- Huge thanks to @N64thStreet for the gameplay footage for this review.
Mega Man 64, also known as Mega Man Legends, is a game released for the Nintendo 64 by Capcom. It was released in Japan in 2000 and North America the following year in 2001. It is the first Mega Man Legends game in the series. - Hry
Whoa, GP64 is back!! Glad to see you
good to see you SNES and hopefully you're still drunk!
we got SNES Drunk & N64 Glenn, where's GameCube Sarah ??
... And Captain Nintendo Dude!...
... I'll see myself out =-P
Damnit I love both your guys’ content.
Please keep finding ways to create content Forever, guys! Lol
This game story was ahead of its time with flooded earth and searching for energy. They forgot to put the villains as the biggest “philanthropists” and the part where you ruin your life because a hoax
Haha very true!
You forgot to mention the best thing about the N64 port, and that's if you play on the easy setting you start off with all the items unlocked. This allows you to use the jet skates from the beginning of the game, a very welcome change.
Great point!
wait im lost i dont remeber startin out with all items did i miss something is there a diff port ????
@@shinosmodspot4267 the only other port that i know of is the Playstation port.
@@karinka123 right and i dont remeber startin with all stuff ever i beat both versions and number 2 on ps1
@@shinosmodspot4267 I think you had to beat hard mode to get easy mode on the PSX. MML 1 and 2 both have an easy mode.
When I was a kid I only knew this game on the N64 and the story and gameplay were amazing, for a kid back then we cared about having fun... not checking if it goes at 60 fps or if the shader implemented is the best... so I can say they did their main job to entertain a young audience, maybe for them it was a matter of money, but for me it allowed me to enjoy hours of fun. Getting the skates was the best part.
That’s a good point and as a teenager at the time I was perhaps hoping did more than inafune was delivering in terms of something more suited to older gamers (for the time) and not a general population style release
I've always felt that if you wanted to play a Nintendo 64 game that has the feel of what a 3D Mega Man game could be, Jet Force Gemini is a great example. It has great run and gun game play, you power up your armor and weapons as you progress, and you even play as a robot dog which could have worked as segments featuring Rush in a Mega Man game. So I'd say squint your eyes while playing Jet Force Gemini and pretend the characters are Mega Man. That's pretty much how I would have done it.
Boom that’s a great example!
Very accurate assessment
I say JFG is more like Metroid than MM
I discovered this channel during your hiatus and it was a bummer thinking you had hung up your gloves so it’s just fantastic seeing uploads again!! Thanks for the great content!
Haha thanks! Glad I could keep you entertained then and now?
Wow, it’s been a while since a regular review. Happy to see new content from you.
About 29 more to go!!!
Your videos are an asset to this website! Seriously awesome everytime!(: Another informative and well put together video!(:
Thanks Sydney it’s nice to hear that people enjoy what I do, that’s why I do it
I loved this game. I had no knowledge of this game being on playstation at the time, i was just happy to see a 3d megaman. Also the openess of the world was pretty impressive for my child mind
Mega Man Legends is my favorite Mega Man game of all time. I really love how the plot is simple and yet really good once the details are revealed. And also I think its lenght is well enough: not too long it gets boring and not too short. I just wished it had more open scenarios.
Thank you for doing this vid in 4:3. I think it's the way to go moving forward unless the game supports native 16:9 (e.g., Goldeneye). Cheers.
Thanks goes to @n64thstreet 🙏🏼
Glenn! Discovering your videos during the COVID pandemic made for such a soothing, educational, and insightful look at the quality, design. and history of all these N64 games. I'm so glad you're back uploading new videos. All the best to you and yours!
@RockManLP_Reviews ?
Thanks David I appreciate that even during my hiatus I was helping people chill 😃
I echo these comments. Thank you for making high quality vids.
I had no idea this game even existed on the N64. You continue to surprise me with each and every video. Let the summer of Glenn continue...
I hope it does too
I missed these videos so much. It’s great that you’ve returned
Thanks mullet man
I rented this when it first came out and it was decent but nothing to write home about i wish capcom put as much effort into Megaman 64 like they did with resident evil 2 which also was a playstation port.
Oh man that would have been amazing right, or just given us more capcom n64 games
Glad you're back Glenn with the N64 content.
