Believe it or not, School of Rock (2003) with Jack Black is the reason I’m a guitar player and love rock n roll to this day!
Having worked with you, this fully makes sense, and I fully support it.
@@MONKEYMANG1 Thanks man! Honestly, this film holds up to this day and is still relevant on the state of rock music to this day. It’s a movie I always go back to remember why I started and escape the BS in this industry.
Agree that this was the glaring omission from Glenn's list.
I was waiting this movie to pop up. Massive disappointment 😅
"And the legend,
Of the rent,
Was way hard core!!"
😂👍
Last time I was this early Gibson was still a great company 😂
Good thing they teamed up with another shitty company aha
that's funny....you don't look a day over 100 years old.
Oh, I remember 79 like it was yesterday 😂
"Who would win in a wrestling match? Lemmy or God?"
That's a trick question. Lemmy is God!
Chuck Norris obviously, He wins everything
Still quote this line constantly lol
Lemmy went to the Virgin Islands now their called the Islands.
Zappa
Crossroads was one of my favorite guitar movies as a kid. All the Ry Cooder slide stuff, Steve Vai duel at the end.
Indeed, this is a great guitar movie, but since it's far more blues than rock & roll, it would be better suited to a different list. Also, Robert Johnson was a real person and this list is for movies about made up bands.
@@FFVison At what point did I suggest it should be on the list? Spoiler alert. Eugene Lightning Boy Martone and Jack Butler are not real dudes.
@@ICACJ Eh, good points. Kickass movie too. Then you get to see Steve Vai beat himself and lose his soul in the process :-P.
Rik Mayall was a hero of mine. Bad News is fantastic. So Sad he's gone.
Ric Mayall was a god of comedy, WOOF!
@@myopicautisticmetal9035 Best quote from Alan B’stard (played by Rik) *So, what IS the difference between a paying tenant and a rent boy?*
Bad news for you and you and you and you
Burning looting raping and a shooting
Airheads gives me soo much nostalgia.
Lemmy: I was editor of the school magazine!
Haha lemmy was a nice touch in that movie
I was expecting a mention to Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny
Probably because it is about a real band Tenacious D, not a fictional
@@janossouza6117 Jack black is a better singer than actor, and he's a fucking good actor!!!
This Is Spinal Tap and School of Rock for me!
I second both of those!
Spinal tap isn’t a fictional band though
I was nurtured by the Blues Brothers movie, which I knew line by line, in french (baguette speaking here), when I was 5, in 1993. While every other kid knew Star Wars, E.T., Gremlins, and other french classics, I was obessed by the Blues Brothers. Even sang one of their songs in kindergarten, in front of the whole school. Kids were shocked because it was not a kid song, not in french, and looong.
The adults were really surprised. When my gran came to take me back after school, they came to her "But, Mrs, he knows the Blues Brothers ?! How ?"
She just replied "we have a VCR".
" All You need is cash " - The Rutles -
Yes!!! The Rutles should definitely be in this list!!
For sure. And the DVD has a brilliant commentary by Eric Idle over the film. There was one day when they were filming outdoors in London and a whole lot of people thought it was the actual Beatles reformed and were trying to get a look at them, but what they failed to realise was that George Harrison was there the whole time (dressed as a reporter with glasses and a wig) and they didn't even notice him.
'Still crazy' definitely underated
Agreed. I must have watched it 10-15 times and I bought the soundtrack album. Yes, there actually was one.
I was actually watching this list to make sure he included it. That was my movie that I expected him to leave off and be mad when he did, but Glenn didn't disappoint.
“This Is Spinal Tap” is, by far, the greatest music movie and needs to be seen by every musician. “Airheads” has always been a favorite of mine. In fact, I actually like Adam Sandler’s role in this. It’s not his usual sophomoric yelling that he thinks seems to be funny. He plays dumb pretty well.
A group of friends and I gathered to watch spinal tap soon after it came out on video. We were all musicians and road crew. The movie started and we all laughed for a little while, until it started hitting home. The comments from different people in the room “that happened to me” , “ hey, that’s like what happened on xxxxxx tour, remember that ?”, on it went and the truth became clear. Nearly everything in that movie had occurred in real life, to at least one of us in that room, or a band we were working with.
The mockumentary.
Was.
Real.
When I was a kid, ‘Eddie and the Cruisers’ was on HBO nonstop. “On the Dark Side” is still a banger.
It sure his. Brought the soundtrack album back in the '80s. Didn't see the film until it was uploaded on CZcams.
