  • "Do you know what lies in the holy land? A new world.
And there at the end of the world, you are not what you are born, but what you have within yourself to be"
One of my all-time favourite films and periods of history!
I love to study the Crusader period, such a fascinating, horrendous, and emotionally invested time in history. I think this film captures it brilliantly.
The real Balian of Ibelin was born in the holy land rather than France. He did fight in the battle of Hattin and managed to survive the disastrous defeat of the Crusader armies. After being granted permission to return to Jerusalem to rescue his family and thereafter leave with them, the people begged him to stay and fight for them. In doing so, he went back on his word to Saladin and led the defence of the city, repelling Saladin and his vast army for a few days. In October AD 1187, the city was surrendered, before further bloodshed. Those who could pay the ransom to Saladin would be set free to the coast, such as Balian (who continued to fight for Jerusalem in the Third Crusade with Richard Lionheart) and those who could not be sold into slavery.
Imagine successfully making the already difficult pilgrimage to Jerusalem, that you find yourself amidst a siege of the great city!

    my lord this is perfect
me and my dad are huge Ridley Scott fans we have loved every one of his films and i remember seeing another different edit on this film and going
"my god why have we not we seen that one yet!" and so we watched it and its now one of if not our favorite of his films which is quite sad because this and his Robin hood are the two of his films i hear the least about and they are my two favorites!
i loved how you broke the video into the 3 different parts
the first being about Balian initially going to the holy lands to cleanse himself of sin and that of his wife's you learn and see how he sees this strange world thats caught between the jewish muslim and christian faiths
then the second segment grows him he now improves this world as best he can and we see how the conflict begins to grow and how he does as well begin to grow and change as a man to face those conflicts we see him became a true holy man someone who does not fight for a church or faith or king but his people and his principles
then in the third segment the battle finally comes the dam finally breaks as war erupts between these radical clashing of faiths between the Muslim and Christian world and Balian does the righteous good and holy thing to do
he does not defend the city
    nor the king or queen
    nor the church
    he defends the people
i have read all the theory's about the Hospitaler knight (played by the legendary and remarkable David Thewlis) being an angel and i agree with them in many cases there are scenes with him that defy explanation like how he visits him in the desert and then disappears or how he says he will tell his father what he has become and how he talks of religion not as this radical faith or something to follow or practice but rather as something to embody and therefore live by i mean even his character is given no name in the credits he is just stated as "the Hospitaler Knight"
in fact one of my favorite quotes ever in history and my favorite within this film is the piece of advice he gives Balian once Balian tells him that god does not speak to him and that he is "outside gods grace" WHICH is also a hint that he is an angel because his reply was "I have not heard that" as if he personally knows god and is saying that God has told him no such thing
anyway he follows up with this masterpiece
"I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here [points to head] and here [points to heart] and what you decide to do every day, you will be a good man - or not."
this is my one of my favorite quotes ever and it is one that i do my best to live by
this edit was by far the best ive seen the way you seamlessly cut the music and scenes together as well as the cuts to the same perfect frame shots throughout the film i also loved how you used different versions as well i only watched the theatrical release at first and there is almost nothing of sybillas son becoming king in that version and many stunning scenes were cut from it as well
you deserve far more subscribers than you have and this is a masterpiece well done my friend I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU DO NEXT!

Perfect analysis! You are spot on. I think Kingdom of Heaven is a well known piece of film, but is perhaps shadowed by Ridley Scott’s Gladiator which is also a masterpiece, but is different and less of a historical cultural period based masterpiece like this is. I love both a lot, and they are two of my favourite films. Robin Hood is alright, bur certainly not up there with those two for me. I like Klondike, tv mini series as well about the gold rush with Richard Madden in it.
The crusader period is so fascinating and rich in culture and historical events. Considering this is a short period in terms of time, it really is significant. The fact that the first crusade to retaking Jerusalem turned out to be a success is fathomable considering what challenges laid before them.
      Cool fact to add:
Here in England, I was part of an excavation of an estate home that belonged to the Knights Hospitallers which is also very cool!
This was so good to read and thank you so much for the brilliant comment and praise :)

People should read the true Balian of Ibelin. He was far more heroic than what the movie shows. His portrayal in Kingdom of Heaven was honestly overly fictionalized. The guy wasn't some bastard child of a baron and lived as a blacksmith. He was a highborn. Two things that the movie did right was Balian indeed led the defense of Jerusalem and negotiated with Saladin. He also respected by both sides (Christians and Muslims). Did you know that Balian was in Hattin when Saladin crushed the Crusaders? He and some small troops manage to charge and break free to escape the battle and avoid total destruction. He also never run away with Sibylia like in the movie. Instead he went with Richard the Lionheart back to Jerusalem to help end the crusade. Saladin even gave him a castle and few territories to compensate with Balian.
Edit: For people asking for a book. You can read Knight of Jerusalem by Helena P. Schrader.

@@galibedits7481 Balian came from very little, and one only has to see how people respected him (even Saladin respected him) to know that he was a man worthy of knowing. You can be in awe of great men without putting down other great men.
Balian was a fantastic father and husband. He married a wife of a different culture and far greater consequence, but they managed to make it work in a society where marriages often did not work even when people came from the same backgrounds. Two of his children named their sons after him. That's proof of how much they loved him.
When he came to Jerusalem after Hattin, he only wanted to get his family to safety. The people begged him to stay and defend them because they literally saw him as their only hope. Can you imagine how he felt at that moment, to have barely escaped back to his young family, knowing that the only home he'd ever had was lost, but then having to choose between doing the right thing (and almost certain death) or protecting and staying with those he loved the most?

Sadly Baldwin never actually ordered Balian to defend Jerusalem or asked him to marry his sister. He simply took the task of defending because he realized he was the only somewhat competent military tactician left in the entire city. Although Baldwin and many high ranking nobles in Jerusalem had s plan to ask Balian to marry his sister so not fully out of nowhere.

At the end of the battle, Salahudin allowed Balian and others safe passage to leave, but a monetary price had to be paid per head. When the money was depleted, and the price could not be paid for their freedom, the remaining individuals were taken as slaves to work off the price.

I’m guessing you haven’t seen the director’s cut. Ridley Scott was so pissed off at how the theatrical version was cut up, he disowned/disavowed it and re-edited to his original vision

    • @aurelian7831
      @aurelian7831 Před rokem +6

The Director's cut is the only version to watch. This is the movie that Ridley Scott wanted. The stupid studio executives chopped it up and edited badly. They thought the movie was to long and audiences would not want to watch a long movie. Their version was garbage and died at the box office. The Director's cut took a life of its own and became successful on DVD and streaming and word of mouth. One of the best movie depiction of medieval warfare ever. The story is parr fictional, but the events happened and the characters are real.

Their quality will be known among their enemies before ever they meet them, Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub. As a Christian, I would call you a brother. My New Earthly SANCTUARY 🙏 I've watched this so many times recently, I don't care if it's not 100% historically accurate (as some people bicker about here) because it brings me inner peace with hope in my lifelong search for God and Heaven ... and in my older years with failing health it's calming viewing to my heart and soul ❤ And as an epic movie it's just absolutely FABULOUS, thee best I've seen in such a LONG time ❤ Gratitude for the Upload 🌞

I have not seen the movie, but I have known the need for peace with God. I suppose God found me and not I found Him. Whatever causes you to resist the God of the Holy Bible is that which resists your search for peace. Jesus said to His disciples that he would leave them with his peace, not the peace of this broken world, and broken men, but God’s peace, peace unbreakable. Your search for God begins and ends with Him.
