Can't wait to start making cheese once we get a good dairy source
It’s so fun!
Nothing better than a homemade mac and cheese! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely agree! Thanks for watching!
I have always heard this method to control heavy fly problems: cut up 2 hot dogs put into a jar add syrup "I think corn syrup" to cover the dogs really well then poke wholes into the lid of the jar and sit in or hang it in your problem area and watch it fill up. The flies go in but can't get out. If you try it I hope it works for your sweet girl. Your mac n cheese looks really yummy. Thanks for sharing your recipe and letting us into a bit of your life. Blessings
Thanks for sharing! Could totally see how that will work and will need to give it a shot. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for the ebook! 2 gallons sounds a little overwhelming, but at the same time... not. Ha! Once daily is generally what we do here, too.

I really enjoyed this video - thank you for showing your day with a milk cow and everything you do throughout the day with the milk. I think its outstanding that you keep it simple and only make a few cheeses and stay with the ones you know your family will eat. That mac and cheese looks wonderful. As an adult I enjoy the baked mac and cheese as well. Thanks again for showing this wonderful video.
Appreciate the comment 😊 Thanks for watching!
No Thank you for the fantastisc content love it God Bless you and your family . I want to get a cow and some chicken .So you are helping me to see whats envolved with it and I grew up helping my Grandpa milk and bail hey. But the bigest thang driveing me to do it is purity of the food. So again Ty

Great video with so much useful information. I am about to start "family" dairy and learning more about your experiences is so helpful!!
So glad it was helpful! You totally got this! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the fun reciped ideas. Good job!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
thanks for all the info...aawwww, puppy gets yummy treat :)
Ha! Every morning! Thanks for watching! :)
I really like those vintage looking milk jars you have. Do you mind sharing where you got them? Thanks!
When we purchased our cow, the previous owners gave them to us! I'm not sure where they came from unfortunately. The narrow tops of them can make them more challenging to clean and harder to skim the cream from the top but they are easier to pour than 1/2 gallon mason jars. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great and useful video ❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I'm so excited for the ebook!! Just got our family milk cow (who is also a lower producer) and I'm so ready to make our own dairy products! Do you make ricotta or cottage cheese?
Awesome - hope you love it! We’ve made ricotta in the past out of milk or whey but we don’t make it regularly. We haven’t done cottage cheese yet (it’s never been our favorite) but we should try the homemade version!
Use rosemary and mint to make a fly spray.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video!! We've been enjoying making ice cream using your recipes which are much creamier than those from the book that came with the ice cream maker. Maybe we will have to try mac and cheese. ps. joelle - milking gives your toned upper arms!
Yay!! Glad you’ve been making ice cream! I can guarantee you that your grandkids would be big fans of the Mac and cheese :)
Great video thanks for sharing with us
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your video & information. We’re considering milk goats. 😊❤
You’re welcome!! That’s exciting!!
Thank you for the e-book! I just made some mozzarella for the first time last weekend. I did not salt it so it was bland but I liked the texture. I am going to try again following your method.
Nice!! Yes, we salt it pretty liberally! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome lifestyle
Wouldn’t trade it!
I had always wondered what a person would do with that much milk everyday. My family has never been big milk drinkers but that’s probably because they never had fresh from the cow milk.
Yeah, its kind of crazy how many things can be made with milk, isn't it?! Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I’m picking up my cow and calf tomorrow! I’ve researched for about 10 years but I’m still so nervous!
You totally got this! Our milk cow routines feel like second nature now but they didn't necessarily always feel that way. There's a learning curve for sure. Stay calm and patient. Treat your gal with respect. There may be a period where she's breaking you in as much as you think you're breaking her in 🤣 All part of their personally and the starting point of any good longterm relationship! Stick with it and you'll do great! Thanks for watching!
How long will the drinking milk last in the refrigerator? I’m about to get a cow for my homestead.
Getting it cold as quickly as possible will make it last longer. I've heard of others saying that their milk will last up to 2 weeks. I always try to make sure ours is used up within the week though, otherwise it piles up. It can be helpful to put the date on it of what day it's from so you can use the oldest up first. Good luck in your new adventure!! Very exciting!
@@FromScratchFarmstead Thank you for letting me know. We don’t plan on keeping it around that long. We’re trying to make some of our milk into feed for the rest of our animals. But it good to know for our drinking milk. Much appreciated
Oh the AGA! I am purchasing one for our up-and-coming house! What state do you live in with all the flies that you have? I think this is probably a really bad problem for every state? But I was just curious.
AGA’s are the BEST!! We are in Illinois and Wisconsin previously - we had fly issues in both! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this information about having a family milk cow. In your opinion/experience what is the max age of a jersey milk cow you would want to buy for your family?...at what age are they considered "old"?
Good question! We got ours when she was 3 and she had already had one calf. This was great! I think the best answer is “it depends”. Our cow is now 7 and healthy and we anticipate she will still be able to calve a few more times. I think the most important thing is how is she as a cow - genetics, temperament. If all those things are right and you can get her at the right price, even if she only can have 1 or 2 calves, you could raise up one of her calfs as a dairy cow in the future. I hope this helps!
@@FromScratchFarmstead thank you! This does help!
@@FromScratchFarmstead have another question about once a day milking...yall mentioned you milk once a day right now, is the calf still with momma cow part of the day ans then yall separate? Or is the calf not nursing at all and yall only milk once a day?
Thanks, Amanda
@@amandayeates185 our calf is over a year old now and still nursing! So we do have her together with mama during the day and then we separate them at night so we can milk in the morning. Even when she stops nursing we'll still stick to once a day milking. Her supply will usually be pretty high for a while once the calf weans but it usually just regulates on its own. We also look forward to a much higher cream content once that happens because she reserves most of the cream for the calf 😋
Do yall feed your cow a grain ration while milking her? If so what do yall feed?
Thanks
I appreciate what you do but with a dairy sensitivity I would never be able to use all that milk.
That would definitely change things. Thanks for watching!
I love the smell of milking, the cow, the milk, the calmness of the routine, thank you for the video, you did not list cottage cheese.
It’s the best!!! We’ll have to give cottage cheese a go - we haven’t made it yet!
this video was great! I love watching your channel especially with your milk cow. We're hoping to get a milk cow of our own within the years, so every bit of info helps our decision. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback!! Very exciting! Hope you find the right thing at just the right time!