This is one of my favourite movies ever! Sure it isn't something that hits all the elements of classic film and my opinion is largely sentimental but there are some great things in there. Also, top notch soundtrack
Ah, Eddie and the Cruisers, that was a rock n roll band for the ages! I loved that movie when I was a kid, watched it with my dad who was a Bluegrass musician! Tom Beringer and Joey Pants!
Holy shit! I remember watching this back in the early 90's or late 80's while ditching school! Nothing else was on! Used to have terrible vhs copies of movies that we'd go through when nothing else was on! Each tape would hold 3 movies roughly! Was classic shit in there too like this one, Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop, The Highlander, Terminator, American Werewolf in London, Purple Rain, etc.
Same here except now I can't stand the music or the movie. Yea, I sorta wore it out 🤣
Don't forget in Rock Star, Myles Kennedy (Mayfiels Four, Alter Bridge and Slash) also had a small cameo near the end of the film, singing off with Mark. He showed off the range and strength his voice could be at the time, yet still has that voice today!!
Scott Pilgrim, while not exactly a rock and roll film the use of the band and music is pretty banging and I love the commitments for a proper rock and roll film.
SOOOOOOOOOOO SAD!
That movie managed to capture the feel of live music (without the tedious setting up and breaking down).
Cannibal Corpse in that one Jim Carrey movie was unexpected but welcoming
Awesome video, good change of pace. Thanks dude
This was awesome, thanks Glen, I've missed a few from this list, the British stuff is always the best.
Nice pace to this video. Much better than many Top Ten videos I've suffered through. I can't argue with any of your choices because I've seen only half of them and, when I saw this title, I hoped the ones I've seen would be included... and they were! I had my most serious doubts about "That Thing You Do." As a drummer, one of the reasons I liked that movie was because the drummer made the band better despite the Jam Nazi. Again, nice job on this. *cheers* from New York State.
I remember liking Detroit rock city back in the day
Seeing Bad News as #1 just makes me ever so happy :D
Love it! What an awesome idea, man
Some great choices and a few i need to check out. Great video!
The Commitments was brilliant.
Andrew Strong was only 18 years old. What a voice! He couldn't really deal with fame though, which is a shame 'cos he's an incredible singer.
Theres a gag in father ted when the priests are protesting a smut film (and drawing attention to it) and the younger priest says 'are we sure about this, this film could be like the commitments'.
Great list. I've seen all but one of these. The world needs more rock movies!
Hell yeah, great video Glenn! I would love more videos like this one, keep up the great work.
I am REJOICING that Still Crazy is on this list!
One of my all time faves!!!
I think this was my fav video of urs need to see some of these films x
Love this list!! I'm so glad still crazy is on the list as well as the commitments!! But School of Rock should definitely be in there too 👍🎸
Hey Glenn - Love the channel and great video! Here's one that needs to be on your next list: Thunderstruck (from 2004)
This was a fun one as well. Thanks Glenn!!!
Great video! Very entertaining.
Lol I still use to this day, “that was my twin brother Trevor” when I’m accused of doing something. More Bad News is full of funny stuff like this, and the accompanying audio album is just as funny.
GLEEEEEENNNNN!
Was wondering if you planned on doing any conversations with other producers/engineers on the channel soon. Would love to see maybe Jamie King and you just geeking out for a bit.
Also, Backbeat was awesome. I know it's not a fictional band, but the raw, unrehearsed sound was awesome and Dave Grohl on drums is always a good thing!
Great video, Glen!
This is refreshing... Do more videos like this in the future Glenn... Maybe top 10 of your favorite autobiography movie like Bohemian Rhapsody or The Doors
thnks to share Glen, the last movie on your list: Bad News, I never knew this one and enjoyed watching it .
As a screenwriter who follows you, this is pretty cool, I love rock'n'roll as much as I love movies. I even have an idea for a rock mockumentary: a guitarist who got his tongue cut in a fight and now uses his guitar to "communicate" xd
Nice Top Ten! Saw at least seven of thes films! Greets From Cologne
I love The Young Ones/Bottom etc. Had never heard of Bad News until now. Brilliant! Cheers for the recommendation!
I can't believe ive never heard of the bad news movies. I love mockumentarys alot. Thanks for sharing.
I own almost all those movies but still crazy sticks with me! Thanks Glen 🤘🏻
Nice to see Airheads get some love, what an underrated film
Should have rated higher IMHO.
Great idea for a video my good man!
Before I watch the video - 'Rock Star' with Mark Wahlberg. This is probably my favorite.
