      A funny one is Brodeur's playing of the puck throughout his defensive zone....he was so good at it that the league had to purposefully create a rule restricting him to around the net (which was when the trap was created, I think) so that the opposing team at least had a chance to get the puck on net! 😅😆

    As an EMT and a player, keeping your head up is a sure fire way to minimize the chances of taking a concussion inducing hit, we definitely needed the rule changes as another layer of protection, but your gonna get drilled if your head is down

    • @michaeljones436
      @michaeljones436 Před 2 lety

      Like you said, "Keeping your head up will help with getting out of the way of concussion inducing hits!" However, the NHL has always had dirty/head hunting players. Since the early 80's up to todays players, their training, their strength, their size has increased so much that there's no wondering injuries have become more severe! Especially the Concussions. This rule has benefited the NHL players immensely. According to recent studies, NHL hits are 25% to 30% harder and more severe than NFL hits. The average NHL hockey player is is around the 195lb range, whilst the average NFL player is 210lbs and up. Yet the the speed and momentum of a cross check or shoulder check in the NHL is so much harder a hit than any other sport. This rule is definitely saving the careers and lives of hockey players world wide.

    • @deathsicon
      @deathsicon Před 2 lety +1

      I didn't disagree with the rule changes for head shots, I am slightly concerned that one day they might take the protection a little too far as society softens, but as it sits now I fully agree with it all

    I am not sure I would count 2011 as early to the concussion game for a sports league. I remember playing Rugby in 2001 and there being concussion tests implemented at that time. Sure the NFL knew about and essentially downplayed concussion since about 1994 but other sports were taking it a little more seriously early on. Absolutely good on Hockey for making the change though.

    Another great vid, Rob! Gary "Suitcase" Smith was a goalie who always wanted to score a goal, so he had a tendency to skate out of his net, and past his own blueline. One time he even skated past center and up to the Canadiens' blueline to take a shot, but Smith got injured on the play when JC Tremblay nailed him, so the NHL changed the rule so goalies can no longer skate past center ice.

    So on the topic of concussions. I played hockey from the time I was 3 until I graduated high school playing for my varsity team. I’ve had only 1 confirmed concussion, the only time I was ever actually tested, but I suspect that I actually had many many more. Currently at 27 I still get splitting headaches if I spend too much screen time or if the screen is too bright for too long. I have hypersensitivity to light, I’ve got black out curtains in my bedroom bc the sun hurts my head. My attention span has shrunk, and I’ve gone from 20/40 vision (literally better than perfect, I saw things @40 ft as if they were at 20 feet) to now needing reading glasses. I’m really glad this is getting the attention it deserves bc I’m a prime example of how detrimental head injuries, even undiagnosed, can be to day to day life.

Basketball and soccer are already unwatchable because so many players spend all their free time diving and trying to draw a penalty. Now it is becoming more of an issue in hockey and football, which are still my favorite sports, but it gets harder to watch the more players trying to draw chicken shit penalties instead of just playing the game.

    Pk subban is definitely the diving king! He's also the king of illegal slew footing!!....another thing the refs seldom seem to catch him doing yet he does it in every game he plays! He's not always successful but he attempts it in just about every game he plays! Anytime there's a scrum along the boards and puck is pinned for a bit just watch and you'll see Subban usually slowly move in behind a player from opposing team who's try to dig for the puck and you'll see Subban position himself with one of his legs behind other guys and then he'll shove em or grab em and pull back on em a Lil to try to get them to trip over his leg...often times he'll stick his arm around in front of players chest while having his leg extended behind other guys legs and he'll swing his arm backwards to force guy backwards over his leg!

    Since the league likes to call both the offending player and diving player to the box. Maybe the league needs to make driving a double minor (4 mins) and the offending player gets 2 mins. When the players realize that diving gives the other team a power play and they get scored on it, they may stop diving.

    • @RoyalMela
      @RoyalMela Před 2 lety

      By diving you already penalize your team as you lose a powerplay. In case both players get a penalty.

    • @sksaddrakk5183
      @sksaddrakk5183 Před 2 lety

      Could you explain please? As far as I know you are only allowed to play if you do indeed wear a helmet. What kind of helmet you wear is up to you as a player. Most players prefer a visor only , as it does not 'fog' and offers therefore the best sight compared to the 'grille' ones which lots of players claim has an inferior field of vision due to the 'bars' criss-crossing same. However, here in Europe all the youth teams have to wear helmets with 'grilles' to protect their teeth/faces/eyes... even if they happen to play in the professional league, they still have to wear the 'junior helmet' if they are under a certain age (I believe the threshold is 18 but do not quote me on that). EDIT: In fact the IIHF rules state QUOTE: 9.7. FACIAL PROTECTION
      There are three (3) permissible types of facial protection which can be attached to the front of a Players’ helmet: a visor protection,
      a cage protection, or a full-face protection visor.
      All Players born after December 31, 1974, must wear, as a minimum a visor as a facial protection. The visor face protection must
      be properly affixed to their helmet, and must extend down in such a fashion as to ensure adequate eye protection, to cover the eyes
      and nose in its entirety. It must be fixed to the helmet along the sides so that it cannot be flipped up. A Player whose visor face
      protection becomes cracked or broken during game action must leave the ice immediately.
      Players are not allowed to wear a colored or tinted visor.
      Participating Teams in an IIHF Competition must ensure that their Players are equipped with a helmet manufactured and approved
      specifically for ice hockey and that, as applicable, a visor or a full-face protection is properly attached to it.
      Specific rules and guidelines for appropriate head / face / neck / throat / mouth protection for Women's Hockey and Men's Junior
      “Under 20” and “Under 18” categories.
      UNQUOTE:
      I hope the NHL has similar rules in place...

      @@sksaddrakk5183 IDK about Europe, in russia you must wear full face protection if you're either under 18, a woman, or you've recently had a face trauma. In other cases it's visor only. It's VHL (local professional league) and junior league I'm talking about.
      If you're just a hobby player, sure, wear whatever you want, we have like 50/50 grilles and visors
