    I have always heard this method to control heavy fly problems: cut up 2 hot dogs put into a jar add syrup "I think corn syrup" to cover the dogs really well then poke wholes into the lid of the jar and sit in or hang it in your problem area and watch it fill up. The flies go in but can't get out. If you try it I hope it works for your sweet girl. Your mac n cheese looks really yummy. Thanks for sharing your recipe and letting us into a bit of your life. Blessings

      When we purchased our cow, the previous owners gave them to us! I'm not sure where they came from unfortunately. The narrow tops of them can make them more challenging to clean and harder to skim the cream from the top but they are easier to pour than 1/2 gallon mason jars. Thanks for watching!

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Getting it cold as quickly as possible will make it last longer. I've heard of others saying that their milk will last up to 2 weeks. I always try to make sure ours is used up within the week though, otherwise it piles up. It can be helpful to put the date on it of what day it's from so you can use the oldest up first. Good luck in your new adventure!! Very exciting!

    Thanks for sharing this information about having a family milk cow. In your opinion/experience what is the max age of a jersey milk cow you would want to buy for your family?...at what age are they considered "old"?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Před rokem +1

      Good question! We got ours when she was 3 and she had already had one calf. This was great! I think the best answer is “it depends”. Our cow is now 7 and healthy and we anticipate she will still be able to calve a few more times. I think the most important thing is how is she as a cow - genetics, temperament. If all those things are right and you can get her at the right price, even if she only can have 1 or 2 calves, you could raise up one of her calfs as a dairy cow in the future. I hope this helps!

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Před rokem +1

      @@amandayeates185 our calf is over a year old now and still nursing! So we do have her together with mama during the day and then we separate them at night so we can milk in the morning. Even when she stops nursing we'll still stick to once a day milking. Her supply will usually be pretty high for a while once the calf weans but it usually just regulates on its own. We also look forward to a much higher cream content once that happens because she reserves most of the cream for the calf 😋