Thanks for tuning in 👍
Glad to see you back, Glenn. Your channel has been a great help during my pandemic N64 shopping spree. Stay safe!
Watch that cash yo!
@@n64glennplant the nostalgia’s worth every penny!
I love that I have been coming back to your channel for years and years and the content is so refreshing to hear. Even though I've heard so many of your reviews two or three times, I can't help putting them on in the background while I'm doing something. I never get tired of them. The saddest part is that there are only so many 64 games to review and you have already covered so many.
Simply put, I love your content. I hope that at some point you go back on some games you have already covered and do a retrospective on games that mean a lot to you. I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys storytime from you. I would also love to see more episodes of Japanese eye. I realized today that a good chunk of my 64 import collection is a result of your videos.. As always though, 10/10 review. Keep it up!
There’s a few games I did in the early years that i want to do again with a better quality etc so you never know!
Glade your back your n64 videos are amazing and highly detailed. Great work!
Thank you Adam that’s much appreciated
Glad to see you're doing reviews once again. Welcome back, man!
Thanks jiggy!
Was playing the PS Version recently. Then I tried the N64 version for a bit and the anti-aliasing makes things look blurrier. Framerate drops and slowdown also occur.
It doesn’t seem like they put too much effort into this version.
Shame since its actually a pretty decent game.
Yeah that’s why I’d recommend ps1 for this game
Glad to see a new video from you! I recently purchased this game because I remember enjoying it years ago.
Nostalgia is a great thing isn’t it
Glad to see you reviewing again, bro. Love your content. Really good stuff.
Thanks fella I appreciate that
Just found your channel a few days ago, I love your content!
Thanks Ethan there’s certainly a lot for you to watch!
He's back for reviews let's go!
More to come 🤞
Love all your stories of rumors & buzz at the time games came out, I remember saving allowances and picking out games with my brother, but I was either too young or didn't know enough other people with N64s to get all those fun experiences. Always love to hear you talk about it!
I could go on forever 🥰
I have missed your videos so much. They are so well done. Takes me back to another happy time in my life. Probably my most happiest. Especially 007 Goldeneye.
That’s why I do it my friend!
Ah, it's been to long, great to see your reviews once again. I love how much detail and history you put into each video. Can't wait to see you review the rest of the N64 library!
About 29 to go now
@@n64glennplant Exciting! Hard to believe you've made your way through so many games
@@Chiller31916 I thank my super Aspergers 😂
Nice to see yu are still doing n64 reviws!
Thanks buddy about 29 to go
I am so happy that you are back. I love your videos and it really helps me through my day.
Thank you boshaft, stay strong brother ✌️
YAY! Good to see you back dude!
Thanks stadium!
Despite the flaws I still love this game. It was the closest I could get to playing both Megaman Legends games since I didnt have a PS1 (or any of the PS systems).
That’s a great point a so often forget most aren’t lucky enough to own both consoles
So happy you're making videos again.
On a bit of a roll at the minute!
Legends is my favorite Megaman anything. But I've never played the 64 port. Seems the PS1 is the way to go.
Yeah legends 2 was great too. I also loved the misadventures of tron bonne
@@bigkmoviesandgames oh yes indeed. love the whole series. the world and characters are top notch.
@@melon3109 agreed. It's one of the few series that I get really drawn into because of how interesting and unique the world is. I wish they didn't cancel legends 3.
Legends is my favorite as well
Purists and loyalists don't like Megaman's anime style when Megaman has always been an anime character!!!!
I wasn't really aware of gaming websites or magazines back in the N64 days, just saw a megaman game for the n64 in a store one day and bought it. I really enjoyed it and I've enjoyed the other Legends games as well.
One of the only channels where I've watched every single video. 💯🎮
Thanks James I really appreciate that support
So stoked to see another review! Your content is incredible. I noticed that you don’t have Aidyn Chronicles reviewed on your channel at the moment. Could that be next?
Probably at some point this year but not sure when
Reviews are back❤️
Yeah mixing it up a bit
Another outstanding video Glenn, very informative and thorough. I didn't even know there was a Mega Man game on the N64...the more you know!
Learn something new every day hey!
My favorite channel on CZcams !
Thanks, there’s some great channels
Nice, I thought you had already reviewed every N64 game. Glad to see a new review from you. I alway's enjoy your N64 reviews. Best on CZcams IMO.
