  • In this video I'll show how to replace the blower motor and blower resistor on an 04 Ford Ranger 3.0L. The process is rather simple and getting the motor and resistor replaced is very easy once room is made to replace them. By simply removing the air filter housing, positioning the cruise control unit out of the way, and moving the coolant reservoir and washer reservoir forward a bit the room needed to replace the blower and resistor is easily created. Once room is made simply disconnect said parts, unbolt them and replace them. The processes involve in replacing said parts is similar to other model year Ford Rangers. (Similar not the same and care should be taken to recognize the differences. This is where a manual will help.)
Note: It is suggested to perform this repair with the engine off and completely cooled.

This is one of the nicest videos I have ever seen pictures were excellent description was excellent I was having trouble getting my airbox out was stuck in the bottom grommets so hard I thought it was bolted I was able to work at Lulu's with a screwdriver through the bottom of the air box a little bit of silicone spray lube down into the grommets made it slide out nicely it was really stuck in those grommets on the bottom thought I was going to break the air box in half so thank you for your description of the whole project and not just putting it back in you sure have a definite talent for teaching thank you very much

great video. Too many videos skip steps. I only needed the info on the airbox, but it saved me some frustration since I couldn't see what held it in place. I was afraid to horse on it till I saw this video. I am jealous though, yours came off way easier than mine. lol Thanks.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!
I bought a new motor for my 05 ranger at auto zone ($45) and decided to get the resistor too ($20). The one thing your video did not show, as you said you got yours at a junk yard, was swapping the fan out.... Pry the retaining clip off and save it if new motor did not come with one. A little bit of lubricant on the shaft, hold the fan (helper may be needed) & tap on the end of the shaft with a hammer. Carefully remove foam gasket and place on new motor (i had to glue mine in place) & make sure holes line up. Install fan on motor and secure in place with the retaining clip.
I hope that helps anyone that got confused at this point as I had to call up parts store to find that part out.
Great video and you helped me out immensely with it!

There is a screen back in the blower housing you can get to while the blower is out. They are bad about getting clogged up and restricting air flow out of the vents. I duct taped a piece of 1/2" cpvc pipe about 16 inches long into the end of a 1 gallon shop vac. Spray the screen liberally with a soap/water solution from a jet spray bottle. It will clean much better being wet. And vacuum it out. Shine a good light in to inspect it. This screen can also be vacuumed from the inside if you open the glove box and release the latches on the side and let it hang straight down. Put the air conditioner on Max Air and the door will open where you can see the screen. Kill the engine and clean the screen. I do this about once a year. That screen will get very clogged sometimes. I have an 07 and an 09 model and they both have the screen.

Awesome video. I retired my 04 manual as my daily driver in 2017. It has 330k miles on it and still starts right up and sounds great, minus the lack of exhaust since it was so rotted for 4 years. Since I just replaced the exhaust and completely redid the front brakes...brake lines suck...It's time to tackle the rattling noise and lack of different speeds in the blower. It functions but its annoying and if i can get it done cheaply I'll do it.

Great video, however there is NO need to remove such a large "billable" amount of hours and equipment from the fender. The squirrel cage blower wheel will distort enough to fit into the housing. Simply align the clock rotation (as if the thing would fit in the first place) and at the top position (12 O'clock), with the bottom facing to the rear as much as possible, tip the wheel forward and exactly at the top notice that the wheel is only a quarter inch away from slipping home. Take your time. Then when the closest point, just compress the top of the wheel down, and the old unit slips right out, and the new one slips right in. Even the original unit had NO damage after removal. I had to work harder removing the electrical connectors. 4x8mm & 1x 10mm. Use a 1/4" drive for the 8mm fasteners.

Just got around to replacing the motor on my 02 ranger. I had to really manhandle that airbox to get it off AND on. and yes I did lose one of the motor screws as it fell into nether region under the motor.. My replacement fan did not come with a gasket so I gingerly took the old gasket off without tearing and used 4 small dabs of super glue to hold it on the new motor frame at the screw holes. Thanks for your help.
