An Unhinged Review of the Mega Man Legends Series

  • ah yes, goopless at last
    Today we're looking at Mega Man Legends, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, and Legends 2 - talking design, 'avin a giggle, not dredging up the third game, keeping it real. I've been dealing with too many heavy projects and I needed something lighter for the warmer days, connect with the roots, you know?
    I'm gonna pre-empt any "will you cover the other mega man subseries" with yeah, I would, but I don't know how much interest there is and video views are my best indicator, so feel free to curse your groupchat with my shrieking.
    Idk I think too many people complain about controls in games in general. Thing feels fine - like there's an adjustment period, but it works. And for putting up with it, you get this positive, dramatic PS1 classic that really bleeds personality. A lot of games struggle with this - not Capcom's stuff, mind, but in general Legends does a great job of roping players and fans in with raw charm. I'm not about to join the legends discord, but I recommend trying out the first at least.

      @elenavaleria9943 Před 2 lety +2

      But the interconected dungeons wouldn't work in Legends 2 since we explore diferent islands. Having one big interconected undeground structure on the psone would have several limitations because of the hardware, and it would make the world feel small because of it. So it made sense of each island to have their own ruin structure (the sub gates are more neutral in design compared to the main ones and resemble the ones in 1 more) and since we needed specific ones for finding the keys, having them more varied in theme was a nice touch. I personaly like what they tried to do in 2, but they played their cards with the story to early. 2 should have just set up the mistery so 3 could deliver the answers. The way they did the story made it very hard for making a sequel like Kbash said. There's still things unresolved, but since they spilled the main lore details in the end I don't know how to top that lol

    Mega Man Legends (I had the '64' version specifically) is such a nostalgic title for me. When I was a kid, the only console I had access to for a long time was the N64. I was, perhaps, vaguely aware that Mega Man existed as a franchise outside of this one title, but to me as a kid Mega Man Legends was *the* Mega Man game. It was what Mega Man was all about. I loved playing it, but I never beat it. Exploring the old robot ruins underground was very scary for me as a kid, so instead I liked to hang out in the city and market area. I remember being endlessly amused by kicking the can up and down the hall, and watching the dog run around. That one little area is probably one of the coziest places in gaming to me. It seems silly looking back on all that as an adult, but perhaps I have something to learn from my childhood self about how the small things in life are often the most beautiful.

    Megaman Legends is so charming. Love the art style. And in the age where being able to just freely explore a 3D space was so much fun and made your childhood imagination soar, Legends' richly populated city (especially for the time) was leaps and bounds over any other game. The controls were stiff, but most 3D games were. Tomb Raider was far more stiff, but just exploring Lara's mansion was the most fun thing in every installment. Legends had that same spirit throughout most of the game with tons of charming characters to interact with. Games like Mario 64 controllee better, sure, but back then that didn't matter. The freedom and world detail for the time alone made Legends stand out above the others. The fun story and neat gameplay loop was a bonus to a little kid like me. I had the N64 version as a kid and it was really good! I remember I was actually afraid of the reaver bots and ended up just wondering around the cities. Also if you didn’t know, at the part where you stop the pirates from stealing a bunch of money, you can actually steal the money yourself and mega man will get a ton of negative karma and his suit will turn black. I did this always as a kid cause I just thought the black color was cooler without actually realizing the implications. Btw the music has the most pleasant bops around, with the dungeon themes being straight up bangers sometimes!

    Not to be That Guy 0:21 seconds in, but the fact that MML ISN’T an alternate universe (nor any of the other games besides Battle Network and Starforce) but a continuation of the same timeline is a big part of the appeal of these games to me, and I wouldn’t have put off playing them for as long if I wasn’t under the misconception that they were in self-contained universes. The dark lore of the series is so much more significant when you realize this is the future Mega Man Classic was leading up to.

    I 100%ed all three of those games back in the day. I was in my teens so I grew up with mad crushes on both Tron and Roll. When MML3 was canceled I wrote letters asking them to publish it. I bought a 3DS just for that game. Thankfully I ended up with the Ambassador games, which was a cool consolation prize.
    One more thing. These games DESERVE PROPER REMASTERS AND RERELEASES!!! All you need to do is update the textures and add the ability to move while locked on to MML and TMOTB. A multi-player mode could even be sick. Anyway, good video. Thanks for sharing.

    Man, I'm really glad you enjoyed the Legends series. It's an imperative part of not just my sensibilities as a gamer, but me as a person as well. Megaman Legends (very unimaginatively renamed Megaman 64 on the N64 which was the rendition I played growing up until I purchased the PS1 original in my early adulthood) was the very first Megaman game I ever played and needless to say, I was hooked on the franchise from then onward. I remember how excited I got when I checked your Twitter feed and saw you were working on covering these games. They catch so much flack and are so often chastised for their clunky controls and are subsequently written off as bad for that alone, it's fuckin criminal. These games are special for many reasons to the fanbase and for GOOD reason. I admittedly thought 2 was a bit of a letdown given the impact that Legends 1 had on me, but still definitely worth the romp, if only once. Great video man, love your content so much. By the way, happy belated birthday dude. I hope you had an awesome day and I can't wait for your next upload. Cheers, bro.

    Megaman legends is not an alternate universe like battle network or starforce
    The timeline goes from
    Main universe:

    (An alt timeline after mmx7 that leads to Command mission)

    Battle Network - Star force

    Ive generally never really liked cute things. It's weird but it's true. One of the only cute characters I have ever liked are the Servbots. They are idiots and they won me over. For anyone who hasn't played these, KBash barley talked about the interesting things you can do in these games. It's a perfect blend of Non/Linear with really good side content if you are enjoying the vibe of the in game world. These games are simple-ish but so refreshing if you need a break from modern gaming. Truly a PS1 classic that has stood the test of time. Play them anyway you can because they ARE great. You don't have to listen to me, though. I'm an old, puckered asshole. Listen to KBash. He only played these games THIS YEAR and had a good experience. You would too.