About 29 to go and a couple I’d also like to redo from the early days
2021 & I am going back collecting N64 games I missed out originally. Your reviews help me weed out the shovel wear & discover some hidden gems.
You didn't see many games with this visual style on n64
That’s true, most were Japanese
So good to see a new video Glenn😃
Thanks farmer
While you're playing Legends, don't forget to check out the Misadventures of Tron Bonne, the spin-off where you play as the pirate family instead, in a sort of weird child-friendly GTA-style adventure.
Good shout I see a few recommendations for that
Great video! I'm waiting for Legends 3!
Or the lost 3ds cancelled one
Glenn is back!!!
Back again, Glenn is back, tell a friend
This game blew my mind as a kid!! I always wished they would bring back this series.
Speaking on what capcom was doing for the 64 in general, There actually was a street fighter EX port that was being developed, but cancelled.
Yup there were loads of titles announced but not even images shared to the press by capcom. Maybe one day we will get a lack of some of them
Tfw no Street fighter 64 😭
The amount of months magazines were mentioning that with nothing to ever show
It was way ahead of its time, its sad that they never continued doing this branch, i wish i had the game again so i could play it over and over again like i used to
I have a pretty vast n64 collection but this one has always evaded me! I only got to rent it as a kid from blockbuster a few times.
I enjoyed the art style mostly being a fan of the pokemon anime.
That’s an interesting view, I wonder who else had that same opinion
I have fond memories with Megaman 64 and this game was a blessing since it was the only game I could play when my N64 controller's joysticks were broken (Mario Parties, Tennis and Super Smash has that effect some times)
This was my first Megaman game and it got me got me into the series (eventhough I've seen the old anime/cartoon before as a kid, I didn't care all that much) also Megaman Legends 2 was the only game from the Playstation system I wanted to play.
Haha that’s a great point!!!!
I loved the Mega Man Legends games and every few years I go back and complete 1, 2 and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.
Will forever be sad that it never got a conclusion with Legends 3.
A few people have recommended tron bonne so maybe I’ll have to check that one out
@@n64glennplant Its on the PS3 store if you have a hard time finding a physical copy like I did.
As I've stated in another video of yours, this game is one of my absolute favorites on the console. Nowadays, if I play it, I don't play the n64 version, because Legends is superior in almost every way, But not having access to a PS1 growing up, this is the way I experienced this game. I think the story is great, and It's an overall fun game. The thing I like the most is the exploration of this game, and that by the end of the game, every ruin on the island is essentially connected in some fashion. It heavily pushed you to want to explore so you can make new weapons, get better buster parts, and so on. I personally think this one is better than Legends 2 when it comes to exploration. Legends 2 has some good quality of life updates, but it takes a huge step back in the whole "digging" part of the game. It went from "let's explore everything" to sprawling dungeons as the main event, and some tiny little side-ruins to explore, that you can't even explore without passing license exams which is annoying to say the least.
Welcome back glenn
Thanks Matt!
Glad to have you back!
Thanks Adrian! 5 videos in the past 5 weeks is getting me back into the swing!
Another great video Glenn. Just a slight correction as Mega Man Legends on PS1 wasn't negatively received as, for the most part, it received good reviews. What baffled the hell out of me with the N64 port was why Capcom decided to bring it to the system 2 1/2 years after the PS1 version. You'd figure by that time they would have ported Mega Man Legends 2 since that was the latest game in the series to have been released as it came out only a few months before the N64 port of Legends 1. Or hell even an N64 port of Misadventures Of Tron Bonne would have made more sense.
That’s a very valid point you know, baffling indeed!
Imagine if they changed the Layouts of some areas, soundtrack, and just changed up the Islands ecstatic design to make it a bit creepy to add to the fog.
That would have been 🔥 🤩
Glad to see you back
ah yeah on the road again to review them all i see!
Keep rolling rolling rolling 🏍
Hello from your biggest fan 😁 nice to see another original review 👍
Thanks franz - always appreciate your support
Thanks for the review, I like the art style
Back at it again with another banger!