Kick ass sound track
So glad you listed Still Crazy! I knew you'd do Bad News cuz of your shirts - their Cassette tape was also so hilarious. My list (not that anyone asked or cares) : Spinal Tap, Bad News, Still Crazy, Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, Times Square, Rock n Roll Nightmare (with Thor!), Crossroads, American Pop, The Harder They Come, Smithereens...number 1 would have to be Rock n Roll High School tho...just barely over spinal tap and bad news
I remember the bad news tape had a bit about not finding pants tight enough so they were going to paint their legs black haha
I've only seen a couple of these, thanks for the suggestions! A couple movies about fictional bands that I really liked were Josie and the pussycats and blues brothers. Also, I know your list is fictional bands but Rock N Roll High School with the Ramones is one of my favorite movies ever!
i was trying to remember airheads!!! thanks glenn!
Bad news!! Too few people know about that one, glad to see it getting some love here. The studio scenes are pure gold!
Thanks for that video. I only seen Spinal Tap from your list, even though I thought I watched every rock n roll movie on earth.
Great top 10! and quite a few I didn't know about, I most definitely gonna check them out, i really like those kind of films (spinal tap is my all time favorite) and I would like to add: Tenacious D The pick of destiny! That movie is hilarious!
Still Crazy! Was wondering if I was the only one remembering this. Such a great cast too.
Great list of movies Man
tnx Glen seen some of them others not, great referals. Nothing better than a good music vid
makes my day I remember playing risk and watching one of these.
Some have not seen thanks alot really
It should have been 11 Rock'n'Roll Movies:D:D
Dude, I love this. Airheads is its awesome, That Thing You Do came out when I was really discovering music, Spinal Tap was just hilarious but the music was awesome and in my opinion is required viewing. Rock Star came out when I joined my first band, and School of Rock was just epic. Never heard of Still Crazy so I’m gonna watch that!
One rock movie I LOVE and I know I’ll get flack for it is Rock of Ages. I just really like how they incorporated and blended songs together. Also, Didn’t Jeff Scott Soto sing a bunch of the songs in Rock Star?
My favourite is Still Crazy. I watch it all the time.
Glad to see we share some film taste, and I also got to learn of some films I'd never heard of. Score!
Love "Still Crazy"! Stumbled on it on VHS at a friends house back in '99. Still listen to the soundtrack to this day!
When More Bad News has the same cast as The Young Ones you know it has to be comedy gold
Commitments is legendary. So good!
It made me happy to see Still Crazy on your list. Very underrated movie.
So happy to see Still Crazy on this list, always surprised by how few people have seen it.
So glad to see Still Crazy in your list - it’s my favourite film. The Pizza delivery 🤣🤣🤣
Great list. I love The Young Ones and Bottom so will definitely be checking out Bad News.
I assume you are aware of Guest House Paradiso? Not a rock'n'roll movie but some great laughs.
Pheeb, hello! Lol I love Guest House Paradiso. Such a hilarious and underrated movie. The scene with Simon Peggs nipple ring had me in tears
I only knew The Commitments, which was an absolute must-watch as an amateur band at the time, all the struggles were so real. And I had heard of Spinal Tap, but didn't know any of the others. So this is a great list for me to look up and watch on the too many evenings at home these days. Thanks!
Cool. goona have to check these out. I'm about to watch Deathgasim. Also have you seen Lords of Chaos.? i thought that was good.
Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart, the guy that does the singing voice in Rock Star, was truly a gift.
Steelheart thank you ❤️ I found this video only to find out the name lol!
Something not so fictional that I just had the chance to watch was Anvil! The Story of Anvil
That was great!
My old band had the pleasure of supporting them a few years ago here in the UK! Fantastic gig, and Lips can tell stories for days!
Great documentary !
Not since Anvil have I seen a lead singer sing through his guitar pickups!
I loved that film. I spent the first half of it saying, 'Give it up guys, your time has passed -- just face it, it's never gonna happen for you" and the second half urging them on. When Lips' sister put up the money to help them do the album, I totally lost it. It moved me to many tears.
So glad Still Crazy is on the list. I love that movie. Bought it randomly for like 5 bucks at Wal Mart back in 2004. Loved it ever since
I´ve only seen Almost Famous from your list and yeah, i like it. I think i have to watch the other movies from your list.
Good video, thanks!
what about DMCs live action film? with cameo by Gene Simmons ? I thought for sure that would be on your list Glenn, I mean you play that riff almost every time you pick up a guitar.
Awesome list .. Bad News .. both are awesome "It says sausages up there" my fav quote. But please check out all the Comic Strip Presents shows. Old but funny as anything.
