    FYi, I just found out a few months ago that LockTite now sells ($5 +/-) a clear, silicon, caulk suitable/safe for aquariums, etc. It has a vinegar smell to it and will stick permanently to about anything and is watertight and super tough (superior to regular silicon). Bought some at Home Depot to repair a leak in my chest waders. If you do not have something else already on hand (i.e. silicon, gutter sealant, etc.), and plan to seal the whole failing part (as I did in the video) I would recommend this as the preferred sealant for use on this fix. You could use this for the entire job or use JB Weld to glue the part in place and then completely seal with Silicon.
    Also, a couple of you have asked about what I mean by "roughing up" broken parts before gluing then together. What I mean is simply using sand paper to lightly roughen up the surfaces of each part. This removes any dirt/contaminants and provides for more micro surfaces for the glue to stick too.
    Thanks for watching and for all the positive posts. I'm glad so many of you have fixed your carpet cleaners, saved some money, and didn't throw it out and by a new one. BTW, this probably should have been a 3-4 minute video, but it sounds like for most of you the 10 minutes was worth your time.

      I bought this unit 2 years ago. Decided to do spring cleaning. The water was draining onto the floor and I couldn't figure it out. I called Hoover to get a quote and was told Hoover does not make that part anymore. So I asked him for the part number. It's 440005353, Water Pump. I saw a gap on my WP and noticed 2 of the four screws were loose and the housing was pulling away from the body. Bought a brand new WP off of Amazon for $69 dollars. Got the Amazon Prime version and for the overnight shipping. I couldn't wait. Now if it leaks again I know to use sealant next time. I saw a tear down video on youtube by an authorized dealer where he said the water pump is known to be brittle and easily breaks. Go figure. So thanks for the tip.

    Thanks for posting this video! I called Hoover customer service and they were no help other than offering a 15 % discount for me to purchase another carper cleaner from them! Checked my carpet cleaner after reviewing your video and low and behold the plastic piece you identified in the video was cracked. Now just waiting for my sealant to cure/dry so I can put back together and test for leaks.

  • @jeffwoodward3955
    @jeffwoodward3955 Před 4 lety +8

    This was totally helpful. Thanks Shane! A couple of additional notes: I used a 1" putty knife to run along the front of the cover after taking out the screws in order to release it a little easier. I used a popsicle stick to apply the epoxy around the outside of the piece, which provided a solid seal with a rounded edge. As you suggested, a flat toothpick was essential to get the hard-to-reach spots. I don't have a magnetic screwdriver, so when re-installing the screw that holds the tab in place, I used some DAP Bluestick Adhesive Putty on the screw head so it would stay on the screwdriver until I could get it in place. My last thought is that I think our problem happened when I stored the carpet cleaner in our (Vermont) barn last winter and the water in the piece froze and expanded. I'll be storing it in the house this winter! Thanks again for this great fix!!

    • @doyourthingcowboy
      @doyourthingcowboy  Před 4 lety +2

      Good tips and yeah, the water in yours may have frozen (maybe). Though this part has failed on machines people have had only had a few months (like mine). The plastic on this part is super hard and brittle as you saw. BTW, haven't watch this video in a while ... sorry, but it could have be a lot shorter and to more ot the point. Take care

The leak was so bad the last time that I used it to shampoo dining room chairs. I ran out of water quickly, then saw the huge puddle all over my dining room floor (wood)! Incredible! Exact problem and a great fix. Saved me from having to buy and wait for the water pump part. Was the first time I used JB Weld. Worked like a charm. Reach behind your left shoulder and pat yourself on the back because I can't do it!!!!!

    • @doyourthingcowboy
      @doyourthingcowboy  Před 6 lety

      Thanks Joe ... very kind of you! Yeah JB weld is the "cat's meow" and way better than typical epoxies (incredibly strong and bonds don't seem to degrade over time that I can tell. I have fixed everything you can image with it ... including leaks / other things on auto motors. If you did not know, JB Weld comes in a Kwik setup variety the will not run after 5 mins. ... so great on vertical items. The regular JB Weld is stronger but will run if you don't just mix it up and then wait about 30 minutes before applying it ... so great for horizontal surfaces. It works great on all metals, hard plastics, masonry, wood... just make surfaces are roughened and cleaned (rubbing alcohol, etc.). I fixed a very small part on my wife's FitBit watch a month ago with a pin head amount. Used fine sandpaper on slender edges and "welded" it. She is thrilled after first saying "no way" is that going to hold... ha!

