  • John sheds light on an issue that only skilled marketers are aware of and then provides a clear solution. This is the offline importation of the conversion actions that happen post-lead generation and when you want to upload them back into Google Ads.
    Apple is pushing heavily on WBRAID and GBRAID parameters. But those are not being imported with the standard GCLID parameter.
    That's why advertisers need to learn this method to upload those leads back into Google Ads. This method will also help you push against the spam leads that Performance Max is generating because of heavy click farms and junk traffic. Watch this video now!

    This is more of a workaround then sustainable solution. You don't have to rely on enhanced conversions. You can use API to upload conversion with gbraid or wbraid parameters. ;)

    Hi John, this was really helpful thanks!
    One question though, when I use enhanced conversions Auto, it only picks up the email. Do we have to also pick up the phone number or is email fine?

    Is it normal to see "Inactive" and "Set Import" for a conversion action. I did the setup following all the needed steps, hashing, allowing access to the Google ID and all. I still see "Inactive" in front of the conversion in Google Ads UI in Goal Summary.

    So if we use this method, we don't need Gclid for Andriod? We can just capture the leads and import the Mail and phone in hashed form. Right?

    Thanks for this John! Does this mean that we would have to set up 2 separate conversion imports? One for g/wbraid, and another for gclid? As the two are using different templates

    Thanks for the info - can this get conversions for gbraid and wbraid without api access? does it must have phone and email? can i put dummy phone and email and right value to get conversions into google ads without api?

    So this only applies to app conversions?
    …and not to leads generated because of people coming to our landing pages through search-ads, & filling up contact-info forms ??

    Thanks John, have you also tried the "Upload Clicks" option in the Google Ads API? The API Docs say it should be able to accept WBRAID or GBRAID in the absence of GCLID.

    Amazing info! For an ecommerce business, if a user clicks on say a shopping ad, and lands on the product webpage with GCLID generated and nothing else happens other than the "view item" event from landing there, and calls in to place the order and converts over the phone, how does the business associate the click (GCLID) to the first party data captured offline via call to upload back to Google Ads as a purchase conversion to also optimize towards?

    Hi John,
    I'm a follower of your content on CZcams, and I find your insights on Google Ads very valuable. I have a question regarding optimizing our university's Google Ads campaign for lead generation.
    In our campaign, we're generating inquiries, and some of these turn out to be qualified leads. I'm exploring ways to better target these qualified leads within Google Ads. Our down-funnel process involves the following stages: Inquiry, Call from Our Enrollment Team, Student Completes Application, Admit, and Enroll.
    I'm considering the use of Enhanced Conversions and whether it's feasible to layer our campaigns similar to a sales funnel. Although we don't have a direct monetary value for each conversion, I'm thinking of assigning values based on the significance of each step in our process.
    Do you have any recommendations on how we can effectively use Enhanced Conversions and optimize our campaign for qualified leads in our unique context?

    Thank you for the awesome findings! It's really strange that sometimes when I click on ads, it triggers either GBRAID or GCLID (I am the latest iOS user with a signed-up Google profile). I am from Europe where I mostly see GCLID. Does the ad location really affect this?

    I have created three conversion actions: first is inbound calls, second is signups, and third is chats that I upload offline. My question is, I have created offline conversions for qualified leads and offline conversions for converted leads as well, will this result in double counts in my ad account?

    SOO… "Enhanced conversion tracking" code is like META's "conversion-api", but for Google…
    This begs the question - which one is better at tracking ?

      There is no perfect tracking solution. Due to privacy (especially with IOS crackdowns). Plus, due to multiple devices, cross channel attribution issues (google, to facebook, to snapchat to tiktok to twitter etc) tracking is dropping off way more than usual. But, due to Google haveing the largest footprint on the internet with their products, Google's enhanced conversions is really good at tracking in their properties. So long story short, make sure you have enhanced conversions setup correctly to make sure you are feeding as much of the data to Google as possible.

    If you're not capturing Enhanced conversion data at the time of the conversion for whatever reason, then I'd assume this wouldn't work as Google has no data to match it against?

    I clicked on 10 different google ads (sorry to the business I wasted clicks on) and only 1/10 had a gbraid parameter. The rest were GCLID.

      90% will always have a gclid. Google determines whether to pass through the wbraid or gbraid parameter. Wbraid is for Web to app measurement (search/shopping). Gbraid is used for app to app measurement (CZcams/Display/Discovery). Wbraid and Gbraid parameters are generally passed through on IOS surfaces, due to Apple's privacy updates since IOS 14. Google will automatically assign whether it passes through a gclid, wbraid or gbraid, depending on the platform you are using.

    I just got into digital marketing. I have only just setup all the conversion tracking for gclid with forms and ctm and now I see this???? Why is apple doing this.

    For privacy reasons this is not a great work around as you share Personally Identifiable Information (PII) with the platform..
    So IOS kicks the click ID'S (also from other networks btw) for user protection reasons - and then the result is marketers go back to sending personal info to Google..