Hey Glenn!!! You heard of the rock n roll movie known as Suck? It’s a pretty cool film with great music and awesome cameos, namely iggy pop that I can recall right now.
Nice! I like watching SMG but I'm not trying to be a metal producer. This is the simple fun stuff I've been needing.
Great Video Glenn! Thank you so much!
My Fav Rock & Roll Movies:
1. Whiplash
2. Rock Star
3. School Of Rock
4. Rock Of Ages
5. The Dirt: Motley Crue
6. Bill & Tedd Excellent Adventure
7. Heavy Trip (Hevi Reissu, Finnish Metal Movie)
Great list! So many faves in there, a couple I didn't know about :)
Here are some of my faves you missed:
Suck - struggling band turned to vampires and then becomes successful. Incl. Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and more.
Josie and the Pussycats - struggling girl band - seems too cutesy, but it's a stunningly bitter satire, with hot girls, and great music.
Prey for Rock'n'Roll - struggling girl punk band ageing out, and then _real_ bad things happen. Gina Gershon, Lori Petty. Music dir. Stephen Trask (Hedwig)
Garage Days - struggling Australian band, does hallucinogens, finally gets a break. We never hear them until the end.
And where _is_ Hedwg?
Just watched The Commitments again last night, love that movie!
Glenn, good call on both The Commitments and Bad News. Incidentally, have you ever seen *Slade in Flame*? A real gritty rock film.
I remember when more bad news was first released, nearly pissed myself laughing, thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I hung out with the Commitments in New Jersey! (My dad was touring with them) A couple of the original guys from the movie were still there too. Awesome guys (and girls)
Yes! The commitments! One of my all time favorites.
This is a great compilation, and the only oversight for me is Blues Brothers. I'd put That Thing You Do higher (YMMV) but it must be said that there is a LOT of great music in that movie beside the core song. And for anyone who dives deep into the film, the break in Dance With Me Tonight (Tom Hanks' fist bump) is a great piece of editing (around 1:15 in the video clip).
The song from "That things you do" was written by Adam Schlesinger (from fountains of wayne)
Gotta add Metal Lords to the list. Just came out in April, kicks serious ass.
As somebody raised some time ago in the country behind iron curtain, all I can remember is, "Blues brothers" and "Wayne`s World".
Watch Hustle & Flow. Not our genre but a great movie about a bedroom recording. It actually has parts we all remember, blankets over windows, shitty mics, and plenty of arguments. But when you get excited, this movie brings you there. Remember? It's a hit! Holy fuck we have it excitement
Heavy Trip! Also a must see!
'Sing Street' is a phenomenal music film definitely one of my faves.
Yes - I really enjoyed this film and the music was very good.
I was at Castle Donington Monsters Of Rock when Bad News filmed the movie, Vim Fuego (Ade Edmondson) amp packed up so he smashed his guitar (Explorer Style) to keep the audience entertained hence thats why you only see it when they go on stage, they also announced a number called 3 minute ending where it was just that.
Have you also seen Deathgasm? It's pretty much Shaun of The Dead goes metal. Blood, guts and guitars...good stuff.
Still Crazy!!! I watched probably 70 times.... Best scene is when they played that gig and cranked it so loud!
My favorite Rock & Roll show is Californication! Good stuff Glenn!!
Hedwig and the angry inch you'll laugh your ball's off, kick ass tunes.
Did you put a bra in a dryer? Never put a bra in a dryer it warps! *makes drummer cry* haha
Hard Core Logo is another “fictional band reunites”-type story that’s done in a mockumentary style (though it veers wildly during an hallucinogenic trip in the desert).
Hugh Dillon (from Canadian rock band Headstones) plays the lead singer of the band and he’s simply great as an old punk who just can’t let go of the past.
The soundtrack is pretty great too.
Hey dude, super quick question. What's your view on the UA 'OX BOX'? I've been considering one for a while but the 4 digit price tag is a lotta beans haha, I don't know if you've had a chance to try one out, but, I thought I would ask. I'm trying to avoid the 'paid for' reviews ha!
The Rocker featured a kids band with Dwight from The Office trying to keep up and play drums on their breakout tour. Wasn’t a cinematic powerhouse or anything but it was good fun. The Boys And Girl from County Clair isn’t a rock movie, it’s about Celtic music but it’s got a lot of rock and roll situations and some really great Celtic tunes which can sometimes still be headbanged to.
Great to see Bad News are not forgotten
"the new guy". cameos from gene simmons (as a reverend of all things), henry rollins, jermaine dupree, vanilla ice, tommy lee...etc