💥 🔥
The N64 was very lucky to get this game, even the mighty Wii U never seen a proper new Mega Man game of its own for the console. NES had Mega Man 1-6, SNES had Mega Man 7 and the X series, N64 had Mega Man 64, GameCube had Command Mission, Network Transmission and a bunch of collection, Wii had Mega Man 9 & 10 and VC games, and Switch had Mega Man 11 plus a bunch of collections, Wii U got nothing unless you use backwards compatibility.
You know voan that’s a damn good point!
I was completely satisfied with this on N64. I picked up the digital PSOne Classics versions of Legends 2 and Tronne Bonne on the PS3 to round out the collection since they haven't been very affordable in quite a long time.
That’s interesting to know as I don’t really follow ps1 prices
Really interesting review. This was one of my favorite titles as a kid. I was so unaware of the PS1 ecosystem that I didn't know the 64 version was a port. Really enjoyed this game as a kid. Maybe I should try the PS version sometime...
Woah He is Back! :)
5 vids in 5 weeks confirmed that 😄
The characters from the Legends series are classic. Personally I like these better than the side scrollers.
6:38 on the PS1 this game looks ahead of it's time on the N64 however things are blurry
Yeah
This game was the reason why there was no Metroid game made for the N64. If a Mega Man game like this wasn't well receive in 3D for the system, a game like Metroid probably won't either. Nintendo was thinking of making a 3rd person Metroid game for the N64 at the time but seen this and just dropped the idea altogether. In fact Metroid Prime for the GameCube was going to be a third person shooter too before Miyamoto came along and prefer the 1st person perspective instead.
For your next few reviews, I would like to see you review Mystical Adventure Starring Goemon (surprised you only reviewed the sequel and not the first one and then the sequel), Paper Mario 64, Castlevania 1, Castlevania 2 (there is names for them but I do not remember what they are but they are on the N64 they're just called Castlevania 1 and 2), and Duck Dodgers Starring Daffy Duck please.
I borrowed Mega Man Legends for the PS1 when it first came out. At the time I loved it from start to finish as a kid.
Yeah for that time I bet it held up a lot better
I had no clue that this game was basically a port of Mega Man Legends.
I was always intrigued by, and wanting to play both of those games, so now I know I only need to play one haha.
And even playing one will be a tough decision 😂
I played this on PlayStation but I absolutely LOVED the Mega Man Legends Series! Wish these would come back!
Lets goo. New review!
Yeah majora!
I always loved MegaMan Legends/64, and I also thought it looked great. Sure, the models are simplistic, but it has this blend of say, Virtua Fighter's simple flat polygons and some very early anime-style cel-shading that gives it a timeless look, and even in context of games like Resident Evil or Hybrid Heaven, I thought it art design stood out.
Really wish we'd get another MegaMan Legends, but Capcom infamously cancelled Inafune's planned 3DS sequel.
Yeah it seems a few people were looking forward to that in the comments section here
You da man! Love the new content Glenn!
Thanks Joe 🤞
For the fact that it had such wonky controls, MegaMan 64/Legends was really well done in the end. Decent amount of challenge, and a lot more content than the average Mega Man game, plus it's charming as all hell. The best bit in my opinion is that the town takes donations after your big battle inside of it with the pirates to rebuild all the buildings destroyed in the battle, and you can pay them off for all the damage and destruction you caused, and as you pay the fund off, it actually does rebuild the buildings. That's a neat level of detail most games won't go into.
Yeaaaaaa I was waiting for this thanks N64 Jesus 🤠
The lord be with you ✌️
I beat this game twice. Loved this game. Even bought Tron Bonne and MML2 on PlayStation. All fantastic games.
Bought and played through the N64 version earlier this year; have to say, I think it holds up quite well and I hope to see a piquing of more people's interest in the series when Capcom (fingers crossed) releases a Mega Man Legends Legacy Collection.
Yeah I imagine there will be a pump in the cost of the game also for those wanting to pick up the cart
Looks a lot like misadventures of Tron Bonne, which was fantastic
Yup that’s the spin off
I gave the PS1 version a go borrowing from a friend about 10 years ago. It wasn't as bad I'd have thought but still not great. I can't imagine the N64 version is much different outside of sound quality and fog.
Pretty much spot on there pal
Good to see you back Glenn! You mentioned you had 29 more to go. Any plans for future videos after that?
Yeah I have a list as long as my arm for videos
@@n64glennplant awesome! Looking forward to watching them!
