A common problem with the Hoover Max Extract series is the water/detergent tank valve leaks. Here is a cheap and easy fix that only takes a couple dollars and a few seconds to complete.
No freaking way, I was about to buy the rubber stuff but I choose to start searching for the problem and I came across this video, I'll get the stuff soon, I'll post again after is fix.
OMG. Thank you so much for this video! We've had our shampooer maybe all of a year, and it's DUMPING water. Also, thank you for being direct and to the point!
THANK YOU! It leaked pretty much from the first time I used it, which meant it usually took me two years between cleanings as it was such a pain. I did the worst of the living room today and the leak was intolerable although I put a cork in the small square hole at the back that was letting let it run out like a faucet. I have many washers around and will test them out so I can do a bit of cleaning hopefully minimum once a week for a month or two in this big house. However, the water/solution tank also leak from sink to machine. It seems to be at the seals internally of the water/wash dial.
BIG THANKS BeerDaddy! You've saved me. Selling house and mine started leaking and did not have time to get new cleaner and I wasn't going to clean the carpet because of it. But now using your awesome fix the new homer will appreciate the clean carpet. Thank You!
Thank you SO MUCH for this simple and effective fix to an annoying problem! Worked perfectly for us--we used a bag of standard washers, purchased for $1.00; the problem is fixed and we have a bunch more washers for our hoses!
thank you so much, for whoever might need this, I have hoover extract 77, and 2 faucet aerator kits will be needed to completely seal it! because the 2 gaskets in 1 kit are not identical and 1 gasket is not thick enough for 1 hose(so I actually went to home depot twice to get 1 more kit😐) but they work! and both 1.2gpm or 1.5gpm kits will work because the gaskets inside are actually the same size🙂
Great video, great fix. Your recommendation worked on my Hoover Max Extract 77. Its tank has 2 similarly designed valves, so you can imaging leaking. Your before/after clips are not an exaggeration. Thanks for taking the time to make this short, to-the-point informational post. The levity made it more enjoyable, as well. You may have saved the 77's life.
My pleasure, BeerDaddy! I posted this link to another Hoover fix-it video.None of their tips addressed the leaks like yours. I hope others find this as helpful as I did. This gets marked: "solved"
mary jo kvern I was looking through pictures of the 77 and it looks like they have the same tank valve. If you take your water tank off and the bottom valve looks like the one here in the video it should be the same fix.
Yes, Mary Jo. As I stated above, the valves on my 77 looked very similar to the 60, except the Model 77 has 2: one each for the water and soap reservoirs. I found a Peerless plumbing repair kit (PRL067X) at a grocery store with many assorted washers for less than $3. I'm sure there are many similar kits that will have suitable washers. I hope like BeerDaddy & me, you'll soon be enjoying dry carpets.
That is exactly what my Hoover Spin Scrub 50 is doing, It's been driving me bonkers and I figured out it was the rubber seal that you pointed out. I will get the washer and try that, thanks so much for the video, saved me money and frustration! You rock!
What a racket by Hoover. You also can't get a replacement rubber gasket for the bottom tank. Unfortunately no one else makes a similar machine The Rug Doctor machine totally sucks. Still an asshole move by Hoover not to have these parts available. I am getting the aerator kit now. THANKS!
Use dielectric silicone based grease, works better with water, also if the tank leaks remove the eclip and pull out the plunger, grease the orings and plunger and re-install.
I had two leaking problems with mine . The same one you talked about and one that came out through the wash/rinse shaft that enters the cannister. If you look through the plastic container you will see there are two o rings on a gray shaft. I am assuming that the o rings are no good so i will attempt to change them. The way to get the shaft out is simple. Remove the circlip that holds the spring in place. Once you do that you can pull out the entire shaft by pulling on the knob. It will pop out. Imagine, the people at Hoover refused to give me directions to do this because they want to avoid liability so I told them where they can put their liability. What a bunch of no goods. I would not buy another Hoover product and wish no one will. Hopefully now that you have solved the first leak with a washer I can solve the other one with new Orings. Thanks
Actually, after looking closer, your "solution" is actually covering up the real problem. The rubber plunger on top of valve (inside tank) is not sealing. You are merely filling up the cavity to where back pressure stops flow. The valve should never pass water until plunger is pressed. I merely took a small instrument that allowed me to twist valve stem, and, with a little water in tank, carefully cleaned whatever debris had accumulated on top rubber seal by slowly twisting to hopefully remove said debris. I don't want to risk removing valve for a thorough cleaning (which is all it really needs). I doubt if your leaked from the beginning and yet the surface imperfections were there the whole time.
W Tski thanks for the comment. This unit leaked from the very beginning as did many others I have talked to. The valve still operates with the washer and has for years now.
I get water leaking out the bottom of mine. Spinscrub 50. Hoses aren't leaking. Like under the motor between it and the lower base I have water in the base setting. You know how the 1leg of the dirty water tank sets into the hole, well down in there the base has bunch water setting. Soon as you turn vaccum on , the motor fan blows the water out the bottom.
We have the MaxExtract 77 (two valves), and like the others with the same unit we tried two gaskets (same size, squared off and flat - not rounded o rings) but it still leaked at about the same rate as before. We purchased the unit in 2017, use it at least once a year, and this was the first time (2023) it leaked - yes, just like a new puppy who has not been housebroken. Any other suggestions?
Hello! I am happy to try this but it seems that my Hoover is leaking from the spring/valve stem like Denise Danish may be referencing. From your knowledge, is this something that can be fixed? I have been investigating the tank and am trying to figure out how to take it apart to fix. It seems as thought the o-rings up inside have dried out and are not doing their job of sealing the detergent/water tanks anymore. Thank you!
Cara Smith Sorry to hear it’s the valve, I have not replaced one (yet) so don’t have any insight. Unfortunately it seems these machines are considered disposable by their manufacturers 🙁
I have a Hoover elite scrubber. The problem I see in mine is that after I put the machine away with empty upper tank minus whats left of the cleaner in the resevior. It leaks the shampoo through the brushes. Would your fix on the upper tank take care of this? Hoses are good.
I was so excited to see such a simple fix for the EXACT problem I've been having. But it did not work at all. Zero difference. The water literally pours out. Given the other great comments regarding success I'm frustrated and puzzled. If I am unable to find a cure I might as well throw the machine in the garbage. What say you? Any other thoughts?
Hey BD, thanks for responding. After playing with it some more I find that using the washer actually makes the problem worse, to the point that it appeared that the water was continually draining from the tank. I tried using two washers only to make it even worse. I don't recall the machine having this problem when I first got it and I have put it to repeated daily use (thanks to my incontinent dog) for quite a while. Since I don't see any imperfections in the rubber grommet but perhaps it is simply worn out or stretched. I will let you know.
Sorry for the late reply, I am sure you have fixed by now but to answer: whatever size that will fit snuggly. The sink aerator kits are universal but an O-Ring kit will have one to fit as well
No freaking way, I was about to buy the rubber stuff but I choose to start searching for the problem and I came across this video, I'll get the stuff soon, I'll post again after is fix.
That was what my problem was. Had Harbor Freight’s o-ring kit and had one to fit snug. Thanks for posting this!!!!!!
OMG. Thank you so much for this video! We've had our shampooer maybe all of a year, and it's DUMPING water. Also, thank you for being direct and to the point!
This was a great help, stopped the leak. thank goodness for ppl like you.
6 years later, still relevant 👌🏾

