see this? This right here? This is what happens when you don’t forget that the hero of the story is the rightful heir to the throne. But y’know, sometimes writers think it’s better for the hero to be absolutely useless in the climax of the story and than dismiss him completely at the end, while making a kid in a wheelchair king.

    Aragorn is such an amazing and well written character. Before The Lord of the Rings he aided both Gondor and Rohan under the alias of Captain Thoronguil and led both to victory against their enemies with low casualties, showing his skills as a leader. He traveled through the lands of the southerners, Harad, and got to now the actual people; both the good and the bad. Him and Arwen waited 47 years to get married, because papa Elrond would only allow them to if Sauron was destroyed and Aragorn crowned king; a feat he thought would be impossible, but eventually came to pass. He only entered the city as king after the steward (Faramir) gave him permission to, because he didn't want the people to see him as a conqueror taking control, but rather as a wanted king returning to his people. (It is likely he released the oath-breakers for a similar reason. An army of undead ghosts would have probably sent the wrong message.) When the Hobbits meet him in Bree, he makes it clear how for years he has longed for friendship and simple companionship during his long travels, but his rough, foul, unsavoury, hard, scuffed features were against him. He doubted himself after the disaster of Amon Hen, but Legolas and Gimili stuck with him and reassured him on his chosen path. He refused Éowyn's affections because he was committed to Arwen, and because he knew she didn't really love (at least not for the right reasons). After the war, he exalts the Hobbits, gave Drúadan Forest to the Woses as their own, allowed Rohan to exist as an independent Kingdom, formed a peace treaty with Harad, and made the Shire an independent state within the kingdom, and made it so that no big-folk could enter the Shire without the hobbits' permission, a rule he abide to himself. Alas, sadly his father died when he was an infant, and his mother died before her time from grief when he was a young man. Aragorn is an epic character, not because he was great, but because he was good. A good man, shaped by hardship and many long years, into a good king. His friends were the flame and hammer that shaped the iron into the sword.

    in fantasy there are very few morally pure characters with very little darkness that are actually interesting. aragorn rarely shows weakness. he makes no attempts on the ring like boromir and is a great leader and king with only a few faults. and yet he still is incredible. that’s how you can write a character who’s relatable yet also pure. not everyone has to be morally grey in fantasy to be a “good” character

He's a fictitious character but even were he real he would have challenges in modern society and probably not be accepted as is either. Aragorn is the reason I started loving Lord of the Rings at age eight. Aragorn means more to me than any other (fictional) character I've met in my years of reading since. Well, except for book-Faramir, who has inadvertently become much of what I hope for in a future husband. And Eowyn, who reminds me a little of myself in her darker moments and who I hope to become in her greatest ones. Aragorn represents to me what his name while growing up in Rivendell, Estel, means: "hope, trust, a temper of mind, steady, fixed in purpose, difficult to dissuade, and unlikely to fall into despair or abandon its purpose". I've read the trilogy seven times since that first reading. That first time, I went through it very slowly and nearly gave it up at parts. I was as a young reader who still regularly consumed Junie B. Jones books (ugh). Reading then was solely meant for convenience and entertainment. Never before had a book challenged my mind or broadened my soul. Never before had I had to rise to meet a book on its level. The words were archaic and most decidedly unsimplified. I was a stranger in a foreign, keenly beautiful, jarring world. There was moment that it all changed. That moment gave me momentum even to get past my first reading of the Council of Elrond. It was the unexpected smile that got me and the promise that kept me. He was ready to die for a stranger. I saw a King worthy of my allegiance that was both powerful and commanding, gentle and kind. I saw what real love was - costly, precious, selfless. In time, I came to discover that Aragorn really was a glimpse of Truth, a glimpse of my Savior, my King, my Hope. As I follow the One that Aragorn is only a dim reflection of, I hope that same love, courage and unwavering hope can become true of me. I stand now in a far greater fairy story than Estel, and I know how the story ends. So did Tolkien - he called it eucatastrophe. The Lord of the Rings still tugs at my heart, but now I know why. The stories are true. All things are being made new. In light of this, that fantastical courage and bold hope doesn't have to be fictional.
    'That you are a stout fellow,' answered Strider; 'but I am afraid my
    only answer to you, Sam Gamgee, is this. If I had killed the real Strider, I
    could kill you. And I should have killed you already without so much talk.
    If I was after the Ring, I could have it - NOW!'
    He stood up, and seemed suddenly to grow taller. In his eyes gleamed a
    light, keen and commanding. Throwing back his cloak, he laid his hand on the
    hilt of a sword that had hung concealed by his side. They did not dare to
    move. Sam sat wide-mouthed staring at him dumbly.
    'But I am the real Strider, fortunately,' he said, looking down at them
    with his face softened by a sudden smile. 'I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and
    if by life or death I can save you, I will.'

    The best part about Aragorn that he refused to take the one ring from Frodo in Amon Hen. He knew that he will fall to the power of the ring, he knew of his limitations yet and choose to act in the best way he could. He accepted his role as a unit of a fellowship. He's not the main hero of the story, not the chosen one despite his royal origin. He's the king but he fought tooth and nail to earn the right to rule. Absolute best of examples. Epitome of Hero. He knows from the very beginning that he is heir to the throne of Gondor, and though he does not oppose the idea, it is not his priority. He just seems to kind of... go where the wind takes him, finds new people to care for, and attempt to die for. He was a leader first, then a King. The thing I love about Aragorn’s story is that he is not driven by his want to be king but avoids it. Seen many people linking it to Game of Thrones, and I agree. The characters that should be kings are the ones who’s only actions are not to become kings, but for the better of the world, which I think Tolkien’s message was from the story as a whole. Aragorn is the selfless leader who fights alongside the men and forms a bond, over Denethor who allows other men to fight for him.

      @ravenstrategist1325 Před 4 lety +9

      @G E T R E K T 905 Certainly, I will try to be as concise as I can. Sauron returned to Mordor when he was a young man and thus he spent the vast majority of his life fighting him, we are talking about many long decades since Dethetor is very old in the book. Denethor fought like a lion for all this time, making Sauron pay for every inch of ground taken. In his reign Gondor was very organized and by necessity very militarized, also the Rammas Echor was built in his reign, a massive defensive wall that protected the Pellenor fields, a vast agricoltural plain, and Minas Tirith itself from attack. He recovered a palantir and for a long time he actually succeded to use it to thwart Sauron's plans, however this daily mental fights against Sauron took a tool on him even though he never surrendered. When Osgiliath is taken by Sauron, Denethor never sent Faramir to take it back and immediatly asked Rohan for help, Rohan was btw already moving to support them, Theoden never hesitated in the book, there was no pointless drama, the first thing he did after helm's deep was too gather an army to help Gondor even before he recieved the request for aid. Denethor DID break when Faramir was wounded, then his self control shuttered but never in the absurd way that was done in the movie, he never call to abbandon the defenses, he simply said "die wherever you see fit".

    In the books, there was a belief in Gondor that "the hands of a King are the hands of a Healer." And so, Aragorn went around the Houses of Healing, nursing the wounds of his injured comrades and soldiers who were maimed by the Nazgul weapons. He was learned in the art of Elvish medicine, so the Nazgul wounds would heal better in his care.