Wasn't your channel's logo a trade marked magazine logo? I'm from Mexico and there was this oversized magazine in the late 90s called simply N64 with those huge color dots. I don't remember it being translated or something. I was just wondering if it is related in any way or just a random coincidence
N64 magazine ✌️
I was sure you'd like this game! Your review surprised me. I haven't played it yet but it's in my collection and I will play it later this year.
It’s okay, not the best but had its moments
@@n64glennplant Ok I played it. I didn't like it. My cart is already on eBay 😐

Graphics impressed me back in the day. For the N64 they're still pretty good. Never played the game though.
Keep up the good work bro
Thanks sandonte
You compared this story to water world but when you were describing the world and story and only small islands left I immediately thought of legend of Zelda Wind Waker on the gamecube.
Mega Man Legends on PS1 is my favorite Mega Man game. The N64 version is okay.
Great video! Fun background information and review.
Thanks aaron 😎

A new glenn plant video, woohoo! Watching a day late on my birthday, super appreciate all the effort you put in to entertain us fans. Bravo
Happy birthday tampoline ! 🎂
A classic
Worth checking out for sure
I remember I used to own this version of the game back when it first released (the English release of it was actually 5 days after 9th birthday), and I played it a lot back in the day.
I think I might have gotten it around the time I got Paper Mario since I got that on release day and I know I played both games around the same time so I have a lot of nostalgia for both.
Anyways, the issue of Nintendo Power from February 2001 (the one that had Paper Mario featured on the cover, issue 141 last I checked) had a walkthrough for half of Paper Mario and then a somewhat brief walkthrough for Mega Man Legends that mainly covered the main story stuff and only a handful of the side content so I used that to help me finish the game, but I didn't get to play the original PS1 release until about late 2019 when I bought it on PS3 and after I played through that, I realized how bad the N64 port was so I'm glad I was able to actually play the original even it was was 18 years later, better late than never.
One thing I do have fond memories of regarding the N64 release was I got to use GameShark with it and had a blast just messing around with different codes and seeing what all I could do.
I grew up with the original PS1 version and it's still my favorite Mega Man sub series. Even if they cancelled the third Legends game, I still wanna see them revive the project and I have been a part of many efforts to try and twist their arm and make them revive the project some years ago lol hell I'm still a Get Me Off The Moon member
Keep em coming
Yes sir!
Welcome back!
Thanks 5 vids in the past 5 weeks makes me think I’m on a bit of a roll again
Oh boy, I do LOVE Mega Man Legends! It's really a shame the Mega Man fandom at the time absolutely hated it...
"While some Mega Man purists and loyalties would've hated the more anime style of the blue bomber"
Do we, though? Even the NES games were very much anime. Maybe not in the american box art, but certainly in the Weapon Get screens, Stage Select and the Japanese artwork shown in some magazines did look very anime. I'm genuinely asking, back then I don't remember anyone complaining about the art direction, a lot of people instead were complaining it wasn't the usual formula of 8 bosses + get their weapons + Fortress stages. It was a big sticking point, essentially calling it poor man's Zelda.
Anyhow, Legends was a fun game even on N64 IMO. I got it around the year 2000 and I had fun with it, the fun was super full of charm and character. I feel that, maybe, had the translation not removed the ties to Mega Man X they would've made the fans of the time less aggresive torwards the sudden genre shift, instead would've focused on the narrative aspect of where this games place, what happened to the world, and how come the Maverick Hunters (while Legends' english translation calls them Purifier Units) would go as far as to "reinitialize" entire populations regardless of the Island population being artificial life forms or not, since that goes against all X fought for. You know, it would've at least had fans' sales and Legends wouldn't be super dead as a subseries.
Kinda similar to how after the release of Mega Man X4, the Zero's animated intro cutscene spawned threads upon threads upon threads of discussion surrounding the lore and what happened between Classic and X as the main discussion in those old forum days.
I miss those days.
I think it’s one of those games that felt like a bastard of the franchise on its release but now it has a following and is more accepted along with the sequel
@@n64glennplant It definitely was, but it also had so many interesting ideas and concepts, both in-universe and in general. I know it's been more time since Legends 3's cancellation and now than the timegap between Legends 2's release and Legends 3's announcement, but I still hold hope Capcom will revisit the series some day.
