  • Getting started with a family milk cow is an exciting step in your homesteading journey! Today we go over the basics of getting your first milk cow. Bossy, our cow is Speckle Park mixed with Holstein. She is pregnant so soon we will have milk and a calf to raise for beef! There are a lot of things to consider before bringing home a family milk cow. The breed, space and shelter, hay and grain, and how to breed them are some we cover today. I hope this video helps you on your way to having a beef or dairy cow for your homestead!
If you are not ready for a family milk cow, pigs or chickens are a great place to start!

We love our soon to be milk cow! If you are interested in getting a homestead cow what breed do you like or are thinking of getting?

Cool. Yes, cows are definitely a lot of work and can be quite costly but it can pay off in the end. The homestead is coming along nicely for you guys.

I appreciate your video very much. It was very informative, and covered all the questions I have wondered about. You both are very real and engaging, and I enjoyed it all. Hoping all goes well with Bossy! I really appreciated the estimated costs for all the different aspects of having a cow, from feed to AI. Thanks so much!

I'm thinking about getting a chocolate milk cow... a little more expensive but worth it in the long run

Maybe don't start a homestead if you plan to spend as much as it will take to get the good chocolate, or if you trust the person selling you the required breed:)

It’s a little mean to call someone bossy as of they were telling you what to do and ordering them about so why would the cow be named Bossy?

Good question, one I get ask a lot. Often cows are called "bossy" because cattle are in the genus (scientific grouping) "Bos". Traditionally farmers use the call "come boss" as a way to herd in cattle. Eric and I used this call daily when working on a dairy farm. So naming a cow Bossy is kind of like naming a cat feline (genus Felis).