Thank you for this, I'm going to try it, our hoover leaks like heck, makes more of a mess than the one I'm trying to clean.
Thank you SO MUCH for this simple and effective fix to an annoying problem! Worked perfectly for us--we used a bag of standard washers, purchased for $1.00; the problem is fixed and we have a bunch more washers for our hoses!
I have a different model, so i used an "o" ring that fit. Stopped the leaking, thank you so much for sharing.

Dave E thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. You made my evening!

Does this solution also apply to the model 77 machine?

I wish you had a video of where and how to find the clip!! Agreed, no more Hoovers, of any kind!
Thanks for the info you saved me a lot of money and time.
I just used my cleaner the first time today it leaked just like you said,Thanks you the idea I'm going to get that tomorrow.
This worked perfectly! No more leaking! Thank you!!!
My leak has stop by watching your sight thank you Sir!! Bottom leak fix I side fyi

Thanks much, had this problem since day one!
Great quick fix. Thank you
Work for me, i fix it, thank you for your help.
my problem is the spring that changes the rince wash is leaking

Trying it now! Thank you!
You just saved me $75
Edit: it didnt end up working. I gave my carpet cleaner away to a fellow med-student and bought a new one 😕
Saved my dayyyy. Bless you sir
You are the best!

I have the same vacuum and mine leaks from a small square hole 1/2 way up the back of the cleaner when you angle it back ? Any thoughts please?
Thank you 😊
so awesome thank you!!!!!
Wow it worked. That's Great!
What size aerator kit would it use?
Thank you for sharing!

william hough sorry to hear that it did not work 🙁. If it is still not sealing I wonder if maybe the rubber grommet is creased or cracked?

Spot on!
thanks it worked
I love you
Will this work for the Hoover smartwash solution tank leak?
Hi Pat, I’m not sure. Does it have the same valve?
Thanks
Awesome!! Ty!!!!
Sleeping elves must have designed it. I can’t believe they didn’t fix this design flaw.
OutFuckinStanding!
hey dad its me leila-
Hi Leila, I am CZcams Famous now. Time to find a better family......