    Thank you.. After 1.5 years I faced the same issue, clearly the PVC and part faces fatigue due to it poor quality of material..
    - 2 screw holds were broken and pvc plate started to develop fatigue cracks.
    - Used super glue to keep plastic screw holds back together as closely as possible and extensively used JB water weld silicon paste to keep it from leaking and breaking further..
    Leak has stopped its back all thanks to this video , $7 fix works well. Thanks again..

    Just wanted to stop by and thank Shane (Do your thing!) for this excellent post, including his observations on how to repair the failed turbine pump assembly on the Power Scrub 50
    We've had this unit for 2 or 3 years and have used it only 2 or 3 times (we don't clean our carpet until it really needs it !). I've very disappointed that such a critical part failed in such a short time -- it otherwise works very well.
    A couple points I noticed. First, the tab that holds the assembly down broke off on mine as I was pulling it out. I was being very careful and applied very little pressure. The plastic is very brittle. I glued the tab back on with marine grade epoxy. It seems sturdy enough.
    I used JB Weld and the LocTite silicone for the main repair. I used a pair of small c-clamps to hold the two pieces tightly together as the JB Weld cured overnight. I tested for leaks and it seems to be working fine. We'll see how long it lasts.
    Unbelievably, to me, Hoover continues to sell this unit, but they have discontinued the turbine pump assembly, so if you buy one and it fails -- which seems very likely -- you'll have to fix it yourself.
    Thanks again, Shane!

    • @doyourthingcowboy
      @doyourthingcowboy  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Ed, Yeah it's unfortunate that Hoover doesn't make this failing part (turbine pump assembly) much more robust as otherwise this is an excellent carpet cleaner. Hoover has to be aware of this ... I just don't get it. FYi, my Power Scrub 50 is still working fine with no leaks so you should be in good for future use. You mention they are no longer making and/or offering this part. What a shame. Hoover should offer a free repair (with a redesigned part) to all registered owners. Take care, Shayne

      Shane - you were smart to fix the cracked/broken screw holes with superglue in the ABS plastic part. Superglue will very effectively weld ABS pieces and so long as you didn't over-tighten you should be okay. I made a comment denoting the problem with JB-Weld Original. The two pieces he's gluing together are ABS and PP-G30 (polypropylene) and JB-Weld is not effective adhering to PP.

    Exactly what my issue was. Thank you for your video. What I don't get is why are there so many of us having the same issue? Shame on Hoover for making something cheaply and everybody is having same issue. I hadn't even used mine but maybe two times and it's sat for a few years because I don't have carpet but now that I want to do some of my area rugs it's been leaking. I tried to do the carpet runners on my steps and that's when it began leaking. I thought it had something to do with that attachment so I put it away, and now a year later I'm try to do a small rug and it was leaking again. Found your video and now I'm going to use Krazy glue and some silicone around it. I'm going to get in touch with Hoover and tell them about their issue. I probably will never buy another Hoover.
    Update: Tried the next day but this didn't fix the problem.

One guy posted a while back that he found one of these machines in the trash area at his apartment complex. He tried it, it leaked, he found this video, and now has a free (perfectly good) carpet shampooer!

    Having pets, over the years I've gone through a number of these machines. For a while I just tossed out the old one but now I see that Hoover calls this a 'professional' machine and it costs a lot more. So I've been saving them as they have problems and have spares for parts.

    Same problem, 2 screw posts broken, followed your instructions and JB Welded the posts, and used white silicone to seal everything up.
    It's clamped and I'm going to leave it sit for 24 hours to be sure. Thank you for this post. Like everyone keeps saying, i can't believe that Hoover hasn't addressed this issue.
    Do they want to lose all their carpet cleaning business to Bissell?
    Addendum: Next day-(today.) While wrestling the unit back into place after reattaching the larger hose, the smaller hose broke off, leaving the protruding plastic tube end inside the small hose.
    Cheap plastic. Going to try and insert a short (1"), piece of brass tubing inside of the hose and JB Welding the whole thing back in place.

