i'm an english as a second language teacher and had to study a LOT of language acquisition science in school, and this movie was SO CLOSE to actually talking about something real! fun fact, babies actually have a truly insane capability for language and actively lose that capability as they age. a newborn can distinguish between more sounds than any adult on the planet, but by around 11 months will lose that ability and stop making those distinctions (i.e. a baby whose family speaks arabic as a native language would stop being able to distinguish between "p" and "b"). there is so, SO much more to talk about when it comes to children and their innate language skills (shoutout to my guy noam chomsky father of modern linguistic theory) and yet this movie just made shit up!!

This hurt me so much, you can't "speak" cuneiform, it's the earliest form of writing and is essentially just complicated tally marks, you can't even really READ it, you're just like "oh these shapes mean there are 17 sheep in that flock" THAT'S the extent of what this system of writing can convey.

i watched this movie so many times as a child i have the entire thing completely memorized. fun fact, the song at the end (during the montage) is sung by the country singer randy travis who has a small role playing one of the guys controlling baby bunting from the control tower. also the triplets who played sly and whit are from my island (vancouver island) and they became pretty successful hockey players in their youth

Bunting is an old-fashioned way of clothing babies, and Baby Bunting is an old lullaby I used to play on a tape for my daughter. She’s now grown, and I’m so glad I never got this movie for her when she was little. I just couldn’t see myself sitting through it.
I noticed the cgi mouths for the babies taking when I was a kid too. In my kid brain, I figured the mouth movements were what we see and the movie translated the incoherent babbling that babies actually make into discernible dialogue. I still like this logic ☺️

That was a masterpiece.
The fantastic 70s/80s director Bob Clark (Black Christmas, Death Dream, Porky's, A Christmas Story - all fabulous films) was sadly reduced to making Baby Geniuses and Air Bud films late in his career, before dying in a car crash. He was a horror director early in his career - he invented the modern slasher two years before John Carpenter recycled many of his ides in Halloween - so he clearly had a warped sensibility.

I’m cryinggg, I did a deep dive on one of the actors and the “baby hands” are cuz the guy had dwarfism😭😭😭 same guy who played baby grinch in the live action movie
I remember watching that movie, there was some kids channel that played it all the time in the early 2000s. My mum walked in while it was on one day and was horrified by it, baby bunting was on the screen and mum didn't think it was actually a kids movie.

I was so terrified by this movie when I first saw it on TV in 2004. The talking babies, terrifying baby mascot robot and just the uncanny valley of how the babies appeared when moving around.... just so wrong for kids, all of it!