    • @RMCPL
      @RMCPL Před 3 lety

      Well the tube insert idea worked well, but the entire unit started leaking from around the seams on the larger body. Sealed that up with JB Weld and waited another few days for that to cure. Squirted some red food dye into the larger hose nipple to check for leaks. No leaks! Put it all back together, put the water tank on, and let it sit for a while.
      Leaked like a sieve. Water everywhere. Don't understand it. Going to check that diaphragm that works with the trigger release tomorrow and see if there might be problem there.

    This was almost exactly the problem with mine. Fortunately I had an old machine with other problems but it hadn't been a leaker... so I just swapped that part from one to the other and now it's good.

    Hey I just wanna say thanks I can’t believe how hard it was to find this video in the short window of time I had before throwing this thing in one direction or another as clearly it’s a pretty common problem. I was going to go after that first part that just gives it air as well but I’m glad I saw this first So I can skip that detour without possibly breaking something else while There lol. I should probably mention I haven’t finished mine yet but I’m pretty confident you’ve got the answer I was looking for so thanks in advance and wish me luck👍

      Hey Jonny, Yes Glad you found my video and appreciate your thank you! Let me know how you make out. You'll be fine ... just make sure to use sandpaper to roughen the plastic (then rinse and dry to get the dust off) all the way around before applying a good silicon sealant. Subscribe if you feel so inclined ... take care.

      @@jamesikwon sorry it has been a while since I repaired the seal and I do not have the power scrub anymore, however I looked online (hoover website) and found the part. It has a listing for each part with pictures on the web site and then did a search for the part. Hope that helps. The repair video also mentions the part I think. It was not available at Hoover but at another website

    FYi, I sent this message to Joe Furr, but thought you all might benefit and save some some cash with JB Weld:
She is thrilled after first saying "no way" is that going to hold... ha!

Prior to finding your video I had replaced the seal at the bottom of the water and solution tank. However after both of these repairs mine is still pouring water out the bottom. Does anybody have any other suggestions for me to figure out where it's leaking from?

  • @billrankin5899
    @billrankin5899 Před rokem

    Can't thank you enough! Exactly the same problem on my machine. What really irks me is how unbelievably cheap and flimsy these parts are - thin, brittle plastic just waiting to fail. That's what we get for losing control and losing pride in manufacturing. Cheap Asian goods flood our markets, kill our jobs, and we get sold junk. You just have to adapt and become a Mr. Fixit with the help of good YT videos like this one.

      Agreed and unreal. When I first called Hoover for advice on this situation they wanted close to $90 just to take a look at my Spin Scrub 50. • @doyourthingcowboy
      @doyourthingcowboy  Před 2 lety

      Hi Alyssa, I used the original JB Weld to glue the broken screw posts back on. See: www.homedepot.com/p/J-B-Weld-Two-1-oz-Twin-Tube-Cold-Weld-8265-s/100189012 . May a friend of neighbor has some you can borrow. I then used light sand paper to roughen up the surfaces (under where you now see the black silicon in the video) and rinsed the dust off/dried. This allows for way better adherence. I would use Locktite's clear silicon (it's aquarium grade and at Home Depot right by the Paint desk) to cover the entire area where the two parts of pump screw together. It doesn't need to be pretty ... just work it in a bit with a toothpick or similar... especially on the one side where all the nooks and crannies are. This should get you back in business ... let me know if I can assist further!

  • @hkjrnc
    @hkjrnc Před 4 lety

    I used Gorilla super glue to cement the broken mounts then used silicon on the gasket. I let it set overnight before reassembling it. What's that part on the floor after you put it back together? Did you forget to put back the part that you originally suspected was the problem?

    The black part that connects to the main lower assembly (it has a hose to the part you fixed, and it's the same part that has the screen filter)... if that piece is crumbling and cracked, am I out of luck or will I be able to save it by covering it in silicon?
